“IT’S TIME TO COME TO OUR SENSES”

Tonight, in Australia, approximately 3.4 million households will face hunger, with 2 million experiencing severe food insecurity, meaning they may skip meals or reduce food intake due to financial constraints.
Additionally, over 122,000 individuals will be homeless, equating to nearly 50 per 10,000 people.
At the same tim e Bowen’s “Renewables Only” program is destroying the environment to save the environment.
Surely, we should be looki ng after our own needy first. By adding a further 1,200,000 people to our population since coming into government Albanese has added to existing problems and driven up the price of housing making it harder for our own first-time buyers to get started.
Albanese is seen as a co mpassi onate Prime Minister, but his desire to help others is being paid for by existing Australians in higher property and rental prices and increased queues seeking medical care. Given current economic circumstances was this the wisest choice to make?
And while making Aus trali a a “Global Renewable Energy Superpower” is a noble ideal, the demonising of all hydrocarbons at the present moment is unwarranted. The Greens seek to phase out all Coal and Gas by 2035 and the Teals support the ending of gas-fired power generation in NSW, Victoria and South Australia within five years. (Sources: The Greens Website and the Australian September 2024 – This also revealed that the Teals voting support was Liberals 33%, Labour 41% and the Greens 73%)
Let’s put things in perspective. If there was no Coal, Oil or Gas tomorrow there would be no economy and a return life with no transport, heating or cooling. Instead we have blown up power stations earlier than we should and dramatically driven up prices and reduced electricity reliability. All in the last three years of Labor government. Again we see that Albanese’s desire to do the noble thing has created problems for others, just as it did with “The Voice”.
It's time to come to our senses and realise that in his desire to do the right thing and not offend people Albanese consistently creates more problems than he solves. Stop for a mom ent to check and see if you can find one noble intention that his government pursued where the outcome benefited the average Australian family, or man in the street.
Sadly, good intentions are not enough. We need a government that has a plan that is realistic and can be implemented successfully. It is not enough to make people happy by promising a $275 a year reduction in energy prices and then see prices go up by over $1,000. In short, we need a leader we can trust.
One who w ill pri oritise the needs of the average Australian family over global ambitions. We need a government that is prepared to make tough decisions, without losing sight of what truly matters: The wellbeing of the Australian people. Until then, the gap between political intentions and real-world outcomes will continue to widen, leaving the most vulnerable behind and the country with a debt of almost $1,000,000,000,000. That’s about $55,000 per member of the working population, of which the youngest will pay the most as they will be working longest. The fact is that Albanese’s com passion is being paid for by the least well off in our community, and he seems not to know it.
Unfortunately, his b eh aviour traits are now baked into the culture of the Labor party and its reliance on support from the Greens and the Teals, all of whom have unrealistic views on the rate that progress can be made and thereby damage our economy.
Now is the time for a more reali stic government that pursues realist goals, financial prudence and a Fair Go for the average Aussie.
Under Labor we’ve seen a cost-of-living crisis, a housing crisis, a break down in social cohesion, a dramatic increase in the cost of electricity and the cost of living and, an unheard of 5% decline in productivity in just three years. Clearly there’s no instant cure, but we can suggest: -
A. DON’T RISK GIVING THE LABOR-GREENSTEALS ALLIANCE ANOTHER CHANCE.
B. IT’S TIME TO COM E TO OUR SENSES AND VOTE FOR PRACTICAL, ACHIEVABLE GOALS AND TRADITIONAL AUSSIE “FAIR GO” VALUES – IN OTHER WORDS VOTE LIBERAL
Many thanks as always to our advertisers, readers, designers, volunteers, people doing distribution, and others who help. Without you all there would be no paper.
We look forward to seeing you all in May.
Best wishes,

TREE INSPECTION PROGRAM
Woollahra local area is known for their big and beautiful trees, some of which are hundreds of years old. There are more than 16,000 public managed trees throughout the Woollahra Municipality, along the streets and roads and in the parks and reserves.
A team of arborist s regularly inspect public trees to identify symptoms of pests, disease and structural defects to help prolong the life of the urban forest. Information about every inspected tree is recorded on a data base.
When the trees are identified that need some attention, industry standards are applied so the trees are managed with an acceptable level of risk. Large and mature trees on public or private property should be inspected by a qualified arborist about every 18–24 months.
Here are some top tips fo r identifying poor tree health and potential structural defects in your garden, street or in your local park:
Potential characterist ics of a tree in decline can include:
• Unusual discolouration of leaves,
• Reduction in crown density (fewer leaves than normal).
• Excessive production of deadwood (of course make sure the tree isn’t deciduous).
• Following an extreme weather event, have a look at your tree to see if there is anything unusual such as hanging or failed branches or splits or a lean in the trunk which you haven’t noticed before.
If you have concerns about the health of a public tree, you can report it to the Woollahra Council App.
Trees play a crucial role in the cooling and wellbeing of our community and local (tree canopy) environment, which is why Woollahra Council recently adopted a new Urban Forest Strategy, which sets a target of planting 13,410 trees across our local area over the next 25 years.
New trees will be added to the parks, reserves and streets, and we are encouraging community members, schools and businesses to plant more trees on their properties, so we can reach our 30% canopy cover target by 2050, and continue to grow a green and leafy Woollahra that benefits everyone. woollahra.nsw.gov.au/UFS

EASTER REFLECTIONS
THE
As Jesus "breathed His last," the centurion overseeing His execution looked on, deeply moved by the event. He praised God and declared, “Surely this was a righteous man.” This statement from a Roman officer, whose job was to execute criminals, is both unexpected and powerful. Executioners are hardly known for declaring their victim’s innocent, yet this centurion, in the face of Jesus' death, could not deny His righteousness.
The centurion was not alone in his assessment. A criminal, crucified alongside Jesus, also recognized His innocence. The thief rebuked his fellow prisoner, saying, “We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”
Even Pontius Pilate, th e Roman governor who sentenced Jesus to death, acknowledged that Jesus had committed no crime deserving of such a punishment. Pilate repeatedly stated, "I have found no basis for a charge against this man," making it clear that Jesus’ execution was a miscarriage of justice.
Jesus was accused of subverting the nation, opposing taxes, and claiming to be the Messiah, but none of these charges were substantiated.
No armies had been raised, no peace had been disturbed, and certainly no rebellion had been instigated. The motivations behind His crucifixion were more political than legal - Judas’ betrayal for silver, the envy of the religious leaders, and Pilate’s fear of unrest. It was, in every sense, a grave injustice.
But why does Luke emphasize that Jesus died an innocent man? Is the purpose simply to highlight the injustice of His death, drawing parallels to modern cases of wrongful convictions, such as that of Kathleen Folbigg or Lindy Chamberlain?
While these stories elicit strong feelings of indignation, Luke’s portrayal of Jesus’ death has a far deeper significance. The story of Jesus is not simply about a man wrongly convicted; it’s a divine act of salvation. Luke doesn’t present Jesus as a helpless victim, but as a man resolutely fulfilling His purpose. Jesus knew what was coming and, through His prayers in the Garden of Gethsemane, spoke of "the cup" He was to drink, understanding it as His divine mission. His death was not an accident, nor merely the result of human injustice. It was, as foretold in Isaiah 53, a fulfilment of prophecy.
The prophet Isaiah spoke of a suffering servant who "took up our pain and bore our suffering." Jesus, though innocent in the eyes of human law, bore the consequences of human sin. He was "pierced for our transgressions," "crushed for our iniquities,"
and "by His wounds we are healed." His death was not just an innocent man paying for the wrongs of others; it was the righteous King willingly taking the punishment we deserved, offering a way for humanity to be reconciled to God.
Jesus died n ot only on behalf of humanity but in humanity's place. He bore the punishment for sin that we could not bear ourselves. By His death, He established peace between God and man, offering forgiveness and reconciliation. The innocence of Jesus was not a mere tragic detail; it was essential to His role as the Savior. As the apostle Paul writes, "The righteous for the unrighteous, to bring us to God."
Luke’s account of Jesus’ crucifix ion provides a vivid image of divine justice. The innocent exchanged for the guilty, a concept that may seem like a deeper travesty of justice in human terms, yet in God's economy, it is the

ultimate expression of love and grace. Jesus, the King, willingly took on the punishment due to us, offering us peace with God.
Today, as we loo k upon the cross, we are called not to pity Jesus, but to marvel at the depth of His sacrifice, to acknowledge our need for His grace, and to rejoice in the peace His death brought to us.

NSW Ports Grant helps local kids get ‘Fit for Life’

The Police and Youth Citizens Club (PCYC) Eastern Suburbs’ Fit for Life program is helping to drive positive change among young people in the community with the support of NSW Ports’ Community Grants Program.
The Daceyville-based PCYC is one of more than 60 local schools sporting clubs, not-for-profit and community-based organisations to have benefited from a NSW Ports Community Grant over the past five years.
The program offers one-off grants of up to $25,000, for local initiatives, projects and services operating within eligible postcodes in the vicinity of NSW Ports’ sites at Port Botany, Port Kembla and the Enfield and Cooks River Intermodal Terminals.
The PCYC used its g rant to expand its ‘Fit for Life’ program which runs early morning training sessions to connect physical, emotional and social wellbeing with nutrition and life skills, steering young people towards a healthy lifestyle.
“We were able to reach out to local schools to boost engagement as we were able to provide instructors better equipment to train with, as well as breakfast, lunch and snacks twice a week for the young people,” said Tara Coleman, PCYC Eastern Suburbs Manager.
“Last year we ran 124 Fit for Life sessions and a record number of 1,190 participants attending the program. Through promoting our program, we also recruited some great volunteers, many of whom work at the Port.
“I have witnessed positive change in the lives of many of the participants of the program, so to have the support of NSW Ports through the grant scheme is wonderful.”
NSW Ports CEO Marika Calfas said the Community Grants Program supports projects that deliver positive outcomes in local communities across the areas of education, health, economic development, the environment, arts and culture, social welfare and emergency services.
“Our local communities are integral to what we do, and we are really proud to have been able to support so many great initiatives, like the PCYC’s Fit for Life, through our Community Grants Program over the past five years,” Ms Calfas said.
“We’re really loo k ing forward to receiving the applications this year, and I encourage anyone involved in a school or sports club or local community group who has a project or program they need funding for to submit an application.”
Through its ports and intermodal terminals, NSW Ports’ operations contribute $13.6 billion annually to the State’s economy and support around 65,000 jobs through the supply chain – many of them in the local communities these grants are supporting.
To apply for the NSW Port s 2025 Community Grants Program, or for more information, visit: www.nswports.com.au/ grants
Applications cl ose at 5pm on Sunday April 20, 2025.

BEACH POLLUTION

Did you know... every street in Randwick City has stormwater drains? When it rains, the water flows down the street and into the drains. Along the way the water picks up whatever is left on the street and takes it with it. These stormwater drains empty into our beaches, ponds and river systems.
Just as our residents do, Randwick Council takes pride in being a coastal area. Our network of 235km of stormwater pipes can move a staggering 2,800,000,000 litres of stormwater every hour.
That’s the equivalent of 1,120 Olympic-sized swimming pools! Keeping our beaches clean and pristine is a main priority for us. To keep our beaches clean, we need to keep our drains clean.
Our Beach Poll ution Ends Here website takes visitors on a tour down the drain. It explains what pollutes stormwater and where drains go. You can even find drains near your home and find out where they flow to.
If you’re really keen, you can s ymbolically adopt a drain, give it a name and download a certificate of adoption which you can share on social media!
HOW RANDWICK COUNCIL I S IMPROVING WATER QUALITY
1. Gross Pollutant Traps
We’ve installed 35 gross pollutant traps (GPT) in many coastal locations to trap larger items of rubbish that flow via the stormwater drain. They remove about 300 tonnes of pollution each year, preventing it from reaching our beaches and oceans. From that, more than 80% of the pollutants are recycled.
2. Water Recycli ng
We capture about 450 million litres of stormwater, filter it and use it for watering parks and reserves each year. This process prevents polluted water from entering our beaches and saves Council around one million dollars in water costs.
3. Stormwater Dive rsion
We’re working with Sydney water on options for diverting stormwater away from Coogee Beach. In 2013, stormwater was diverted away from Malabar Beach, which led to an improvement in water quality.
4. Cleaning Beaches and streets
Our beaches are groomed daily for rubbish removal. We remove 200 tonnes of rubbish and excess seaweed every year. Our sweeper trucks clean streets picking up about 1,000 tonnes of rubbish a year, which reduces pollution from entering our beaches.

Walkabout with Ruth Pagewood/Eastgardens
Pagewood was originally known as "South Daceyville", before being renamed to "Pagewood" in 1929, to honour the late Alderman Fred Page, the Mayor of Botany Council in 1928. The name "Kingsford" was also considered for Pagewood, but it was rejected and later used as the new name for South Kensington.
Development of Pagewood began in 1919 with an estate called Monash Gardens. The northern part of Pagewood was originally designed to be the southern part of the Daceyville garden suburb, and many park and street layouts in Pagewood remain unchanged from the original Daceyville plans. The southern part of Pagewood was originally named Dudley, and Dudley St remains in southern Pagewood today.
1

I begin my walk at Astrolabe Park which was formally created as a public recreation reserve in 1934. In the 1910s, when Daceyville was initially being constructed, the parklands were a swamp. Astrolabe Park is named after the French ship Astrolabe, which explored Botany Bay in 1788, just a few days after the arrival of the First Fleet.
Astrolabe Park was partly used as a municipal landfill site for the City of Botany Bay beginning in 1938 and continuing intermittently until 1978. The area was also mined for sand throughout the 1950s and 60s.
I head down toward Banks Ave passing Bonnie Doon Golf Club, one of Australia’s most influential golf clubs which began with an assembly of ‘golf mad cranks’ at the home of Marrickville Doctor Charles Adam Patrick in 1897. It is a club with a host of traditions, the third-oldest in Sydney, and rare in that it has existed at three different sites.
3

Further along Wentworth Ave is the suburb of Eastgardens. It was created in 1999 from portions of Pagewood and Hillsdale to house the Westfield Eastgardens shopping centre, which opened in 1987 and was the largest shopping centre in Australia for a short period until Chadstone Shopping Centre in Melbourne was redeveloped. Westfield Eastgardens was built on the site of a former Urban Transit Authority bus depot and the site of General Motors Holden car manufacturing plant and the former National Studios.

EASTGARDENS PAST HISTORY:
1. National Film Studios
Opened in 1935 and for nearly thirty years, Australian and British cinema was produced here.
2. General Motors Holden
Built in 1940, General Motors Holden, operated a car manufacturing plant until 1981.
3. W.D. & H.O. Wills Tobacco
In 1985 Wills combined the separate factory operations in Sydney and in Melbourne into one site at Pagewood, Sydney which took on the name Virginia Park.
4. Westfield Eastgardens shopping centre Opened in 1987.
GUIDING & TEACHING TAROT

I have had 25 years of knowledge and experience with the Tarot Cards. They can help open up hidden information and unlock any problems which can guide you to plan for a positive future. If you have any problems please don't hesitate to phone me on 0414 273 104.
ARIES (Mar 21 - Apr 19)
THE EMPORER is the Tarot Card for Aries. This card shows the Emporer is seated on a cubis throne giving the impression of leadership and worldly powers.
You can somet imes be very strong and stubborn. You are dedicated to your plan and will not accept suggestions of others. You are very good on business levels but can sometimes be impulsive and not go about things in a practical way.
As your symbol is T he Ram try not to headbutt your way to good fortune instead of taking time and having patience. Show your understanding and encourage people with love instead of demands.
This ca rd sug gests security and stability of life. You are on top of things and everything is under your control. It is your hard work and judgement that has brought you this far.
Lucky Gemstone: Diamond
Lucky Numbers: 1 & 11
Lucky Colour: Red
Walking down Banks Ave, I turn right onto Wentworth Ave to Mutch Park, named after Tom D. Mutch (local MP and alderman). The park was the site of "Flagstaff Hill' and was the site of sand mining operations. There is a garden of reflection dedicated to those lives lost due to family and domestic violence.

I head down Maroubra Rd passing the The Pagewood Hotel, built in 1956, formerly known as Pagewood Rex Hotel. The hotel's license was transferred from the old College Green Hotel in Chippendale, reflecting the NSW Government's strategy to move inner-city pub licenses to the suburbs. The hotel was located near the General Motors Holden car manufacturing plant (which operated until 1981) and served many of its workers.

I complete my walk heading down Bunnerong Rd towards Kingsford. Did you know the Bee Gee's lived on the corner of Storey St and Bunnerong Rd? They lived there from 1963-66 when they signed their first recording contract. Unfortunately, the house was demolished, despite its cultural significance and the property wasn’t heritage listed. Sadly, the plaque acknowledging where they lived has also been taken away. It would be great if council could bring back the plaque!
TAURUS (Apr 20 - May 20)
THE HIEROPHANT is the Tarot Card for Taurus. This card shows the Hierophant robed with a crown and repesents levels of wisdom.
You have the capacity of new and fresh insights from old ways. Usuallly you are self employed and are determined to get your own way. You are way ahead in your desires and ideas but have a fear of insecurity when it's time to take risks.
You don't want to mis s a ny opportunities and need to trust your intuition and not always rely on the familiar. Always remember you are
The Bull, powerful and utterly unstoppable. Nothing can bring you down except fear.
Lucky Gemstone: Emerald
Lucky Numbers: 6,12 & 22

WAVERLEY COUNCIL LAUNCHES LANDMARK ANTISEMITISM STRATEGY
Waverley Council is proud to announce the launch of its Strategy to Combat Antisemitism – a first-ofits-kind initiative at the local government level aimed at addressing and preventing antisemitism in the community.
Home to a thr iving Jewish community with a rich history dating back to the earliest days of European settlement in Australia, Waverley has long been enriched by Jewish contributions in arts and culture, business, education, and civic leadership. However, in recent years, there has been a concerning rise in antisemitic incidents, including vandalism, hate speech, and violence.
By launching this strategy, Waverley Council is taking a proactive stance in ensuring that antisemitism is confronted and that all residents can thrive in an environment of mutual respect and social cohesion.
"I am proud to lead a Council which has developed the first ever local government strategy to combat antisemitism in Australia. We have seen an alarming rise in antisemitism which has acutely impacted the Jewish

community within Waverley but also throughout Australia more broadly. Waverley Council has been proactive in leading the development of a comprehensive strategy to fight antisemitism as well as racism and prejudice more broadly," said Cr Will Nemesh, Mayor of Waverley.
Waverley Council recognises that tackling antisemitism requires a coordinated effort across all tiers of government — local, state, and federal. As the level of government closest to the people, local councils have a critical role in fostering inclusive, safe, and connected communities.
This groundbreaking strategy provides a clear, structured approach to combating antisemitism by:
• Strengthening community resilience against hatred and extremism.
• Enhancing public safety measures.
• Promoting education and awareness initiatives.
• Encouraging interfaith and intercultural dialogue.
Partnering with key stakeholders, including community groups, law enforcement, and

government bodies "This strategy is Council’s blueprint for supporting and engaging with our Jewish community, ensuring everyone feels valued, respected and safe. Antisemitism
has no place in our society and this strategy affirms our commitment to combating this form and all forms of racism, bigotry and extremism," the Mayor added.

COUNCIL CRACK DOWN ON SHARE BIKE PROBLEMS
Waverley residents on a daily basis are navigating shared bikes carelessly strewn across footpaths and ridden at dangerous speeds, risking injury and causing fear to pedestrians.
Waverley Council is demanding an end to these unsafe practices and lack of regulation, approving a motion to put in place a Memorandum of Understanding between Council and bike operators for urgent action on the issue.
Share bike trips in Waverley increased 350% between 2021 and 2024, which has exacerbated the problems faced by residents. While share bikes are a State Government responsibility, Councils have the capacity to act on “unattended property” under State Government Guidelines.
Waverley Mayor Cr Will Nemesh said "We are continuously receiving complaints from the community about shared bikes carelessly left on footpaths or ridden at dangerous speeds. Enough is enough.
“This is why I am proposing the establishment of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with bike share providers, requiring operators to take more responsibility for how shared bikes are used and where they are stored.
“Although, this is a State Government policy area, I have made it clear to the operators that if an agreement with Council cannot be
reached within one month, I will take swift and immediate action. Shared micromobility is the way of the future but we must first get the framework set up correctly and ensure community safety comes first."
The proposed MoU will cover the maximum number of bikes permitted, parking, geofencing and bike speeds. It will require operators to cover costs of implementing the MoU, including infrastructure and enforcement.
The Council motion also included a six-month bike share parking trial, starting June 2025, using designated parking areas on footpaths and on-street (where appropriate), focusing on high-traffic areas like Bondi Junction, Bondi Beach and Bronte Beach.
Mayor Nemesh said a comprehensive solution requires both local and State Government action.
“We urge the NSW Government to implement a state-run tender process for bike share services with clear operational controls,” he said.
“We would recommend that a portion of the generated revenue be allocated to local councils for infrastructure and enforcement to allow us to make a difference on the ground.”

Rose Bay Beach clean up
Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped to keep Sydney Harbour beautiful and protect local birds and marine life by removing over 67 kilograms of litter at our Rose Bay Beach Clean Up Australia Day event on Mar 2.
In positive news, some singl e use plastic items such as straws, plates, cutlery and take-away packaging were almost eliminated from our collection this year, and we also saw an ongoing reduction in styrofoam packaging.

Bringing the buzz back to Bondi
My team and I are continuing to promote cultural and artistic events and festivals within Waverley and, in a major new step, we are commencing an Expression of Interest process to host a flagship Bondi Beach New Year’s Eve event. The motion was approved by Council in last week’s meeting. Local community, businesses and visitors have been calling out for more events and activations within Bondi for a long time.
Having successfully staged the Mard i Gras Bondi Beach Dance Party in previous years, Council is confident in its capacity to collaborate effectively with industry to minimise impacts to residents while maximising the fun and bringing back the vibe.
The next steps in fighting antisemitism
I am proud to announce that Waverley Council has endorsed and adopted a Strategy to Combat Antisemitism – a firstof-its-kind initiative at the local government level in Australia aimed at addressing and preventing antisemitism within the community.
We have seen an alarm ing r ise in antisemitism which has acutely impacted the Jewish community within Waverley but also throughout Australia more broadly. This first of its kind strategy provides a clear, structured approach to combating antisemitism, enhancing public safety measures, promoting education and encouraging interfaith and intercultural dialogue.
Social cohesion is essenti al to a vibrant and harmonious multicultural society. I encourage other Councils to develop similar strategies for their local communities.
A new era for Bronte House
Historic Bronte House is treasured by the Waverley community for its picturesque location and rich heritage. We want to make this an accessible space enjoyed by the whole of community and Council will now explore options to make that happen. Ideas so far have included a tea-room and community gallery. We are keen to hear your thoughts on its future.

Long-term street tree planting program
Randwick Council will develop a five-year strategy to expand street tree planting and maintenance from 2026-27, building on the success of the $1.2 million Greening Our City program that saw more than 2,000 trees planted. The strategy, initiated by a Mayoral Minute from Mayor Parker, will prioritise areas with low canopy cover, offer residents a choice of tree species where possible, and focus on mature planting.
Randwick Council advances first Reconciliation Action Plan
Council is moving forward with its first Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) to strengthen ties with the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. Councillors endorsed the draft plan for public exhibition and will seek community feedback during the coming months. The plan focuses on relationships, respect, opportunities, and governance.
Rules tightened for shared e-bike providers
Randwick Council will work with shared e-bike providers to improve safety and keep footpaths clear while awaiting the NSW Government’s response to an inquiry on e-scooters and e-bikes, due this year. Council will require providers to respond and resolve complaints quickly and implement dedicated geofenced parking areas. Additional providers will be discouraged until state regulations are finalised.
Strong opposition to EPA changes that could revive Matraville incinerator plans
Randwick Council has strongly opposed proposed changes by the NSW Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) that could reopen the door for a waste incinerator in Matraville. Mayor Dylan Parker has written to NSW Environment Minister Penny Sharpe expressing Council’s concerns. Council will meet with the EPA and submit formal feedback as well as lobbying for an extension to the consultation period. Local MPs and community groups also oppose the changes, which could allow new incinerator applications despite previous laws prohibiting such projects in Greater Sydney. Community members are encouraged to lodge a submission.
Council backs social cohesion forum
Randwick Council will join Waverley and Woollahra Councils to host a social cohesion forum, committing $5,000 to support the event. The forum aims to strengthen community ties, promote inclusion, and respond to recent antisemitic attacks.
Marjorie O'Neill MP MEMBER FOR COOGEE

Hi everyone, I wanted to talk to you about Harmony Week and how our diversity is a strength we should celebrate. Harmony Week, which took place at the end of March celebrates our cultural diversity, recognises Australians from all backgrounds and encourages a sense of belonging for all.
The Eastern Subur bs is home to many diverse groups and has been influenced and built by many cultures over time. The Bidjigal, Birrabirragal and Gadigal people of the Eora Nation are the Traditional Owners of the land the Eastern Suburbs is on. They have been taking care of the land for over 60,000 years, including at Gooriwal (La Perouse) which is home to the largest functioning community in Sydney and Sydney’s first Aboriginal Reserve. French culture has a lso had a significant influence on our area. Frenchmans Rd is named after Jean-François de Galaup, Comte de La Perouse and their crew who explored the Eastern Suburbs in the 1700’s shortly after the arrival of the first fleet.

The Eastern Subu rbs is now home to people from all over the world, from Jewish people to Chinese people, to people from all over Europe – which is reflected in our many local cultural events and countless different cuisines we can enjoy at local restaurants.
Harmony Week s more than just acknowledging and celebrating diverse cultures – it's also about challenging ourselves every day to stand up to racism.
It is up to eve ryone in our community to be a part of fostering harmony and to build on our Australian values of respect, equality, and freedom.
We are lucky to live in such a diverse community, and it’s something that we should appreciate every day.
