On your marks... get set ... go ... MUSCLE MEDICINE, DOUBLE BAY

Welcome to the 'City to Surf' Winter edition of Eastern Suburbs Life.

sporting event, one that is watched all over the world and one that shows off Sydney’s eastern suburbs in all its glory.

Inside this edition there are articles by contributors like Brendan White (where he explains how to handle your payout if you are unfortunate enough to be made redundant), Merren Davies (on Apple’s new noise monitoring watch), and Roy Hopkins-Deacon (on why he is an 'Opal Addict', and why he is happy to help anyone who is looking to start, or grow an opal collection)

A glorious 14km jog, sprint, run, walk or dawdle from Hyde Park to Bondi Beach taking in the delightful scenery of Rushcutters Bay, Double Bay and Rose Bay before the hurt of 'Heart Break Hill', the slog to Dover Heights and the delight of seeing the Pacific Ocean and the downhill trip to Bondi Beach, only to be greeted by a cruel uphill stretch on reaching Campbell Pde.

If you have a writing bug in you, putting your thoughts online is a great way to get started. You can be relaxed that your article will be proof read before it is published, and that it will be automatically submitted to Google for ranking at the same time, meaning that, after a time, it can be found in Google Searches. Once you have published it online you can also share it yourself on Facebook, Google, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Tumblr, Reddit and Digg.

For those wanting a more leisurely way to enjoy their sports it’s great to know that 'The Field' at Easts Rugby now has a newly renovated function and bistro space. It’s a great place to take the kids and to catch up with friends for family occasions.

For bargain hunters we have specials from Australia Beds (45% off Winter sale mattresses), A Style of Shade (20% off selected Luxaflex window fashions), Edgecliff Hearing (FREE hearing check with any ear wax removal) and newcomer Breakthrough Brilliance (Offering a FREE ONE-DAY training for Business Leaders who are looking to improve the performance of their business). All that said, we must not forget that August is the month of Sydney’s most famous

For those wanting a more leisurely way to enjoy their sports it’s great to know that 'The Field' at Easts Rugby now has a newly renovated function space & bistro. It’s a great place to take the kids and to catch up with friends for family occasions, but we’re keeping it a secret in case 'City to Surf' participants take a short detour to 22a O’Sullivan Rd, on their way to Bondi Beach. Oh, and you can watch the rugby from there too! Many thanks to all our readers and contributors.

Apple’s watch app that helps to protect your hearing The noisy modern world can be bad for your ears.

Excessive noise exposure is a major reason that people develop a permanent hearing loss in adulthood. Therefore, Apple has added a noise monitoring feature to their latest Apple Watch. The watch monitors noise through the built-in microphone and alerts the wearer if the noise level is potentially unsafe for their ears. If you want to protect your hearing from noise then follow this advice: 1. If a noise source causes your ears to 'ring', then avoid this noise as the 'ringing' is a sign that the noise may be damaging your hearing.

2. Follow the 60:60 rule when listening to music with headphones. That is, keep below 60% of allowable volume range, and only listen for up to 60 minutes per day. 3. Use hearing protection if noise is unavoidable (e.g., musicians custom ear plugs). If you suspect you have noise damage or 'ringing in the ears', then phone us for an appointment.

How to cure thyroid problems with yoga Yoga is an accessible, low-impact exercise that reduces stress and supports well-being. Could yoga help treat thyroid problems?

The thyroid is a small gland in the throat that secretes hormones. These hormones affect a person's metabolism, body temperature, and growth. They also affect the way a child's brain develops.

Hypothyroidism

This is when thyroid hormone production is too low. A 2016 study found that 6 months of yoga practice helped to improve cholesterol levels and levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). This reduced the need for thyroid replacement therapy in women suffering from hypothyroidism.

Beneficial yoga poses for thyroid issues

The following listed yoga poses focus on stimulating the throat. They are thought to improve circulation, as well as stretch and strengthen the neck where the thyroid is located.

Stress is often associated with thyroid problems. For this reason, yoga may be beneficial for thyroid health. There are a variety of conditions that affect the thyroid. Two of the most common conditions are:

Hyperthyroidism

This is when the thyroid produces an excessive quantity of thyroid hormones.

It is important to only stay in yoga poses for as long as feels comfortable. 1. Supported shoulder stand (pictured) 2. Plow pose 3. Fish pose 4. Bridge pose 5. Cobra pose 6. Boat pose 7. Upward bow pose 8. Supported handstand pose Brigitta Plosz 0450 282 452 www.bphealthandwealth.com.au

RESOURCE THERAPY Would you like to reduce stress and be free of anxiety, fears, phobias and addictions? Call Tatiana 0417 378 018 www.essentialhypnotherapy.com.au

Tatiana is committed to bringing the possibility of change into people's lives. Her passion is to support and guide people through the difficult and unpredictable circumstances of life and the feelings that arise as a result.

As we go through life’s trials and tribulations people generally go for a quick fix, and avoid dealing with issues that block them from achieving their dreams. Most issues stem from emotional feelings that we seek to suppress and avoid facing. These suppressed feelings produce acids and toxins in our body, but when we release them, we unblock energy that starts to flow that releases all manner of physically blocked channels in our body. This is when people report feeling lighter, having a new lease on life, feeling free to have love and experience fulfilment. "A whole person is when our Physical Mental and Emotional is inseparable from our Spiritual Wellbeing", says Tatiana. Tatiana specialises in emotional and physical wellness and can provide help with relationships, anxiety, self esteem, support with trauma issues, PTSD, insomnia, addictions, a range of phobias and fears, including death and dying.

IMPROVE YOUR QUALITY OF LIFE

People are comprised of many parts that are frequently stressed and 'out-of-whack'. This causes us to feel alone, blocked, outof-sorts, tired, and unable to express your own needs. Being stuck prevents people from knowing who they are and creates an inability to move on with their lives. Tatiana uses different therapeutic methods including Resource Therapy, Clinical and Strategic Hypnotherapy, Healing Modalities and Breath Techniques, according to the needs of the client. She has also awakened people from coma, taught a paraplegic client to use her bladder, and helped cancer patients extend their life, by a few years.

8 HOUSE&GARDEN How can you tell the different types of smoke alarms? However, most states and Fire Authorities recommend the use of Photoelectric alarms for compliancy in rental properties.

YOUR FREE NEWSPAPER PROMOTING LOCAL BUSINESSES AND COMMUNITIES

Photoelectric smoke alarms: A clearer picture

Think of it like a laser sensor in a spy movie that will trigger if something breaks its path, but instead of going off from body detection, it reacts to smoke particle detection. This is a preferred smoke alarm type, as it has a clean detection system that doesn’t require the use of radiation to detect smoke particles like an Ionization smoke alarm would.

Ionisation smoke alarms

These alarms are said to ‘smell’ the smoke that comes from flames in that they detect invisible particles of combustion. As opposed to Photoelectric alarms these work though a small amount of radioactive material that exists between two electrically charged plates. This material ionises the air causing a current between the plates. When smoke enters the chamber the flow is disrupted, activating the alarm. While they are not generally recommended over Photoelectric detectors, they do activate more quickly for fast flaming fires. However, they are slower to respond to smouldering fires, which can lead to visibility and breathing difficulties when occupants are attempting to escape a house fire. They are also prone to more false alarms, resulting in people removing the battery and thereby losing all protection.

Photoelectric smoke alarms

These alarms detect visible particles of combustion so it is often said that they ‘see’ smoke. They work by aiming a light source into a sensing chamber so that when smoke particles enter the chamber, light is reflected onto the sensor, triggering the alarm.

sensor within its smoke chamber. When smoke begins to spread within a property, smoke particles will enter the alarm and deflect light from the beam of light positioned within the alarm, interfering with the path of the beam and triggering the smoke alarm when it detects smoke.

How quick it works

The time it takes a Photoelectric smoke alarm to detect smoke in a property has also made the Photoelectric alarm popular. The smoke alarm triggers off the reflection of smoke particles from its light sensor, which is a quicker trigger for the smoke alarm and sound to alert those in a property. Smoke alarms like Ionization alarms require their smoke chamber to absorb enough smoke particles to break a radiation circuit and trigger the alarm. The fact is that in both the real world and controlled instance of smoke alarm testing, they have been proven to be more effective and respond significantly faster to smouldering fires.

you can be alerted, the more precious time you have to get yourself and your family to safety. They are also less likely to emit false alarms from cooking or steam in the bathroom.

These are fires which are slower burning and produce a lot of smoke, the most common type in the home environment. The faster

The way they work

Photoelectric smoke alarms work through a beam of light positioned above a light

Photoelectric smoke alarms will trigger in the earlier stages of smoke build up as it only needs smoke particles to break the laser beam rather than fill up with enough smoke to recognize a smoke situation. Because of its streamlined detection functionality and its ability to detect smoke in its early stages, Photoelectric smoke alarms are recommended.

Rate cuts good news for home buyers The RBA’s decision to cut interest rates will help affordability for home buyers, according to the Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA).

0.9 percentage points and a decrease of 1.0 percentage points over the past year.

"The second cut in as many months is a major boost to housing affordability," REIA President, Adrian Kelly, said.

"Unlike the last series of cuts in 2015 and 2016, which stimulated the housing market through increased investor activity, this cut will stabilise the market".

Subject to the banks passing on the cuts in full this means that for each $100,000 borrowed annual, payments decrease by $500. For a first home buyer, who in the March quarter of 2019 had an average loan size of $338,000 this means a saving of $140 per month. REIA’s Housing Affordability Report for the March quarter 2019 showed that the proportion of income required to meet loan repayments decreased to 30.3 per cent over the quarter, a decrease of

"The two interest rate cuts in consecutive months would see this proportion decrease to 28.6 per cent, the lowest since 2003 and comes at a most opportune time for first home buyers".

"It is first home buyers that that will benefit most with the number of first home buyers decreasing nationally to 8,010 in April with the average for the first four months of 2019 being 8,319, down by 1,100 per month compared to the last four months of 2018," Mr Kelly concluded.

Cooper Park Garage: An icon

There is a lot of talk all of a sudden about iconic cars, and almost all of us do not have one. However, Cooper Park Garage is an icon of its own. It’s the garage in the park that many people in the area already know. The beautiful building made of solid stone with an iron roof (pictured above), totally iconically Australian. Long before it became a garage it was a dairy, then a garage of the old school where you bought petrol and mechanics worked on your car. Cooper Park Garage is managed by Jeff, Clint and Matt, totalling 60 years of experience between them. Matt has worked in Edgecliff Automotive for most of his career as a motor technician. This year we celebrate his 20th anniversary with the company. Speaking of icon, it would be easy to say that Matt is an icon. He certainly is a legend as he was already working at Edgecliff Automotive when Joshua bought it. That story is coming along soon, watch this space (as they say!) In the winter, months your car can come under alot of stress. Joshua and Jeff suggest you have your car serviced, and make sure you get your battery checked, as they can be less efficient in winter. Also check fluids in your car which include wiper fluid and anti-freeze, brakes, transmission and the rubber on your windscreen wipers, tyres and their pressure. If your car was born before the 1980's remember to warm it up before you drive off. If you have a 4-wheel drive and likely to use it off road for playing, especially make sure your systems are all go!

One of the hallmarks of Classic Cars is that they mark the beginning of a new era. That’s easy to spot looking back, but how can you tell earlier on? Josh Thatcher of Edgecliff Automotive, says that the BMW M Series has all the hallmarks. He suggests that the new era started at the turn of the century when 'sustainability' started to become important. That prompted BMW to shift from their traditional V8 engines to the more eco-friendly turbo 6-cylinder. At the same time they made many of the design changes that we now associate with the current BMW image. They 'defined a new class of car' he said and that makes it iconic and a real contender for becoming a classic. The BMW M Series is a sports car that keeps with BMW’s performance traditions. What does the 'M' stand for? It means Motorsport, and that’s part of BMW’s history. Over time the M-badged cars included modifications that made them the specialist group that fulfils this inclusion as a potential classic, they identified the car that we now can recognize the BMW. They had particular exterior modifications, specific trim and many engine modifications. BMW says that overall an 'M' car has to be responsive, and keen on turning as well as accelerating. BMW calls this 'lateral agility'. 'M' vehicles also connect the driver to a car that reacts 'blindingly' fast. There are also several levels of the M-badge letting people choose exactly the features they are looking for. When emission laws changed at the turn of the century and BMW responded by making significant changes to launch the 'M' series. The biggest change was that they stopped pursuing high 'redline' engines and replaced them with turbocharged engines. 'Redline' refers to the fact that 'Rev Counters' had a red line between 5,500 and 7,000 rpm (revs per minute). Crossing the red line was deemed 'dangerous' for the engine. Introducing the turbocharged engine did away with the redline. At that time the Ariel Atom 500 had the highest redline of a piston-engine road car rated at 10,600 rpm. These things and the emphasis that BMW places on supporting the environment are what mark the BMW M Series as a modern classic.

In 1998, BMW built a entirely new environmentally friendly facility in Spartanburg, South Carolina, USA. The Spartanburg plant is "a benchmark in environmentally friendly resource-efficient and sustainable production". It has a program in place that is continually reducing its environmental impact. Energy consumption has been cut by 49.9 %, water consumption has more than halved and landfill has been reduced by 88%. It is placed 4th in the US Environmental Protection Agency’s list of companies using renewable energy. It was also the first automobile manufacturer to achieve the International Organization for Standardization 14001 certificate, renewable every 3 years. BMW has continually maintained their 14001 Certification since 1998. Now, even China is demanding BMW’s luxury cars. The plan is to introduce 21 new BMW models into China in 2019. Interesting to know the Chinese market wants longer cars for more leg room for passengers, and no convertibles because they are not private.

did you know? BMW is a German automobile, motorcycle and engine manufacturing company founded in 1916. The great German car manufacturer is one of the most respected brands in car making history and one of the best-selling luxury automakers in the world. BMW is headquartered in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. • BMW, which stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke, started out by making aircraft engines. • The Dixi was the first car made by BMW. • The BMW headquarters are designed like the BMW engine. • BMW built their own Lamborghini. • There was time when BMW almost became Mercedes in the late fifties. • BMW logo isn’t derived from the spinning propeller but it’s made up of national colours of Bavaria: Blue and white. • The front signature Grille on a BMW is known as kidney grille. • BMW’s first electric car came into existence in 1972. • BMW built world’s fastest motorcycle in 1937. • In the US, BMW cars are referred to as “bimmers” while BMW motorcycles are referred to as “beemers.” • BMW also makes Minis and Rolls Royces. • BMW also design train and aeroplane interiors. • BMW also pioneered bike racing for lunatics. • In 2009, BMW produced approx 1.4 million vehicles.

Making the most of a redundancy payment You get summoned to the boss’s office. The boss’s face is grim. “The company is undergoing a restructure. We’re going to have to let you go…”

"The ETP must be taken as a lump sum," says Brendan, director of BRW Financial Planning. "It can’t be rolled into super but you can make a post-tax or non-concessional contribution to super with all or part of the amount.”

Applying for Centrelink benefits and accessing super

The boss lets you know how much you’ll be getting and thanks you for your service. A short time later, you go to your desk to pack your things in a box.

Having been made redundant, you may now be eligible for Centrelink benefits, subject to a means test and a waiting period.

Whether your redundancy is unexpected or expected (reaching retirement age in a government job, for example), you need to know the financial implications so you can make the most of your payment. “A hefty portion of the redundancy payment can be paid tax-free,” says retirement planning adviser Brendan Whitehouse. “The tax-free limit consists of a base amount and an annual amount for each year of service. The base amount is currently $10,399 and the annual service amount is $5,200.” Any amount over the tax-free limit is treated as an employment termination payment (ETP), which will be taxed at a concessional rate at a maximum of 32% if you are below preservation age, or 17% if you have reached preservation age (60). Unused annual leave and long service leave is also taxed concessionally. If you are aged 65-plus, you are not eligible for a 'genuine redundancy' payment and your entire payout will be treated as an ETP.

You may also be able to access super depending on how it’s classified:

Preserved super: Cannot be accessed until you’ve reached your preservation age.

Restricted non-preserved super: Can be accessed before preservation age, provided you have satisfied a condition of release (e.g. redundancy)

If you’re 60 years and over, any super withdrawn as a lump sum is tax-free. If you’re under 60, the following rates apply:

Age

Unrestricted non-preserved super: Can be accessed at any time

Tax Rate

Under preservation age 22%* Preservation age to 59 First $205,000** at 0% Excess at 15% 60 and over Tax Free *Including Medicare levy

BRW Financial Group 1300 650 574 www.brwfg.com.au

**This is a lifetime limit and is indexed annually. These figures are for the tax year 2018-19

It’s necessary to weigh the advantages of using these funds now against the disadvantages of withdrawing money from a concessionally-taxed environment. The best person to help you make these decisions is a financial adviser skilled in helping clients take optimum advantage of redundancy payments.

$60,000 Why is it that there is so much poetry about Opals? Why did Shakespeare call them “The Queen of Gems”? Why is there an Opal Addicts Facebook Group, and why am I a self-declared Opal Addict? The answer lies in their unique beauty which is totally different from all other gems. They take thousands of years to create and cannot be made artificially. Every gem is individual and the majestic beauty of the colours can be totally spell-binding. My personal journey in Opals began some 40 years ago; after an unsuccessful stint mining for sapphires on the Central Queensland sapphire fields.

I was driving back to visit friends & relatives in SA and I stopped at an )pal shop in Quilpie in Western Queensland to look at their gems. They had recently found some Opalised palm trees which they’d cut and polished; and right there and then I fell in love with the wondrous beauty of Opal.

"Big Blue"

That wonder has never left me, and I am now a self confessed Opal Addict.

Improve your business by becoming a more effective business leader Robert Kirby started his career by working his way through the corporate world negotiating billion dollar contracts in some of America’s largest multinational companies.

By the time he turned 28, he was managing a team of 60 people, and was burnt out, miserable and physically exhausted. This sparked an epiphany which led to the realisation he wasn’t meant to be pounding the corporate treadmill - he was meant to be serving humanity. At 31, he stepped into personal and spiritual development. Training and working as a kinesiologist while studying under some of the world’s most renowned healers, teachers and masters such as Dr John Pierrakos (Founder of Core Energetics), Roger Callahan (Founder of EFT, TFT and Tapping), Dr Valerie Hunt (Author & researcher of the human energy field), John Bradshaw (Author) and Dr Barbara De Angelis (Celebrity relationships consultant, lecturer and author). Robert became fascinated in psychosomatics, and the connection between the mind and body. He trained under the late Dr John

TravNow DISRUPTS THE TOURISM INDUSTRY First we had Apple, Google & Facebook to disrupt the way business was traditionally done, then a whole host more including Airbnb, Uber, Netflix, Spotify, Amazon and more.

Most recently, newcomer TravNow has appeared to disrupt the Travel Industry. With over 1,000,000 hotels worldwide they let travellers book direct, missing out travel agents and, because of their scale, offering great value discounts to members, who can join for as little $US5 per month.

TravNow

Their platform also includes, tourist resorts, plus shopping and dining outlets, all offering significant discounts and, being true disruptors, they have their own app to make things easy and have even embraced Blockchain technology to allow payment by crytocurrency (admittedly with an eye to the future). They are so sure of their competitive advantage that they offer a 110% 'price match' guarantee and, given that their direct competitors include Expedia, Hotels.com and Priceline.com, that’s quite something.

Jukebox Jewkbox!

A Century on Shellac & Vinyl The Sydney Jewish Museum's interactive exhibition called 'Jukebox Jewkbox' takes visitors on a musical journey through the records that changed lives and the technology that made it happen.

A Century on Shellac and Vinyl celebrates the rich history of Jewish contributions to music in Australia and abroad – and music’s influence on Jewish life. Visitors to 'Jukebox Jewkbox', travels through musical history since the 19th century invention of the gramophone and the vinyl record by German Jewish immigrant to the US, Emil Berliner. They can see examples of gramophones and phonographs, and walls of close to 500 record covers and listen to iconic music from throughout the ages from Jewish musicians, composers, music producers and songwriters, at the interactive listening station.

Learn about the unique footprint that Jewish involvement has left on the Australian music scene through stories of some of our homegrown music heroes, including Renee Geyer, Ben Lee, The Potbelleez and Tinpan Orange. Museum curator, Shannon Biederman says "From beloved songs to unknown gems and our own Australian stories, Jukebox Jewkbox! captures a century of music that has both shaped and been shaped by Jewish life. EASTSIDE STORY:

a community station success

With a firm focus on community, Eastside Radio was established over 35 years ago and has a large and loyal following.

"The station was originally formed by a fantastic group of proactive communityminded organisers," says Eastside MD Tony Smythe. Its main aim was to be an independent voice representing the Eastern Suburbs and City of Sydney. Based in Paddington, it can be heard as far west as the Blue Mountains and around the world via online streaming. Every week, a total of 76,000 people tune into Eastside and its social media reaches 15,000-20,000, ensuring the station’s digital footprint is at the forefront of community radio stations worldwide. A volunteer-run organisation – Eastside Radio has 150 volunteers including 100 presenters, it attracts enthusiastic locals as well as students for work experience. "Volunteering gives them the chance to be a part of a forward thinking and progressive media organisation," Smythe explains. Many Eastside presenters and producers are Sydney-based musicians, DJs and artists. Others come from distinguished careers in politics, advertising, journalism,

science and education, all of whom bring their variety of specialist knowledge to the programming as well as devoted listeners.

This is part of what makes Eastside different to other community stations, Smythe explains: "The way we care about our audience and the relationship they develop with our presenters," he elaborates. "The wonderful music that you don’t hear anywhere else." Indeed Eastside features many of the numerous jazz styles – as well as other music varieties including world music, blues, soul, funk, French, Irish, experimental and gypsy. Presenting over 84 shows each week, Eastside is also the only Sydney station that devotes five mornings a week to supporting theatre, dance, film, design, literature, Indigenous, visual and other art forms while every afternoon there’s a focus on issues of concern to the community. So why are community radio stations becoming so popular? "As the world becomes more global and information becomes increasingly overwhelming, people are wanting connection with something local and community spirited," Smythe opines. "A station that cares about its audiences and feels like a family… Come on in! Everybody’s welcome."

Electric vehicle charging station comes to Bondi

Blue

A new electric vehicle charging station at Bondi is heralding in a new beach experience – as you recline on the sand soaking up the UV, your car can be charging on the promenade.

A Free Screening for Plastic Free July Tuesday 30 July

The new facility was launched by Waverley Mayor John Wakefield, who said: “We deliberately put it in a prime spot, or as prime as you can make it.”

Doors Open: 6.15pm Film Starts: 6.30pm

It’s all about “destination charging,” according to Anthony Weinberg, Regional Environment Program Coordinator at Waverley, Woollahra and Randwick Councils. “It’s for people who want to spend a couple of hours somewhere like the beach or shopping centre,” said Mr Weinberg at the launch. The Bondi charging station is one of a network at being rolled out in the eastern suburbs by Waverley, Woollahra and Randwick Councils. Of the three councils, Randwick is the leader in meeting electric vehicle charging needs and Mayor Wakefield said it had more stations than Woollahra and Waverley combined.

But few people could be more passionate than Mayor Wakefield about the benefits of electric vehicles against the backdrop of climate change.

Muscle Medicine is hosting a free community screening of the new film Blue, raising awareness of the damage plastics are causing our oceans

“The debate has been won,” he said. “The population as a whole accepts the notion of climate change.”

RSVP: musclemedicine.com.au/community-event Shop 6, 21 Knox Street, Double Bay

Mayor Wakefield believes the uptake of electric vehicles will be greater than is being currently predicted, saying the forecast of 50% by 2040 was “very conservative.”

WAVERLEY

Council declares war on racist vandals

Waverley Council will install more CCTV cameras at Bondi beach and surrounding areas following a fresh outbreak of racist graffiti. In the latest incident, swastikas and racist slogans such as ‘white power’ were discovered on the sea wall below the Bondi Beach promenade. This follows a similar incident in February, when several swastikas were painted on the same stretch of wall. At the latest full meeting of Council, a motion by Councillor Leon Goltsman urging improved CCTV surveillance of the beach and surrounding area was unanimously carried. The meeting was addressed by a member of the Jewish Board of Deputies, who said the swastika was the ultimate symbol of racial hatred. The meeting was told that the Bondi Beach promenade was currently only covered by a single camera. Officers will now meet with NSW Police, Bondi Ward Councillors, lifeguards and the North Bondi and Bondi Surf Clubs to identify locations for additional cameras.

Junction chaos looms All residents, local businesses, community organisations and school groups are encouraged to showcase your gardens, whether big or small, and share your creativity, hard work and sustainable gardening practices.

Attention residents and commercial users of Rowe Lane, Bondi Junction – due to a massive building project in Oxford St, your road is about to be closed during the day. And a new one-way system will be in place during the restricted hours it’s open to traffic.

The awards aim to recognise community members and groups whose green spaces help to enhance our local environment. Award categories include: - Best Community/School Garden - Best Sustainable Garden - Best Small Garden - Best Large Garden - Best Garden (Overall) There are great prizes to be won! Nominations are open until Fri, Sept 13. More info: www.woollahra.nsw.gov.au

RANDWICK

Randwick to start phasing out 'Roundup'

Glyphosate-based weedkillers such as 'Roundup' are being phased out by Randwick Council as part of a trial of organic alternatives to the controversial herbicide. Councillors voted to trial alternative controls in parks, playgrounds and other public areas despite a report by Ryan Zammit, the council’s Acting Manager Infrastructure Services, which supported continuing use of gyphosates. Mr Zammit’s arguments were based on cost, and he drew his figures from a series of experiments at a council works depot where some patches of weeds were treated with organic substances and others with 'Roundup'. According to his report, to achieve the same result as $4,000 worth of 'Roundup', the council would have to spend $72,000 on a product called 'Slasher'. Price tag for something called 'Imazapyr Arsenal' was put at $181,000. And if council went for 'Pine Oil Weed Blitz', the cost would be a whopping $225,000. The only non-chemical form of weed control, weed steaming, would also be very expensive, according to the report, involving a large capital outlay and operational costs. However, at their latest meeting, councillors decided to put public health before economic considerations. They agreed to trial organic weedkillers, in particular the 'Slasher' product mentioned in Mr Zammit’s report. The meeting heard that 'Slasher' is made from naturally occurring acids found in plant oils and is a non-selective weed killer which works in a similar way to glyphosate. Randwick Mayor, Kathy Neilson said: "Some members of the community are concerned about the use of glyphosate and recent court decisions overseas. We’re proactively responding to that concern through this trial."

Councillors and staff given strict social media guidelines The mega building project at the north end of Oxford St is also bad news for public transport users - truck exit movements from Rowe Lane will need to be under full traffic control, meaning that all traffic movements, including buses entering and exiting the busy Bondi Junction Bus Rail Interchange, will grind to a halt when trucks are turning. And thanks to the same $24 million project, parking spaces are to disappear in nearby Leswell St, between Camp Lane and Grafton St, to aid truck movements. The cause of the chaos is construction of a mixed use, 14-storey building at 362–374 Oxford St. The project includes residential units, serviced apartments, shops, offices and basement parking. Waverley Council approved the special traffic measures at the latest meeting of its Traffic Committee.

Randwick Council is cracking down on inappropriate social media posts by councillors, staff and contractors.

It has ordered that social media posts: • Must be non-political • Must not commit Council to a course of action without prior approval • Must not publish content that has the potential to damage Council • Must not publish material that is obscene, defamatory or threatening That’s just part of the list of social media taboos in a report tabled at the last full council meeting. The document singled out councillors as prime offenders, saying "Councillors should be aware that any social media activity or interaction, whether official or personal, is public, often permanently available, traceable and able to be reproduced elsewhere."
