SHERYL ZIMMERER Logos Public Charter School Since 2017, Sheryl Zimmerer has served as the Executive Director for Logos Public Charter School, the largest, non-virtual charter school in the state of Oregon. Under her leadership, the K-12 school that serves Jackson and Josephine County students has reported its highest graduation rate ever (95%) and has been voted one of the best non-profits to work for in Oregon 5 years in a row. Since her daughters have grown up, she now lives in Talent with her husband in the house they rebuilt after the 2020 Oregon Almeda wildfire with their two spoiled golden retrievers.

DEANNA ELLIOT Centered Physical Therapy + Wellness In 2018 Deanna started Centered Physical Therapy & Wellness, where physical therapy is integrated in a holistic manner to help heal the body at the root of its problem. TREVER YARRISH The Hivve Trever’s drive and passion for creating amazing experiences for other people has led him on some incredible adventures: from performing for people on stage to starring in a film; from serving coffee as a barista to becoming the marketing director of Dutch Bros. Coffee; from marketing director to co-founder of the marketing company Define Your Edge; from being a childhood programmer with a passion for design to co-founding Zeal.

On any given day you may find Trever designing an app, teaching a design process, helping someone troubleshoot CSS, building a Kinex roller coaster with his two sons, or sneaking off with his wife for a date night.

JASON KELLOGG Outback Pool & Spa Jason was born and raised in Grants Pass. He graduated from University of Oregon with a Bachelor of Arts in English. He has worked for Outback Pool & Spa since high school and purchased the company in July of 2022. His family loves the southern Oregon community and enjoys serving the community through wellness and water care.

M

eet the Meraz Family: Haylee, Xeric, Kaya and Nakotah! They have lived so close to the Grants Pass High

School for eight years that when the band practices, the family can choose whether to grab popcorn or noise-canceling headphones!

Haylee and Xeric met in Tempe, Arizona in 2008 and started dating in 2009. They were both in massage therapy school and, luckily, Xeric had to retake an anatomy course offered at night where he met the love of his life. They married in 2013 and had Kaya in 2014, followed by Nakotah in 2016. When the couple was pregnant with their son, they moved to Grants Pass where Haylee was originally from. She even lived in the same neighborhood and on the same street where the family is settled now.

Xeric is from Arizona, but when his pregnant wife got tired of the heat, he readily agreed to a move. Haylee works with a chiropractor assisting with treatment, and is certified in kinesiotape. “I Your Local Community Magazine

am a body worker at heart,” she says. Xeric is self-employed and teaches breakdancing.

He used to perform with the native contemporary dance company, Dancing Earth, and hopes to develop a youth-based breakdancing community.

Kaya, the couple’s daughter, is a wonderfully expressive soul. They describe her as thoughtful, a social butterfly, inquisitive, and an animal lover. She’s also a famous prankster within their home.

She’ll pull one over on anyone when she gets a chance! And she loves to bake with her grandma - who happens to live next door. When Kaya has free time, she likes to paint, draw, skate in her Heelys or ice skates, eat sushi, swim at the YMCA, origami, and make Perler bead creations.

Nakotah is clever, humorous, and has a deep sense of fairness. He has a special way of making people feel loved and seen. This 7-year-old boy has already performed professionally as a breakdancer and has beat two different Zelda games.

Kotah likes to visit his friends’ farms and go swimming when he has down time.

He also plays soccer and enjoys sketching in his sketchbook. Both children enjoy playing chess and the matches against one another can get pretty intense!

Meet Your Neighbor

All four Meraz members have been known to start a friendly dance battle at home, and are excited to see breakdancing debut in the 2025 Paris Olympics. They follow both breakdancing and gymnastics on a world level.

They also enjoy hiking at Cathedral Hill, their favorite spot, and find new ways to be creative and play games together.

When the Meraz family takes vacations, they head to the Oregon Coast, southern Utah, or to see family around the La Sal Mountains. On birthdays, they like to celebrate in an ‘upside down’ way by starting the day with presents and cake!

On Saturday nights, you can usually find the family cozy at home, often enjoying fresh air in the hammock. They like to relax with games or a family movie.

When Haylee and Xeric get a date night, they go to Rivers Edge when they want to feel fancy. Otherwise, they just like to spend time together outside. They also

work out, practice gymnastics moves, listen to music, or other active adventures. And, the Meraz family adores a good inside joke among them!

important to the Meraz family. They frequent Donutland, American Alpha Training, Saigon Xich Lo, and other area hot spots.

Hercules

H

e has superhuman strength… enough to carry two building columns! It’s the Greek god

Hercules! No, wait, it’s our Petable Pet of the Month!

Hercules got his name because his family loves the movie Sandlot. The middle child in the family even carries the name Benny (older brother is Andrew and younger brother is Cruz). The movie has unified the boys in the family more than once. They repeat phrases constantly and never tire of watching the film. It only made sense that the family name their first pet after the dog in the movie.

Hercules is a Golden Retriever who just turned 10 in October. The family sometimes affectionately calls him Hercs.

When a family had a litter of puppies a decade ago and were unable to care for them, Jennifer and Brian Quezada traveled for two hours to get one. They thought the puppies were all girls, but one was extra chubby and “cute as a button.” When they picked him up, their hearts melted. “The kids had no idea that we were getting a new addition to the family. They were so ecstatic and couldn’t wait to show him off !”

Hercules loves dog biscuits of any kind. He’s not picky! And if you start running, he’ll chase you until you stop, and then jump on you like he’s giving hugs. He’s gentle for his size, but definitely wants to share his affections.

He may sound strong, but he’s a softie at heart. He just wants to be with his people, his head under their feet while Your Local Community Magazine

they watch a movie. Whether the family is working around the house or playing baseball at the park, Hercules is in the background of every picture.

To know him is to love him. Hercules is the most loving dog you will ever meet.

“Our family joke about Hercules is that he’s not a very good guard dog,” Jennifer says. While he has a gentle demeanor, he’s

still protective over his family. It’s just that anyone who meets him immediately falls in love! Except for maybe bees. He once got stung on his tongue and swelled up. “That was one expensive bee sting,” Jennifer admits.

Hercules is rather particular about where he sleeps each night.

He won’t lie on any blanket or pillow his family buys him. Instead, he walks the house from end to end, his nails clicking across the floors, trying to decide who gets him that night. Sometimes he chooses Mom and Dad. Sometimes not! When he decides, he’ll go to their door until he’s invited in. Then, spin two circles and flop down on the bed.

This dog loves being outside so much that when he’s on a walk and knows he’s on the way back home, he’ll lay down to avoid going home. “One time it started snowing and he laid in the middle of the street and would not budge,” Jennifer shares.

“I had to pick him up and walk about a quarter of a mile back to our house. I was so upset but I was laughing with my family on how ridiculous I probably looked carrying an 80-pound dog in the snow!”

The hardest part of having Hercules is that this family is highly active and can’t always take their furry member along! But this loving, kind dog makes you feel like you are never alone. And, most importantly, “Hercules is a reflection of our love for each other and the values and morals we instill in our children.”

The Conway Quad

“Q

uad” is the latin root for four. Quadriceps are a group of four muscles in

the human leg that work together to kick, run, and jump. Similar to the Conway Quad: four siblings with individual skills and personality traits that work together to help give shape to the Conway family.

The first of the Conway Quad is 12-year-old Desmond Conway. Desmond is an engineer at heart. His favorite subject at school is algebra and he wants to work for NASA someday. He practices his engineering skills through his Lego hobby. Desmond knows that being a space engineer requires good physical health just as much as possessing the smarts, so he stays fit by playing soccer. Soccer is good for socialization as well; Desmond enjoys spending time with his friends on the soccer field and playing video games.

As the oldest boy and big brother to three siblings, Desmond frequently has opportunities to develop fatherly skills and already knows lots of “dad jokes.”

Desmond’s favorite family activities are watching movies and traveling. He has been to Iceland and someday would like to go to Greece. Since he is learning Spanish, he would also like to go to Mexico.

The second Conway Quad is Finley.

She is 10 years old and the Conway family artist. She was born with a fingerprint swirl on the palm of her hand. Finley loves to craft and she is learning to play the guitar and piano. She hopes to play the violin someday. Finley draws a lot of inspiration for her artwork from the outdoors; animals (particularly horses), and the color turquoise. Finley plays soccer like her older brother; she does gymnastics, too, which is a sport with a creative side to it…perfect for Finley!

Finley is a Swiftie and a Disney fan. She dreams of having her very own horse and of visiting the Australian Zoo. Perhaps she will go to Australia to receive inspiration for her own artwork or to inspire her class; Finley wants to be an art teacher when she grows up. Art and coffee seem to go hand in hand, so Finley

says she will also work at Dutch Bros.

Third, we have seven-year-old Ruby Conway. Ruby is silly and loves to laugh.

She is artistic and her creativity is expressed through gymnastics and theater. Ruby is taking an acting class at school and she competes on the same gymnastics team as her sister. Ruby likes to play golf with her family, and make blanket forts in her living room. Just like the other Conway Quads, Ruby likes to travel. Her favorite vacation spot is Florida, and someday she would like to go to Africa to see the chimpanzees, her favorite animal.

Ruby is energetic. She cartwheels more than she walks and you can almost always find her outside on her scooter. Even her favorite music group has an energetic name…Fitz and Tantrums. That energy will come in handy when she grows up to become a gymnastics coach.

The final Conway Quad is Crosby Conway, and he is five.

Crosby is going to be a coffee ninja at Dutch Bros when he grows up. He loves to play soccer and go to ninja class. But as stealthy as he is, he is equally as funny and loves to give hugs. Crosby has the ability to make friends with everyone he meets.

Crosby loves to eat. His favorites are Chick-Fil-A and mac and cheese…but it has to be the circle kind. Crosby plays soccer, but his favorite sports person is Patrick Mahomes. Each owner started as an employee or agent, and after time was able to buy into the business and achieve the American dream of “being your own boss.” Even before they were owners, Vanetta, Chris, and Eli did jobs as if the business was their own.

Vanetta Brelinski moved to Grants Pass in 1970 and started her insurance career in 1977. She worked in several insurance offices in GP until 1985 when she settled in at Siskiyou Insurance. She lives in the country with her husband, Gary, and enjoys gardening, camping, and home projects. She has five kids and six

grandchildren whom she loves to spend time with. She is also involved with her church, Parkway Christian Center, in the preschool wing.

Chris Grider was born and raised in Grants Pass. He came to Siskiyou Insurance in 2000 after a career as a jeweler. For many years, Chris coached and played softball. He is married to Tammi and they have three kids and three grandchildren. Chris participates in the community by going to small business pop-ups in many of the local businesses to bring more awareness to the small business owners in the area.

Eli Gunter was born and raised in Grants Pass, joining Siskiyou Insurance in 2007. Eli lives in the country on a small farm called Raising Arrows Ranch with his wife, Miranda, four kids, three dogs, chickens, and a herd of Nigerian dwarf goats. They attend the local fairs with their goats as often as they can, and make anything possible with goat milk.

Siskiyou Insurance has become a family operation with multi-generations working under one roof. They are very

proud to be able to provide family members with careers as well as their long-time employees and agents. They succeed in providing their staff with a great working environment and the opportunity to advance with a career.

cheers of camaraderie. Teen boys, fueled by energy and enthusiasm, engage in a dynamic dance of passes, shots, and face-paced movement.

Thirteen-year-old Nathan Thompson plays point guard for the South Middle School basketball team. For eight years, he has been practicing while looking up to legends like Kobe Bryant, and learning all he can from his mentors: Coach Rossetta, Trent Thompson, and Nathan Thompson.

Nowadays, he practices in the South Middle School Gym with friends. He says, “The people on my team are the best part.”

Nathan has traveled to Portland for basketball and been involved in the State Championships – which is his favorite memory of basketball so far. But this great athlete hasn’t let it go to his head. His advice to others is “to stay humble.”

Others confirm that he is very kind-hearted and loves teaching. He has little brothers at home who look up to him, so he teaches them the proper way to shoot and guard. He enjoys playing basketball with his dad and older sister in the front yard as well.

His advice for others who are interested in playing basketball is “try your best and have as much fun as you can!”
