General Manager Dina McMichael

As we step into December, East Cobb begins to sparkle with the familiar glow of the holidays. The streets light up, community gatherings fill the calendar, and a special kind of warmth settles over our neighborhoods. It’s a moment in the year that invites us to slow down, come together, and appreciate the spirit of generosity and joy all around us.

This season, I hope you’ll join me in celebrating the people and places that make East Cobb feel like home—by shopping local, supporting our nonprofits, or simply sharing kindness with those who need it most. Take a stroll through our parks, explore a holiday market, or savor the traditions that make this time of year so meaningful.

As we prepare to welcome a new year, I’m deeply grateful for you—our readers, partners, and neighbors. Thank you for being part of this community. Wishing you a holiday season filled with peace, laughter, and moments you’ll treasure. Here’s to a bright and hopeful 2026!

A graduate of Santa School, he received specialized training to create inclusive holiday experiences where every child—especially those with special needs feels seen, valued, and celebrated. Service has long been at the heart of David’s life. A 22-year member of Johnson Ferry Church, he has taught Sunday school, mentored youth, and led with steady faith and compassion. BUILDING SUCCESS: DINA MCMICHAEL’S INSPIRING CAREER RISE

Discovering your true calling and aligning it with professional success is no easy endeavor. It is especially challenging to embark on this chosen career path as a single parent later in life. But for Big Sky Construction’s General Manager, Dina McMichael, climbing the ladder to success was quick, driven by passion, resilience, and determination.

“I found myself in my mid-40s not knowing what I wanted to be when I grew up. I learned that, over the years of teaching and being a stay-at-home mother, I was still building tangible skills that I could apply to my career,” McMichael said. “So, my advice to anyone is that it’s never too late to make a goal and chase a dream. I hope

that I have also given my children the confidence that they can do anything, no matter when they start.”

However, McMichael attributes her current successes and accomplishments to her upbringing during those developmental years. With a father who taught her to be independent and a mother who reinforced the importance of pursuing her passion and taking on the responsibilities that come with it, she quickly realized that professional success and personal satisfaction come from having a hardworking, motivated mindset.

As a high school athlete participating in both track and field and cheerleading, she learned the

importance of communication and collaboration while staying attuned to the details that contribute to success.

“I disciplined myself, spending countless hours at the track working on the small details,” she said. “During one track practice, we spent hours focusing on breathing when running. So, being detail-oriented was instilled in me, and I still carry that into my business today.”

As the years passed, she fully realized her true passion for construction and renovation. She would often watch houses on websites like Zillow and follow established contractors and developers on television and social media. But while her interest in the industry was always a priority, it never overshadowed the importance of raising her four children.

“I was focused on being a mother, but life threw something unexpected my way,” she said. “My husband passed away, and becoming a widow forced me to pivot my plan…I realized time waits for no one, and it was time to start chasing my own dreams.”

Initially a client in 2020, she enjoyed observing the entire process of Big Sky Construction’s renovations to the main floor of her home. This was the spark she needed to seek involvement and employment with the company. She quickly reprioritized her own passions and interests in the construction industry.

“Through the renovation of my home’s main floor, I gained a better understanding of the scope and sequence of construction and realized that a well-run project equals a happy customer,” she said. “Starting with

the company as a project manager, I applied my previous management skills from my teaching, sales, and office management to different areas of the business. In my current role, I get the best of all areas of the business. I still build relationships with our clients and oversee projects from the management perspective.”

Now sitting as the company’s general manager, McMichael oversees the entire company, leveraging her eye for detail and love of home renovations. Having been with the company for over three years and completing an average of roughly 50 residential and commercial projects per year, she understands the essential need for teamwork, collaboration, communication, and driven talent.

“From expanding Reformation Brewery’s catering and event space, to helping new businesses like CardCo in East Cobb and Playground Adventures in Holly Springs bring their visions to life, we’re proud to play a part in helping local businesses grow,” she said. “On the residential side, nothing means more to us than helping families create spaces that feel like home…We treat every project with the same level of care and craftsmanship… helping restore not just their homes, but their peace of mind.”

Currently celebrating 17 years in business, McMichael is grateful for the talented team members who make it all possible. And under the leadership of Dina McMichael, who leads by example with compassion, integrity, and an unwavering focus on service, Big Sky continues to raise the bar for the client experience. With Dina’s career only just beginning, she is excited to continue growing with Big Sky as they expand into other markets and states.

2025 EAST COBB CITIZEN OF THE YEAR

The Cobb Chamber’s East Cobb Area Council has selected Michael Paris, President and CEO of the Council for Quality Growth, as its 2025 Citizen of the Year. The Citizen of the Year Awards are given to honor an individual whose impact through the years will be recognized and regarded with pride throughout the area as a role model. These outstanding citizens are chosen for their definable, exceptional deeds, with which he or she has made their community a better place to live. Awards are given based on local area nominations. The 2025 East Cobb Citizen of the Year award was presented at the East Cobb Area Council breakfast at Indian Hills Country Club.

Michael Paris, a Cobb County native, took the helm at the Council for Quality Growth in late 2003 and has worked to expand the Council and to spread its mission of promoting balanced and responsible growth throughout the metro region and the state. Paris’ steady leadership, quiet influence, and deep commitment have shaped nearly every part of the East Cobb community. Paris is involved in numerous community and professional activities. His affiliations include the Board of Directors for the Cobb Chamber of Commerce, the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce, and the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, as well as volunteering for the YMCA of Metro Atlanta, the Cobb County Planning Commission, and The Extension. He is a member of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties, the Urban Land Institute, an Association Member of the Board of the Atlanta Commercial Board of Realtors, and a graduate of both Leadership Cobb and Regional Leadership Institute.

For more than three decades, Paris has been a driving force behind the growth and impact of the YMCA in Cobb County, helping establish new branches, strengthen vital programs, and ensure thousands of families have access to opportunities that enrich their

lives. Recently, Paris served on The Extension’s Capital Campaign Committee, raising funds for the 2023 addition of their 56-bed men’s dormitory. Tyler Driver, Executive Director of The Extension, said “He helped the organization raise $7,000,000 in record time so we can serve more people. In the process, the trajectory of the families he has touched is forever changed. They have opportunities they never felt possible because he believed they deserved their best future too.” Throughout his years in Cobb, Paris has consistently put service above self in all he does, dedicating himself to helping improve the quality of life in East Cobb.

A NEW ERA OF DENTURES

For decades, traditional dentures were the only option for people who had lost most or all of their teeth. While they restored appearance and basic function, many patients struggled with the same frustrations of slipping, sore spots, food limitations, and the constant worry that their dentures might shift or even fall out at the worst possible moment. Today, dentistry has entered a new era. Thanks to modern implant technology, patients can now enjoy fixed hybrid dentures, a life-changing alternative that looks, feels, and functions like natural teeth.

Unlike traditional dentures, fixed hybrids are not large acrylic plates that rest on the gums. Instead, they are streamlined horseshoe-shaped prosthetics that attach securely to dental implants. This design eliminates the bulky plastic that often interferes with speech and taste, and it gives patients a smile that feels incredibly natural. Because these restorations are anchored by implants, they do not move, rub, or create the ulcers and sore spots that so many denture wearers struggle with.

The improvement in comfort is matched by a dramatic boost in function. Fixed hybrid dentures offer far more chewing power than traditional dentures, allowing patients to enjoy a wider range of foods including many they haven’t confidently eaten in years. Biting into an apple, chewing a steak, laughing freely, and speaking clearly all become easier and more natural.

One of the most remarkable aspects of this treatment is the efficiency of today’s protocols. For many of our patients, we can remove failing teeth and place implants on the very same day. A natural looking temporary fixed hybrid denture is attached immediately, allowing our patients to leave the office with a full smile they don’t have to take in and out. After the implants heal and integrate, this temporary restoration is replaced with a beautifully crafted final hybrid that includes a strong metal substructure for long-term durability and stability.

The emotional impact is just as significant as the physical transfor-

mation. Patients frequently report an overwhelming sense of freedom and renewed confidence - no more worrying about dentures slipping during a meal, clicking when they talk, or worst of all, falling out unexpectedly and breaking. Instead, they enjoy the security of a smile that stays put, looks fantastic, and truly becomes part of them.

Fixed hybrid implant dentures are more than a dental treatment. They are a restoration of comfort, confidence, and quality of life. For anyone frustrated with traditional dentures or facing the loss of their natural teeth, this modern solution can provide a smile that feels secure, beautiful, and fully functional once again.

Accompanied by a live orchestra, Atlanta Ballet will transport audiences of all ages to a whimsical winter wonderland, dazzling them with a spectacular version of the classical ballet choreographed by Yuri Possokhov.

Possokhov, an award-winning choreographer, reimagined The Nutcracker for Atlanta Ballet in 2018. With stunning costumes, hand-painted sets, and cutting-edge production design, his vision transformed the holiday classic into the Southeast’s premier Nutcracker experience. Paired with the Atlanta Ballet Orchestra performing Tchaikovsky’s iconic score, the production remains a beloved seasonal staple.

“Through innovative choreography and immersive storytelling, our Nutcracker has captivated generations of audiences, offering opportunities to make new discoveries every time,” said Gennadi Nedvigin, artistic director of Atlanta Ballet. “We look forward to this annual performance as it showcases our excellence as a premier dance company and celebrates our role as a cornerstone of the Atlanta arts community.”

The Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre will transform into a festive winter wonderland, adorned with Christmas trees, snowflakes, and specialty photo stations throughout the lobby. Before and after the show, guests can shop for gifts at the Atlanta Ballet Boutique and enjoy seasonal treats like hot cocoa, apple cider, and holiday cocktails. A pre-performance DJ will welcome guests with favorite holiday tunes.

“For 66 years, The Nutcracker has been a time-honored tradition where Atlantans of all ages gather to make special holiday memories,” said Tom West, Atlanta Ballet’s executive director. “Atlanta Ballet is proud to carry on this enduring legacy and inspire new and returning audience members even after the curtain closes.”

Atlanta Ballet will also present an abbreviated version for four Kids In Step shows, giving thousands of children the chance to experience a special behind-thescenes look at the magic backstage. Kids In Step dates are December 9, 10, 11, and 17.

THE HOLIDAY GIFT OF COMPANIONSHIP: CELEBRATING THE HUMAN–ANIMAL BOND

Are you thinking about welcoming a new pet into your home or gifting one to someone special this holiday season? At Just For Pets Animal Hospital, we proudly support responsible pet ownership and are excited to celebrate with you as you consider adding a new furry family member. The human–animal bond is powerful, enriching, and mutually beneficial—especially during the warmth and togetherness of the holiday season.

The benefits of having a pet extend far beyond companionship. Interacting positively with animals has been shown to promote healing and improve overall health. Studies suggest that owning a pet may reduce the risk of dying from a heart attack or stroke by up to 31%. Simple, everyday moments—like petting your dog or cat or watching fish glide through an aquarium—can lower cortisol levels, reduce blood pressure, and create a sense of calm. Pets provide an unconditional love that encourages relaxation and emotional balance.

Pets also play a key role in supporting physical health. Dog owners, for example, tend to be more willing to engage in outdoor activities, log more weekly exercise, and are less likely to experience obesity. One study even noted that individuals who walk their dogs regularly may face only one-third the risk of developing diabetes compared to those who don’t own dogs. This increased physical activity naturally contributes to better fitness, stronger cardiovascular health, and improved overall well-being.

Children benefit tremendously from growing up with animals in the household. Research indicates that early-life exposure to pets may reduce the likelihood of developing allergies or asthma. Pets can also boost children’s emotional and social development, teaching responsibility, empathy, and confidence. Many families find that pets help children feel more secure at home and provide a consistent, comforting presence.

Emotional well-being is another area where pets shine. Pets can significantly reduce feelings of loneliness and social isolation, offering important companionship for people of all ages. For older adults especially, caring for a pet can create a sense of purpose, increase daily socialization, and improve resilience against mental health challenges. Interacting with pets has been shown to boost

serotonin and endorphin levels, improving mood, reducing symptoms of depression, and even increasing daily laughter—something pet owners consistently report.

Beyond companionship, many animals provide essential services. Service dogs and other trained support animals offer vital assistance to individuals with disabilities, helping them live more independent and fulfilling lives.

And let’s not forget the benefits for the pets themselves. When a pet finds their forever home, they gain emotional stability, reduced stress, and the comfort of consistent, loving companionship. The bond formed between pets and their families is remarkable—and lifelong.

If you’re considering adopting a pet this holiday season, it’s important to reflect on your lifestyle, budget, and home environment. Think about training needs, grooming, longterm veterinary care, and how a new pet will fit into your family dynamic. Holidays often provide extra time at home, making it an ideal period for bonding, training, and easing your new pet into their environment.

Your local shelter is a wonderful place to find your new fur baby. And once you do, Just For Pets Animal Hospital is here to support you—we offer a complimentary physical exam for every newly adopted shelter pet. Call 470-481-2300 to schedule your appointment.

Wishing you and your furry family a warm, joyful, and love-filled holiday season.

SPARKLE SUCCESS STORY

Christine Stoltz began her fitness journey in 2019. She completed the Women’s Half Marathon in November. Here’s her story.

I am a mom, a wife, and I work in healthcare. At the beginning of my journey, I spent a lot of time taking care of others and not prioritizing my own health and wellness. was encouraging others to take good care of themselves, but was not making my own fitness a priority.

I saw a Sparkle success story in the newspaper in 2019. I realized another year had passed without focusing on improving my fitness. was incredibly busy but needed to make a change. wanted to be strong in body and mind as age. My good intentions to improve my fitness were not translating into action. I was exercising when it “fit in” my schedule instead of building it into my schedule.

Originally, took a fitness class at a local studio, but found it more flexible to exercise at home and adapt my strength training. When scheduled exercise, it became a habit and part of my routine over time, and something I looked forward to doing. I wanted results overnight. needed to adapt the mindset of progress over perfection. I kept a list of small wins I accomplished along the way to reflect on how far I had come. I made the decision to get up earlier in the morning to exercise, and claim time for myself and my health.

My fitness mantra comes from Nobel Peace Prize recipient Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who once said, “If your dreams do not scare you, they are not big enough.”

I dreamt bigger and set more challenging goals. It is easy to “play it safe” and set goals that do not stretch us. While it is good to be realistic, I had more success when I stepped out of my comfort zone and set a goal that intimidated me in fitness.

Wanting to achieve more, briskly walked and set a goal of completing a 5K or 10K monthly for a year. Once accomplished, I set a bigger goal of completing a half-marathon. I was likely to be among the last finishers, but that did not stop me. I shared this goal with my friends and family, and in doing so, I believed it was possible. We can have the best of intentions for reaching a goal, but having someone holding me accountable really made me follow through.

A struggle faced before the race was that life happened and my schedule changed, making it impossible

Before After

 Christine Stoltz’s journey from 2019 to today: proof that small steps, consistency, and courage can lead to big finish-line moments.

to complete longer walks/runs that had planned to use as training. This left me feeling less prepared, and I struggled to believe in my ability to complete the race, right up to race day. My accountability partners reminded me of the physical and mental grit I had developed to reach this goal. Crossing the finish line and seeing my Sparkle friends cheering for me brought tears to my eyes.

My Top Three Tips:

1. Do not wait for the “right time” to make a change –make a change TODAY. You do not have to have it all figured out. Just take the next step forward.

2. Be inspired by others, but compete with yourself.

3. Celebrate the small wins.

Talk with your health care team about what type of movement is right for you, especially if you have health conditions. Any progress counts!

HOLIDAY WELLNESS IN EAST COBB

December is full of excitement, travel, and plenty of holiday meals—but it can also make it harder to stay on track with healthy habits. A few simple choices, paired with great local resources right here in East Cobb, can help you finish the year feeling strong and energized.

Start with movement you enjoy. Take a brisk walk at East Cobb Park, hit the trails at Sope Creek, or try a group fitness class locally. If you prefer a gentler routine, pilates or yoga offer calming ways to stay active during the busy season.

Fuel your body with real, colorful foods—shop fresh produce at Sprouts Farmers Market, Trader Joe’s, or Publix at Woodlawn Square. Keep healthy grab-and-go options on hand.

For mental well-being, schedule quiet moments at East Cobb Library or take a peaceful stroll around Fullers Park. Volunteering with MUST Ministries or Simple Needs GA is another meaningful way to lift your spirits.

With a little intention—and the support of our vibrant East Cobb community—you can enjoy the season while staying healthy, grounded, and ready for the year ahead.
