Our writing team of 12 local moms has put together this resource to help you find all the comforts of community that make parenting in a new community a little easier
Desa Rae currently resides in Gilbert with her college sweetheart, three kids (ages 4 and under).
During the week, she is most likely at a park, attending a free event in town, baking anything with sourdough, or curled up in bed reading a good book.
Originally from Ohio, she and her family are happy to call sunny Arizona home since 2017.
Megan is originally from North Florida, but has called the East Valley her home since 2009.
This year Megan left her job as an accountant to stay home with her boys. She serves on the Steering Committee for a local MomCo (formally known as MOPS) group and leads a small group Bible study at her house.
Ameema is a first-time mom to her daughter Aria. She’s usually busy balancing her career as a writer and videographer while chasing her toddler and keeping her engaged with activities.
East Valley Moms is a hyperlocal, digital media platform to connect local parents with local resources and storytelling to inspire a more connected, joyful parenting journey across Mesa, Gilbert, Tempe, Chandler, Apache Junction and Queen Creek.
I feel incredibly lucky to have a sister who is also a certified nurse-midwife
Brynea Daman has been supporting East Valley families through pregnancy and birth for over 11 years and she’s been my go-to resource through every stage of motherhood
I sat down with her to ask one big question: What do you wish every first-time mom knew about birth? Here’s what she had to say
Every labor is different regardless of how much you prepare Whether you deliver with an epidural, unmedicated, in a tub, or via cesarean, the most important thing is that you feel supported and empowered through the process Choose a provider (or group) who aligns with your goals but will also guide you gently if those plans shift
Trying to “bounce back” can delay healing and worsen postpartum bleeding The laundry and dishes can wait The most important things in those early weeks? Eat, sleep, and snuggle that baby Give yourself permission to rest and recover
We Don’t Notice (or Care) About Your Body Hair
Truly You don’t need to apologize for not shaving We’re focused on you, your baby, and your health never your grooming routine.
Your provider only has so much time with you during prenatal visits If you’re hoping for an unmedicated birth, you’ll need to do some training on your own That means childbirth education classes, learning what early labor looks like, and understanding that much of labor especially for first-time moms happens at home
Start with classes offered by your birth hospital or look into community-based or virtual options A bonus tip? Hire a doula who aligns with your personality and goals they’re a game-changer for birth support.

It took me three babies to finally feel brave enough to plan a home birth and it ended up being the most beautiful, empowering experience I’ve ever had.
If you’ve been curious about home birth but feel held back by common fears, let’s bust a few myths together (Note: I’m referring specifically to midwife-assisted home births )
While it’s true that home births are often not covered by insurance, they aren’t always more expensive. Many midwives offer all-inclusive packages (prenatal care, birth, and postpartum support) starting around $6,000 and HSA funds can often be used Hospital birth costs depend heavily on your deductible, and surprise bills happen The one real cost risk? If you need to transfer care late in pregnancy, you may end up paying for both
Myth
Licensed midwives are highly trained professionals. They monitor for “yellow flags” (watch-andwait issues) and “red flags” (urgent signs requiring transfer) They’ll help you prepare for possible hospital transfer and choose a nearby facility that’s home-birth-friendly In Chandler, Banner Ocotillo is known for handling transfers with care
Myth
There may not be an epidural, but that doesn’t mean no relief. Midwives bring natural options, and water births are popular because warm water promotes relaxation and boosts natural endorphins Your team may also include doulas, massage therapists, and chiropractors to support comfort and optimal baby positioning
No one plans to receive a medical diagnosis for their unborn child. Hearing the news can be shocking But you are not alone When everything feels uncertain, you can be sure that we will do everything possible to give your baby the best possible start.
At Phoenix Children’s Center for Fetal and Neonatal Care, our expert Neonatology team partners with several hospitals throughout the Valley so that they
can care for your newborn closer to where you live, providing care from pregnancy to after delivery. Our team will also work with your OB and maternal fetal medicine (MFM) specialist to plan your baby’s care before and after they’re born, customizing our team to you and your baby’s needs.
This journey is likely not what you expected We are here to comfort and guide you through your baby’s medical journey for as long as you need us
Welcoming a new baby is one of life’s most beautiful milestones—but it also brings big changes, sleepless nights, and more questions than answers. That’s why having the right support in those early days isn’t just helpful—it’s transformative.
At The Newborn Care Solutions Agency, we believe that parents deserve to feel confident, cared for, and truly supported. Our professional Newborn Care Specialists offer so much more than help—they bring calm, clarity, and reassurance to your home during one of the most important seasons of your life.
What sets us apart? We’re not just an agency – we’re the founders of the only internationally accredited training program in the world for this industry. That means every provider we recommend has access to the highest standard of newborn care education available.
And with thousands of graduates in our network, we have unmatched access to toptier providers who are passionate, prepared, and committed to giving your family the best start possible.
Whether you’re bringing home your first baby or your fourth, we’ll walk alongside you every step of the way—from the initial consultation to the moment you feel confident on your own. Because when families feel supported, they don’t just get through the newborn stage —they enjoy it.
Let us match you with the expert care you deserve. You’ve got this and we’ve got you.
MOM
I started offering this class because I’ve been in your shoes.
Postpartum rocked me. The shift into motherhood was beautiful—but also isolating, disorienting, and heavy in ways I didn’t expect. I remember feeling like I just needed something to break the cycle. Something to get me out of the house. Something to do with my daughter that wasn’t just about surviving the next nap or feeding.
Water became that something. Being in the pool with her—skin to skin, hearts close, nothing else demanding my attention reminded me of who I was before the fog. And being around other moms, even if we didn’t say much at first, reminded me I wasn’t alone.
Permission to reconnect. Community without pressure.
Our classes are gentle, welcoming, and calm. You don’t need to know what you’re doing. You don’t need to be “bouncing back.” You just need to show up and we’ll meet you where you are.
This isn’t just swim. It’s connection. Confidence.
That’s why we offer free classes for babies 3–6 months old at Swimhaus. Yes, the developmental perks for your baby are real (better sleep, stronger coordination, early sensory integration) but what matters just as much is what it gives you. Space to breathe.
And a small way for us to give back to the moms doing the quiet, courageous work of showing up every day.
We see you. And we’re here for you when you’re ready to float into the Swimhaus Fam.

If you’re expecting and not already seeing a chiropractor, consider this your sign. Chiropractic care is one of the most powerful ways to support your body during pregnancy—and yes, your baby benefits too.
Chiropractors use gentle, targeted adjustments to help the body function at its best by improving spinal alignment and nervous system communication. This can lead to better sleep, fewer aches and pains, and even a shorter labor.
Still on the fence? Here are three big reasons to book that prenatal adjustment.
When your spine is in alignment, your body simply works better. Expect improved sleep, a more regulated immune system, better digestion, and fewer hormonal rollercoasters. Chiropractic care supports the nervous system your body's main communication highway which plays a vital role in pregnancy wellness
Regular visits during pregnancy are proactive, not reactive. Start early to avoid the physical toll of growing a tiny human.
Back pain, sciatica, hip discomfort, pelvic pressure chiropractors can help ease many pregnancy-related aches. They can also address the weird, bodycramping symptoms that show up as baby grows and shifts
Studies suggest chiropractic care throughout pregnancy can reduce labor time by 25–30% By creating more space for baby and supporting optimal fetal positioning, your body is better prepared for birth
Personal note: After three chiropractic-supported pregnancies, my longest labor was six hours. My shortest? Ninety minutes
Chiropractic care is safe for newborns and can help with colic, sleep struggles, reflux, torticollis, and more. Trained pediatric chiropractors use gentle techniques that support baby’s development and comfort from day one
And mama your postpartum body deserves support, too.

There’s something uniquely painful about infertility, especially in a world that often defines motherhood as a woman’s greatest purpose As a little girl, I dreamed only of becoming a mom When we started trying, I never imagined the road ahead would be lined with heartbreak.
Our joy turned to devastation when we learned our long-awaited pregnancy was ectopic, nonviable, and lifethreatening We had to end a pregnancy we desperately wanted I still remember my doctor’s words: “Women get pregnant with one tube all the time ” But after surgery, when I asked if we’d have trouble conceiving again, his solemn response said everything
Years passed. Surgeries. IVF. Then, finally, we welcomed our rainbow baby. And even then, we knew we were among the lucky ones
In October 2024, during Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Month, I felt called to create a space where women didn’t have to grieve or wait alone That’s when Moms4Moms was born: a community rooted in empathy, healing, and connection. By our third gathering, over 25 women came. The need for support was undeniable. Moms4Moms welcomes all moms those navigating infertility, IVF, loss, pregnancy after loss, or simply new motherhood Whether you're a mother-in-waiting or a mama with full arms, you belong here
We host both kid-free and kid-friendly meetups, and our group chat is always open a space to ask questions, share advice, and connect with others who truly understand
Join us when you're ready. You are not alone. We're here for you!

Dear Little One,
I’m so sorry I know everyone says I shouldn’t be sorry because I did nothing wrong. That this is nature’s way. That there was nothing I could have done to make this happen, nor prevent it from happening But it did It did happen and you out of all of us, didn’t deserve it
During those 8 weeks we spent together, I imagined what you’d look like. Boy? Girl? Would you get along with your older brother?
As heartbroken as I am that we’ll never get to meet you, I’m thankful for you You taught and reminded me a few things that no one else could You taught me acceptance Accepting things I can’t control Accepting that the “Big Man Upstairs” has his own plan for us and to have faith and patience in those plans, despite how much we try to plan on our own terms.
You taught me to brave I always thought I was sort of brave But I didn’t realize (or ever thought about) how brave a woman needed to be, having to go through this, both mentally and physically.
Life is so precious and we never know how long we’ll have with those you love So from now on I’ll be sure to love a little harder To make sure I kiss my husband every night before bed and to snuggle with my son as long as he wants to before he falls asleep, despite the pile of dishes calling my name.
3 Clues It’s Time for Extra Support
Before I became a pediatric sleep consultant, I was a first-time mom running on fumes My son would only fall asleep in my arms and wake multiple times a night I was exhausted, overwhelmed, and honestly-I had no idea sleep consultants even existed.
When I finally found one, I was skeptical Could someone really help us? But within just three nights, he was falling asleep independently and staying asleep through the night. That experience changed my life. It gave me my evenings back, restored my mental health, and reminded me that I wasn’t failing-I just needed support That’s what led me to become certified, I knew I wanted to help other families reclaim rest just like we did.
If you’re wondering whether it’s time to ask for help, here are three signs:
Get Amanda’s FREE baby sleep guide at her website: acsleepconsulting com fourth trimester WRITTEN BY AMANDA CARLTON MOM OF 2, LIVES IN MESA
1. Sleep is affecting your mental health.
If you feel overwhelmed, anxious, or emotionally drained, you’re not alone and it’s not just “normal mom stuff ” Sleep deprivation touches everything, and you deserve support.
2. You’ve tried everything and nothing’s working. If you’ve Googled, swaddled, rocked, and re-routed your routines and still feel stuck, a customized sleep plan can make all the difference
3. You’re dreading bedtime.
If sleep has become a nightly battle and your baby only sleeps on you, it doesn’t have to be this hard
Looking back, I wish I trusted my gut sooner I waited too long to ask for help when support brought relief almost immediately. Asking for support wasn’t a sign of weakness-it was the most empowering thing I could have done
Every mom and every birth is different, but for us, the decision for a birth center for my second son turned out to be the best one.
I went 11 days past my due date, and my birth center allowed me up to 14 days before requiring a transfer for induction. Regular checkups showed that baby and I were doing great, so they let me be.
When labor finally began, we headed to the center. Here’s the thing about birth centers: they’re incredibly hands-off in the best way.
When I arrived, no one told me how dilated I was. They didn’t check again. They simply encouraged me to trust my body, and push when it felt right. There were no IVs, no monitors, no loud machines—just freedom to move, breathe, and labor however I needed. I wandered the halls with my husband and doula, doing whatever helped.
At 2 a.m., our son was born. He was placed on my chest immediately, and we had as much uninterrupted bonding time as we wanted
They brought us a huge breakfast tray, and by 6 a.m., we were back home.
Our 3-year-old didn’t even realize we’d left
A birth center isn’t for everyone If you have a high-risk pregnancy or want access to pain medication and longer recovery, a hospital might feel more secure
And that’s okay there’s no wrong way to give birth
But for us, a birth center was the perfect in-between: not a hospital, but not quite home Intimate, empowering, and deeply respectful of the birth process I knew my midwife
I had my full team. And even in the midst of a global pandemic, I felt safe, supported, and strong
Given the choice again, I’d do it the exact same way.

After giving birth, many women experience fatigue, nutrient depletion, hormonal imbalances, and mood fluctuations. IV nutrition offers fast, effective support by delivering essential vitamins, minerals, and hydration directly into the bloodstream— bypassing the digestive system for immediate absorption.
Common postpartum symptoms like low energy, brain fog, hair thinning, and weakened immunity can often be linked to deficiencies in nutrients such as B vitamins, vitamin C, magnesium, and iron IV therapy replenishes these quickly, helping to restore balance, boost energy, and support emotional well-being
Hydration is also key during postpartum recovery, especially for breastfeeding moms IV fluids can improve hydration levels, support milk production, and ease symptoms of fatigue and headaches Contact IV Nutrition Gilbert to help with your postpartum recovery today
We all know the dread of getting into a hot summer car thats been parked in the sun for too long
Thinking about how hot a rear-facing carseat can be for infants makes it unbearable
Every Arizona mama needs a Cool Carats--its the first-of-its-kind car seat cooler featuring pioneering CoolTech™ technology and stylish, child-centered designs
How Cool Carats work:
Freeze the cooler overnight in your freezer, when you’re ready to head out, simply throw it in the car until you arrive at your destination.
After you’ve taken your child out of their car seat, place the car seat cooler across the seat to keep the buckles and seat cool while you and your little one are at the destination. This lowers the temperature of the car seat buckles, straps and seat to 65 degrees!

Six years ago, I was drowning.
After the birth of my son, what I thought would be the most joyful time of my life was quickly overshadowed by crippling postpartum depression and anxiety.
I was trying to do everything for everyone, constantly overthinking, and striving to meet impossible standards. I didn’t realize how much help I needed—until I found it.
That’s when I discovered Women’s Health Innovations of Arizona (WHI)—a licensed outpatient treatment center dedicated to maternal and family mental health care. From the moment I walked through their doors, I felt seen, heard, and supported in a way I hadn’t experienced before. Their guidance has shaped not only my parenting journey but my personal growth as well, including receiving an ADHD diagnosis at age 35 that helped everything suddenly make sense.
Even more powerfully, WHI has become a resource for my entire family. When my oldest stepson began struggling with his own mental health, WHI was the first place I turned. Over the years, we’ve participated in everything from individual therapy and couples counseling to child and family services. WHI doesn’t just support moms—they support families as a whole.
Women’s Health Innovations of Arizona specializes in maternal mental health, providing wraparound services that support women during pregnancy, postpartum, and parenting. Their team includes licensed therapists, support coaches, mentors, and group facilitators who bring compassion, expertise, and a deep understanding of what families need.

BY LITTLE SUNSHINE’S PLAYHOUSE & PRESCHOOL
Parents know that choosing a preschool isn’t just about convenience or proximity It’s about finding a place where your child will thrive The early years of a child’s life are filled with discovery, growth, and important milestones As a parent, you want to ensure the preschool you choose nurtures that development in the best possible way So what exactly makes a preschool “high-quality”?
Our team at Little Sunshine’s Playhouse, a nationally recognized and loved childcare provider, has made a helpful checklist to guide you in your search and to give you the peace of mind that you’re making the right choice for your child
From the moment you walk through the doors, a highquality preschool should feel inviting. The classrooms should be bright, organized, and designed with children’s needs in mind. Look for open-ended materials, spaces that encourage creativity and collaboration, and an overall sense of joy and safety
Don’t underestimate your gut feeling here If it feels like a place where your child would be seen, celebrated, and loved, you’re likely on the right track
The best preschools are built on the strength of their teachers Observe how the educators interact with children Are they down at their level? Do they ask open-ended questions and encourage conversation? High-quality teachers don’t just instruct They inspire Look for schools that invest in professional development, attract experienced educators, and truly value the teacher-child relationship
Young children learn best through play That’s why many of the most respected early education models like Reggio Emilia and Montessori are rooted in exploration, imagination, and meaningful hands-on experiences.
Ask how the school fosters curiosity. Do they support inquiry-based learning? Are children encouraged to follow their interests, work on projects, and express themselves in different ways? The right preschool will honor each child’s unique learning style and developmental pace
You deserve to know what’s happening in your child’s day Whether it’s through daily updates, photos, or a dedicated parent app, a high-quality preschool keeps you in the loop and values your voice as part of the learning team
You should feel confident that your child is in safe hands
Ask about the school’s safety protocols, cleanliness standards, and teacher-to-child ratios A reputable preschool will be transparent about its procedures and always put children’s wellbeing first
Ask about communication methods during your tour, and how the school supports your family throughout your child’s time there
It’s not just about ABCs and 123s A great preschool helps children build essential life skills like empathy, cooperation, independence, and emotional regulation
Look for signs that children are taught how to express feelings, navigate conflict, and care for themselves and others.
These are the foundational skills that set children up for success not just in kindergarten, but throughout life.
