What initially drew you to the game of Golf, and how did you get started?
I started later than most. I was 21, and my one friend asked me to play Mannitoo. After the round, I was annoyed and was adamant that golf wasn't that hard and should be easy to get good at... boy, I was wrong. I worked hard enough with latenight range sessions at Hartees under the lights, and 2 years in, I passed my PAT on the first try, and now we are here still working even harder at it.
Can you name two of your favorite courses that you've played and what makes them unique to you?
Tobacco Road, just the way every hole is completely different, and you are forced to hit some different shots into the greens and play it off slopes and contours. The National Course in Reynolds Plantation. It plays longer because of elevated shots, and the greens were pretty contoured as well, which made it interesting when picking shot selection.
Please give us some insight into your prior positions. My first job was at Glengarry Golf Links, where I am currently. I left the business for about a year and a half. I then took a job at Indiana Country Club, where I was an Assistant to Zachary Turek. Then, I came back to Glengarry just to be closer to where we were building our home.
What made you decide to pursue a career in the PGA of America, and how long have you been a PGA member?
I tried a couple of different options in college and didn't really find anything I was passionate about. I knew I wanted to be around sports in some regard. Then I picked up golf and got the "bug," so then I decided I wanted to make a career out of it and called a couple of courses around the area, and Glengarry just happened to take interest. I have been a full member since April of 2024.
Talk about being a PGA of America member, what it means, and having PGA after your name.
It's an honor that people still respect in golf. It means you put the work in to learn more about the game and are actively trying to grow the game of golf. When people see the logo or see PGA next to your name, they know that they are talking to someone who is knowledgeable about the game of golf and a person who truly cares.
What wisdom can you offer about golf careers and the importance of becoming a PGA member/achieving membership status? Golf is unique in the sense that you can make it be what you want it to be. You can be a head pro, a teaching pro, a club builder, or you can be a do-it-all type of person. There are a ton of avenues you can take and be successful as long as you put the effort in. Becoming a PGA member is reassuring those people you help that you did the work and that you are knowledgeable in the topic, and being a PGA member, you must actively learn to keep your status, which lets you not become stagnant in the job.
