In2023wecelebratedGod’sprovisioninmakingEastminsteracornerstoneoffaithand compassioninourcommunityfor75years.Evenasweweregivingthanks,theHoly Spiritwasatworkbehindthescenes,nudgingusonwardHow?Throughtheinspiring generosityofasmallgroupofmemberswhoaremakingGod’sgracemanifestbygiving inexcessof$2.6millionfor“aboveandbeyond”ministryandmission.Letmeexplain.
InDecemberof2022,thechurchreceivedanunexpectedgift.LelandandCornelia Williams,whoservedinmanywaysincludingleadingtheAlphaProgram,gavetheir childreninstructionsthat,uponLelandandCornelia’sdeathstothislife,theywanteda portionoftheirestatetogotoEastminster.Comingasitdidjustafewweeksbefore
ebration,theHolySpiritusedthegifttopromptlistening,quietconversations,and g g y opportunities.Thoseconversationscontinuedforseveralmonths,crystallizinginthe InspirationalGivingInitiative

ThankstotheHolySpirit,theWilliams’generositywaslikeapebblelandinginapond,creatingripplesofgrace extendingoutwardinconcentriccircles.First,itwasafewleaddonorsquietlyopeningtheirheartsandhandsforthis effort.Then,inspiredbynewsofthisgenerosity,ourStewardshipministryteamfollowedsuit,significantlyincreasing theirpledgestoEastminster’sOperatingBudgetthispastFall.TheDeaconsandElderswerethenextconcentriccircleof thegraceripples,followedbythelargerchurchfamily,sothattodaywecancelebrateGod’sprovisionthroughbotha strengthenedoperatingbudgetfor2024andtheInspirationalGivingInitiativegiftsthatwillenableustoaddress additionalneedsandopportunities.
TheEastminsterInspirationalGivingInitiativeisanopportunitytoexpressourgratitudeforthepastandpassionately embracetheministryandmissionthatliesahead.Thisinitiativeseekstobuilduponthestrongfoundationlaidby generationsoffaithfulgiversbeforeus,ensuringthatEastminstercontinuestobeabeaconofChrist’slightforyearsto come.
ACommitmenttoGrowth:
TheInspirationalGivingInitiative,whichisseparatefromtheoperatingbudget,focusesondonationsmadeby2025, withtheimpactofthisincreasedgenerosityripplingoutwardandpropellingourministriesforwardthrough2026.
Donorsparticipatinginthisinitiativehavebeenaskedtomaintaintheircurrentcontributionstothechurch’soperating budget,whilealsopledgingadditionalsupportforthisspecialinitiative.

ThroughtheInspirationalGivingInitiative,thegenerosityofourdonorsensuresthatEastminsterChurchcontinuesto beavibrantcenteroffaith,service,andoutreach,anditwillallowusto:
Improveourfacilities.ThenewsoundsystemintheSanctuaryisthefruitofthiseffort.Replacingthe60-year-old windowsintheAdministrationBuilding,andenhancingtheCourtyard,theAdultReceptionHall,andthe ChristianLifeCenter,amongotheritems,willmakeourchurchcampusmorewelcoming,moreusable,andmore energyefficient(atleast40%offundsgiven)
Investinthenextgenerationofleaders.Contributionswillallowustocallarecentseminaryorcollegegraduateto serveforonetotwoyears,providingthemwithvaluableministryexperienceandenrichingourchurchfamily.
Expandourreachanddeepenourimpact.Additionalclassesandstudieswillbeestablished,fosteringspiritual growthandwelcominganevenlargercommunitytoconnectwithEastminster
Enhanceacenteroflifeandoutreach.TheChristianLifeCenter,alreadyastrength,willofferexpandedclasses andopportunitiestoreachallagegroups,withincreasedemphasisonwholeandhealthyliving,includingboth spiritualandphysicalcomponents(atleast22%offundsgivenfortheabovethreebulletpointspertainingtoministry andprogramemphasis).

ThisSpringmarksaremarkablemilestonefor EastminsterPresbyterianChurchaswecelebrate30 yearsofdedicatedservicebyTonyTaylor,anEPC Sextonandcherishedmemberofourstaff.SinceMarch 1,1994,Tonyhasbeenanintegralpartofourchurch family,leavinghismarkonthephysicalspaceand, moreimportantly,ontheheartsofthosewhowalk throughourdoors
Tony’sjourneyatEastminsterbegansomewhat unexpectedly.Initiallyunsureaboutacareerasa sexton,hequicklyfoundasenseofpurposeinhisrole. “Theygavemeallthesekeys,”herecallswithachuckle, “andIhadahardtimeopeningthedoorsatfirst!”This initialchallengeignitedapassionforhiswork,leading himtoservethechurchforsixyearsonthenightshift beforetransitioningtomornings.

Overthepastthreedecades,Tonyhaswitnessedand beenapartofsignificantchangesatEastminsterand hasplayedacrucialroleinthosechanges.Afew projectsherecallsincludetheconstructionofthe ChristianLifeCenter,theMemorialGarden,the sanctuaryrenovation,andtheadditionofbathrooms andanelevatorinthesanctuary.Beyondthesephysical changes,Tonyremembershisinvolvementwiththe CircleofGivinginitiative,givinguphisweekendsand workingtocontribute.Hismanager,AlexRogers, furtheremphasizesTony’sdedication,“Tonyisone oneofthehardestworkersI’veevermet.His punctuality,attendance,andcommitmenttothewellbeingofthechurcharetrulyexemplary.”
However,Tony’simpactgoesfarbeyondbricksand mortarHereflects,“ThisjobhaschangedmylifeIt’s beenablessing.IwenttoDreherHighSchooland neverevenknewthischurchexisted.”Hisworkat Eastminsteropenedhiseyestoavibrantcommunity filledwithkindandwelcomingindividuals.Heshares, “Insidethischurch,thereareallkindsofpeoplewith goodhearts.Beingwiththemhastrulychangedmy heart”Thissentimentresonatesdeeplywithhis manager,Alex,whoobserves,“Tonyhasbeenan exampleofhowEastminstercanbecomeahomeand howwestrivetomakeitfeellikeahomeforothers”

LastFebruary,JohnHartandIwenttovisitmissions partnerNkhomaMissionHospitalinMalawi.This hospitalserves500,000withonly250hospitalbeds.The staffarefaithfulanddedicatedtoservingthepeoplein theircommunity.Comparingthistoasimilar250-bed hospital(Goldsboro,NC):TheNkhomaHospitalhasa budgetof$1.8million,whiletheUShospitalhasabudget of$703million;TheNkhomaHospitalhas300onstaff comparedto1,400inGoldsboro.Eastminsterishelping buildthreeoperatingroomsatNkhomain2024.

DuringtheSummermonths,itisourcustomtooffera single,combinedAdultSundaySchoolclass.Thisyear, buildingonourstudyofKnowingOurFaithand CultivatingtheFruitoftheSpiritduringtheprogram year,wearegoingtorevisittheseminalstatementof ReformedChristianFaiththatistheWestminster ConfessionandCatechism.Theworkofthe WestminsterAssemblyinthe17thcentury(16441647)haslongbeenthefoundationofPresbyterian faithandpracticearoundtheworld.Andyet,weknow relativelylittleaboutthegatheringthatproducedthese standardsorthecircumstancesthatmadeitnecessary WhoweretheWestminsterDivinesandwhywerethey convenedforthispurpose?Whatrelevancedoesthis 17thcenturyarticulationofthefaith,composedbefore theoverthrowofroyaltyrannyortheabolitionof slavery,haveforustoday?Whatcanwelearnfrom thesestandardsthatspeakstoourexperience,our yearnings,ourcuriosities,ouranxieties?
TheWestminsterConfessionandCatechismhavelong beendefiningdocumentsinthereligiousformationof PresbyterianandReformedChristians.Howthe
divinesarticulatethechiefendofhumanlife,the natureandpurposeofscripture,thepresenceofChrist intheSacraments,themeaningandproperuseofthe Commandments,theunderstandingofsinand redemptionandtheworkofChristallcontinueto exertinfluenceoverandplaceboundariesaround whatPresbyteriansrightlyaffirmandbelieveInmany waysweremainWestminsterChristians(evenaswe aremembersofEastminster).
OurpurposethisSummeristowalkcarefullyand thoughtfullythroughthefaithofWestminster,notto discoverwhatwebelieve,buttoexplorehowwhatwe believeadherestoandhassurpassedthistraditional formulationofthefaith.EverySundaymorningat 9:00,wewilllistencloselytothevoicesofthe WestminsterDivinesastheyechothroughthe centuriesandponderthegreatmysteriesofGod’s presenceandpowerthatarealwaysgreaterthanour owncapacitytoutter.

WhatIsVacationBibleSchool?
VacationBibleSchool(VBS)isanexcitingSummerweekthatbringskids,EPCvolunteers,andourcommunity together.Duringthefour-dayevent,childrenexploretheirfaiththroughBiblestories,music,crafts,andgames.Since 2006,we'veconsistentlyhadanywherefrom225-330children,agesrising4K-rising6thgradeenrolledeachSummer.
WhyVBSMatters:
1.BuildingFaith-VBSprovidesauniqueopportunityfor childrentolearnaboutGod’sloveinadynamicand engagingway.It’sachanceforthemtojumpintothestories oftheBibleinanimmersivewaythattheywillrememberas theygrow.
2.Connecting-Thechildrengetachancetodeeplyinteract withtheirpeersaswellasourEPCvolunteersofallagesina seasonoftheyearwhenfamiliesareoftengoinginmany differentdirections.Ourtweentrackforrising5thand6th graderstakesthemoutintothecommunityfordifferent opportunitiesforinteractingwithothersaswell
