Faith Lutheran Church in Washington had planned to begin a 13-week open discussion group for senior citizens on the Book of Daniel from the Old Testament in late April.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced those plans to change.

The meetings are now postponed until further notice.

A layman will lead the discussion when it begins.

The Book of Daniel is rich in history, phophecy and is sometimes controversial, but very interesting and includes strong acts of faith showing God’s grace in the midst of overwhelming circumstances.

The meetings will be held at Faith Lutheran Church, 1008 Bieker Rd., Washington.

The owners of a longtime Union gas station and tire shop are spending more time at the golf course.

Pete and Rich Purschke, owners of Purschke Oil and Tire Company, closed the adjacent Conoco gas station on Feb. 14. Rich, 74, retired from the daily business six years ago, while Pete is headed in that direction.

They made the tough decision to close the gas station because the costs and environmental regulations were getting out of hand.

Pete came back to the service station first, in 1967, and Rich followed, in 1969.

When they returned to the station, Pete became operations manager and oil jobber manager, while Rich became the service center manager. Robert Purschke, who died in 1994, oversaw both.

They say they built the business on trust, not pressuring customers to pay to have something fixed if it was OK. “We tried to be up front with the people,” Pete Purschke said.

The Purschkes also have been heavily involved in the community over the years.

Pete Purschke, the 2018 recipient of the Union Area Chamber of Commerce’s Long Haul Award, was a member of the Union R-XI board of education for six years and has been involved with the Knights of Columbus, Union Rotary and Jaycees. He has also been a Franklin County Fair board member and president of the athletic booster club at East Central Col-

Rich Purschke remains a member of Union’s planning and zoning commission, and has been on the chamber board and the board at his church.

Both brothers have been heavily involved with youth sports.

“We sponsored any kind of ball team over the years,” Rich Purschke said.

Pete Purschke said he’s ready for a break after working at the garage for more than a half century.

“I would like to travel a little and play a lot of golf,” he said.

The toughest part of retirement is not getting to come in every day and work with customers. The Purschkes say it was common to strike up a half-hour conversation with customers.

“We appreciated all of our customers over the years,” Rich Purschke said. “They were friends as much as they were customers.”

Helping Others In a Pandemic

The community of Washington has rallied together to show its support for one another during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Everyone has proven they have something to offer to their community in a show of support.

Dianne Hellmann, Washington, has helped by making masks and donating them to area health care facilities, family and friends in an effort to prevent the spread of the virus.

Hellmann explained that her journey began when her nephew, a director of nursing at Cedarcrest Manor, expressed his concern over having enough masks for his workers.

“He explained that his staff needed two masks for every worker, one to wear and one to wash,” Hellmann said. “The facility had started sharing the good masks with Grandview Healthcare Center.”

That was all the motivation Hellmann needed to meet the need she saw was very present in her community.

Hellmann and her sister, Audrey Graham, got to work and started making masks to give to locals in need. The masks, according to Hellmann, are 6-by-9-inch rectangles and have three layers of cloth materials.

Making the masks has not come without its challenges.

to find,” Hellmann said.

Despite that, Hellmann and her sister have made over 460 masks that they donated to nursing homes like Cedarcrest, Mercy Hospital Washington, the Emmaus Homes and other health care facilities.

Hellmann also has made the masks for family and friends who have needed them.

“They are important,” Hellmann said. “We need to wear one if we go anywhere, but people need to have access to them.

“If everyone wears a mask it will help us protect each other.”

Hellmann said she is accepting donations of white thread and 1/8or 1/4 -inch elastic bands. Those who wish to help and make a donation can email dianne2924@att.net.

Bob Dzurick Has Been Supporting His Fellow Veterans, Community For Decades

By Isabella Volmert How did Bob Dzurick become a member of the Washington VFW? It was in search of a venue for his wedding, believe it or not!

And now more than 50 years later, the former commander of the Washington Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2661 remains committed to serving veterans in the area through multiple groups and organizations in addition to all the other work he does for the community.

Dzurick served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, from 1965-1968. He said he initially joined the army for two reasons.

“The service provided me that opportunity to complete my high school education while serving overseas in Germany at the time,” he said.

After his mother became ill his junior year of attending Washington High School, Dzurick dropped out to pay the bills. While in the army he earned his GED. “The second reason I joined the U.S. Army was I felt that it was my duty, as a U.S. citizen, to serve my country,” he said.

Dzurick served in West Germany, where he worked with radio and communication, and in Vietnam where he fought on the front lines for America before being sent back to Germany.

Dzurick remarked on how difficult it was to return to America where, “we weren’t welcomed like they are today.” He had read about the dissent toward the war through the Stars and Stripes newspaper and through letters while in Vietnam.

When he first arrived back to America, “Many gave me evil stares, actually looked down at me or turned away,” Dzurick said. “One guy even made a nasty remark as I passed him . . . It was not what I expected.”

After he returned home, he went to one meeting at the Washington VFW, but decided it was not for him.

“I attended a post meeting I was invited to and at least everyone was three times my age.”

However, shortly thereafter Dzurick met his future wife, Chris Struttmann, at Continental Forwarding, where they both worked at the time.

After the two became engaged, they began looking for a venue for their reception. Many of the ones around the area were too small or too expensive. But then

Dzurick realized as a member of the VFW, the couple could use the VFW’s hall at a discounted price for their reception.

“If you are a post member, you get it pretty cheap,” he said. “So I joined, and it’s been 50 years.”

Since then, Dzurick has become an immersed member of the VFW community. “(Joining) was the right move to make,” he said. “And I highly recommend it for anyone who has served.”

Over 50 Years of Service After joining the VFW, Dzurick became the post’s adjutant.

Some time later, he took up the position of assistant senior vice.

Unexpectedly, one night in 2016, the senior vice stepped down and Dzurick found himself nominated to be commander.

“It’s kinda hard to say no,” Dzurick said. He served as the VFW’s commander from 2016 to 2017.

The current commander of the post is Patrick Feldmann.

“I still do what I did in my time as commander,” Dzurick explained. “And I still enjoy doing that.”

The post serves local veterans, as well as current military members doing such things as sending care packages overseas.

One of the duties Dzurick continues is being a part of the VFW’s honor guard.

Dzurick spoke very highly of his continual time with the honor guard and of the deceased veterans it serves.

“It gives me a lot of satisfaction,” Dzurick said. “There’s a deep section of my heart for them.”

The honor guard is composed of 20 VFW members who attend veterans’ funerals. This includes all veterans, not just those who are members of the VFW and not just those who died in combat.

“No matter if you were a pencil pusher or in a fox hole, we are all still brothers and sisters,” Dzurick said.

During the service, the guard ceremoniously folds the American flag, fires three rifle rounds and plays taps on the bugle. The guard then presents the folded flag to the widow/widower or family of the deceased veteran.

The honor guard also presents the colors during various events such as Veterans Day, Memorial Day and Flag Day ceremonies.

Dzurick is involved with a number of other VFW events, where he regularly serves as the post’s DJ, which is one of his favorite activities.

“I supply the music down there for different functions,” he explained with a laugh. Dzurick is also an Elvis impersonator!

Additionally, Dzurick is a volunteer with the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Transportation program.

Through this program, he and other volunteers pick up disabled veterans and drive them to their doctor’s appointments, mostly at Jefferson Barracks VA Medical Center, John Cochran VA Hospital and sometimes to private hospitals.

“I do my best to make them feel at home,” he said.

Serving Veterans in Multiple Ways Dzurick is also a member of the American Legion Post 218, where he rides his motorcycle with the Legion Riders motor group. Through this experience, Dzurick is a member of the Patriot Guard.

Dzurick explained the nationwide program started after the second Persian Gulf War, when veterans saw a need to pay tribute to those killed in combat.

“As an honor to them, some of the American Legion Riders started to honor their remains with a motorcade,” he explained.

Dzurick fondly recounted the time about two years ago when Legion Riders drove from Washington, D.C., to Arnold, Mo. Over 1,000 riders, including Dzurick, then met to escort the flag and the P.O.W. flag to the Missouri National Veterans Memorial in Perriville, Mo., when the site opened. There, the flags wave over a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall.

Dzurick stressed multiple times, “The real heroes are the ones who pay the ultimate price.”

He said that when his father passed away when he was 8 years old, the Washington community supported him and his family. Dzurick went to St. Francis Borgia Grade School, St. Francis Borgia High School, Washington High School and East Central College.

“I think Washington in general is such a great community for veterans,” he said. “The town of Washington, Mayor Lucy and especially The Missourian have been very supportive of our local veterans and veteran organizations; what a fantastic place to live!”

Dzurick and his wife Chris married in January 1969. “I am truly blessed with my wife Chris. We have shared over 51 years of marriage, she is a saint.”

The two have five children, two

of whom served in the armed forces, nine grandchildren and four stepgrandchildren.

Dzurick expressed some concern with the well-being of area veterans during this time of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.

“We are experiencing a war unlike any a serviceman might face,” he said. “Alone, we cannot win; together we can overcome any adversity.

We must support each other and help where we can.”

Because the virus is most dangerous for those with pre-existing health problems or who are older, “that includes a lot of veterans,” he said.

munity to continue to reach out to veterans, especially in these times of social isolation.

“I think the first thing is to pray for them,” he said. “The second thing is don’t forget them.”

He recommended writing cards to veterans in the community during these times and giving them a phone call.

However, Dzurick also had words of hope to offer.

“We’ve been through a lot in this country and we are going to bounce back strong,” he said. “We can do this. God bless our veterans, our doctors, our nurses, our first responders, our country and one an2016:StClairMonument 1/8 color ad for other.”

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the Washington High School Class of 1970 Reunion Committee has decided to cancel the 2020 reunion and combine with next year’s event on May 7-8, 2021.

“This decision was not arrived at lightly,” said Cookie Hays, a member of the planning committee.

“We considered several options, including rescheduling for a later date in the summer or fall.

“In the end, we decided there were just too many uncertainties. Our 1970 classmates can be assured that we will still have a Friday night gathering next year focused on the Class of 1970.”

How Boomers Can Learn Spanish at Home n Techniques Designed for Older Learners

“Can older people learn to speak another language?”

That’s a common question asked at International Living events worldwide by the mostly Baby Boomer attendees. According to a new report from International Living, the simple answer is: Yes, soon-to-be retirees and those already retired can learn another language successfully . . . when given the right tools in a simple, repetitive way.

The report examines techniques specifically designed for older learners, which differ from those methods used most often with younger students.

“While in college, I took a course

called Brain Based Learning,” says Warren Hardy, founder of Warren Hardy Spanish, a Spanish-language school in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, which caters primarily to older learners.

“This theory was based on the idea that not all brains learn the same and so a general curriculum doesn’t work for all students. The idea was to study the specific brain you are teaching and find out how that brain learns best.

“When I moved to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, in 1990, I began teaching but I quickly found that students over 60 could not memorize and that they didn’t want to learn grammar. The methods and

content that I had successfully used to teach younger executives were suddenly thrown out the window. Both I and my students were frustrated. Mature students just wanted to be courteous and know enough Spanish to get around.”

According to Hardy, Boomer students suffer from what he calls C.R.S. “Can’t Remember Stuff.”

So how, he asks rhetorically, does the older brain learn, if it can’t remember stuff?

“Don’t laugh, all of us over 55 suffer from C.R.S!” says Hardy.

“I began to research how a brain over 60 learns and I soon found out things that dramatically changed how I thought about learning and teaching.”

Hardy learned four key lessons, he says: 1. Mature brains read and write very well. That is their strongest learning modality.

“I knew that my students wanted to learn to get around. They wanted to be courteous and tell people what they needed. With that in mind, I developed a system of learning based on expressing needs and wants. A simple pattern like ‘I need’ combined with another verb and a noun. For example, I need to study Spanish, I need to pay the bill, or I need to use the bathroom.

“I also learned that each pattern needed to be repeated at least 21 times to be remembered.”

Empowered with this knowledge, Hardy began to create his own course curriculum, based on what he calls Power Verbs.

“At first, I used handouts in the classroom and slowly honed my course,” he says. “I found that all students, no matter the age, succeed.

The Power Verbs pattern works for everyone.

“But there was still the issue of mature learners not being able to focus for long periods of time because language learners tend to study in spurts. They can’t go to class for months at a time, and they need to continually go back and review.

Thus, Hardy says, he saw a need for an online program that travelers to Spanish-speaking countries, would-be expats, and folks already living abroad could learn with from home, whenever it was most convenient for them.

“I created from my in-person program an online video course called the Warren Hardy Online Webtutor, which, today, has been used successfully by thousands of expats and Boomers worldwide.”

Today, Hardy argues, is as good a time as any to give a new language a try. With everybody sequestered at home, he says, learning online makes good sense.

She Made a Career of Helping Others Through Hard Times n And Serves the Community Through SFB

Washington native Joan Unnerstall has dedicated her professional life and personal life to serving those who live in the community.

Serving Others Helping others has always been an important aspect of her life, instilled in her from a young age.

“Helping others has always been imbedded in me,” Unnerstall explained. “I learned it from my parents; they were always there to help (my family) and others.”

As a way of paying it forward, Unnerstall makes it her priority to do the same.

Unnerstall focused her career as a insurance account representative on helping people with insurance, rather than just selling.

“Life and health insurance have been the biggest things I have sold, and to sell someone a life insurance policy and be able to tell their family they are taken care of after their death is a good feeling,” she said.

Unnerstall noted that the people she works with are more than customers, they are also friends.

“I have built a lot of long-term friendships with customers,” she said. “Some of the families I have worked with are third generation.”

Unnerstall explained how her position at State Farm has given her the ability to help people during trying times.

“Some of the people who I work with have been in an accident, faced flood or fire damage to their homes,” Unnerstall said.

The process of helping others through those hard times has been what is most rewarding according to Unnerstall.

She also can be found serving her community through her church, St. Francis Borgia, where she helps with fundraising events and dinners.

Personal Life Unnerstall has lived in Washington her entire life, calling three separate houses home.

“I am totally grounded in Washington and this community.”

She attended St. Francis Borgia for both grade school and high school.

During high school, Unnerstall worked at Fan Photo, owned by Frank Nouss and daughter Renee, and as a lifeguard in the summer for the Washington City Pool.

Unnerstall married her husband Mark in 1976 and had two children ,Aaron and Erica.

Her family has since grown. She has a daughter-in-law, Shannon Unnerstall, and son-in-law, Zach Ryals and two grandchildren, Peyton Unnerstall and Teddy Ryals.

Career Following her graduation from SFBHS in 1972, she attended East Central College for one year and received her secretarial certificate.

Unnerstall began working for State Farm in 1973 and stayed there until her retirement last month. In her 47 years of being with the insurance company, she worked under three separate employers: Bob and Vern Tobben, Matt Tobben and Jim Feighery.

During the early part of her career, she attended night school and earned an associate degree from ECC and obtained an insurance license for home and auto.

Unnerstall was one of two team members who have qualified to be in the Missouri State Farm Agents’ Team Member Hall of Fame every year since its inception in 2005. Every year, 120 team members throughout the state are chosen.

Planning Retirement Plans and lists of what Unner-

stall will do during retirement have already been made and are growing, that includes several trips.

She expressed how excited she is to spend more time with her family and hopes she will be able to spend more time outside swimming and working in her garden.

“After retirement, I am an open book with blank pages, and I will fill them in as I go,” Unnerstall said.

By David Shannon Meet a polka-dot pooch with punch and pounds of personality in “Roy Digs Dirt,” my favorite from David Shannon, who’s churned out a packet of picture books, including “No, David!” a Caldecott Honor Book.

Shannon writes and illustrates high-energy books featuring main characters that are borderline exhausting in their antics. Seeing Roy on the cover you can also hear the dog panting, feel his rapid breath against your skin.

Roy is impassioned about dirt, his paw prints inside the cover leading readers into the story. “Roy

digs dirt. Roy thinks dirt makes him look handsome,” a statement accompanied by an illustration that proves Roy is anything but

— his features discombobulated, crooked on his face.

The chain of cussedness continues with Frog insulting Bird, Bird upsetting Goat, and Goat bashing into Pig’s hind end with his snout, causing Pig to erupt into “big, loud, honking snorts” that bring Brown Dog over to console her, only to have Pig exclaim, “Go away! I don’t even like you.”

Nothing could be further from the truth, as the wise dog knows. The loyal friend sits by Pig’s side allowing the porker to feel her feelings before giving Pig a big, sloppy lick.

The pup’s kindness reverses Pig’s angst and has a domino effect. Each barnyard animal and bird offer an apology to the buddy they’ve berated, ending with a surprise that’s clever as can be.

Preschool to third grade *** ‘On the Horizon’

By Lois Lowry Lois Lowry, a giant in children’s literature, rises to even greater heights with “On the Horizon,” a compact novel in verse.

Her style is simple yet poignant, beginning with the fateful day she was 3, playing on the beach at Waikiki, and the USS Arizona passed by.

It was Dec. 7, 1941, shortly before the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

Lowry was too young to understand the tragic event about to unfold. Years later, while watching an old home movie her father made, she realized the ship “shrouded in the mist” was the Arizona, one of the ships sunk at Pearl Harbor, leading to the loss of 1,177 men.

This achingly beautiful book describes some who lost their lives.

Thirty-seven sets of brothers were onboard, including one set of twins, Jake and John, “ . . . one would die, and one live on.” Navy Band Unit 22 was on the ship too, all 21 of them perished, “ . . . now, with their instruments lay twisted.”

In the second section, “Another Horizon,” Lowry lays bare the horror of Hiroshima, Aug. 6, 1945. She describes the mushroom cloud, the deadly “black rain,” relating stories of Japanese who perished, and those who later suffered the effects of the radiation.

The final section, “Beyond the Horizons” brings the book full circle recalling an uncanny happenstance Lowry had with Koichi Seii, a Japanese boy she saw in a schoolyard after her family moved to Tokyo after the war.

The two couldn’t have imagined they’d see each other again in 1994 at a library convention in Miami where they discovered they’re the same age and had lived in the same area of Tokyo. In 1945, Seii’s family fled to America, where he became a celebrated children’s book illustrator, renaming himself Alan Say. “On the Horizon” presents two vastly different cultures, laying bare the heartbreak and sacrifices each suffered — our shared humanity its timely, powerful message.

This is a stunning book. Though intended for 9- to 12-year-olds, this one’s appeal is boundless.

Stay Occupied, Laugh to Overcome Social Seclusion

Everyone enjoys a day off every once in a while. Most kids enjoy those snow days when they wake up in the morning to find that an overnight snowfall prevents them from going to school that day. Adults, too, might look forward to a not-so-sick day that gives them a chance to work from home in their pajamas.

But none of us were prepared for the isolation and loneliness of “sheltering in place” during the coronavirus crisis. The experts tell us that this new norm can cause psychological and physical harm if we don’t take measures to stimulate our minds and invigorate our bodies. We need to stay in touch with ourselves and with the world.

Social seclusion is particularly dangerous for the elderly, especially for seniors who live alone. In normal times they can ward off depression by meeting up occasionally with friends and neighbors or by hanging out at their gyms or senior centers. So, how can they — and the rest of us — stay sane in a world that has gone mad.

The first thing to do is to take matters into your own hands by vowing not to give in to a notion that you are in solitary confinement. Be aware that there are things you can do to engage your mind and to keep yourself active.

For example, staying connected with friends and family using technology, which is not just for the 20-somethings among us. Even the orneriest of old timers among us can learn to use picture phones, better known as FaceTime via an Apple cell phone or Google Duo if you prefer an android based mobile device.

It’s just like making an old fashioned telephone call except it allows you to look — eye-to-eye — at the person with whom you are talking.

The idea is to distract yourself. This is no time to feel sorry for yourself. For example, make a to-do list of entertaining and engaging activities such as taking walks around the block. You don’t have to shake hands with passersby with whom you might be con-

nected; simply give him or her a hearty smile and a wave.

And, remember just because you need to distance yourself, there’s no need to shout to one another across six feet of space to participate in a conversation.

Meanwhile, limit the amount of time you spend watching news reports about the pandemic on your TV. Keep yourself informed, by all means. But, don’t let the “bad news” that is being reported get to you.

And, if there ever was a time for getting physical, it is now. Stay active.

If you can’t get out for a walk, at least establish a routine of in-home activities that will keep your blood flowing and your mind off of bad news.

Set for yourself a list of daily chores around the house such as cleaning up the place and spending time doing indoor exercises such as sit ups and pushups.

Finally, if you are going to use

your computer to keep abreast of developments related to the coronavirus outbreak, focus on the progress that is being made on the task of dealing with the disease. It can be quite encouraging.

Better yet, there are a plethora of uplifting and downright humorous videos related to the disease available via the Internet. Google or search the Web for “funny coronavirus videos.”

Remember, laughter is the best medicine. My personal favorite is a video on YouTube that is attributed to one Frank Vaccariello. It chronicles the very amusing ways that the characters in the TV series, MASH, dealt with the perils of infections.
