As part of the 50th anniversary, Mount Paran Christian School students represent the four main pillars of the school: Gavin Gaertner (senior) for athletics, Eden Oswald (middle school) for academics, Sullivan Tarvin (lower school) for Christian life, and Blakely Cook (preschool) for the arts.

PUBLISHER’S NOTE
November invites us to slow down, reflect, and give thanks—for the people who lift us up, the stories that connect us, and the community that continually inspires us. This issue celebrates strength in all its forms— physical, emotional, and spiritual.
From Heather Durham’s courageous health journey honoring her son’s memory to our local wellness champions reminding us that healing often begins with community, this month’s stories embody perseverance and hope. We also shine a light on those serving others—from volunteers helping neighbors in need to small businesses that keep East Cobb thriving. Their commitment reminds us that gratitude is more than a feeling—it’s an action.
This year, I feel especially thankful. I will be blessed to spend Thanksgiving surrounded by family and friends as we celebrate my son’s wedding in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico—a reminder of how precious life’s milestones truly are.
As you gather with loved ones, may you feel that same spirit of connection and gratitude reflected on every page.
Wishing you a month of health, happiness, and heartfelt thanks—right here in East Cobb.

MOVING MOUNTAINS FOR 50 YEARS AT MOUNT PARAN CHRISTIAN SCHOOL
In 1976, the Mount Paran Christian Learning Center was established with a staff of two people and a single three-year-old class. Since then, God has richly blessed Mount Paran Christian School now celebrating its 50th year on its 68-acre campus. The school has become the largest independent school in Cobb county growing to an enrollment of 1,320 in grades Pre-K3-12th and 275 career educators. Along the way, MPCS has been steadfast in its mission to provide academic excellence in a Christ-centered environment, developing resilience in students and a faith that can move mountains.
How To “Move Mountains”
MPCS is a partner to parents in raising kids up to be fully prepared for the life journey ahead. Students must have a solid faith foundation and possess the confidence to tackle any challenge. Teachers help students aim high, enabling them to navigate through and ultimately conquer each milestone. Whether it’s rigorous academic pursuits in the classroom, courage to perform on stage, or the ability to excel on the athletic field, MPCS guides students to approach their individual educational journey with a growth mindset and an unwavering faith.
Success is achieved through the support of a close-knit school community and highly-qualified, nurturing teachers who very-intentionally know and love each child individually — teachers who share an unapologetic, commitment to
Christ. They build character and determination in their students to overcome inevitable obstacles while encouraging them to actively pursue and achieve their individual goals.
A Strong History of Rising Above
What students and teachers are accomplishing together is leading the way in private education. Peak metrics include MPCS preschoolers performing with 13% higher Kindergarten readiness; high school students passing 91% of their AP exams, and an astounding half of applicants gaining acceptance to UGA or Georgia Tech. Award-winning arts and magnet programs coupled with continuous State-championship teams among 17 sports offerings, MPCS supports a well-rounded, next-level experience. Coaches and instructors are committed to discipling young people for Christ, ensuring that hard work, character-development, and faith are never left behind.
The result of an intentional educational journey is ultraprepared graduates who are resilient leaders with hearts for service. Class of 2019 alum Kamryn Kitchens who attended Baylor affirms, “Much more important than the knowledge, athletic training, and study skills I learned at Mount Paran that have served me well, is growing so much closer to Christ during my time there which will forever stay with me.” As MPCS students navigate through school, they learn to blaze trails, on their way to becoming the next generation of dynamic leaders.
Mount Paran Christian School lower school and high school students celebrate the school’s 50th anniversary on the 68-acre campus near Kennesaw Mountain. The school offers Tuesday Tours each week at 9am. Learn more at: mtparanschool.com.explore
MEZZA LUNA BRINGS AUTHENTIC ITALIAN CUISINE TO EAST COBB
By Adam Darby
Seeking out a truly authentic Italian dining experience can be difficult when you live overseas. Whether it is the cuisine, the staff, or the environment, it is not always easy to find a restaurant that closely reflects Italian culture. But with Co-Owners and spouses, Daniele and Bella Furfaro, being Italian natives, they bring their own cultural experience to provide an unmatched dining experience to East Cobb.
“A lot of people say they are authentic, but they really aren’t…I want to provide the real deal,” said Co-Owner Daniele Furfaro. “I’m trying to bring upscale [Italian] cuisine to Marietta.”
Since opening the restaurant in 2016, the couple has transported customers by bringing their prior dining experiences to the table. Everything from the tables and utensils to the music and the restaurant’s overall appearance resembles those of restaurants and eateries back home. Their key ingredient is supporting their authenticity with first-hand knowledge and experience.
“I want everything inside the restaurant to make a really good experience for the customer,” he said. “It’s not just dining; it’s creating a nice experience.”
However, an authentic Italian meal must also include dishes that are properly prepared and well executed. To ensure the customer receives the best possible cuisine, Daniele also serves as the restaurant’s Chef and Pastry Chef. At the same time, Bella works in the front to welcome customers and ensure a satisfying visit. Having graduated from culinary school back in Italy, Daniele provides meals that go above and beyond.
“A lot of owners own the restaurant, but are not also the Chef,” he said. “I was born and raised in Italy and worked in restaurants and pastry shops.”
In addition to delectable cuisine and a beautiful restaurant inside, Mezza Luna also offers outdoor dining during the warmer months. For those looking to enjoy the upcoming Holiday season further, the restaurant allows customers to book the space for private events and celebrations. Live musical performances are included with any private experiences.
Mezza Luna is located at 2100 Roswell Road, Suite 2198, in Marietta. Hours of operation are Monday to Thursday from 11:30am to 2pm and 5 to 9pm; Fridays from 11:30am to 2pm and 5 to 10pm; Saturdays from 11:30am to 10pm; and Sundays from 12 to 9pm. For more information or to make a reservation, call 678-214-5856.
PRIVATE SCHOOL GUIDE
While the public schools in East Cobb County do a good job of providing a quality education, many East Cobb parents seek out “a better fit” for their junior scholars. Finding a quality private school can be a daunting task. As a first step, take a look at our annual list of private schools. Many of these schools will be hosting Open Houses this month, and quite a few have registration deadlines in January or February. So if you are considering private education, now is the time to investigate your options.

COBB COUNTY RESIDENT
CECILIA ROWE ANNOUNCES THE MUSIC STUDIO ATLANTA WILL EXPAND THIS NOVEMBER
Cobb County’s own Cecilia Rowe, CEO and Founder of The Music Studio Atlanta and recipient of the 2025 Top 25 Business of the Year and Woman-Owned Business of the Year awards, is continuing to grow one of Georgia’s leading privately owned music education schools. Serving almost 1,400 students each week in a fun, warm, and encouraging environment, The Music Studio Atlanta currently operates locations in East Cobb and Vinings and will open its third location in Johns Creek, Georgia area this November.
Cecilia’s own musical roots run deep. After moving to Atlanta in 1989, Cecilia and her family started Courtnay & Rowe In-Home Music Academy, and spent over 20 years teaching piano, voice, and guitar. She later opened The Music Studio Atlanta and merged the two businesses, building the award-winning, multi-location music school it is today.
Cecilia is also the author of Don’t Miss Your Child’s Musical Window, a guide for parents on choosing the right time to start music, the best instrument, and finding a great teacher, and more. The book reflects her decades of experience as both an educator and a parent, emphasizing that music isn’t about perfection, but about enjoying the journey at every age. It is available as a complementary download on their website.
“Our mission has always been to make music accessible, enjoyable, and enriching for every student. Nothing makes me happier than hearing parents say we are the ‘go-to’ for music lessons,” said Cecilia. “As a proud Cobb County resident, I love that our East Cobb location has become a hub where local families gather, grow, and
celebrate the joy of music together. Cobb has been the foundation of our growth, and I’m thrilled to represent our community as we continue expanding across metro-Atlanta.”
The Music Studio Atlanta has grown into one of the region’s premier destinations for music instruction. With a team of experienced instructors and a welcoming environment, the school offers private lessons, group classes, and performance opportunities, helping students grow in confidence, creativity, and lifelong love of music.

A DAY OF SERVICE, A LIFETIME OF IMPACT
“S
ervice Above Self” isn’t just a motto for the East Cobb Rotary Club; it’s a way of life that inspired their first annual Day of Service on Saturday, October 25. With tools in hand and a deep commitment to their community, Rotarians dedicated their morning to making a difference in their own backyard.
The day was filled with impactful projects completed in partnership with local organizations. At the East Cobb Park, members partnered with the East Cobb Home Depot to beautify flower gardens. Elsewhere, Rotarians were getting creative, painting signs for Kidz2Leaders, an organization committed to breaking the cycle of generational incarceration. Members weren’t afraid to get their hands dirty at the Center for Children & Young Adults, where they planted edible plants to help sustain food production.
The spirit of giving continued as over 200 lunches were packed for The Table on Delk, a ministry supporting at-risk homeless women and children living in hotels on Delk Road. Across town, local business owner and Rotary member Butch Carter hosted a mobile blood drive at Honest-1 Auto Care, providing a vital way for citizens to get involved.
After a productive morning, the group gathered for a celebratory lunch to reflect on their collective efforts. “Seeing our members out in the community—beautifying parks, supporting local nonprofits, and lending a hand wherever it was needed—was a wonderful success,” said President Liz Myers. “It’s a perfect reminder of what Service Above Self really means.” As the club looks forward to making this an annual tradition, their work powerfully demonstrates that when dedicated people unite, even a small group can create a lasting and meaningful impact..
Community members come together to lend a helping hand during a day filled with meaningful acts of service and volunteerism.
Rotary volunteers roll up their sleeves to help build and repair homes—turning hard work into hope for local families. Volunteers assembling lunches with care ensuring neighbors in need feel supported.

EVERYONE LOVES PUPPIES!
Puppies are adorable and fun, but they are not for the faint of heart. They take some work.
One of the most important things you can do to support your puppy is to “socialize” them.
There is often a misconception about socialization. Many people assume it means saying “hi” to everyone your puppy sees. Socialization is more complex than this. It equally important for your puppy to learn to be calm when the neighbor walks by with their dog.
Proper socialization helps your puppy become more comfortable in our human world. Giving your puppy positive and safe experiences with the world around them helps build confidence and teaches them to be calm with new people, animals, sights, sounds, and situations. It builds resilience. It helps to mitigate potential behavior concerns in the future.
My puppy package is intended to help your puppy grow into the BEST dog they can be! My goal is to help your
puppy become a happy, confident, and calm dog. Proper socialization is a part of this.
I am committed to a force free, positive reinforcement approach which helps your puppy learn and builds a strong relationship built on trust and communication.
I am a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA), a Certified Dog Parkour Instructor and Evaluator with the IDPKA, and a member of the Pet Professional Guild and the APDT.
I provide individualized training for puppies and dogs in the East Cobb/Marietta area.
I offer a 10% discount on all services for clients who have recently adopted their puppy or dog from a shelter, the Humane Society, or a reputable rescue organization. Bring out the BEST in your dog, with Best in Dog!

DO YOU WANT TO TAKE YOUR FITNESS TO A NEW LEVEL? TRY SOMATIC YOGA.
By Rachel Friedman, MSW, E-RYT 500, YACEP
In the ever-changing world of health and fitness, the definition of “wellness” is evolving. Focusing exclusively on strength, endurance, or even flexibility is not all our body needs. Today, we need a more holistic experience—one that not only changes how we look, but also how we feel. There is a great deal of research around the physical benefits of yoga, did you know there are also significant mental benefits? Learn more about how somatic yoga is like doing therapy and exercise together.
WHAT IS SOMATIC YOGA?
“Somatic” comes from the Greek word soma, meaning “the living body in its wholeness.” Somatic healing involves engaging the body towards a mental and emotional balance. It moves us away from the conventional “fix your body” model and into a “listen to your body” model.
Somatic yoga involves flow, movement and strength-building, but it also entails breathwork, sensory awareness, mindful movement, and nervous system education. These practices empower you to feel rather than just function—to become aware of how stress and lifestyle patterns are showing up in your body and to shift that into something more positive.
HOW DOES YOGA HELP HOW I FEEL?
The nervous system is our body’s command center for stress, movement, healing, and recovery.
Most exercise is focused on the mechanics of the body: muscles, bones, and movements. But our workouts aren’t focusing on the regulation of emotional and physiological stress that are now recognized as contributors to the success or failure of our fitness goals.
We are all carrying stress, anxiety, trauma, or burnout. Without tools to regulate our nervous systems, even the most well-designed training plan can fall short. This is where yoga comes in. It gives us the ability to shift out of chronic stress and into a state of safety and presence—making fitness not only more effective, but also more sustainable for the long-term. How do I know if Somatic Yoga is right for me?
As a program created by a clinical social worker with decades of experience in yoga and somatic therapy, every tool is rooted in neuroscience, physiology, and psychology. Healing, after all, is a personal, soulful journey. Somatic yoga is mindful and heart-centered, it honors the full spectrum of what it means to be human. It’s a call to start practicing yoga or to elevate your practice, expand your impact, and be part of a holistic experience for your fitness.
Soma Power Yoga in East Cobb has become a safe space to embrace your inner yogi. This isn’t just for those interested in enhancing their yoga skills, it is also for people seeking a new opportunity to balance their mental and physical health. There is no judgement, there is laughter, peace and community with every class. Learn more here: somapoweryoga. com/classes.
Mom, wife, and serial entrepreneur, I’m an MSW, somatic therapist, yogi, and life coach dedicated to helping others heal through mindbody integration. Owner of Soma Power Yoga and The Soma School, I guide students toward strength, authenticity, and possibility.

More than just a race, the Gobble Jog benefits MUST Ministries, a local nonprofit providing meals, shelter, job-readiness and support services to families in need.
It’s become a community favorite—a heart-warming way to start Thanksgiving morning with purpose and
joy. Grab your family, don your best turkey gear, and join the flock this November for a run (or walk) that truly makes a difference!
HOW TO REGISTER
Visit the official registration site (via RunSignUp or MUST Ministries’ event page) to select your distance and register online. mustministries.org/events/gobble-jog

SPARKLE SUCCESS STORY
By Ginger Markert-Brusa
In 2021, Heather lost her son. She was determined to help others, but first she had to help herself.
Heather Durham joined Sparkle Wellness in 2022 to become the best version of herself for her family and be a light to others. Heather‘s son, Shawn, struggled with opiate addiction and lost his life in 2021 from fentanyl poisoning. It is important to her to raise awareness of this horrible disease and reduce the shame and stigma associated with it for the victims and their families. Realizing life on earth is short, she knew she needed the support and accountability of like-minded people. Heather believed the Sparkle community shines brightest when they serve others, and that she would never be alone because support is at the heart of everything they do.
But to get there, she had to be spiritually, mentally, and physically healthy. Having strong faith helped. Heather even pushed her limits by joining a handbell choir without knowing how to read a note of music.
Getting started and changing her mindset were the most difficult. Heather regularly loses motivation, which is why mindset is most important. She changed her eating habits by practicing portion control. She no longer mindlessly snacks and now tracks her food as fuel. She eats roasted vegetables for snacks and fruit for dessert.
Heather’s first step was to simply show up to Sparkle Wellness, the gym, or the park. When you show up for something, you are likely to stay and at least do something.
Her second step was putting all her new health knowledge into practice, which takes time. She cleaned out the pantry and refrigerator and replaced what was there with foods she loves and that love her back.
The third step was creating a word for 2025, which is “Continue.” She continues to never give up on health and wellness. To date, Heather has lost 23 pounds and continues to meet her goal.
Heather began to exercise six days a week with one sacred rest day weekly. Her routine is fluid based on her goals at the time. If she is training for a race, she runs several times a week and adds stretch and balance where she can. She is currently focused on strength training, but loves to play tennis, work in the garden, swim, and explore new places while hiking or walking.
Before After
Through faith, community, and a renewed focus on wellness, Heather Durham has rebuilt her strength and spirit—continuing her journey toward health and healing in honor of her son.
Heather‘s biggest triumph was completing the Marine Corps Marathon in 2024. It taught her discipline that she could apply to any aspect of her life. She spent many miles training while thinking of Shawn. Heather has learned that grief is pure love and chooses to grieve with hope.
Heather‘s biggest challenges were learning to embrace ups and downs and staying focused. Injuries and bad food choices happen, but she has learned to adjust and “Continue.”
After joining Sparkle, the most significant change is that she feels more like herself than she has in a very long time and is comfortable in her bones and skin. She is in a much better place to be of service to others.
If you know someone who has lost a child to a drug overdose/fentanyl poisoning, Heather recommends a Facebook Group called #NotInVain.
Spring registration for Sparkle begins soon. For information on Sparkle Wellness, contact Jacynta Harb at www.sparkleanewyou.com or call 404-242-5062.
SANTA’S ELVES FOR SENIORS
The holidays are a time for warmth and togetherness, but for many local seniors, it can be a lonely and challenging season. You have the power to change that!
WHAT IS SANTA’S ELVES FOR SENIORS?
Santa’s Elves for Seniors is a program from Cobb County Senior Services dedicated to ensuring every senior in our community feels remembered and cared for during the holidays. By joining us, you can help bring a smile and a moment of joy to someone who truly needs it.
HOW YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
We need volunteers to “adopt” a senior for the holidays. The seniors in this program are age 55 or older, facing limited income, or spending the holidays alone.
HERE’S HOW EASY IT IS TO BECOME A SANTA’S ELF:
Receive a Wish List: You’ll be provided with a local senior’s wish list containing 3–5 small gift ideas.
Shop: You are encouraged to shop within a budget of up to $50. Please note: you are not expected to buy everything on the list, just what feels right for you.
Drop-Off: We’ll send you detailed drop-off instructions. Our staff will then take care of the rest, ensuring all gifts are safely delivered to the seniors in the first couple of weeks of December.

It’s such a basic question, but one that most businesses struggle to answer … much less communicate clearly. But in today’s age of endless marketing messages competing for a very short attention span, clearly communicating your “story” is an absolute imperative. Articulating and embracing your brand story is what makes it happen.
