This September we are celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the attack on the Twin Towers in New York City. Ten years ago airplanes flew into these buildings, the Pentagon and crashed in western Pennsylvania in an unprovoked attack on innocent citizens. This citizen will NOT forget. I hope you take some time on September 11th to remember and pray for the families of the victims and brave first responders who lost their lives on this fatefull day in American history. I am pleased to honor our first responders on this months cover with the Point Pleasant Fire Fire Company and would like to personally thank Chief Fire Marshal Daniel Mulligan and his men for taking the time and helping out with the photo shoot. September also marks the end of summer and what a hot summer it was. I believe that there were more days over 100º than I care to remember. There was also a lot of rainy weekends causing havoc on bike event attendance. Keep checking our calendar of events on our website and when there’s a rain date schedule we will try to post it as we are notified. The last few months on our website have also shown an increase in activity as we have been getting 1,000,000 hits a month recently. This means that more of you are going to our site for our calendar of events and the East Coast Biker Online magazine, our totally web-based publication. Thank you so much for your support. Publishing a magazine means I’m always looking two to three months ahead. As I write this editorial it’s August 15th and this is the last thing I do before I send the magazine to the printer, so I’m already thinking October and November. As we enter 2012 we will be celbrating our 10th Anniversary and I’m working on some ideas to celebrate. It has been an amazing ten years of meeting our publication deadline every month to get our magazine in circulation before the published month. Ten years of photo shoots and bike events and meeting a lot of really great people. With your continued support I’m looking forward to the next ten years to be even better. Party With The Jersey Devil Doing it Old School Style Story & Photos by Norm Keller

The effort that goes into putting together a first year event can be a little bit overwhelming, as “Pappa” Jeff Campbell will tell you. “I want to put together an old school style party where you can come and just have a lot of fun” is what he told Jeff told me. Jeff began working on promoting the Party with the Jersey Devil last November when I ran into him at the Philadelphia Toy Run already handing out flyers for an event that was to be held in July. “You have to get out the word” he told me as he continued with his work. He would be found at motorcycle events all over the tri-state area for the next eight months promoting his event.

All of his hard work paid off this past July when the Party took place at the fair grounds located outside of Millville, NJ. This event included bike games, vendors, camping, some really awesome bands and a whole lot of fun and entertainment over the weekend. Oh, and did I mention girls? There were plenty of girls on and off stage showing thier “stuff”. And what is a party without cake, Jeff had a local baker put together some cakes to honor the armed services as well as a Jersey Devil cake. Everyone enjoyed a slice and had a great time. On Saturday afternoon there were bike games and a special presentation by a drum and bagpipe group while the Rigor Mortis Revue, a burlesque show, was on hand with their own special entertainment. Insane Clowns entertained in the evening with their Coney Island style of humor and fun while the Grim Reaper & a rather distressed Gumby would walk the grounds in the afternoon adding to the colorful atmosphere. Without missing a beat, Jeff has already started on next year’s event which should prove to be even bigger and better. For a first year bike event I definitely give the Party with the Jersey Devil a HUGE thumbs up and I WILL be there in 2012 ... I hope see you there.

This year’s ride was the 2nd Annual charity event & concert to promote SIDS awareness in loving memory of Caleb Jonathan Warke. The annual charity event is held at the Kutztown Rod and Gun Club in Kutztown PA featuring music, food, silent auction, hot bike contest, a 50/50 raffle and tons of fun! The weather could not have been more beautiful for this event. There was clear skies and smooth sailing all the way. The poker run was 37.5 miles of excellent country views as far as the eye could see. We went on roads we knew existed and some new ones too, it was awesome! Stops included: TC’s Food & Spirits, the Kempton Hotel, CJ Hummmel’s and the Kutztown Fraternal Order of Eagles. At each stop we received a bead to place on our large safety pin that we were given at sign up and by the end of the poker ride your pin spelled out “CALEB”. There were lots of friendly and caring people on this ride and I highly suggest everyone mark their calendar for next year’s event. It was a very well thought out event with its own board of directors behind the scenes and watching over all the events of the day. There were four pigs that were roasted to feed the hungry riders while three bands played all day. Jeremiah James, the father of Caleb and lead singer for the band Jeremiah were playing as well as The Tandem Band and The Wallace Band. This location is next to a creek and it just couldn’t be a better location for an event of its kind. Three years ago the Warke family experienced one the worst tragedies a family could ever endure. On April 18, 2008 they lost their three month old son Caleb Jonathan to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. In loving memory of Caleb the Warke family & friends sponsor this motorcycle and poker run to benefit SIDS awareness & prevention. Jersey Girls Meet Medusa Metal and time create a force of nature Story by Loretta Jackson, photos by Norm Keller

This month’s featured motorcycle, “Medusa,” is a work of art and a work of the heart. It was built pretty much out of nothing but passion and pride by Dennis of Sick Choppers in Point Pleasant, New Jersey. Dennis taught himself to weld and mastered other bike-building skills at an early age. Now, with a wife and two stepchildren in his corner, he constantly is supported with enthusiasm, patience and plenty of good will — even on late nights when thoughts of a hot supper are supplanted by his desire to finish one last detail on the bike in progress. Hundreds of hours went into this month’s featured motorcycle. “On the day of the shoot, when the ladies were smiling and the firemen stood behind the bike, I choked up. It was a combination of pride for what I had built and respect for these brave men — guys who too often have given their lives to save others, as so many of their brothers did on 9-11.” Sometimes, it’s a struggle to do what you love, added Dennis, who admits he often stretches his resources to produce his masterpieces. He fabricates parts to sell, takes on Harley service and repairs, auctions fenders and tanks online and finds creative ways to fund his custom builds. He does what he loves. Dennis credits a longtime associate, D.J. at American Cycles in Clarksburg, New Jersey, for assistance when special tools or shop machinery was needed to complete some tricky task on the Sick Choppers bike. The man, D.J., is well respected as one of the godfathers of Harley drag racing and a craftsman beyond compare in his own rite. Another source of help to Dennis while building “Medusa,” was Cory of Bratton’s Custom Werkz in Erie, Pennsylvania. Cory contributed some fine metal sculpting work and other details on the bike. This month’s featured Sick Choppers bike started with a flea-market find — a rigid, used frame and an idea. Dennis cut the frame in half behind the transmission and stretched the rear wheel back 10-inches. He raised the axle tubes and fabricated a rear tail-dragger fender to simulate old hot rod cars or Caddies. Then, he welded two fenders together, cut open an existing gas tank and opened the tank up seven inches. The move made the gas tank a lot fatter and added a sexy curve to it. Then, he stretched the rear of the gas tank to accommodate the backbone, fabricated all the seat pans and incorporated a welded-on sissy-bar which is permanently attached to the frame. He handcrafted a side-mount license plate holder and steel plated the whole frame for reinforcement. He also fabricated all the mounts for exhaust, oil tank, and handcrafted extra parts such as a devil head on the handlebars. “I wanted to push the headlight out really far, like the old Springers,” said Dennis. “Orange County Choppers provided me with handlebar halves. I modified them and made the bars, custom oil tank and other parts. I call the bike ‘Medusa,’ the devil lady with snakes for hair. The bike fought me the whole way during fabrication. That’s how she got the name.” The one enhancement needed to beautify even more the motorcycle featured in this month’s East Coast Biker magazine was the addition of a bevy of patriotic beauties, women who love their country and all those who protect its citizens. The call was answered by the ladies featured here — members of an elite modeling firm, Local NJ Hotties. Mary Liszewski, owner of the agency, launched the business online in 2008. Ride of Pride

It all started back in 2006 when Gerry Ford, President of McKean County American Legion Riders, was asked if he could round up 300 motorcycles together to escort the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Moving Wall into Smithport, PA. The word spread and on the day that the Moving Wall arrived there was about 3,400 motorcycles waiting to provide escort. What an awesome sight! The event renewed the communities’ patriotic stance and was a reminder of those who have made the greatest sacrifice for our freedom. In 2007 began the “Ride of Pride”. This year’s ride consisted of 50 bikes riding a 120 mile scenic ride with five stops along the way including a ceremony held at Hamlin Park to honor our veterans were a few speeches were spoken. There were flags flying and all of the bikes were parked in a row, which provided a great backdrop. I will never forget the gun with the bayonet stuck in the ground and a helmet setting on top with a pair of boots sitting on the ground ... that pretty much said it all. After the ceremony we rode to our final stop ending at the Bucktail Post 138 American Legion where we had a delicious dinner. I enjoyed this ride very much and I hope to be able to attend it next year.

I simply want to share with you the trip I just experienced wherein my wife and I spent a week traveling through Italy. For those of you who have had an opportunity to visit Italy you know what a beautiful country it is and for those who may have an opportunity to go, I would encourage you to do so. To tour the Vatican, see the Sistine Chapel and walk through the coliseum is an experience that I will never forget. What amazed me most about the Vatican was the sheer amount of artwork and of course the paintings by Michelangelo. These paintings need to be seen to be fully appreciated.

The other aspect that I found amazing was the unbelievable number of motor-scooters. In both Florence and Rome, there were at least as many scooters as there were cars, however, surprisingly few motorcycles of any make or model. Virtually every street has scooters parked side-by-side in every possible spot. Unfortunately, I am not sure there are any rules of the road in Rome or Florence with the exception of, if it appears as though you can squeeze your car or scooter into a space to beat out the vehicle next to you, you do it! I don’t think I would ever attempt to drive a car or motorcycle in these cities. On a more relevant topic, I am a member of a chat-room called “Biker or Not” which is a social networking website for Bikers. I have found some very relevant information on this site that would be of benefit to many of you. Most recently there was a discussion about insurance and the appropriate price to pay. Some were complaining they were paying too much, and some were bragging about how little they were paying. However, I failed to read any discussion about the type of coverage one should have and the importance of the coverage. It seemed that most were concerned simply with the cost. For those of you who read my columns on a regular basis, you know that I am a huge advocate of purchasing as much insurance for your motorcycle that you can reasonably afford. Although nobody likes to pay insurance premiums, if you are going to spend a couple of hundred dollars for insurance you might as well spend a few bucks more and make sure that you have the coverage you need if and when you ever need it. So as part of this discussion, I put in my two cents stating that while price is always important, the types and limits of coverage you purchase should be the primary concern when purchasing motorcycle, or any other, insurance. I am not going to go into the specifics of coverages in this column as I have stated my preferences many times before, however, I want to reiterate that when purchasing new motorcycle insurance, or switching companies, the price of the coverage should NEVER be your primary factor. Given the tough economic times, every one is looking to save money but the cost difference between a minimal policy and a policy that provides decent coverage, can often be as little as $4-$8.00 a month. For many bikers that ride motorcycles costing $10-$25,000, an extra $4-$8 dollars a month shouldn’t put too much of a dent in anyone’s wallet. July was HOT in the tri-state area, but there were places that you could beat the heat. Many escaped to New Jersey shore towns to enjoy cool ocean breezes. Riding along shady roads near rivers or streams was another way to find some cool air. Yet when temperatures hit the one-hundred degree mark, many had to leave their bikes in the garage. Wellsboro, PA is a popular destination for tri-state riders, it is a cool respite from the summer heat especially when my husband and I took our bicycle vacation there from July 2-9. The rolling mountains and state forests provided cool back roads especially the twists and turns of PA 144, Route 660 to Pennsylvania’s Grand Canyon, and Route 6 which is famous for its scenic views and interesting towns across northern Pennsylvania. Staying in Wellsboro was like time traveling back to the fifties where the Wellsboro Diner and movie theater on Main Streets with its reconstructed electric gas lights provide recollections of the prosperous fifties. However, this year as we rode along Pine Creek’s bicycle trail, we saw more rattlesnakes than ever before slithering in front of our bikes or rattling on each side of the trail. July’s heat was record breaking, but despite cancellations, many events still took place in the tri-state area. The annual Carlisle Bike Fest took place on July 22-24 despite a heat index of over one hundred degrees. Riders came from all over Pennsylvania and surrounding states to the Carlisle Fairgrounds where they were able to see stunt riders perform, listen to live music and view the bikes after some shopping at the many vendors. Excessive heat did not stop the New Castle County ABATE from holding its Fifteenth Annual Poker Run on July 23rd. Riders registered at the Boston Market on Kirkwood Highway in Wilmington, De from 10:00 a.m. to noon, then spent the afternoon enjoying a pig roast and bike games which took place at the VFW 833 in Port Penn Delaware. Biker Sunday took place at a tent erected near Gap Community Church on July 17th where area riders heard a short message then took a two hour ride around the Lancaster area. When they returned to Gap, they were treated to a lunch and live music. The church used any donations to help area youngsters by supporting the Factory Youth Center, a local non-profit organization. Tri State HOG members took several rides in the hot weather. Ed Montgomery led his “Hump” riders to the Shady Maple restaurant near Morgantown, PA for breakfast on July 13th. Hike Hagan invited the club to join his family for a ride to the Camel Back ski area’s summer water park on Sunday July 17th. On the morning of July 4th Bob Daniels led a group from Media, PA to participate in Glenolden and Norwood’s annual Fourth of July parades. Charlie Dresden, the chapter’s road captain organized at ride to the Carlisle Bike Fest on July 16th which ended up being canceled due to the extreme heat. The next Saturday he led a group of members from Hannum’s Harley-Davidson in Chadds Ford to the Conowingo Dam in Maryland to look for bald eagles. He also led a ride to Lancaster Harley-Davidson on the morning of July 2nd from the Kennett Square WAWA on Route 1 near Longwood Gardens. The heat affected the Keystone Chapter of Women on Wheels’ ride schedule. Julianne Yarwood, The Club’s Director, planned a re-scheduled ride to Bill’s Bike Barn on July 23rd which had to be cancelled again due to temperatures close to 100 degrees. Moe Moyer, the newsletter editor, was able to lead the group to the Crayola Factory in Allentown, PA after the monthly meeting at Smaltz’s Harley-Davidson in Eagle, PA

It was almost ten years ago when I started printing a news letter called the E. Penn Biker, which quickly became the beginnings of the E. Penn Biker Magazine which later, in 2008, became the East Coast Biker magazine. You can imagine my surprise when Russell Smith (right) told me to stop by his office because he “Had something” for me. When I dropped off the August issue with Russ he presented me with two binders complete with every issue of the magazine since the early days. Each month he had been placing the magazine in the binder as a record of how it has changed over the years. We will be bringing the binders with us to Lansdale Bike Night so if you would like to browse through the past issue and possibly find yourself please stop by and check us out.
