Graffiti ď Ž

The word "graffiti" has its origins in the Greek word graphein meaning writing. This evolved into the Latin word graffito. Graffiti is the plural form of graffito.

The modern history of graffiti dating back to the 60s when it started in New York, influenced by hip-hop. The first graffiti artists were engaged firms, and lived and painted in New York. 1

The world of graffiti began around the year 1970 in the city of New York where many young rebels born in neighborhoods where poverty and crime reigned took to the streets loaded rudimentary paint cans to express on the walls of their city their thoughts. One of these young New Yorkers was JeanMichel Basquiat whom I consider one of the pioneers in the wide world of graffiti.

Basquiat simply was writing sentences with a simple calligraphy and no aesthetic value but served a function, to claim and express the thoughts of the people of New York and that's what graffiti. ď Ž Basquiat just devoted to painting with his friend Andy Warhol

Meanwhile, Keith Haring, an artist, began painting their pictures in public places. First pasting posters and then painting directly on walls and subway walls in New York. Being so different types of art, Haring became famous and soon art museums in the city began to exhibit their works.

4

Gradually street graffiti, inspired by Haring designs, it was incorporated into Hip Hop culture, rap and break dancing and began to spread to other countries. Had its strongest during the seventies, but then began to lose popularity. But a decade one of the most popular national networks in the United States issued a television program about graffiti and suddenly reappeared signatures and graffiti art not only for the U.S. but for urban sites around the world and makes especially in European cities. 5

It is said that graffiti is to delimit a territory gaining the protection thereof, is the same act that many animals use to mark your spot to display them as their own.

Some successfully exploited the artistic possibilities of graffiti, but not all the scribble painting on the facade of a building is an artist. In many cities sought to curb the proliferation of illegal graffiti. 12

Today graffiti is not very well regarded in society, only a few consider it art and say I should be in museums but the harsh truth is that graffiti is vandalism that allows express freely and if becomes longer and graffiti art becomes something you do not know how to catalog ... 13
