D

ear Eastminster Family,

Back in the mid 1980s, when I first visited Eastminster as a young graduate student, I remember hearing about a Sunday School group called the Sunshine Class. The class, which intentionally welcomed differently abled people, met in the entrance lobby of Thompson Hall, in what is now called the Sunshine Room. Jim and Lou Ebersole were among the members who helped teach and support that class. For a glimpse of the beauty of how God works, read how the Ebersoles’ engagement and generosity are still making a difference today (see p. 16).

Our "Dreaming & Discerning" tagline of "Open Doors 24/7" includes Eastminster hosting groups and organizations that positively impact people's lives. For over 70 years, we've been the sponsor organization for various Scout Troops, trusting God to work through the relationships, teaching, experiences, and fellowship to add brushstrokes of character, service, and selflessness to the lives of children and youth. Turn to page 4 to read how the lessons one young man learned recently literally proved lifesaving.

I pray you will find the above-mentioned stories inspiring. And in grateful response to God's ongoing presence and work in our midst, I also pray you will read these pages asking, "how Lord, are you calling me to grow as a disciple of yours?" For example, read the articles on the Saturday March Out Missions Day (pages 14-15) and on our Holy Week worship opportunities (p. 9). You'll find information on our March 21-23 Habitat Build and the Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter services on pages 1819.

Finally, with this being the first issue of Eastminster Today, since the end of 2023, I want to say "thank you." As a pastor, there is no greater joy than seeing people following Jesus Christ in word and deed.

Our Advent & Christmas seasons saw wonderful participation in every area of the church's life. By God's grace and your intentional engagement, that momentum has carried over to 2024 with increased involvement in worship, Sunday School, and evening seminars, and through service both within and beyond 3200 Trenholm. I give thanks to God for you, Eastminster! It's a privilege to be your pastor.

A HERO AMONG US

Troop 10 Member Receives Honor Medal ANNA MILLS COX

Eastminster is a proud supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, sponsoring Cub Scout Pack 10 and Boy Scout Troop 10, since 1951.

More than 340 Eagle Scouts have come up through Troop 10.

Recently, Troop 10 member and Eagle Scout, Joseph Pope, received the Scouting’s highest award for lifesaving- the Honor Medal with Crossed Palms. The Honor Medal with Crossed Palms is awarded only in exceptional cases in which a youth member or adult leader has demonstrated unusual heroism and extraordinary skill in saving a life at extreme risk to self, and that is exactly what Joseph Pope did.

On September 2, 2023, Joseph and one of his friends, Charles, were traveling back to their apartment in Clemson, SC, when they saw a burning car on the side of the road and pulled over to help. They found two people trapped inside (one a student at Clemson University) and rescued them before the car engulfed in flames. Joseph, a humble hero, said, “I don’t think I did anything special.

I‘m just glad God put Charles and me in a position to be able to help, and that those involved were able to recover.”

Flynn Bowie, scoutmaster of Troop 10, the Eastminster Presbyterian Church troop to which Joseph belongs, said, “It’s extremely gratifying to see a young man demonstrate Scouting’s principles of helpfulness, kindness, and bravery and use the skills he has learned to preserve the lives of two people.”

Since the Honor Medal with Crossed Palms was created 100 years ago, only 277 of these medals have been awarded nationally. Eastminster is proud of Joseph Pope and for his courage and heroism.

STRONGER

Mind, Body, Soul

CAROLINE C. BENNETT I want to be stronger. It’s a common goal in a new year.

Whether stronger in body, stronger in prayer life, stronger emotionally, stronger in being patient, or stronger in relationships, we all have the desire to strengthen some area of our life. This season, Eastminster has taken that desire a few steps forward by offering a wide variety of next-step options to give members and beyond the tools necessary for accomplishing their goals of strengthening.

On January 21, nearly 200 adults, youth, and children filled the Christian Life Center (CLC) for our sixth annual Core: Mind, Body, Soul event. While adults worked out together in the sampler class of Tai Chi/Pilates/Yoga/Meditation, young parents with children took Family Fitness, and teens sweated it out in High Impact Training. No matter the fitness level, bodies were challenged, endorphins flowed, and stresses released.

“This year, I'm striving to set good examples for my

daughter on balance, relationships, and overall healthy living. It's not enough to simply tell a child how you want them to act or what you want them to do better; you have to demonstrate that behavior yourself,” says Sarah, who also has been taking the Sunday night follow-up class, “(W)holy Healthy Living,” with Bryce.

Sarah’s parents-in-law took part in the mind-body-soul event as well. “Bill and I have set a goal of losing some weight and gaining strength, especially in our cores, this year,” says Jackie Stallings. “My only previous fitness classes have been through our Prayer & Pilates Small Group, but since Core, I have attended both Buff Bones and Monday Pilates in the CLC.” Far more than just bulking up biceps or boosting moods, exercise greatly impacts sleep health, gut health, and heart health– a tip emphasized by the three physicians who led a whole-health class at Core. Drs. Will Brearley (cardiologist), Sark Derderian (pulmonary/sleep health), and March Seabrook (gastroenterology) shared their wisdom on the physiological effects of stress, as well as proactive steps on preventing these impacts.

To continue and broaden the conversation, these doctors – plus a long slate of additional professionals in a variety of fields – are speaking at follow-up classes on Sunday and Wednesday nights this Winter/Spring season. “(W)holy Healthy Living” is on Sundays, 56:15pm, and “Bountiful Living” is held on Wednesdays, 6-7:15pm – a class Bill and Jackie Stallings have been enjoying.

It’s not just members of Eastminster who are signing up for these mind-body-soul classes. Regulars of the CLC, like Libby Foreman and Barb Covington, are moving beyond fitness workouts to enjoy more at EPC.

Together, they joined a Women’s Small Group over this past year and more recently signed up for the evening “Bountiful Living” class.

“I have found the classes to be rewarding physically and mentally. I have met many new friends and look forward to them each week,” says Barb. Libby agrees.

“I have found the people in our classes to be welcoming and generous. I am amazed by them!” she says. Building healthy relationships is a natural byproduct of group exercise and nighttime classes, and it’s also the topic on February 28, as part of the “Bountiful Living” series.

But what about those who are struggling with mental health and trying to navigate issues, like ADHD or addiction or grief, with loved ones or themselves? Are there classes that help in these areas? Absolutely yes.

With beautiful honesty and transparency, Core speaker Rev. Dr. Scott Weimer of Atlanta opened the door for conversations on mental health issues.

Now, as a follow-up, local professionals in various areas of mental health are part of the Wednesday/Sunday nights’ series.

And as visitors Libby and Barb confirm, this church is a welcoming and safe place for people of all ages and fitness levels and from all backgrounds. If there’s a desire to grow stronger in mind, body, or soul, Eastminster can help.

“Through Core’s follow-up classes, I hope to gain insight on ways to improve my spiritual, mental, and physical health, so that I can be the best version of myself for the people that I love,” adds Sarah. “I want my daughter to be able to look back one day and say, ‘My Mom was a strong Mom. She could do anything she set her mind to, and so can I!’"

EASTMINSTER’S PASTOR IN RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Inspirational Giving/Donaho Teaching Church Fund DR. DOUGLASS KEY One of the exciting initiatives made possible by the Inspirational Giving Fund is the launching of the Eastminster Pastor in Residency Program. With additional financial support from the Donaho Teaching Church Fund, the Eastminster Residency Program will welcome a newly graduated seminary student onto our pastoral staff for a two-year immersion in the practice of ministry. Eastminster will benefit from the energy and creativity of a newly ordained pastor while the resident will benefit from the opportunities our congregation provides for exploring the full range of pastoral roles and tasks, from worship leadership to congregational care and mission.

In recent years, pastoral residencies have come to serve a vital role in helping newly ordained pastors reflect on and apply what they have learned in Seminary while also discerning the path God has for them to pursue in service to the Church. The Eastminster resident will spend a considerable amount of their time engaged in what we call core areas of ministry (Preaching and Worship Leadership, Congregational Care, Intergenerational Faith Formation, and Church Administration and Leadership), while rotating through more intensive, shorter term exposures to the other ways Eastminster lives out its calling (things like Evangelism, Stewardship, and Missions).

The focus of the Eastminster Residency is to cultivate effective leaders for congregational ministry committed to the Reformed tradition’s historical emphasis on excellent preaching, teaching, PAGE 8

and pastoral care. Embedded in our highly collaborative pastoral staff, our resident will have the opportunity to explore his or her individual strengths for pastoral ministry in an environment that encourages experimentation and innovation.

The Pastor in Residency Program will further establish Eastminster as a teaching church. It will involve the entire membership in the shaping and forming of the next generation of leaders for the Presbyterian Church and spread the good news of the mission and ministry of this great congregation of God’s people far and wide.

EMBRACING HOLY WEEK

March 24-March 31, 2024 FREDNA LEE

On Thursday of Holy Week, Jesus led the disciples through the traditional Passover meal and, while doing so, gave us the model for the Lord’s Supper. At this meal, Jesus demonstrated the importance of humility and service by washing the feet of his disciples. How might you embrace humility and service during Lent – Footcare Ministry, Washington Street Soup Cellar, Thursdays at Transitions, or by participating in our March-out Missions Saturday? Our Maundy Thursday service on March 28th at 7pm will include scripture, the Word, song, and Communion.

Later on Thursday evening, Jesus would be betrayed by Judas, arrested in the Garden of Gethsemene, mocked and rejected, tried and convicted.

Holy Week…what images come to mind when you hear these two words? But even more importantly, how would you answer this question, “What are you doing for Holy Week?” Well, the first thing is to dust off your Bible and read the Gospels – any one of them will do. In all four Gospels, the Triumphal Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday begins the Holy Week narrative: Matthew 21, Mark 11, Luke 19, and John 12. As you continue to read, you will begin to grasp the scope of this most critical week. For Jesus’ band of followers, it was a week of mood swings beginning with the highest of highs to the lowest of lows, then ending in total disbelief and shock at the discovery of an empty tomb and then joy at the sight of a risen Christ.

On Palm Sunday, Jesus was hailed as a hero as he entered Jerusalem with throngs waving palm branches.

Eastminster’s Palm Sunday worship on March 24th will include, as always, a children’s processional complete with waving palms; the 2nd Graders graduating from Worship Discovery will lead the processional at 9am. Also, we will be blessed to have our latest class of new members join at 11:15am.

Good Friday-the day of Crucifixion. At 7pm on March 29th, our Good Friday service includes The Seven Last Words of Jesus and hymns such as, Were You There When They Crucified My Lord, Ah, Holy Jesus, and O Sacred Head Now Wounded. The service dramatically ends in complete silence and utter darkness.

Three days later, Easter Sunday arrives – March 31st the day of Resurrection! Join Eastminster on Easter Sunday and celebrate the Resurrection. Our unique Sunrise service will be held in the Courtyard at 6:30 am (Thompson Hall if it rains). Then, plan to return for one of three exciting services: Traditional at 8:45am and 10:30am in the sanctuary or Jubilee 10:30am in Thompson Hall. Join friends and family in the courtyard for breakfast between services.

Holy Week-read your Bible to walk in the footsteps of Jesus, attend worship and embrace the emotions of Holy Week, and then celebrate the salvation of a risen Christ with your Eastminster family.

As you continue to read through the Gospels, you will see Jesus’ ministry move at warp speed from Monday to Wednesday. Jesus cleansed the temple, wept over Jerusalem, had his authority questioned, predicted the destruction of Jerusalem, promised and prophesied, taught and foretold.

REV. NICK DEMUYNCK

Celebrating Pastor Nick’s Ministry at EPC 2020-2024 EMILY HIGGINS - DIR. OF MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH In 2020, Nick was hired as the Associate Pastor for High School Youth and Younger Adults, but his influence has stretched far beyond that job title.

What made Nick Demuynck a great pastor is his heart for people. His ability to relate to and embrace people from all walks of life was a gift to Eastminster Presbyterian for the past four years. He was faithful in leading our high school ministry, college ministry, and young adults, but Nick could also be found in Day School Chapel or behind the pulpit on any given week.

Children, youth, young adults, and even not so young adults were drawn to his warm, welcoming presence.

Nick began his ministry at Eastminster at a tumultuous time. Although many of his first interactions with the youth were socially distanced and over Zoom calls, he persisted, and the youth program not only survived the pandemic, but has thrived in the years following. In 2023, Eastminster served over 200 teens and young adults. The youth of

“During my sophomore year of high school I was going through a really hard time. Nick was one of the people who helped me get through it. When my mom reached out to him, he was more than quick to respond,” says Annie. “He asked what my favorite smoothie was. He came to my house with a smoothie and told me he would always be there to listen. If I had to thank anyone that helped me get through my hard time, it would be Nick. I could not have asked for a better youth leader.” That is exactly who Eastminster Presbyterian has come to know Nick to be in his time with us. Faithful, steady, thoughtful, and full of heart.

“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.”

The Lord’s work through Pastor Nick Demuynck has been a blessing to our congregation. He will be greatly missed, but we are excited to see him flourish as Senior Pastor to First Presbyterian Church in Wilson, North Carolina. His obedience will surely bring goodness to the people of Wilson. Thank you, Pastor Nick, for your service.

MARCH OUT MISSIONS DAY

Serve Your Community and Help Feed the World DR. BEN SLOAN Last year, we celebrated our 75th anniversary, and we had a special March Out Missions Day. This year, we are continuing that event, as it went so well and was so encouraging.

This year, we will meet Saturday, March 2, at 8:30 am, in the CLC Gym. There will be a light pick-up breakfast. We’ll have a prayer and then be encouraged to do the work of the Lord to help those in need- the forgotten, the poor, the hungry, the hopeless.

Our main event this year will be “Rise Against Hunger.” We are hoping to pack 2,000 meals in two hours. This is non-perishable food and very basic. To us, it may look unappetizing, but to someone hungry, it is life-saving. I remember going to a refugee camp in Kenya and seeing one tribe that had not been allocated any food at all for two weeks. One mother had given her meager ration of sorghum to her child, and she passed out right in front of me from starvation. She would have loved one of these Rise Against Hunger packets. South Sudan is one of the regular recipients.

Rise Against Hunger has packaged over 600 million meals for the hungry in the world. 783 million are critically hungry in our world. SC is the 8th hungriest state with a 12.6% food insecurity rate. So, Eastminster leads our SouperBowl of Caring drive, which goes to local food banks. Our USC v. Clemson

Last year, it was my joy to visit almost every group. I saw people getting to know one another while sorting food at Harvest Hope Food Bank. I saw some people passing each other clothes to be sorted. I saw a few with more paint on them than on the walls (though it IS hard to measure). But it was fun! It was a great memory and way to use your day to make a difference.

Food Drive in November raised over 3,500 pounds of food (compared to 350 pounds raised normally in that same period last year). Rise Against Hunger, however, goes to famine relief in war-torn countries and countries facing drought relief. Instead of just listening to the devastation, we have the opportunity to do something about it.

On March Out Missions Day, we will also have opportunities to do other work like: painting walls at Transitions; cleaning up at Oliver Gospel Mission; arranging and sorting clothes and food at Cooperative Ministries; sorting clothes at EMS Closet for needy students of District 1; packing hygiene kits (young children are welcome here). We will also be repairing a house that day through Habitat for Humanity. Later in March (March 21, 22, 23), we at Eastminster are leading an inter-church Habitat build (Jasper Street in West Columbia). Please put that on your calendar.We will have two shifts, and sign-up sheets are coming.

The Bible tells us to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. So we are all called to be missionaries, whether we physically go out or if we just help a neighbor next door, or if we make a hygiene kit for someone at Footcare, Transitions, or for children preparing to go to foster homes. God has placed us here to make a difference for him. It may be by inviting someone to church or telling them about our faith; it may be by loving the hurting, sick or grieving; it may be by helping the poor even though you don’t know them.

THE SENSORY ROOM

Ebersole Special Needs Planned Giving ANDREA FERREE & BILL COLLINS A sensory room is a space designed to help an individual with sensory processing difficulties develop coping skills and regulate their brain’s response to stimuli. In some cases, a sensory space can be a whole room, or it can simply be a space set aside in a corner of a larger room. Here at Eastminster, we are blessed to have an entire room dedicated to helping those with sensory processing difficulties. Our sensory room has been tailored to the specific needs of the members who will be using it. Specifically designed for individuals with ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and Down Syndrome, Eastminster’s new sensory room was designed with EPC’s members in mind. The goal is to promote self-organization, be a calming space, help

with sensory integration, and act as a skills training hub (not to mention, it is a great inclusion space that all students can explore together). In practice, Eastminster’s new sensory space will be a place for kiddos with sensory processing difficulties who may get overwhelmed during a church service (man, it can be hard to sit still for an hour!). Or, if your kiddo finds it difficult to be in larger groups, like Sunday School or Chapel, our new sensory space could be the perfect place for him or her to come back into their body, calm their proprioceptive system, re-organize, and self-regulate. The Eastminster Sensory Room was funded by a gift given by Dr. Jim and Lou Ebersole. CRADLE ROLL 2023

Celebrating New Life at Eastminster REV. CROSKEYS ROYALL At our 9 am worship on Sunday, January 7th, we had an intentional moment to celebrate the gift of babies in our midst that were born in 2023. What a blessing to see so many parents and families who brought their newest additions to join us for this joyous occasion that we call our “Cradle Roll.”

Around 30 households gathered with us that morning, and it was a great chance for them to meet each other and to greet the babies who will all be around their own children’s ages.

What a sweet cohort of kids this is and what fun it will be to track them as they grow. Before you know it, they will be gathering in the same room for our Baccalaureate service as they graduate high school.

Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these" (Matthew 19:14). Jesus welcomed children with love and compassion, and he blessed them as a sign of God's grace and care. As a church, we try to follow Jesus' example, and our Cradle Roll allowed us a moment to uplift them and remember that. In doing this, we affirmed our responsibilities as a church to care for the babies and their families because,

at Eastminster, we believe that every child is an incredible gift from God, and we are called to nurture them in the faith and support them in their growth.

At our Cradle Roll, we also looked to support the parents in their roles as the primary nurturers of their young ones.

Parenting is a challenging and rewarding task, and the church family is a source of encouragement and guidance for them.

We pray for God's wisdom and strength for all of our families who had babies born in 2023, and we look forward to walking with them through life in faith.

Parents who wish for their children born in 2023 to be pictured in the New Life section of EPC’s 2023 Annual Report should send a baby photo to Blythe Lewis at blewis@eastminsterpres.org.
