For Richard Kornicki, becoming the Representative Deputy Lieutenant for Ealing wasn’t part of a lifelong plan - it came as something of a shock “The role is unpaid, has no expenses, no powers, and no office accommodation,” he says with a smile. “But it is an honour to be asked to undertake it - and for most people, including me, a great surprise ”
Appointed by the Crown on the advice of the Lord Lieutenant for Greater London, Kornicki now acts as the monarch’s local representative in Ealing “London is unique in having a Representative Deputy Lieutenant for each borough,” he explains “We come from all kinds of backgrounds, but what we share is a commitment to public service and active community involvement.”
That commitment is evident in the wide variety of duties he undertakes - laying
wreaths on Remembrance Sunday, supporting youth groups, visiting military and cadet units, and encouraging voluntary organisations “The highestprofile events are Royal visits, but they’re rare, ” he says “The day-to-day work is about being present in the community and recognising those who quietly make it better ”
Before taking up this ceremonial role, Kornicki had a distinguished career in the Home Office, working in areas such as serious crime, counterterrorism and police reform That experience, he says, gave him insight that shapes his work today “I try to visit parts of policing that get the least public recognition Internal police

award ceremonies are particularly moving - the acts of courage and dedication you hear about never make the headlines ”
A major part of his current role is supporting Ealing’s vibrant voluntary sector “This is one of the most inspiring aspects of the job,” he says “Even an informal visit to a small group is a way of saying ‘thank you ’ , ultimately on behalf of the Crown ” He highlights Lager CAN, which logged over 15,600 volunteer hours in 2024 collecting litter, and the Mahaba Café, which provides work experience for young adults with learning difficulties “No one asked them to do it - they just saw a need and got on with it That’s public service at its best ”
Kornicki also helped organise the King’s visit to Ealing’s Christmas Market last year - an event pulled together in just ten days “We made sure the King saw Ealing’s diversity,” he says “From the Hindu Mayor to Polish singers and a signed dance by IMPACT Theatre - it was Ealing in all its richness.”
He sees his role as a bridge-builder across the borough “I often come across a need in one place and a solution in another,” he says “I want to hear from inspiring people and groups. Together, we can make Ealing even stronger.”

VICKY CARTER AT HOME START E
SUPPORTING FA E
very week, I see first-hand how small, consistent acts of kindness can change the lives of families struggling to stay afloat As the Coordinator of Home-Start Ealing, I have the privilege of working alongside a team of passionate, trained volunteers who give their time - and their hearts - to help families with young children through incredibly difficult circumstances
Home-Start Ealing is part of a national network, Home-Start UK, and our mission is simple but powerful: to offer practical and emotional support to families with at least one child under five. These early years are so important - they’re a time of rapid development, when the foundations for lifelong learning, wellbeing, and resilience are laid But they can also be an incredibly overwhelming time for parents, especially those dealing with challenges like postnatal depression, bereavement, financial hardship, health issues or isolation That’s where we step in
We carefully match trained volunteers with local families who need support, and they visit once a week - usually for about two hoursproviding a listening ear, encouragement, and hands-on help Sometimes that might mean supporting a parent with a trip to the park, lending an extra pair of hands during a busy mealtime, or simply being someone who understands without judgment Every visit is confidential, tailored, and grounded in trust
affects 32% of households, and the use of food banks has risen by 35% in recent years A recent report from HomeStart London, Holding It Together (May 2025), paints a stark picture: 86% of families said money worries were making parenting harder, and over half of single parents reported struggling to afford essentials like food and nappies But the same
report also gives me hope It shows that 91% of families who received Home-Start support experienced improved mental health, and 84% felt more confident in supporting their child’s development.
parents themselves. Some have walked similar paths to the families they support. All of them are compassionate, committed, and deeply connected to the community
One of the things I’m most excited about this year is our new partnership with Ealing Broadway. Their support - through fundraising events, awareness campaigns, and community activitieswill be transformative Not only does it help us reach more families, but it also raises visibility for the work we do and encourages others to get involved, whether that’s through volunteering, donating, or spreading the word
Andrew Rollings, Centre Director at Ealing Broadway, says: “The work that Home-Start Ealing does to help local families is vital and we want to go some way to help them continue to reach those that need it most ”
If you ’ ve ever considered volunteering, I encourage you to reach out No special qualifications are needed - just time, empathy, and a willingness to listen. And if you ' re a local business, supporting us through sponsorship or regular giving can go a long way in helping families thrive
Ealing is a borough full of contrasts. It’s vibrant, diverse, and home to people from over 100 countries, yet many of our families face deep inequality Child poverty
At Home-Start Ealing, we support around 40 to 50 families every year Behind each of those numbers is a story of resilience, of hope, of a parent who just needed a little help to regain their confidence and give their child the start in life they deserve. Our volunteers are the heartbeat of this charity Many are
Parenting doesn’t come with a manual, and no one should have to do it aloneespecially during a crisis That’s why Home-Start Ealing is here: to walk alongside families, to offer support before problems spiral, and to make sure that every child gets the best possible start in life

EALING’S MOST
Tucked away in the heart of Ealing Common, this expansive residence has been a cherished home for its owners for the past eight years They first arrived in Ealing from Chiswick in the mid90s, beginning their journey in Northfields when it was still a modest, up-and-coming area Reflecting on the transformation of the neighbourhood, they recall, “When we moved to Ealing from Chiswick 30 years ago, Northfields Bank was still a bank and the only shops were grocers and junk shops Ealing has been through a lot of ups and downs, from the fantastic Jazz Festival and the arrival of the Lizzy Line to the IRA bomb going off on Uxbridge Road. But it’s become greener than ever, with tree planting on most streets and lottery grants for Pitzhanger Manor and Gunnersbury Park ”
As their family grew, they moved across the borough, each time taking on homes near open spaces and parks, redeveloping them into beautiful, personalised spaces. This final move to Ealing Common has been their most ambitious project yet
The home’s lush, sprawling garden is a standout feature, with a design carefully curated by the owners themselves. “The garden keeps us very busy,” they share. “I redesigned it, taking out 15 large trees and replacing them with around 20 new ones We also don’t have a gardener!” The garden has played host to countless celebrations, including 18th and 21st birthday parties, and remains a favourite spot for summer suppers under the pergola, where the last rays of the evening sun linger
Despite the grandeur of their home, one space remains a constant delight “The south-facing kitchen diner with big sliding doors onto the garden is the absolute hub of the home It opens up the space with birdsong and views of borrowed landscape with ancient oak, maple, and acacia trees It’s where we all congregate ”

NEW LOCAL BEAUTY TREATS
A RESTORATIVE RITUAL: HERBAL HAIR WASH AT SPLENDISH
I visited Splendish on Pitshanger Lane to experience their Herbal Hair Wash with Herbal Face Mask, and it was one of the most deeply relaxing treatments I've tried The session began with a tension-releasing scalp massage using fragrant lemongrass oil, expertly applied to melt away stress almost instantly An exfoliating scalp scrub followed, awakening the senses and stimulating circulation for healthier hair growth. The addition of a cooling herbal face mask and a full head, scalp, neck, shoulder, and hand massage elevated the experience from a simple hair treatment to a full-body ritual of relaxation The final touch - a gentle conditioning treatment and revitalising massage - left my hair feeling soft, nourished, and full of vitality The serene atmosphere and high standards of care at Splendish made it the perfect place to unwind, reset, and feel completely pampered

FROM BLUEPRINT TObeauty
Home renovations come with the promise of a beautiful, bespoke space but they’re also notorious for testing your patience, budget, and bandwidth. From dust-covered furniture to that now infamous phrase “lead times are longer than expected,” the process of turning a tired interior into a dream home can be as overwhelming as it is exciting
But with the right planning and advice, a renovation can be a rewarding journey, not just a stressful slog We asked three local industry insiders to share their best tips - from structural planning to styling - for navigating your project like a pro.
Don’t Skip the Plan
As tempting as it may be to dive headfirst into tiles and taps, the success of your project starts long before the sledgehammer comes out
Jamie Frankum from Frankum Construction warns that one of the biggest surprises homeowners face is what lies behind the walls
“Once we open up the timber and brickwork, cracks, rot and damp can appear Timber joists may need replacing, walls may need reinforcing, and all of that adds to the cost,” he says His advice? Build in a contingency: “Homeowners should allow a proportion of their budget to deal with these issues - and get the property properly surveyed before work begins ”
And it’s not just the structure - timelines and logistics need just as much forethought “Lead times for certain items can be up to 20 weeks,” Jamie adds “A delay on something like windows could hold up your whole project You need a programme in place and orders made well in advance ”
Lighting Isn’t Just Practical - It’s Transformative
One of the most common - and costly - design mistakes? Treating lighting as an afterthought
“Lighting is the animator of a space, ” says interior designer Annabel Ikueke from Ambient Igloo “It draws attention to key features, sets moods and adds moments of playfulness - think uplighting a houseplant to cast dramatic shadows, or using diffused lighting in a bathroom for a calming, spa-like feel.”
To get it right, she urges homeowners to “create a thoughtful lighting plan from the start Build it into the architecture of the room rather than relying on lamps and their messy cords as an after-thefact fix ”
Think Long-Term, Not Trend-Driven
Designing your dream space is about more than aesthetics Natalie Fernbach from Cullum Design says one of the biggest renovation missteps is prioritising looks over longevity “It’s easy to focus on how something looks instead of whether it’s hard-wearing or repairable,” she explains “Always avoid trends and stick to things that stand the test of time.”
And don’t forget the details: “Not enough plug points is a constant issue,” she warns “Also, think carefully about your lighting layout in relation to furniture - pendants are often put in the centre of a room, but that’s not always where the dining table will go!”
Find the Balance Between Personal Style and Function
Your home should reflect your personality, but it also needs to function well and that balance doesn’t happen by accident “In the early stages, I take time to understand the client - how they live, what they love, even what’s in their wardrobe,”says Annabel “From there, I shape a bespoke aesthetic that’s true to them but still feels pulled together ”
Natalie agrees that a successful renovation is all about listening “It’s a service business,” she says “We start with visuals - colour palettes, inspiring images, fabrics - so we ’ re all on the same page I also make sure I understand who’s using the space and how Homes should bring happiness, wellbeing and function ”
Protect Your Sanity with Smart Scheduling
Living through a renovation can feel like camping indoors but it doesn’t have to be chaos
Consider working in phases rather than all at once This can make managing contractors, budgets, and expectations easier It also allows for lessons learned in one area to improve outcomes in the next And if you ’ re living in the house during the build, sectioning off “safe zones ” can offer some much-needed calm amid the dust and drilling
Avoid
Common
Contractor Pitfalls
Jamie cautions that issues with builders - whether around cost, quality or communication - are often the most stressful parts of a project “Using trusted, recommended builders makes the process far less stressful,” he says “Also, make sure the builder prices the job from a clear scope of works This makes everything more transparent.”
His final tip? “Use a minor works contract It reduces the likelihood of disputes or scope creep, because everything is clearly described up front ”
Whether you ’ re planning a knock-through, a full extension or simply reimagining your living room, the key to a beautiful home lies in the balance of practical planning, personal expression and clear communication It’s not always smooth sailing - but with expert advice and a clear roadmap, your dream home is well within reach
Or, as Annabel puts it: “Design is a mix of instinct and structure It’s about telling your story in a space - but doing it with the right scale, colour, pattern, and proportion so it all flows.”

BOTTLED IN EALING
THE MAKERS BEHIND THE LABELS
KAROL OSTASZEWSKI & LAURA CLACEY SXOLLIE CIDER
I (Karol) was born and raised in Ealing, so I’ve always had a soft spot for the area ’ s fantastic pubs But despite the great venues, I found myself avoiding cider - most of the options felt overly processed, with unclear ingredients That’s what lit the spark for me I thought, why not create a cider that’s clean, honest, and genuinely refreshing? Something that’s as straightforward as it is satisfying The more we learned, the more motivated we became - especially when we discovered that UK law only requires 35% apple content for a drink to be labelled cider That didn’t sit right with us We wanted to change the narrative by crafting a cider made from just one ingredient: 100% apples No additives, no shortcuts
One of the proudest and most surreal moments for me was spotting SXOLLIE on shelves and taps across Ealing Seeing it on draught at The North Star, next to the grilled chicken at Nando’s, or sitting on a shelf in our local Tesco Express - it still makes me do a double take To know that our product has become part of the community I grew up in is incredibly special. It’s a constant reminder of how far we ’ ve come and what we ’ ve built with the support of the people around us
What sets our cider apart is its simplicity and integrity It’s made with just apples - nothing else - and we ’ re completely transparent about o of honesty and openness is som always felt reflected in the Eali community too From day one, w amazing support, whether it wa our first office space or being in to local hospitality partners For community isn’t just a locationfoundation of everything we do
MARK STRIPPEL GRAVENEY GIN
I was inspired by the idea of growing a local, organic, small-batch spirits company into something with a UK-wide presence something truly distinctive I wanted to create premium, high-quality spirits using unusual botanicals that set us apart in a crowded market After more than 20 years at the BBC, where I headed up radio stations and focused on crafting content with integrity and depth, I made the leap in 2021. That same commitment to quality and creativity now runs through everything we do - from broadcasting to gin!
Building a spirits brand from the ground up has its cha comes to investment We’ve self-funded so far and gro has allowed us to stay true to our values Along the wa fantastic support from loyal customers to platforms li Club, which have helped raise our profile. As a premiu a natural fit for cocktail bars, though it’s been a challe right venues locally Ealing has some wonderful pubs, great to see more dedicated cocktail spaces in the ar
I’ve lived in Pitshanger for 14 years, and being based in has been a huge part of our identity. I grew up spendi in Ealing, going to the cinema and exploring the area proud to support local events from the Acton Makers M Ealing Farmers Market We use sloe berries collected n experimenting with flavours inspired by the area ’ s Asia communities Our focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients baobab, figs and vanilla pods presents production ch currently waiting on the season ’ s first figs!) but we bel for itself. You can truly taste the quality in every bottle

LUCY DO DODO MICROBREWERY
The idea for The Dodo Micropub was planted in 2014, during a weekend escape from London to Kent I visited my first-ever micropub and instantly fell in love with the concept - an unpretentious, cosy space where independent drinks were championed, and conversation, not screens or music, was the main entertainment It felt like a true return to the essence of what pubs used to be: community-focused, warm, and welcoming That experience stayed with me, and I knew I wanted to bring that same spirit to Ealing The wonderful thing about micropubs is how deeply personal they are - because they’re independent, they can completely reflect the values and passions of their owners. At The Dodo, we ’ ve stayed true to that ethos by always championing small producers, creating an inclusive and welcoming space, and actively collaborating with female and POC-owned businesses I wanted it to be the kind of place where women feel comfortable coming in for a drink alone - and it is
Launching The Dodo Micropub in January 2017 wasn’t easy At the time, there wasn’t much craft beer in Ealing, and the idea of a micropub was completely new to the area That unfamiliarity brought a lot of resistance - some residents objected, and I was shocked when the police told me they had received formal objections, purely because I was a woman who had never opened a business like this before. That moment of outright sexism nearly derailed everything I had to fight to take my Licence Application to a hearing, and the delays nearly wiped me out financially and emotionally The Dodo was nearly dead before it even opened I could also write a whole separate piece about navigating the pandemic and its lasting impact on hospitality - but that’s a story for another day
One of the most exciting things to come out of The Dodo is The Dodo of Hanwell Ruma unique recipe inspired directly by the drinking habits of our community, affectionately known as the Hanwell Massive It combines the richness of a th subtle notes of an imperial stout, one of our most popular beer mething truly special: a rum with caramel base notes, a gentle warmth cate hints of cacao nibs, coffee, and vanilla It’s delicious neat, but also um punch or a seriously good rum old fashioned More than anything, it spirit of our community - and that’s what makes it so unique

MIKE SIDDELL PERIVALE BREWERY
We discovered Horsenden Farm through friends we’d met while living on the canal. My wife had joined a spoon carving group based there, and that’s how we got introduced to the space I started chatting with some of the volunteers and the park ranger and mentioned I was looking for a place to start a brewery There was an old, dilapidated shed on the farm, and they told us we could use it if we were willing to fix it up ourselves Brewing for me has always been about experimenting with foraged and homegrown ingredients - I'm fascinated by forgotten recipes and unusual flavours Horsenden Hill and the surrounding area have been a constant source of inspiration, with many of our recipes dreamed up on walks around the hill, keeping an eye on what’s in season right on our doorstep After our very first tap day - under a different name - we were so moved by the amazing support from the local community, we decided to rename ourselves Perivale Brewery, to really root ourselves in the area And honestly, the fact that Perivale was once a dry parish with no pubs made us laugh - it felt right to “put the ale in Perivale ”
One of the standout moments for us was being mentioned in our maiden speech at the House of Commons That was pretty surre one for the books But beyond that, it’s been the consistent gene volunteers and the enthusiasm of our customers that really keeps There’s something very special about being part of a local netwo people are genuinely excited to pitch in and see you succeed
Our farm-based setup and small-scale approach definitely make a bit different We’re proud to make seasonal and hyper-local br nettles foraged in the orchard for our pilsner to a one-off Japan beer we ’ re about to release. Even our “Beaver Bitter” was inspire reintroduction of beavers nearby and is flavoured with willow ba favourite food The landscape, the ingredients, and the people a constantly shaping what we create

FROM RAILS TO REVIVAL: THE STORY OF CHURCHFIELD ROAD
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANNE VALLUY
Churchfield Road, nestled in the heart of Acton, within the Borough of Ealing, has evolved from a quiet, semi-rural landscape to a vibrant urban thoroughfare, reflecting the broader transformation of the area Its history stretches back to the mid-19th century, with significant development spurred by the opening of Acton Central railway station in 1853 This connection to London sparked rapid growth, and by the early 20th century, Churchfield Road had become a bustling street, lined with shops, businesses, and housing.
and Foley’s (previously the Mechanics Arms), which have long served as popular gathering spots for locals Today, it’s the kind of place where, as Gaby from Basil & Tom’s puts it, “ you can’t walk down the street without saying hello to several people.”
One of the street’s early milestones was the opening of one of the first-ever Waitrose stores at 65 Churchfield Road in 1913, only the second branch for the now-iconic supermarket chain The street also became known for its lively public houses, including The Albion, The Rocket (formerly The Station Hotel),
Churchfield Road has also been home to several notable figures in British culture Pop singer Adam Faith was born at No 4 Churchfield Road East in 1940, while renowned songwriter Lionel Bart, best known for his work on the musical 'Oliver!', lived at 33–35a until his death in 1999 The acclaimed artist Eric
Ravilious, celebrated for his distinctive watercolours and war art, was born at No 90 in 1903
Over the years, Churchfield Road has featured in British popular culture, including scenes from 'Monty Python’s Flying Circus' and the 1980s TV series 'Minder,' which was filmed nearby. The street’s unique, close-knit vibe still endures today, with places like the Station House, where, as Paul Leslie, Director of Leslie & Co, says, you can “grab a pizza and watch the world go by.”
In recent decades, the street has experienced a revival, with independent shops, cafés and restaurants creating a lively, village-like atmosphere Halle from Vindinista, a popular local wine shop, captures this distinctive charm, saying, “Churchfield Road is one of those gems If you know, you know If you don’t, you need to know It’s full of lovely independents with a true sense of community ”
The Churchfield Community Association, founded in 2001, has been instrumental in maintaining the street’s unique character and fostering a strong sense of local pride Regular events like the quarterly Makers Markets, mentioned by Gaby from Basil & Tom’s, continue to bring even more buzz to the area, showcasing the creativity and passion of local businesses
Rollo, who is refurbishing a building on Churchfield Road to open a bar called Parakeet, reflects on his connection to the area: “I live in Poet’s Corner, so Churchfield Road is my local high street It’s also the closest high street to Park Royal, where our distillery is based, making it a natural stepping stone for us. The local community here is fantastic - everyone involved in the refurb lives just five minutes away, which really brings a sense of home to the project ”
Today, Churchfield Road continues to blend history and modernity, serving as a central part of Acton’s identity – a place that, as Paul Leslie puts it, has “character, community, and real heart ”
O P T A B L E

My husband and I recently visited Brilliant Gastro, the newest addition to Southall’s ever-evolving Green Quarter, and I can confidently say it lives up to the buzz. I’ve been to this part of the borough a few times, and it’s impressive how the area has transformed into a vibrant, multi-faceted community hub, complete with cafes, creative spaces like Open Ealing, and even padel courts. (Shout out to Gaetano at the Southall Coffee House, who stocks Ealing Living Magazine!)
For those unfamiliar, Brilliant Gastro is the latest venture from the Anand family, known for their legendary Brilliant Restaurant, which served up Punjabi classics to locals for half a century Founded by Gulu Anand in 1975, The Brilliant was more than just a restaurant – it was a community institution, beloved by locals and even royalty His Majesty The King famously called it his favourite curry house, and it’s long been a pilgrimage site for curry enthusiasts
Brilliant Gastro marks a bold new chapter, blending the Anands’ Punjabi roots with a modern gastropub vibe The décor strikes a balance – contemporary without being flashy, with a mix of indoor and outdoor seating that perfectly suits the warmer months We visited on a sunny Friday evening, and the atmosphere was lively, with a post-work crowd enjoying cocktails and crispy samosas The staff, clearly proud of their new home, were attentive and genuinely enthusiastic
We kicked things off with okra fries and chaat I’ve always had a soft spot for okra fries – there’s something addictive about the crispy, spiced batter - and these didn’t disappoint. The chaat was equally delicious, with just the right balance of tangy, spicy, and crunchy elements. For our main, we indulged in Dipna’s Special Meat Thali, which included a beautifully rich butter chicken, tender lamb and a standout daal that genuinely rivalled the famous Dishoom Black Daal – no small feat!
The little touches here are charming – poppadoms served on a miniature hand-painted trolley added a quirky, nostalgic touch, and the service felt personal, not rushed, despite the bustling vibe We left with full stomachs and high spirits, already plotting our return
If you ’ re looking for a fresh, authentic taste of Punjabi cuisine with a twist, Brilliant Gastro should be at the top of your list
