The Lizard’s Tale 2014 DARDANELLE BETA SUCCESS By Dakota Thomas and Kelli Collins, DHS EAST

Inside this issue:

The National Beta Club is a far-reaching organization with numerous chapters throughout the state; it is an honors society for elementary and secondary students dedicated to “promot[ing] the ideals of academic achievement, character, service, and leadership” among its diverse members, as Beta’s mission statement says. Dardanelle High School is a long-time member of the organization with an ever-growing number of academically and otherwise accomplished students who make it into the ranks of the society.

The Dardanelle Beta Club is dedicated to helping the community: its members are required to contribute two hours of community service per semester as a component of basic Beta criteria. A school-wide effort including all students is the DHS Goes Green Recycling program, which was created as a collaborative effort between DHS EAST and Beta in August 2010. In its fourth school year, the recycling program allows all Beta members an easily accessible opportunity to accomplish their required service hours, and also provides a hugely environmentallyfriendly approach to the disposal of paper waste at Dardanelle High. Each year, Arkansas Beta hosts the State Convention at the Hot Springs Convention Center in late January. Students traveled to Hot Springs where they resided in the Austin and Embassy hotels for a Friday and Saturday; the 2014 Arkansas State Beta Convention fell on January 24 and 25. Dardanelle sent over 50 combined students and sponsors (including Mrs. Sue Busch, Mrs. Catherine Taylor, Mrs. Meagan Allen, Mrs. Lezlee Pierce, and Coach Paul Farnam) to the 2014 conference and boasted wonderful performances in academic competitions and campaign for state Beta office. Austin Thaxton received Third Place in the challenging Social Studies category. Junior Mary Kathryn Cruse represented Dardanelle as Candidate #7, running for State Vice President. She (along with her team, campaign manager Kelli Collins, and sponsor Mrs. Lezlee Pierce) led a race standing tall among her competition. Each candidate must deliver a speech, construct a tri-fold poster board for a meet-and-greet session, and have a team deliver a skit to the audience with a central theme focused on the according campaign. “Cruisin’ for a Bruisin’”, Cruse’s campaign theme, was presented in a hard-worked skit by her team and derived from a young adult Disney television movie. Cruse spent numerous hours preparing her speech, making her poster board, and working with her team to craft an outstanding candidacy for State Vice President. Though Dardanelle Beta didn’t come out on top of all the competitions, the group did a fantastic job in leading one of the most accomplished conventions for the Dardanelle chapter in all its history.
