ALL-REGION HONORS ANNOUNCED AT DHS BY: DAKOTA THOMAS AND KELLI COLLINS, DHS EAST STUDENTS

The Dardanelle music program is a celebrated one: the Scarlet Regiment is the “Pride of Yell County” and year-in, year-out winners of numerous competitions and awards. However, the Dark Horse of the Dardanelle School District is the choir program. This year the Dardanelle High School Choir has gone above and beyond in their All-Region competitions. Between all the choirs, ranging from seventh to twelfth grade, there were a total of ten All-Region qualifiers. All the choir members auditioning for All-Region honors practiced for many extra hours in order to learn the especially difficult music required for auditions. (Teresa Balloun, Dardanelle Choir Director, affirms their hard work: “I’m really proud of our All-Region students. They put in a lot of hard work learning their music.”) They then endured an entire Saturday at the Russellville Performing Arts Center, waiting throughout the morning for their time. The judges of the competition knew them solely as a number and the tryouts were conducted blindly, so that winners were determined by vocal performance only. All choir members who made All-Region participated in concerts in early November according to their placements. Junior High All-Region members included seventh-grader Karly-Beth Backer, eighth-graders Cortney Gadberry and Clayton Sparks, and several freshmen: Cheyanna Wester, Jacklynn Stout, Rhiannon Swaim, Elesha Yarbrough, and Jason Sharp. Senior High All-Region members included Junior Mary Kathryn Cruse and Senior Alex Clark. Cruse was an All-Region member each year of Junior Choir (7th-9th), and this is her first year to return to the ranks as a Senior High vocalist. In Senior High All-Region, the top 19 vocalists of each district are eligible to compete for All-State honors; Clark, a returning All-Region member, placed First Chair, which qualifies her for theFebruary 7 tryouts. If she attains All-State honors, then she will participate in the State Music Conference February 19-22. “I’m extremely proud of our choir, and happy to be able to try out for All-State, too,” says Clark. Alongside her already prestigious success, Alex had an audition for a scholarship into the UCA Choir the afternoon of Friday, January 24; the afternoon of Sunday, January 26, she auditioned for an ACS Scholarship. Ms. Balloun and the Dardanelle Choirs have enjoyed great success this school year. With ten All-Region members and an All-State qualifier, they truly exemplify the Lizard Spirit of determination and motivation. Ms. Balloun, in reference to her honored students, attests: “The experience they received in performing with the All-Region Choir makes them better musicians when they come back to school.” Dardanelle High School is extremely proud of our Choir program’s success.

The Student Council will sponsor this effort from February 10th through February 14th. We send home 150 backpacks for younger students each Friday. Much of the food is supplied by First Baptist Church and corporate helpers like Wal-Mart and Tyson. There is, always, a shortfall. Without the children would be hungry over the weekend. We need healthful foods, that a six year old can open and prepare. Please give to this cause. Collection point is on the Lizard in the outer lobby.

Dardanelle High School is having our own COLLEGE GOAL MONDAY! At 6 p.m. on Monday, March 3rd, cafeteria and library, highly qualified college admissions officers will help you AND YOUR PARENT get your applications finished. Plan to be here.

CAPS BY: DAKOTA THOMAS AND KELLI COLLINS, DHS EAST STUDENTS CAPS is a mandated activity that Arkansas High Schools must employ. Career Action Planning is a counseling technique for high school students in which the advisor and the student consider (1)the student’s career choice, (2)where the student is in achieving his career goals, (3)and formulate a plan for moving toward those goals during the rest of the high school career.

Dardanelle High Teachers will be trained in the techniques of CAPS during professional development work on January 5 th. Between that day and CAPS Conferences in February students and advisors will formulate the CAPS plan. In midFebruary, all students, advisors, and parents will meet together to share the student’s plan. “CAPS stretches the advisor’s counseling skills. The advisor must use concrete data to help the student set goals. Then both advisor and student must confront the parents. It is the most important activity for advisory and, in large part, the very reason for the advisory program at Dardanelle High School,” comments Principal Marcia Lawrence. The advisory program was started at DHS some thirty years ago. In fact ,Dardanelle High School had the first high school advisory program in Arkansas, and the concept has been widely copied throughout the state. Every year, at this time, CAPS makes advisory extremely important at Dardanelle High. Parents are encouraged to
