WHAT’S WRONG WITH THE WEATHER?

If you’re fed up with all this rain and blaming it on Climate Change you’re absolutely right. It is Climate Change!

And the climate models predict it will continue for several more years, maybe well into the next decade.

So what caused this sudden change? Well, it seems that the science settled. It’s all to do with the 2022 Hunga Tonga volcanic eruption. It was a cataclysmic event that injected approximately 150 million tonnes of water vapour into the stratosphere. The equivalent of 60,000 Olympic size swimming pools. This is leading to significant and lasting impacts on global and regional climates.

Eastern Australia, due to its geographical proximity, has experienced notable weather anomalies attributed to this eruption. Recent studies suggest that these effects may persist, influencing weather patterns until at least 2035.

CLIMATIC EFFEC TS ON EASTERN AUSTRALIA

The eruption increased moisture content of the stratosphere by about 10% globally and up to 20% in the tropics. This event stands out as the largest injection of water vapor into the stratosphere in the satellite era. Unlike typical volcanic eruptions that emit significant sulphur dioxide leading to surface cooling, this eruption's primary climatic influence stems from the greenhouse properties of water vapour. Here are some of the effects: -

• Temperature Var iat ions

The elevated stratospheric water vapor has contributed to a complex interplay of warming and cooling effects. While water vapor acts as a greenhouse gas, trapping heat and potentially leading to surface warming, the eruption also led to the formation of sulphate aerosols that reflect sunlight, causing cooling. In the Southern Hemisphere, particularly over Eastern Australia, these opposing forces have resulted in nuanced temperature shifts. Some studies indicate a slight cooling effect, with temperature reductions around 0.1°C, attributed to aerosol-induced sunlight reflection.

• Altered Precipitation Patter ns Eastern Australia has experienced increased rainfall and flooding events since the eruption. The infusion of water vapor into the stratosphere may have influenced atmospheric circulation patterns, leading

to wetter conditions. Notably, the summer of 2024 was much wetter than expected, a phenomenon partially attributed to the eruption's lingering effects.

• Ozone Layer Effects

The presence of additional water vapor in the stratosphere can contribute to ozone layer depletion. Indeed, an unusually large ozone hole was observed in 2023, partially attributed to the eruption's effects.

PROJECTIONS THROUGH 2035

Climate models predict that the atmospheric anomalies resulting from the Hunga Tonga eruption will persist for several years:

• Stratospheric Water Vapor: Elevated levels are expected to remain until the end of the decade, gradually descending and dissipating.

• Weather Pattern Disruptions: Eastern Australia may continue to experience atypical weather events, including altered rainfall distribution and temperature fluctuations, as the atmosphere adjusts to the post-eruption conditions.

• Ozone Layer Recovery: The ozone layer's recovery may be delayed due to the eruption-induced water vapor, with potential implications for ultraviolet radiation levels in the region.

CONCLUSION

The Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha’apai eruption has introduced a complex set of climatic variables that continue to influence eastern Australia's weather patterns. Ongoing research and monitoring are essential to fully understand and predict these impacts as the region navigates the remainder of the decade.

So it seems the science is settled, there is indeed climate change. But Hunga Tonga makes it clear that Mother Nature can do more in a few hours than humans can do in years.

Sceptical about the accu racy of the above article? Google Hunga Tonga videos!

Many thanks as always to our a dve rtisers, readers, designers, volunteers, people doing distribution, and others who help. Without you all there would be no paper.

We look forward to seeing you all in June.

Best wishes,

HEARING LOSS from NOISY WORK

In NSW, if a worker's hearing loss is work-related, they may be eligible for free hearing aids. This includes assessments, fitting, and potentially lifetime replacement. Here's an overview of the process:

• The hearing l oss must be directly related to noise exposure at work.

• An audiologist will assess the worker's hearing to determine if they would benefit from hearing aids.

• With assistance, the worker will then make a claim for medical expenses, such as the provision of the hearing aids.

• NSW icare (state-run insurance company) has a schedule of approved hearing aids, with a maximum price, to help ensure quality and affordability.

• In NSW, workers are generally entitled to a lifetime supply of hearing aids, with new devices every five years, and immediate replacements if lost.

Noise-induced hearing loss continues to be one of the most common injuries among workers in industries such as construction, transport, manufacturing, and mining.

Many of these workers are unawa re that they may be entitled to compensation and support through icare — and that your local audiology provider Edgecliff Hearing is here to help.

As an app roved icare provider, Edgecliff Hearing is ready to support and guide you to navigate through the journey of workplace hearing loss claims. Ph 9327 8280 to make an appointment.

DIGNITY, COMFORT AND CARE: SUPPORTING SENIORS TO LIVE WELL AT HOME

Listen closely, can you hear the gentle knock on a front door? The sound of laughter in a familiar kitchen? A cup being placed on a saucer as a warm voice says, “How have you been?”

These are the q uiet, everyday sounds of Holdsworth’s Aged Care at Home services in action. And for many seniors across the Eastern Suburbs and surrounding Sydney suburbs, these sounds signal something deeply important – connection, independence and the ability to continue living in the place they call home.

For over 80 years, Holds worth h as been supporting seniors and their families, adapting to changing needs and focusing on what matters most: personalised, respectful and accessible care. While community spaces like Holdsworth Street and Gaden Centre remain a hub for social connection, for many, the greatest comfort comes from being supported at home.

Holdsworth’s Aged Care at Home services include personal care, domestic

assistance, transport to appointments and companionship. But it’s more than a list of tasks – it’s about building trust, understanding each person’s goals and helping people stay safe, well and engaged in life.

“It’s not just about helping so m eone with a shower or meal,” explains Mel, Holdsworth’s Intake and Engagement Coordinator. “It’s about preserving independence and choice. We ask, ‘What’s important to you?’ and then we tailor the support to make that happen.”

The service is fully app roved by the Australian Government and provides both Home Care Packages (HCP) and Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) options. Holdsworth’s experienced Care Coordinators help guide clients through the My Aged Care system, creating a personalised plan and connecting them with the right support workers – people who truly care.

For families, this means peace of mind. For clients, it means dignity and freedom. As the need for home-based care grows, so too does the importance of trusted, local providers. Holdsworth is proud to serve Central Sydney, the Eastern Suburbs and

A passion for rectifying Damp Houses

Luca Turnbull has now been rectifying damp houses for over half a century.

His passion for damp house restoration, began whilst researching the damp in his family home in 1959. The house situated in Ocean St, Woollahra is a farmhouse built around 1830.

Luca found that the 12 inch thick convi ct hewn sandstone provided an excellent protection against damp. And the thick sandstone also provided excellent insulation qualities and soundproofing.

Luca then moved to Tuscany, Italy, where he studied at the Accademia di Belle Arte, specialising in Roman waterproofing techniques.

After returning to Austra lia i n 1979, Luca started to rectify damp houses. Some projects included; Altona in Point Piper; Palm Beach mansions; houses in the Southern Highlands and Cumberland basin; holiday beach houses on the South coast; apartments and factories around Sydney.

Decades of dam p house rectification has led Luca to develop inventions and new industrial designs. He developed “Clean Sheet” inventions to control damp and cold in houses.

Another of Luca's invent io ns is called the “M.T.101”and is a hybrid room & subfloor

If you or a loved one co uld benefit from aged care support at home – or if you simply would like to learn more – the team at Holdsworth

is ready to help. Because everyone deserves to age with dignity, in the comfort of their own home.

ventilation system. This Australian invention makes conventional subfloor ventilation systems obsolete. The M.T.101 draws cool air at floor level from the house and forces it into the subfloor. This causes all cold and damp subfloor air to be forced out 24 hours a day.

The cool air at floor level i s then replaced by warmer air drawn down from ceiling level. Descending warm air warms up the cold lower walls and floors as well as furniture. Therefore, less energy is required to heat rooms in winter causing cost savings.

The M.T.101 can fit n eat ly in the bottom of a wardrobe or cupboard or in the space under stairways or other little used spaces.

The system is soundproofed a nd uses less power than a mobile telephone charger.

Luca asks clients to check the kilowatt hours on their power bills after installation. The M.T.101 will normally show the kilowatt hours reduced thus saving energy.

These and other energy efficient inventions will make houses more comfortable in the future.

• Houses will be cooler and free of dust with lower power bills.

• Indoor air movement and temperatures will be easily controlled.

Luca's company DAMP specialises in:

• Whisper quiet subfloor vent ilat ion.

• Rising damp solutions.

• Solar powered hot attic ventilation.

• Dusty room filtration with pleated disposable filter media.

• General air filtration fo reduce allergies.

• Wall and ceiling mould control.

• Underfloor & damp basement solutions.

• Computer server cabinet ventilation.

• Home theatre equipment ventilation.

• Wine cellar temperature control.

• Alternatives to damp proofing & damp courses.

Sun, Apr 13

Maroubra RSL sub-Branch held its annual ANZAC Community March led by members of the NSW Mounted Police Force followed by a Commemoration Service at the Cenotaph.

There was a wonderful turnout from the community to support and honour our veterans. We were proud to have the Federal Member for Kingsford Smith Honourable Matt Thistlethwaite and the Mayor of Randwick Councillor Dylan Parker, join us for the march and service.

Maroubra RSL sub-Branch would like to extend heartfelt thanks to all those who made it possible, including our local schools, clubs, supporting military units, community representatives and members of our sub-Branch.

Wed, Apr 16

Maroubra RSL sub-Branch members attended the 2025 civic reception honouring returned servicemen and servicewomen who selflessly served their country, hosted by the Mayor of Randwick Councillor Dylan Parker.

It was also the induction of the class of 2025 Honouring Service. Honouring Service is a Randwick City Council initiative recognising past and present men and women with a connection to Randwick City, who have served our country in armed conflict recognising and honouring them with

street banners flown across Randwick City in the lead up to Anzac Day. Danny Jeffery a member of Maroubra RSL sub-Branch was a proud 2025 inductee.

A fantastic evening was had by all with Maroubra RSL sub-Branch President Frank Brown delivering a resounding address and reciting the Ode.

Fri, Apr 25

In 2025, Australia commemorated a major milestone, the 110th anniversary of Anzac Day. Apr 25 is one of Australia’s most important national occasions. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during WW1. The soldiers in those forces quickly became known as ANZACS, and the pride they took in that name endures to this day.

Anzac day is a day of national remembrance which takes two forms. Commemorative services are held across the nation at dawn – the time of the original landing, while later in the day, former servicemen and servicewomen meet to take part in marches through the country’s major cities and in many smaller centres.

Anzac Day is a time at which Australians reflect on the many different meanings of war and pay respect and honour to all those who have served our Nation.

Walkabout with Ruth Botany - Part 1

Botany Bay is where Lieutenant James Cook first landed on April 29, 1770, when navigating his way up the east-coast of Australia on his ship, the Endeavour. The ship's English naturalist Joseph Banks and Swedish botanist Daniel Solander spent several days on shore collecting vast numbers of previously unknown specimen. Cook's journals first referred to the bay as Sting Rays' Harbour, then later Botanist Bay and finally both these names were crossed out and replaced with Botany Bay. The suburb name comes from the bay it stands on.

I begin my walk at Lord St at the Anglican church of St Matthew, which was the first church in Botany. Simeon Lord allowed the new church to use his mill for Sunday school. The original church was erected in 1841 and a new church replaced it in 1862 and is amongst the oldest in the country.

2

Further along Botany Rd is Gracepoint Church which was established as a church on Dec 1, 1932, and became Randwick Baptist Church in May 1933. Over the years, there have been many changes to the worship style, practices and structures of the church. In 2002, the church changed its name to Gracepoint Christian Church.

Across Botany Rd is Botany Public School which has the honour of not only being the first public school in Sydney, but is also the oldest existing public school in NSW. It became known as Botany Public School around 1862. 3

Heading down Bay St, I stop at Booralee Park at the Botany War Memorial. The monument was originally erected to commemorate those from the municipality who died in service or were killed in action during World War One. A plaque was added at a later date to commemorate those who died in service or were killed in action during World War Two and subsequent wars.

The foundation stone for the memorial was laid on the Dec 16, 1922.

I head back down Bay St and turn into through Nilsson Lane to Banksia St. Here an unofficial post office was opened in Botany in 1881, as the area maintained a small population throughout the 1880s. This building was the first purpose-built post office for Botany, and it is claimed as the 7 1 first NSW post office built to Commonwealth architects' designs. The date of construction for the current building has variously been attributed to 1917 and 1923.

Further along Botany Rd is the Waterworks Hotel, which was named after the nearby Sydney Waterworks, and was established in 1858. The pub was opened by Irish couple, William and Maria Wolloghan, in Sept 1869. A native of County Wicklow, Ireland, William came to NSW as a teenager in the early 1840s with his parents before gaining employment with the Hunter River Steamship Company.

He married Maria D evitt i n 1861, and together they built their Botany pub, where they would bring-up five children. The Wolloghans ran the pub for 15 years before the couple took-up storekeeping in Botany. 5

Next door is The Captain Cook Hotel, built by Oscar William Nilson, est. 1858. The current building was erected in 1906, and was purchased by Tooth in July 1899. The hotel is known for its architectural details, including a slate roof, brick walls, and sandstone coping.

8

Across the road in Banksia St is the Botany Fire + Rescue station. In 1905, a Voluntary Fire Brigade was established at Station No. 35. A new station in Banksia Street was erected in 1906, and the first permanent staff were appointed in 1912. The building is heritage listed and is Arts & Crafts Style.

Just around the corner on Botany Rd is the Botany Town Hall, designed by Byera Hadley, and was opened by the governor, Lord Beauchamp, July 15, 1899. The town hall remained the seat and primary meeting-place of the council until amalgamation in 2016. The council became the "Municipality of Botany" from 1906 to May 11, 1996, when it was proclaimed a city as the "City of Botany Bay" by the Governor of NSW, Gordon Samuels at Sir Joseph Banks Park in Botany. The council wards were abolished from Jan 31, 1908. Under the Local Government (Areas) Act 1948, the Municipality of Mascot (formerly North Botany), which was located immediately to the North, was amalgamated into Botany.

RECENT UPGRADES IN WAVERLEY LGA

Waverley Council has been busy upgrading the LGA. Council is always striving to better the community by improving facilities and infrastructure, and they thank you for your continued patience and support as they progress with these jobs. The following are a few of the major projects they have completed and begun recently.

The Dover He ights section of the Eastern Reserve clifftop boardwalk is now open for business. This upgrade forms part of a larger project to improve the safety and usability of the clifftop walking trail, ensuring the community’s access to our clifftop parks with spectacular views is maintained for generations to come.

Upgrades include i mproved viewing platforms, stairs, balustrades and handrails, upgraded seating on viewing platforms, main entry upgrades, new fencing, and stormwater upgrades.

Following extreme coastal weather and natural erosion in April 2024, a cliff collapse occurred below Marks Park on the Bondi coastal walk, taking some of the walkway with it. Reconstruction works are well under-

way and expected to take several months to safely complete, weather permitting. Work will be done in two stages, the first being stabalisation of the cliff face, which is currently underway.

Waverley Cou ncil thanks the community for its patience as they undertake this dangerous and complicated work along a highly exposed and difficult to access area of our coastline.

As of March this year, Scott Street Reserve Playspace is closed for upgrade works, which will include the installation of play equipment, softfall grounding for safe play, and new furniture. The upgrade will also include landscaping with the addition of lovely new plants.

Weather permit ting, these works are expected to be completed by the end of April.

Repairs are underway on the coastal walk beneath Marks Park Scott Street Reserve playspace
