“Who can help us best?”

With the prospect of an election on the horizon it’s time to stretch our brain power and start weighing up who is most likely get us out of the pickle we are in. We’ve kept choice between Labor and the Coalition because they’re the only parties that can actually make things happen.

Back in 1992, Bill Clinton’s ca m paign strategist James Carville came up with the famous phrase: “It’s the economy, stupid.” It was a reminder that no matter what else is happening, if people are struggling financially, nothing else matters.

So here are six prio rities with notes about how each party is likely to approach them. There’s no right or wrong, just a framework to help you make a choice.

1. LOWER ENERGY PRICES

Power bills are a killer. Electricity and gas prices have skyrocketed, and while the shift to renewables is essential, it’s been chaotic. Households and businesses need relief now. Who can fix it? Labor is investing big in renewables, which will help long-term, but the transition has been messy, leading to price spikes. The Coalition argues for a more balanced mix, including gas and nuclear.

2. BUILD MORE HOMES, FASTER

Rents are through the roof, and buying a home feels impossible for many. The core problem? Not enough houses. Planning red tape, slow approvals, and land shortages all make it worse.

Who can fix it? Labor has committed to building social and affordable housing, but that only helps a small slice of the market. The Coalition wants to encourage more private sector investment in housing. The reality? Both parties need to supercharge housing supply by streamlining approvals, unlocking land, and incentivising investment.

3. CRACK DOWN ON SU PERMARKET & BIG BUSINESS PRICE GOUGING

Let’s be real – Grocery prices have increased dramatically and there’s indication that process will come down soon. Fuel prices also rise suspiciously fast when oil prices go up but take forever to drop when oil prices fall. Excise is about a third of the cost and electric vehicles pay no excise at all, but do more damage to the roads.

Who can fix it? Labor has started looking into competition reforms, but action has been slow. The Coalition typically avoids heavy regulation, favouring marketdriven solutions.

4. GIVE TAX RELIEF WHERE IT’S NEEDED MOST If people had more money in their pockets, they’d feel the squeeze a little less.

In truth the whole taxation structure needs an overhaul, but both parties have shied away from the task.

Who can fix it? The Coalition is usually pro-tax cuts, but their policies often lean towards business and higher earners. Labor’s approach has been to focus on middle- and lower-income households.

5. REDUCE GOVERNMENT WASTE TO EASE INFLATION

Inflation isn’t just about global markets — it’s also fuelled by government spending. While funding for essential services is crucial, wasteful spending adds pressure to the economy and pushes prices higher. Who can fix it? The Coalition traditionally runs on a platform of cutting spending, but their track record isn’t perfect. Labor invests heavily in services, but sometimes at the cost of efficiency. The best approach? Invest in what matters, cut waste, and don’t pump unnecessary money into an already overheated economy.

6. MAKE CHILDCARE & HEALTHCARE MORE AFFORDABLE

For families, childcare is ridiculously expensive. Healthcare costs are also creeping up, with out-of-pocket expenses making life harder. Making these services more affordable would take serious pressure off household budgets.

Who can fix it? Labor has already expanded childcare subsidies and is investing more in Medicare. The Coalition tends to favour private sector solutions, which can drive competition but may not help lower-income families enough. A better approach? Give some of the childcare subsidies to Mums who stay at home to raise their own children. It seems to work ok in Hungary.

So there we have it. Six of the most pressing problems to be solved, and no way of dodging the fact that we must make a decision. However, if we can solve these six we’ll be well on the way to solving many of the others, all we have to do is put on our thinking caps and decide.

As always, we thank all the people who make this paper possible including readers, advertisers, printers, designers, proof-readers and the many people who help informally.

In Roman times Feb was the end of the year, and March the beginning of the new year, but as we’re in Australia we’ll look forward to seeing you in Autumn.

Best wishes,

Woollahra Council's pick of swimming spots

Some of the most magical swimming days are in Summer. The weather can get quite warm over the summer months and the cool water provides the best relief from the heat.

SPRING I NTO MURRAY ROSE POOL

The scenery around Murray Rose Pool and surrounding Blackburn Gardens is simply breathtaking and a swim in these waters is rejuvenating. This spot can get popular so take advantage of the quieter times and score yourself prime property on the sand, just footsteps away from the water.

Murray Rose Pool is a harb oursi de tidal enclosure with two floating pontoons. The kids (and grownups) can spend all day swimming up to the pontoons and leaping into the water. There is also a wrap-around boardwalk, which provides easy access into the pool.

WATSONS BAY BATHS

It's easy to spend a whole day at Watsons Bay — visiting the Gap, Robertson Park, browsing through the shops and enjoying a picnic lunch of fish 'n chips on the grass. If the weather is on the warmer side,

taking dip in the Baths is a must-do. Watsons Bay baths is a fully accessible harbourside tidal enclosure that is popular with all age groups. The baths consist of two floating turning board/sunbathing pontoons, a boardwalk and seating with great views of Sydney Harbour. The baths also have Australia's first deep water wheelchair access to a tidal harbour pool.

CAMP COVE BEACH

Camp Cove Beach must be every local's favourite beach and swimming spot. This stretch of pristine sand is nestled adjacent to Sydney Harbour National Park close to Watson’s Bay. It offers perfect paddling conditions for young kids as the water is usually calm with small ripples. The harbour views above th e water are beautiful, but it’s the marine life beneath the surface that is truly fascinating. Bring along a snorkel and goggles and explore the rocks to spot a variety of different fish and critters. You could see an octopus,

Trail, which meanders along the coast towardsthe red-and-white striped Hornby Lighthouse.

PARSLEY BAY

Parsley Bay Reserve offers the trifecta of Summer perfection — we’re talking swimming beach, fabulous playground and perfect-for-picnics grass. It’s one of those spots that you can arrive for an early morning dip in the still waters and stay until dinner time.

provides a gorgeous vista across the

and a birds-eye view of swimmers and snorkelers in the water below.

Parsley Bay has a fascinating history which goes back hundreds of years ago.

FAMILIES FEELING THE PINCH: They deserve better

This summer, conversations at the family BBQ weren’t as carefree as they should have been. Local families and households are grappling with the harsh realities of life under the Albanese Labor Government.

Mortgage repayments, energy bills, and everyday expenses have skyrocketed, leaving many worried about making ends meet.

Labor’s promises of economic relief have proven empty. The Prime Minister pledged cheaper mortgages, yet the typical Australian household now faces an additional $50,000 in interest repayments since the last election. This has hit our community hard, with the dream of home ownership or even holding onto a family home is slipping away for many.

Adding to the strain is the dramatic rise in energy bills. Labor promised a $275 reduction in household energy costs by 2025, but instead, we’ve seen bills soar to unprecedented levels. It’s a stark reminder of how poor planning and policy missteps is hurting everyday Australians.

It’s not just mortgages and power bills. The cost of groceries, petrol, and insurance has climbed by more than 10%. As we start the New Year, families are counting every dollar while juggling rising rents, school costs, credit card debt, and hardship calls to charities have surged.

The impact isn’t confined to households. Wentworth’s vibrant small business

What started out as a ‘creative outlet’ and something ‘fun to do’ during COVID-19 soon became a booming business for Double Bay resident, Nicole Voyatzis.

It was during a walk with her dog, Baby, that the idea for a pet clothing and accessories brand emerged. Nicole says she loved to dress her dog up and, after months of being approached by fellow dog walkers, the idea of NicoleandBaby was born.

“People kept asking me where I got the accessories from and where they could buy them”.

After scouring pet stores for similar tems, Nicole says there was a clear gap in the market: “No-one else was doing it”.

After much planning and research, she created a website and Instagram account, featuring Baby. It wasn’t long after this that she caught the attention of British Vogue magazine, something which created a ‘snowball effect’ for her brand.

Fast forward to 2025 and NicoleandBaby is thriving business, with triple-digit growth in the last 12 months from both her online business and shop-front.

Her business is truly international, with sales into the US, Canada, South America, Japan, Sweden and Dubai.

The Double Bay store boasts a luxurious fit out; selling designer dog wear and an array of pet grooming services:

community — the backbone of our local economy— is also struggling — with insolvencies at record highs. Labor’s inflationary spending is a major factor, pushing more businesses to the brink and forcing families to make heartbreaking sacrifices.

The Albanese Labor Government and the Teals have shown us that they can’t deliver solutions to these problems — only a Liberal Government can get things back on track.

You deserve better. As your Liberal candidate, I’m committed to real solutions for the issues that matter most:

• FIGHTING INFLATION: We’ll rein in wasteful government spending and work to stabilise interest rates.

• HOUSING AFFORDABILITY: The Liberals will prioritise policies that help families secure and keep their homes.

• SUPPORTING SMALL BUSINESS: By cutting red tape and backing entrepreneurs, we can ensure Wentworth’s businesses thrive.

You deserve a government that understands the pressures that you are facing and takes decisive action to address them. It’s time to end Labor’s cost-of-living spiral and restore confidence in our community’s future.

I’m here to listen, advocate, and deliver real change. Together, let’s get our community –and Australia – back on track.

Ro Knox

de-shedding ($35), teeth cleaning ($21), a pawdicure ($25) a bath & blow starting at $60. Like to spoil your pooch? There’s even a country retreat in the Blue Mountains for $115 per night.

There are also dog walking services, wellness products in the works and a compression blanket that Nicole’s developed for dogs with anxiety.

It doesn’t end there. Nicole’s determined to grow her business to capture the growing

phenomenon of social clubs: “What I noticed was that there were people a similar age to me that were treating their dogs as family members and (who) want to spend their time together on weekends. They’ve connected with other dog owners and it’s nice to see that collaboration’.

“I want to build a community of like-minded pet owners. We’ve hosted a glamour pup walk in Centennial Park. Everything we do has a charity element and people would

donate. We partner with RSPCA and 10% of sales go to the RSPCA”.

Over coffee, Nicole seems laid-back and relaxed but the pet business is as cutthroat as any; She’s faced her fair share of copycats and people trying to replicate her content.

Nicole’s admits she’s “planning for the future” something which is second-nature, thanks to her Masters degree in Luxury Fashion and Business Management.

“If you don’t grow your business, your business does not grow” and She admits to working “from the moment you get up’’. So, what’s next for NicoleandBaby? Watch this space for puppy yoga, more social clubs and dog cafes.

WE MUST NOT TURN A BLIND EYE

From an article written by Rev Dr Michael Jensen in December 2024 for parishioners and then shared more broadly by others in January 2025

Dear Friends,

Not a few hundred metres from where we worship at St Mark's in complete freedom, our Jewish neighbours worship behind security guards and high fences.

This has been true for years. I don't know if you've noticed the disparity before. But in recent weeks, following the bombing of the synagogue in Melbourne and the two very nasty antisemitic incidents in Woollahra, that difference of experience of worship has been struck home to me.

Sadly, when I've talked to Jewish leaders, though they are deeply disturbed, they also know that this is nothing new. This has been the Jewish experience for generations. They've learnt not always to trust governments and politicians, on the left and the right, to protect them.

Politicians that speak m ost lo udly about equality, rights, and freedom, seem not to include the equality, rights, and freedoms of Jewish people.

What we are seeing is a resurgence of violent acts against Jewish property as a deliberate attempt to intimidate the Jewish community.

This is a moment when we, as their neighbours, must not turn a blind eye.

I know many of us don't want to buy into the complexity of the crisis in the Middle East or to forget the plight of those suffering in Gaza. Jewish people themselves have a range of views on the conflict.

But you don't have to hav side' in that war to be able to say a loud 'No' to what we are seeing unfold on our streets. I think this has been one of the insidious things about this episode for me — for fear of taking a side in a very, very complex international situation, I've been muted about antisemitism in my own country.

WHAT CAN WE DO?

First, pray that these attacks would stop and that our neighbours would be able to worship in peace. Pray that the perpetrators would be brought to justice and pray that our governments would take a strong stance against these acts. Pray for the friends and colleagues that you know who might be feeling afraid at this time.

Secondly, reach out to neighbours, and colleagues and let them know that you are praying for them. Let them know that you are standing alongside them. An email, a phone call, a text, a quiet word in passing — any of these. I know many of us did this after Oct 7 and I know how much it was appreciated.

continue to contact our politicians to support them in taking a strong stance against antisemitism in Australia and to urge them to be strong where they are weak or mealy-mouthed about this.

When travelling with essential items like prescription glasses or hearing aids, it pays to prepare for the unexpected.

When it comes to hearing aids, there are consumables that may need changing mid-holiday, such as domes, wax guards or batteries. Make sure you pack spare consumable items. Many hearing aids and cochlear implant speech processors are powered by rechargeable lithium batteries and have chargers. Don’t forget to pack your charger, and an international power adaptor is a must. One adaptor and a power board to charge all your electrical gear is recommended.

If you are concerned about th e tim ing of flights or flight delays, then take spare batteries or your charger with your on-board luggage. For rechargeable devices, your seat on the plane will ideally have an electrical outlet for charging. This can be confirmed by searching online if you

Travelling well with Hearing Aids

know your seat details, or by contacting the airline directly.

Hearing the entertainm ent system can be difficult if you rely on hearing devices.

Over-the-ear noise cancel ling headphones can work. Streaming the audio via a remote accessory (such as a Multi-mic) to your hearing devices is another option. Many people opt to download movies or audio-books onto a personal device, such as a phone or iPad, and wirelessly stream the audio to their hearing devices.

Travel insurance for loss and dam ag e of your hearing devices will typically require specifically itemising them with your travel insurer. To further protect your devices, keep any packed items in a watertight bag ― just in case a toiletry bottle leaks in your luggage. Travelling with a back-up hearing aid or cochlear implant speech processor is always an excellent idea. Happy travels from the team at Edgecliff Hearing! Phone 9327 8280.

R&R + BINGEWORTHY TIPS

Is anyone else feeling exhausted after the holiday period? I know I am! The last year has been a whirlwind, and lately, I've been indulging in some much-needed rest and relaxation, including beauty treatments and binge-watching some fantastic television. With streaming platforms booming, it's truly the golden age of TV, and I often get asked for recommendations so I thought I’d focus on them for this month’s piece.

My watchlist has been packed with incredible sci-fi shows from AppleTV, like Silo Severance, Dark Matter and Invasion. Netflix's Squid Game returned with an even more thrilling season 2, which was a must-see. I also can't forget about the best reality show I've ever watched on Prime Video for, Mr Beast - Beast Games."

And of course on Prime, there's the muchanticipated The Rings of Power, a spinoff of The Lord of the Rings. In honesty, it took me a few episodes to get hooked, but once I was in, I was all but whispering “my precious” and I ended up on my own Hobbit’s journey which led me to the premiere of The Lord of the Rings Musical tale at our stunning State Theatre, which was an unforgettable experience.

At the premiere I debuted my new blonde look which my industry friends absolutely loved. It’s been well over a decade since I’ve been blonde and it really is true — Blondes do have more fun. Everyone was calling me Marilyn thanks to the fabulous Laura at Let’s Style It who did my hair and makeup for the night.

Nawaaar at FaceFX in Double Bay. These treatments left me feeling rejuvenated and ready to tackle the new year, especially after such a long and exhausting one. With all these great shows and a refreshed look, I’m excited for what’s to come!

THE IMPORTANCE OF HAVING A WILL

A Will is a legal document which specifies how a person’s (known as the Testator) assets and liabilities are to be dealt with upon their demise.

Many people postpon e signing a Will, due to the misconception that it is something to address later in life. Creating a Will is a critical step in ensuring that your wishes are respected, your loved ones are cared for, and unnecessary expensive legal disputes with family members are avoided.

If you do not have a Will, it is i mperative that you see a Solicitor who Will guide you through the process and ensure that you have a Will which correctly reflects your wishes as to what transpires upon your demise.

WHY YOU NEED A WILL

The Will records who you appoint as the Executor of your Estate, to give effect to your wishes detailed in your Will. The Appointment of the Executor, to act on your behalf, will be confirmed by the Supreme Court of NSW. It is therefore vital that you appoint someone to this position, that you trust implicitly.

The executor’s duties in clude paying debts, filing taxes, and distributing assets according to the terms of your Will.

For Parents, a Will is essentia l for appointing a guardian to care for their minor children. If you do not name a guardian, the court Will

ensure your children are cared for by some-one you trust.

TYPES OF WILLS

There are several types of Wills to suit different needs:

1. The first Will is the most common type of Will, used to outline basic wishes regarding the appointment of an Executor, distribution of assets, guardianship, and funeral arrangements.

2. Testamentary Trust Will: This type of Will includes provisions for establishing a trust, which can be useful for managing assets for beneficiaries who are minors or individuals with special needs.

3. Joint Will: Often used by spouses, a joint Will serves as a single document for two people. However, it becomes irrevocable upon the death of one spouse, which is restrictive and not recommended.

HOW TO CREATE A WILL

Creating a Will with the right guidance will ensure that your wishes are implemented and that your assets are distributed according to the Will, so before you consult your Solicitor consider the following:

1. Decided who you wish to appoint as the Executor. You may appoint more than one but it is not advisable to appoint more than three. If more than one then stipulate that the Executors must act together.

2. Decided how your assets are to be distributed.

3. Name the Guard ian/s for your minor children.

4. Consult your Solicito r an d provided him with instructions as to what you have decided to list in your Will.

5. Your Solicitor Will provide you with a Draft for review and once you are satisfied that your wishes are correctly recorded make arrangements with your solicitor to sign the Will. If the Will is not correctly signed it may be invalid so ensure that you have the Solicitor supervise the signature UPDATING YOUR WILL

Regularly reviewing and revising your Will ensures it remains aligned with your current circumstances and wishes.

CONCLUSION

A Will is more than just a document; it is a powerful tool for safeguarding your legacy and providing peace of mind to your loved ones.

CONSIDERATION

Consideration should also be given to entering into an Enduring Power of Attorney and an Enduring Guardian, which will be dealt with in the next article.

ZODE KINESIOLOGY HAS YOUR ANSWERS

Do you struggle with anxiety, being overwhelmed, or feeling stuck? Would you love to be guided back to your heart and live with joy?

Zoe holds a safe, n urt uring space, translating your body’s wisdom to uncover the root cause of your stress and patterns. She helps you release these core beliefs so you can move forward to happiness.

We all have patterns, reacting to triggers, feeling trapped in cycles of stress, fear, anger, or sadness. These big emotions bring resistance, and instead of facing them, we distract ourselves — keeping busy, blaming others, or indulging in habits that suppress our truth. But emotions don’t disappear; they build up, creating resentment and disconnecting us from ourselves.

Sounds fam iliar?

At Zode Kinesiol og y, Zoe works with those who have been avoiding their emotions, helping them step fully into the life they desire. She supports you in embracing your brilliance, unlocking joy that radiates into your career, family, and communication.

We currently have n ea rly 30 With One Voice choirs located across almost all capital — cities, major regional areas, and in rural Australia too. The choirs are led by professional conductors and meet weekly, followed by supper. Our choirs are always ready to welcome new members — you are warmly invited to share songs and supper with your local choir!

This is where true hea ling happens. It’s where magic and playfulness return because healing doesn’t have to be heavy — it can be full of light, laughter, and flow.

Community Collaboration is the future of business

Someone else already has your customer, but instead of viewing them as competition, what if you saw them as an opportunity? Community collaboration is transforming the way businesses grow, not just by driving sales but by creating experiences that customers can’t resist.

Take the exa mple of Paddo Pets, a local pet grooming business that could partner withnearby businesses to create an all-inone experience for their shared customers. While your furry friend gets pampered, you can head across the street to get your own hair done, and why not finish with a leisurely lunch at the restaurant nearby? This isn’t just convenience; it’s a thoughtful, connected experience that makes life easier for customers while boosting sales and visibility for all three businesses.

Or consider l ocal gallery Wanderlust Prints partnering with an interior designer to create a dream space for a client. Together, they deliver a unique combination of tailored design and custom artwork that transformsa house into a home.

Similarly, imag ine a personal trainer who suggests private Chef Luca to come to your home and prepare a special dinner for a relative’s birthday. Not only does the trainer help you feel your best, but they also connect you with someone who takes the stress out of preparing both the food and the house, creating a celebration that’s truly unforgettable but easier.

When I speak to b usiness owners from the stage, I often encourage them to look at their competitors as potential collaborators. By working together, they can pool resources, share audiences, and create customer experiences that build loyalty and drive growth.

These collaborations create opportunities to surprise and delight customers in ways that no single business could achieve alone. The beauty of community collaboration is that it strengthens trust, builds loyalty, and fosters growth for everyone involved.

Customers aren’t just making purchases — they’re building relationships with businesses that genuinely care about their experience.

The next time you think about g rowing your business, consider who you could collaborate with in your community. By teaming up, you can create something

Collaborative Marketing: A strategy for uncertain times

Unlike traditional marketing, which often involves businesses competing for the same market share, collaborative marketing fosters synergy, allowing businesses to reach new audiences, share costs, and enhance credibility. It is a particularly effective approach in times of economic uncertainty when cost-effective and highimpact strategies are needed.

THE BENEFITS OF COLLABORATIVE MARKETING

1. Cost Efficiency: Marketing can be expensive, particularly for small businesses with limited budgets. By pooling resources, businesses can reduce advertising and promotional costs while still reaching a wider audience.

2. Expanded Reach and Audience Growth: Partnering with another business allows both parties to tap into each other’s customer base, leading to increased exposure and potential new customers.

3. Stronger Brand Credibility: When businesses collaborate, they lend credibility to each other. If a trusted

brand endorses another company’s product or service, it boosts consumer confidence and trust.

4. Enhanced Innovation: Partnerships can spark new ideas and creative solutions, leading to the development of unique marketing campaigns or innovative product offerings.

5. Resilience Against Economic Challenges: In an uncertain economic climate with tariffs and trade restrictions impacting business operations, collaboration allows businesses to support one another, share market insights, and navigate challenges together.

HOW COLLABORATIVE MARKETING WORKS

The success of collaborative marketing lies in selecting the right partners and aligning marketing goals. Here’s how businesses can implement it effectively:

1. Identify Complementary Partners: Businesses should seek partners that share a similar target audience but are not direct competitors. For instance, a boutique winery could collaborate with a local cheese producer for a joint tasting event.

2. Define Clear Objectives: Both parties must outline their goals, whether it’s brand exposure, increased sales, or market

bigger and better than any of you could achieve on your own.

Collaboratio n is the ultimate growth hack. It’s not about giving up your edge; it’s about sharpening it alongside others. When businesses work together, the whole community thrives — and so does your business. The secret to increased sales might just be a handshake away.

Therese Tarlinton Speaker, Author, Advisor www.theresetarlinton.com

Building partnerships that drive business growth

expansion. A clear, mutually beneficial plan is crucial.

3. Develop a Shared Marketing Strategy: The collaboration could take the form of co-branded advertising, shared social media promotions, bundled product deals, or even co-hosted events.

4. Monitor and Evaluate Success: Like any marketing effort, collaborative campaigns should be tracked to measure their effectiveness and make necessary adjustments.

EXAMPLES OF COLLABORATIVE MARKETING IN AUSTRALIA

• Brewers and Cafés: Many craft breweries partner with local cafés or bakeries to create exclusive beer flavours using ingredients from both businesses, cross promoting their brands in the process.

• Tourism and Retail: Regional tourism boards frequently collaborate with local

businesses, such as wineries, restaurants, and adventure tour operators, to create packaged experiences that encourage visitors to explore more of what Australia has to offer.

Looking for a way to build your brand, improve your marketing results and get a better return on your marketing dollars? Then take a serious look at Collaborative Marketing.

Our companion co mpa ny, Eastern Suburbs Life, has been publishing local community news for over 10 years and is ideally positioned to help you find Collaborative Marketing partners, and get your message into the market.

ADD A UNIQUE TOUCH WITH LOCAL ARTISTS

Felicia Aroney is a distinguished contemporary artist whose work bridges the elegance of European antiquity with the raw beauty of the Australian landscape. Born in Western Australia and now based in Sydney, she draws inspiration from classical architecture, evoking the timeworn charm of aged façades through her distinctive sculptural technique.

Working in oils and acrylics, Fe lici a layers paint with a palette knife, creating depth and texture that seem to lift from the canvas. Her floral and abstract compositions are imbued with a sense of history — whispering of sun-drenched European streets and the untamed Australian coast. Each piece is a testament to her mastery, offering collectors a refined balance of heritage and contemporary sophistication.

CAPTAIN COOK STATUE VANDALISED AGAIN

Captain Cook Statue in Randwick was vandalised again just two days before Australia Day on Jan 26.

The sandstone ha nd had been completely removed and the statue partially covered in red paint.

The statue had been cleaned and restored last year after a similar incident in Feb 2024. The 150 years old statue is located on the corner of Blemore Rd and Avoca St, Randwick .

Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker said "Randwick City Council condemns this act of vandalism of the heritage Captain Cook statue."

Randwick City Council Mayor Dyla n Parker said the heritage-listed statue would be repaired but it would take weeks to do and ratepayers' money could be put to better use.

"Vandalism has no place n our public discussion, it is an illegal act that does a disservice to progressing your cause, a disservice to the community and sets back reconciliation."

Cr Parker said the statue had been vandalised "multiple times" and it took months to clean it after last year's damage.

"As a society I hope that we're able to settle our disagreements peacefully and politely through discussion — vandalising statutes is totally inappropriate and criminal," he said. "We shouldn't have to restore statues of Cook on an annual basis."

NSW Police asked the public to repor t suspicious behaviour around monuments throughout the Australia Day long weekend. Council staff are currently actioning plans to clean and restore the statue.

I

Walkabout with Ruth Kingsford

Kingsford area was originally known as South Kensington. In 1936 it was renamed Kingsford to honour Australian aviator Sir Charles Kingsford Smith (1897–1935), as was the nearby Sydney Airport. Kingsford was undeveloped until a land boom in the 1920s. In the 1940s, many Greeks settled in the area, particularly migrants from the island of Castellorizo. Kingsford today is now a vibrant hub of Asian eateries which have developed due to the UNSW location.

I begin my walk at The Regent, a lively pub on the corner of Middle St and Anzac Pde. The Regent is an example of an Inter-War hotel with Georgian Revival stylistic influences. Built around 1931. Now run by Solotel which has 26 strong and growing venues both in Sydney and Brisbane.

Located on opposite side of Middle St is O'Deas Corner 1912, now sadly neglected. Instrumental in the development of South Kensington was the entrepreneur and racing identity Jack O’Dea. O’Dea came to Australia about 1890 settling in Melbourne. In 1895 at 19 years of age O’Dea was running a successful business in Prahran, Victoria. An enthusiastic better on horse racing, O’Dea became a bookmaker and moved to Woollahra. After he got married the O’Deas settled in Eastern Ave, Kensington. He became a foundation member of the Pony Bookmakers association in May 1906. Jack O’Dea held a bookmakers licence at Randwick for more than 30 years. O’Dea built the first ‘shop residences’ at South Kensington on Bunnerong Rd these including the remaining buildings at O’Deas Corner 1912. 2 3 4

Walking further up Anzac Pde, I pass the old site of the Castellorizian Club, now modern residential units. The Club has moved to Gardeners Rd. Further along the road is Meeks Street. A few years ago, Council allocated $1.5 million funding to design and construct a new plaza on Meeks Street. Now completed is serves as a vibrant and welcoming place for people to meet, congregate and celebrate. 3 4

my

of Sydney, since 1908. The club's history includes the development of many notable players who have gone on to play for the South Sydney Rabbitohs and other clubs.

5 6 7 5

I head back down Anzac Pde to Gardeners Rd to St Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church. Built from 1961 in stages in the Byzantine Basilica style, flanked by twin towers, designed by M Z Avramidis, and completed in 1974. The colourful iconography within was painted by Greek Orthodox iconographer Evangelos Manolios.

A plaque on the landing of the Church was unveiled by the Governor of NSW, Sir Roden Cutler in July 1975 to commemorate Australian and Greek soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice in World War I and World War II.

I walk back down Gardeners Rd passing the Castellorizian Club. The end of World War II brought a further wave of immigration to Australia including a large number of Castellorizians who had been left homeless as a result of the catastrophic damage to the Island during that war. In Jan 1946 the Castellorizian Sports Club was founded under the guidance of Johnie Johns.

The Club settled on the site of the old Odeon Theatre at Anzac Pde, Kingsford which was acquired by the Association which by that time had incorporated. Due to redevelopment the Castellorizian Club moved to Gardeners Rd.

I walk along Anzac Pde to Gardeners Lane, where there are mosaic tributes Charles Kingsford Smith. The tribute consists of a mosaic of Smith, a mosaic of his plane, the Southern Cross, and a Trans Pacific Mural depicting the Southern Cross. The tribute was unveiled on Aug 11, 2010 by Mayor John Procopiadis. It was designed by Masoud Nodous; the artist was Tim Cole. In 2014, the mural depicting the Southern Cross was added. The artist was Annette Barlow.

On June 21, 2014, Councillor Scott Nas h, Mayor of Randwick officially unveiled an updated and extended mural (surrounding the portrait mosaic) by artist Annette Barlow complementing both the the 2010 and 1990 artworks. The mural

In response to growing concerns about social harmony and the alarming rise of antisemitic attacks, I and the Mayors of Inner West and Liverpool Councils announced we will jointly host a Mayoral Roundtable on Feb 6. The focus will be on strengthening unity between communities and address community concerns. I look forward to updating the community on this important initiative.

Randwick Mayor condemns attack on Maroubra Jewish school

Offensive graffiti found on Mount Sinai College and a nearby home in Maroubra on Jan 30 has been condemned by Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker.

The vandalism was located close to a childcare centre that was left severely damaged in a racially motivated firebombing attack.

“The Randwick City community condemns this attack in the strongest of terms,” Mayor Parker said.

“Upon learning about the van dalism, Randwick Council graffiti removal crews immediately attended the site.

“I want our Jewish commun ity to know that we stand in solidarity with them and that our community is a safe and welcoming place.

“These attacks are designed to instil fear and division, but from the conversations I’ve been having with the community, the opposite is happening.

In response to the ongoing antisemitic incidents in Sydney’s east, Randwick Council is in ongoing discussions with Jewish community leaders, the NSW Police, and Waverley and Woollahra Councils to strengthen and coordinate joint security measures, including progressing expansion of the existing CCTV network in the area.

Anyone with in form ation, CCTV and/or dashcam footage is urged to contact Maroubra Police Station or contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Community feedback has been positive, with many asking for permanent changes.

Marjorie O'Neill MP MEMBER FOR COOGEE

Hi everyone,

I wanted to let yo u know about the work that Waverley Men’s Shed have been doing in our community, and the benefit they bring to our community. The Men’s Shed is not just a place where men can go to connect over a cuppa, make new friends and learn new skills – the work that they do strengthens our community and gives back to those who need it.

Already this year, the Waverley Men’s shed have started working on a new cupboard on wheels for the Cerebral Palsy Clinic at the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick as well as making and restoring furniture for many members of the public.

These projects are often m ad e from materials that would have gone into landfill if they weren’t being recycled. A lot of members join because they have more time on their hands after retirement. They’re at the stage where they are losing friends/loved ones or have to re-calibrate after a full working life.

Others have downsized and no longer have their own backyard workshop. The Shed provides the tools and training for them to pick up on forgotten hobbies and interests and make new friends. The Men’s Shed is a safe and inclusive space where men can spend time together with the underlying aim of improving members’ health and wellbeing.

I hope you will join me i n supporting and celebrating this amazing local organisation!

If you'd like more info rm ation on the Men's Shed, scan the QR code to visit their website

Please feel free to reach out if anything further is needed. Contact my office on (02)9398 1822, or at: coogee@parliament.nsw.gov.au, or visit us at 15/53-55 Frenchmans Rd, Randwick.
