As I stated on the cover of this month’s issue, “We’re all Irish one day a year!” So have a Happy St. Patrick’s Day and enjoy your corned beef and cabbage (I always do), your green beer and don’t forget to wear something green to show your inner Irish. To me, March always signals the beginning of the ride season. Our bikes have been tethered to a battery tender in our garage for several months now and waiting to break free. Even with the snow still on the ground as I write this editorial I often see some brave riders bundled up and getting in some ride time. One thing you have to remember is that if you do take your bike out in cold weather the tires will be harder than normal and may cause you go into a skid in corners. So take care and bundle up if you’re riding, temperatures below 60 can feel a lot colder at 45mph or higher. The Northeast Motorcycle Expo is coming back to the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, PA on March 19&20, I hope to see you there. This year Kev Marv Productions is bringing a lot more entertainment with the Half Pint Brawlers, Finnegan’s Circus, bike builders, vendors and more. You never know who will show up, last year brought a lot of unannounced celebrities so you won’t want to miss it. For more information visit their website www.kevmarv.com where you can download a $2.00 discount coupon. Another thing you might want to do is get your bike detailed. I’m calling Skinny Kag’s to detail my bike before I take it out. Nothing feels better than having a clean bike that first time you take it out for a ride. Give him a call at 610-888-0263 and see what he can do for your ride. This issue is off to the printer and I’ll begin working on the East Coast Biker Online edition. If you haven’t checked out our online edition yet, you should! Beginning this month the print edition will be uploaded to our website around the 15th and the online edition will be uploaded, as always, on the first of the month. We’re getting so many stories for the East Coast Biker Online magazine that I’ve made the decision to put two copies of the magazine on the web now so go there and check it out.

The Guardian Knights Help Santa Support the Troops Story & photos submitted by the Guardian Knights

The Guardian Knights, a Law Enforcement based MC based in Harrisburg PA, helped spread holiday cheer for some of our men and women in uniform this past Christmas. On December 11 and 12, 2010 The GKMC joined with the FRG (Family Readiness Group) for the 28th ID, to provide Christmas parties for the troops and their families. The fun began on Saturday with an opportunity for the members of the GKMC to meet the soldiers and their families and share a meal. This was a rare opportunity for them to be able to meet face to face with some of the people who a year before had benefitted from the club’s Operation SOS project which ships packages to deployed PA National Guard and Reserve troops.

with Santa and receive a gift.

In 2009 these same troops were deployed in Iraq and received packages from Operation SOS. The party culminated with Santas arrival on his motorcycle at the Armory located in nearby Hershey. He was accompanied by a helper and a number of GKMC members. Each child had the chance to meet

On Sunday a second party was held at the unit headquarters at Fort Indiantown Gap for the remaining members of the unit. Unfortunately heavy rains and cold temperatures prevented Santa from being able to make his entrance on his bike. Regardless of how he arrived, the kids were just as excited to see him. At the end of the day the unit commander presented the members of the GKMC with his personal challenge coin, an honor not given lightly. The FRG also honored the GKMC with a plaque, expressing their thanks for the support of the troops and their families.

Santa & Helper arrive on bikes.

The GKMC provided funds to help with the meals as well as the visit from Santa and gifts for 200 children of these soldiers. Through generous donations of the GKMC members and the employees of Versatile Inc. funds were raised to support these parties for the second year in a row. The GKMC has built a reputation in the community for support of law enforcement causes and support of our troops. A Group photo provided a memory for all who participated.

GWTA PA-Y Hosts Meals with a Purpose Story & photos submitted by Peggy Kratz

Who doesn’t enjoy a great family style meal? Many came out to eat hearty and at the same time promote a worthy cause. The Franconia Heritage Restaurant provides a unique community benefit… Meals With a Purpose… The PURPOSE is to make a fund raising opportunity available to local organizations for the betterment of the community. Meals with a Purpose works like this… the restaurant prepares the food… the sponsoring organization, Chapter Y, supplies the manpower to set tables, serve family style dinner and beverages, and clear the tables for four hours. A portion of the cost of each meal is donated to Chapter Y’s chosen charity which is the Indian Creek Foundation in Souderton, PA. At a recent meeting, PA-Y members presented an Appreciation plaque to Janet Pesini, the Banquet Coordinator of the Franconia Heritage Restaurant, recognizing their community service. At the same time, PA-Y was also pleased to present Heather Kennedy, the Development Coordinator for Indian Creek Foundation, with a $374.80 donation. The Indian Creek Foundation provides opportunities for people with developmental disabilities to live and enrich their community while meeting their vocational, family, personal and spiritual needs from birth to death, serving 600 people in the Bucks and Montgomery County areas. This was truly a WIN-WIN deal… a local business working with a local motorcycle club to help the less fortunate in their community. Gold Wing Touring Association (GWTA) is an international not-forprofit organization of touring motorcyclists, predominantly Gold Wings but not exclusively. We identify ourselves with the Gold Wing but are neither affiliated with nor receive funding from the manufacturer. GWTA is owned and operated by its members. Editors Note: When you’re thinking of a resturaunt for your next meeting or just going out to eat, we recommend you support the Franconia Heritage Resturaunt and tell them that you read about their Meals With A Purpose in the East Coast Biker magazine.

by Lee D. Gaber, Esquire 1-888-CYCLE-LAW (1-888-292-5352) LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com All I can say is after this winter …. Thank GOD it’s March! Hopefully we will get a few nice days to begin the riding season. Our first event is already scheduled, will be a appearing at the “Motorcycle Extravaganza” taking place at the Allentown Fairgrounds on March 19th and 20th. As always, I invite you to stop by with any questions, or just to say hello!

1-888-CYCLE-LAW LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com www.cycleattorney.com

Although discussed in prior columns, lately I have been repeatedly asked; “If I am involved in an accident that is 100% the other persons fault why am I, or my insurance company, responsible for the medical bills?” Although I know the answer and the reason behind it, every time I respond to this question, the answer seems to make less sense to me and more often than not, it never makes sense to the injured party.

The simple answer is that most states are “No-Fault” states, which literally means that no matter who is at fault, the injured party is responsible for their own medical bills. Although this has long been the law, many people, including some doctor’s offices, assume that the other insurance company will pay. Occasionally, the other insurance company may even say they will, however, this rarely, if ever occurs and merely gives false hope to the victim of the accident. In most automobile cases the system works pretty well because all motorists in PA, DE and NJ are required to have medical benefits on their auto policies, which will pay at least $5,000.00 toward medical bills. However, in PA and NJ, most motorcycle policies do not provide medical coverage and therefore, if you have private health insurance, they will pay your medical bills. Most DE policies include $15,000.00 in combination benefits that may be used to pay for medical bills. I have learned over twenty years worth of discussions that no matter how many times I explain this to clients, potential clients, readers etc., it is a very bitter pill to swallow if you’re involved in a motorcycle accident, due to no fault of your own and you have neither medical coverage on your motorcycle policy nor any private health insurance. In that case, before you can blink an eye, the medical bills start coming in fast and furious followed by collection notices. In a situation like this, the only way to force the other side to pay your medical bills, is to make a claim and either settle it quickly, or immediately file suit and litigate the claim. The problem with both of these solutions, is that most insurance companies don’t move as fast as we would like them to, and meanwhile the injured victim begins getting collection notices and marks against them on their credit report. Once this process begins, the only way to protect yourself is to immediately arrange payment plans and/or speak with an attorney who may be able to convince the medical providers to accept letters of protection, which asks the providers to hold up on any collection efforts until the claim is resolved. However, this needs to be accomplished quickly because once these matters end up in collection they automatically get reported to the credit agencies and undoing that is much more difficult than preventing it from happening in the first place. Given the above, if you find yourself in this situation, do not get lolled into a false sense of security because the other insurance company has told you they will cover your medical bills. While they may in the long term, it only happens in the rarest of circumstances. Otherwise I suggest that you contact a competent lawyer to make sure that you don’t find yourself being victimized twice as a result of the negligent actions of another. I hope you find this information informative and if you would like additional information on this topic, or any other, I can always be reached at LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com or 1-888-CYCLE-LAW (1-888-292-5352).

Sincerely, LEE D. GABER, Esquire The one and only, “Cycle Attorney”

Snow was everywhere in the tri-state area in January & February. Riders could get on their bikes and ride for only a few hours as temperatures rarely went up into the forties. In January each day was either frosty cold or we were buried under snow so that many bikes have stayed in the garage since November. Hot chili tasted good on the cold morning of January 22nd when Smaltz’s Harley-Davidson held its annual chili competition with their Ninth Annual Red Hot Chili Cook-Off that took. Over ten varieties of chili were free to be sampled, although donations could be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Besides a good meal, there was an opportunity to try Gatorskins thermal wear designed to provide warmth without electric wires. The Blue Comet Motorcycle Club was on hand, offering chances to win a 2011 Harley. At 3:00pm the people’s choice vote determined the winning concoction. Jack Tinney took the $75.00 first place prize while Tracy Glisffon earned $50.00 for the second place award and Marie Pino took $25.00 for third place. On New Year’s Day, the cold morning did not stop two couples and a member of Chapter A of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association from riding their bikes to meet up with two other couples in their cars at the WAWA in Skippack, PA. Bob Patton, the newsletter editor, reported that the group then rode to the Pennsburg Diner in Pennsburg, PA for some welcome food and hospitality. Members of the Keystone Chapter of Women on Wheels developed their billiard skills after the January meeting that was held at Smaltz’s Harley-Davidson in Eagle, PA. After the meeting, the group had a late breakfast at Nudy’s in Frazer, PA then went next door to play pool at Main Line Billiards. Marilyn Waxberg, the Assistant Chapter Director, stated that Mike, one of the owners of Main Line Billiards, made sure the group of nine had adjoining tables and gave each person a frequent player’s card. Area riders did find some days to combat PMS, parked motorcycle syndrome, during January like attending the Jersey Giant two day motorcycle swap meet and bike show at the Garden State Exhibit Center in Somerset, NJ on January 8th and 9th. Yet the battle continued as the snow and freezing temperatures showed no signs of leaving the tri-state area.

Traveling Around Sharing photos with our readers Photos submitted by Don Rothstein

Working from your home can be a good thing, but ocassionally you want to get away from your “office” and get out and meet some people. From time to time I have lunch at the local Wendy’s in the Lansdale area and often find Don Rothstein and his friends from the Blue Comet MC sharing some time together. Recently Don told me of his trip to Biketoberfest in Daytona, Florida and some of the placed he and his friends visited along the way. I told him that it sounded like a great trip and why not share some of your photos with our readers ... And he did.

Don Rothstein

So here we have some photos that he later sent me of his recent trip to Florida and a few places along the way. Of course, while you’re at one of the largest bike events in the country you have to check out some of the greatest custom bikes to be seen. I hope you enjoy these photos and we’d like to share some of your photos with our readers too. Contact us to send some photos and a story of where you were. We want to see yo in the East Coast Biker magazine! Don Rothstein with Eddie Trotta
