As we bring 2025 to a close, our Dec/Jan Edition arrives filled with the reassuring seasonal rhythms our community knows and loves. Whether it’s the return of Flickerfest to Bondi Pavilion (P3), the joyful energy of Christmas markets, New Year’s Eve vantage points across Woollahra (P14), or the many grassroots initiatives featured throughout this issue, this paper is a reminder that – despite the turbulence of the wider world –our local traditions continue to anchor us.
And what a year it’s been! Across Australia and around the world, 2025 has forced many to pause and reflect on the consequences of pursuing complex global goals without fully weighing the risks. The rapid, sometimes chaotic rush toward Net Zero has increasingly revealed its unintended impacts – on energy reliability, affordability, industry viability and, ultimately, on the wellbeing of everyday people.
This yea r, two major developments signalled that the global conversation is now shifting. First, the UN-backed Net Zero Banking Alliance suspended operations, becoming the second United Nations aligned climate group to do so in 2025.
After years of accelerating pressure on banks to constrain lending to vital industries, the retreat suggests a recognition that a balanced, stable global financial system is essential for both economic and environmental progress. Secondly, even Bi ll Gates – long one of the most influential voices in climate policy publicly stated that climate change is “not the end of the world,” adding that nuclear energy, once treated as taboo, must now be reconsidered as a safe and reliable part of the energy mix. For someone who helped shape decades of climate discourse, this wasn’t just a shift in tone -it was an acknowledgment that practical, science-based solutions matter more than slogans.
Taken together, th ese events hint at something important. That is that 2025 may now be remembered as the year we finally began to come to our senses. Rather than unquestioningly pursuing strategies that destabilise communities, strain household budgets, or weaken resilience, people everywhere are calling for approaches that balance environmental responsibility with social and economic stability.
And while global in stitutions reconsider their direction, life here in the Eastern Suburbs reminds us of what truly endures. In this edition, we highlight the Our Place Community Fund grantees (P4), a testament to the creativity, compassion and initiative
alive in our neighbourhoods. We also spotlight New Year’s Eve gatherings, community stories, local history, and the tireless work of volunteers – from Maroubra's RSL community (P8) to the gardeners of St Mark’s Church (P17). We showcase small businesses, charities, local events, the arts, summer celebrations and the many people who make this region a uniquely vibrant place to live.
In a world shifting ben eath our feet, the pages of this edition show a different story –one of continuity, resilience, and the simple joy of people coming together.
That’s why local new s matters more than ever. It keeps communities grounded while national and international narratives swirl at speed. It reminds us that change does not erase tradition, and that our strongest foundations are the ones built close to home – between neighbours, small businesses, local organisations, and the many community members who quietly help keep everything running.
As we look toward 2026, there is reason to hope. If global leaders are beginning to re-evaluate the risks of policies pursued too quickly, perhaps the coming year will mark a turning point – a turning toward more measured decision-making, greater honesty about trade-offs, and a renewed focus on what helps communities thrive, rather than fracture.
Here in the Eastern Suburbs, we already know the formula – Collaboration, community spirit, and genuine human connection. And finally, before we step into the new year, we want to extend a heartfelt thank you!
To the people who help create this paper –our contributors, designers, writers, editors, volunteers, advertisers, and community partners – thank you, your dedication brings every edition to life.
To the hundreds of ocal businesses who support us, many featured throughout this issue, your partnership keeps independent local journalism alive.
And to our readers – whether you’ve been with us for years or picked up this edition for the first time – thank you. Your interest, encouragement, and conversations are what make this paper possible.
As the season unfolds, we hope you find joy in familiar traditions, comfort in community, and optimism in the gathering signs that 2026 may indeed be the start of a brighter, more balanced future.
From all of us at E astern Suburbs Life, warmest wishes for a happy Christmas, a restorative summer, and a hopeful New Year.

Walkabout
with Ruth
Little Bay - Part Two
Photos: Ruth Kliman
Part Two of my walk around Little Bay begins at Pine Cottage, on Pine Ave. It was built by Govt Architect, Walter Liberty Vernon in 1901, as the Clerk and Storekeepers Quarters, but the Hospital Manager Mr T. Goldrick actually lived there. In 1937, the cottage was then used as the nurses preliminary training school. It is now an Early Learning Centre.
I head down Coast Hospital Rd to The Coast Golf Club, perched on the cliffs with spectacular views towards the ocean. If you're lucky you may spot some whales. Apparently the Hospital had a golf course since about 1922 for staff recreation. The Club was formed by former Hospital and University employees in the early 1960’s and the golf course was developed from the small layout to a full 18 holes, with a final parcel of land “granted for use” by the University of NSW. The former laundry building (c. 1899) was converted into the Licensed clubhouse with renovations in the 1960’s and again in the late 80’s and 90’s. 2
3
I head back to Pine Ave passing The Coast Chapel. The building was designed by the architects, Messrs. N. W. McPherson, D. A. Harrison and K. A. Hassall; and built by Brice Mutton and Sons, in 1967. Upon completion, The Coast Chapel was dedicated as an Australian Nurses War Memorial and is a lasting tribute to the services rendered by all Australian nursing sisters in time of war. The Coast Chapel is listed in the War Memorial Register of NSW.
Next to the Chapel is a sculpture dedicated to Christo. In 1969, the international artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude created the world's largest sculpture at Little Bay called: "Wrapped Coast –One Million Square Feet, Little Bay, Sydney, Australia". Many Australian artists and students volunteered to assist them wrapping 2.4kms of coastline, which was 46 to 244m wide, up to 26m high at the northern cliffs, and at sea level at the southern sandy beach.
A bronze scuptural representation of Christo and Jeannne-Claude’s Wrapped Coast has been created by Sydney sculptor Eileen Slarke.
Little Bay Beach: Comprises of a ring-of-rocks bathing pool known as Little Bay Rock Pool or Little Bay Baths which was created from beach rocks at the southern end of the beach in the early 1900s to provide safe shark-free bathing for nurses resident nearby at the Coast Hospital. The pool is still partially intact. On the evening of Dec 3, 1797, George Bass, at the commencement of his first major voyage of discovery in the waters of southern Australia, anchored there in his open whaleboat with a crew of six, referring to it in his journal as Little Harbour.
In Feb 2022, a 35-yea r-ol d expatriate British diving instructor was killed by a white shark while swimming off Little Bay Beach. He was the first person killed by a shark in Sydney coastal waters since the death of Marcia Hathaway in 1963.
6
Heading up Lister Ave I pass a sculpture depicting a treadle sewing machine. The sculpture commemorates the building and the efforts of those who worked there. You’ll see the inscription refers to the Sewing ‘Cottage’, though those who worked in the hospital still fondly remember the Sewing ‘Room’.
Originally located o n Ewing Ave, between Pine Cottage and the present day Coast Centre, the Sewing Room began its active life in the 1890s. The building had various uses over the years including the Nurses Dining Room, the Nurses Lecture Hall and, later, the first Nursing and Medical Museum which opened in 1991.
In the mid-1960s the Sewing Roo m was relocated to Lister Ave. The building which was, at that time, widely referred to as the Sewing Cottage, unfortunately burnt down in the early stages of Prince Henry’s redevelopment.
I complete my walk at Macartney Oval. Many injured sportsmen and women arrived at Prince Henry Hospital in rescue helicopters, landing on what is now the Macartney Oval before being transferred to the accident and emergency unit nearby. It owes its name to one of Australia’s great cricketing legends, Charlie Macartney.
Charlie was consi d ered one of the most brilliant right-handed batsmen in the history of Australian cricket. Daring and confident, he possessed a quickness of eye, hand, and foot, as well as perfect timing, all contributing to him becoming a menace to even the best bowlers.
After war service in France with the Australian Imperial Force, in the 3rd Division Artillery, Macartney resumed his test career, representing Australia between 1920 and 1927. He famously scored a record breaking 345 in under four hours, batting against Nottingham in 1921, earning a place in Wisden’s Cricketing Almanac the following year. He worked at the Prince Henry Hospital as a personnel officer during the late 1940s and early 1950s, during which time the then Medical Superintendent, Dr Walters appointed him curator of the hospital’s cricket oval, now the Macartney Oval.

TYPE 2 DIABETES? TIME TO GET YOUR HEARING TESTED
A growing body of evidence suggests that hearing loss may be a significant yet under-recognized complication of type 2 diabetes. A new systematic review and meta-analysis published in Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery found that people with type 2 diabetes are up to four times more likely to experience hearing loss than those without the condition, with prevalence ranging from 40.6% to 71.9% among individuals with diabetes.
The study also found that hea ring l oss becomes more likely with longer disease duration. Individuals with diabetes for 10 or more years had more than double the risk of
hearing loss than those with a shorter duration of illness.
Research suggests that hearing loss in diabetes may reflect microvascular changes, similar to retinopathy or neuropathy, and could serve as an early signal of broader metabolic stress. Damage to small blood vessels that supply the inner ear may reduce oxygen and nutrient delivery, contributing to degeneration of key cochlear structures involved in sound processing, according to the study authors.

DOING GOOD WITH PURPOSE: How local kids can make a real difference this summer!
As we approach the end of the year, many families in the Eastern Suburbs are winding down, catching their breath, and preparing for the festive season. But for thousands of people across Sydney, this time of year can be incredibly tough. The rising cost of living has pushed many households to breaking point. We are seeing more families who can afford the roof over their heads, but not the meals on their tables.
At Kids Giving Back, we h ave never experienced demand like we have this year. Requests for meals, care packs, and breakfast boxes have surged, with charities reaching out daily for support. Community organisations are reporting more parents skipping meals so their children can eat. This is where our co m munity can come together – and where young people can shine.
Kids Giving Back’s School Holiday Programs, designed for children aged 5–14, offer something uniquely special: an opportunity for kids to have fun, learn new skills, and directly help people doing it tough. Our hands-on programs allow young participants to cook nutritious meals, pack breakfast hampers, prepare care packs,
and create thoughtful items for vulnerable communities – all while learning the power of empathy, kindness, and connection.
For older teens aged 14 –18, our Youth ChangeMaker App provides a flexible way to get involved. The App connects teens with real volunteering opportunities across Sydney,
allowing them to choose activities that suit their interests and schedules – whether that’s food relief, community events, packing programs, helping out at our school holiday programs or supporting local charities. Teens can track their hours, build confidence, and contribute meaningfully during the holidays and beyond.
Whether through the Holiday Programs or the Youth ChangeMaker App, young people experience what we call the “triple impact”: they grow, recipients receive vital support, and the broader community becomes stronger.
While our activities are energetic and engaging, every child and teen leaves knowing they have made someone’s day a little easier. For many families, this becomes a highlight of their holiday – an uplifting reminder that giving back is not just impactful, but joyful.
With Dec and Jan holidays approaching, programs are filling fast. If you’re looking for something purposeful, memorable, and genuinely meaningful for your children or teens to take part in, we would love to welcome them.
Join us this summ er. Do something with purpose. Help us continue creating the next generation of generosity.

THE EVOLUTION OF THE ST MARK’S GARDENS – Part 1
If you are passing by St Mark’s Anglican Church Darling Point, take the time to enjoy the beauty of the church’s gardens. Tended lovingly by volunteer St Mark’s Gardeners over many decades, the church gardens; including the Memorial Garden; offer a quiet moment in the busyness of life.
The land for the Memorial Ga rdens was purchased in 1921 and in 1943-1944 the land was designated specifically for a garden. The St Mark’s History book, Honourable Engagement – St Mark’s Church Darling Point: The First 150 Years by Susan Mary Woolcock Withycombe records the following:
“The Churchwardens and Rector hope that…it may prove a place of rest and
relaxation for those who find themselves out for a walk and would like to sit down for a while amid pleasant surroundings…Canon Barder is hoping it may become our ‘Garden of Remembrance,’ and he would like to see it dedicated to ‘all those who in their generation served God and man’….The parishioners responded warmly to this idea, donating the garden seats, the entire pergola, and the sundial, plants, shrubs, and bags of fertilizer. The garden was opened appropriately with a garden party on the 15th September 1945 by Miss Monica Flower.”
Since that time a wall h as been add ed to hold plaques in memory of loved ones. The history book concludes: “As the neighbourhood of St Mark’s has been increasingly built upon, the garden has become, as Canon Barder hoped, ‘a beautiful blessing to the community’.”
There have always been fa ithful parishioners and friends of St Mark’s who have cared for the garden. Mrs Jean Smithers (after whom the Jean Smithers room in the church’s Howard Lea Hall is named) was a notable volunteer gardener, as was Dr Ross Hayes and his enthusiastic team of gardeners.
The history book record s: “The grounds and gardens around the church were responding splendidly to the care lavished on them by a newly formed team of gardeners led by Dr Ross Hayes, who had taken on the task in 1990. Dr Hayes and his wife, June, had presented a new Memorial Wall in memory of their son, Matthew, together with Mr Peter Punch and Mr Hugh Webster in memory of
Elspeth Elltringham Punch and other members of their family. Restoration work on the Memorial Garden included installing a watering system and ‘implementing a programme of weed control and soil reconditioning’, not to mention a good deal of planting. The Memorial Garden flourished again, and was fulfilling the intentions of the earlier Rectors, Canon Lea who purchased the land and Canon Barder who set it apart and had planted it as a ‘Garden of Remembrance’, as a pleasant and peaceful oasis where people could come and relax and be tranquil. The Garden Committee then turned their attention to the rest of the grounds around the church. From 1995 to the present the Garden Committee has continued under the able leadership of Mrs Di Coates, and the beauty of the gardens has been greatly appreciated.”
In 1995 agapanthas were added to the garden. The history book explains: “At the suggestion of one of its members, Sarah Lawrence, the Garden Committee planted the bank at the west end, alongside Darling Point Road, with agapanthus, as a living reminder of Rev Canon James (Jim) Whild and his favourite Agapanthus/ Agape sermon.”
In Part 2 current Head Ga rdener, Mrs Di Coates, will share her reflections about the evolution of the gardens.

A passion for rectifying Damp Houses
Luca Turnbull has now been rectifying damp houses for over half a century. His passion for damp house restoration, began whilst researching the damp in his family home in 1959. The house situated in Ocean St, Woollahra is a farmhouse built around 1830.
Luca found that the 12 inch thick convi ct hewn sandstone provided an excellent protection against damp. And the thick sandstone also provided excellent insulation qualities and soundproofing.
Luca then moved to Tuscany, Italy, where he studied at the Accademia di Belle Arte, specialising in Roman waterproofing techniques.
After returning to Austra lia i n 1979, Luca started to rectify damp houses. Some projects included; Altona in Point Piper; Palm Beach mansions; houses in the Southern Highlands and Cumberland basin; holiday beach houses on the South coast; apartments and factories around Sydney.
Decades of dam p house rectification has led Luca to develop inventions and new industrial designs. He developed “Clean Sheet” inventions to control damp and cold in houses.
Another of Luca's invent io ns is called the “M.T.101”and is a hybrid room & subfloor ventilation system. This Australian invention makes conventional subfloor ventilation systems obsolete. The M.T.101 draws cool air at floor level from the house and forces it into
the subfloor. This causes all cold and damp subfloor air to be forced out 24 hours a day.
The cool air at floor level i s then replaced by warmer air drawn down from ceiling level. Descending warm air warms up the cold lower walls and floors as well as furniture. Therefore, less energy is required to heat rooms in winter causing cost savings.
The M.T.101 can fit n eat ly in the bottom of a wardrobe or cupboard or in the space under stairways or other little used spaces. The system is soundproofed a nd uses less power than a mobile telephone charger. Luca asks clients to check the kilowatt hours
• Solar powered hot attic ventilation.
• Dusty room filtration with pleated disposable filter media.
• General air filtration fo reduce allergies.
• Wall and ceiling mould control.
• Underfloor & damp basement solutions.
on their power bills after installation. The M.T.101 will normally show the kilowatt hours reduced thus saving energy.
These and other energy efficient inventions will make houses more comfortable in the future.
• Houses wil l be cooler and free of dust with lower power bills.
• Indoor air movement and temperatures will be easily controlled.
Luca's company DA M P specialises in:
• Whisper quiet subfloor ventilation.
• Rising damp solutions.

• Home theatre equipment ventilation.
• Wine cellar temperature control.
• Alternatives to damp proofing & damp courses.

COUNCIL NEWS
Have your say on new EV charging locations
With 60% of our residents living in apartments or without off-street parking in our area –three times the NSW average of electric vehicle uptake – greater provision of public charging EV is essential.
There are currently 4,000 EVs registered in the eastern suburbs and this is projected to increase to 10,000 by 2025, and to more than 35,000 by 2030.
Which is why along with Waverley and Randwick councils, we’re seeking feedback on proposed locations for new EV chargers to be installed across the three LGAs, in addition to the 300 we’ve already installed in the past few years, including 35 more installed in Woollahra in just the past 12 months.
Let us know what you th ink about proposed new locations by Dec 19, by visiting our consultation page: yoursay.woollahra. nsw.gov.au/ev-chargers You’ll find a map with all of the proposed new locations and there’s also a ‘Suggest a charger’ location section – we’d love to hear your ideas.
Comber Street Reserve upgrade
Comber Street Reserve in Paddington is a valued community space – a place to connect, relax, and enjoy the outdoors. We’re planning to refresh the reserve to create a more welcoming and enjoyable place for local residents with a new design to make it more comfortable for sitting and socialising, while creating more opportunities for informal children’s play. Feedback on the proposal w ill b e considered for incorporation into the final design. Share your thoughts by Dec 17 at yoursay.woollahra.nsw.gov.au/ comber-street

Our biggest-ever Summer Safety campaign
As custodians of Australia’s busiest and most beloved beaches, Waverley Council is committed to keeping our locals and visitors safe. That’s why we’ve officially launched our biggest-ever summer safety campaign.
This year, safety messages are being spread far and wide, and in multiple languages. You’ll notice them on signs, flags, banners, decals, in advertisements and on social media. There’s even a special mural at the iconic Bondi seawall.
This year’s campaig n highlights the two simple steps people can take to keep themselves safe at the beach:
• Swim between the flags.
• Only swim during patrol hours.
Towing trial targets illegal parking
There’s been growing frustration among Waverley residents over illegally parked cars blocking people’s driveways. In fact, we received more than 2000 complaints about it in the last financial year. Now, those responsible could have their vehicles towed and face fines, under a 12-month trial.
Residents can lodge a comp laint with council, parking officers will then attend and tow the vehicle if it’s safe to do so. At the end of the 12-months, we will evaluate the feasibility of permanently adopting the policy.
Festive fun takes over Waverley

Safeguarding our Summer by the Sea
Hi Ever yone,
Summe r along our coastline is something we never take for granted. Whether it’s an early swim at Coogee, a long afternoon at Bondi or Tamarama, or a quiet morning doing laps at Wylie's, our community knows how special this stretch of coast is. As we head into another warm season, the words “sun safety” may prompt a small, collective groan, reminding us of risks we’d much rather forget on a perfect beach day. Even so, taking a moment to plan how we enjoy the sun can keep our days safe and worry-free!
Here, UV levels soar to “extreme” most days between 10am and 4pm, and sunburn can set in within minutes (even on cooler or cloudy days!). Sunburn can occur in as little as 10 minutes, increasing the long-term risk of skin cancer, eye damage, and premature ageing. Simple, consistent sun protection is the key to enjoying our beautiful coastal summers without putting your long-term health at risk. The most effective approach is still to follow the well-known Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek, and Slide guidelines:
• Slip on lightweight, lo ng-sleeved clothing when you can. Many locals now choose UV-protective shirts and rash vests for beach days and coastal walks.
• Slop on SPF 50+ broad-spectrum sunscreen. Apply 20 minutes before heading out and reapply every two hours. It is best to apply more often after swimming at the beach or if you’ve been towel-drying.
• Slap on a hat that protects your face, ears, and neck. Wide-brim and legionnaire-style hats offer the best coverage.
• Seek shade where possible. At Bronte Park, under umbrellas at Tamarama, or beside the cliffs near Wylie's, shade can offer important breaks from direct UV.
• Slide on wraparound sunglasses to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays. So, stock up on sunscreen and hats, and make a game out of finding your favourite spot of shade on your favourite beach. By making choices now that make sun safety part of your routine, you can enjoy our beautiful beaches and outdoor spaces all summer long.
