HEAD’S PERSPECTIVE & REFLECTION

The Benefits of Reaccreditation: A Shared Commitment to Excellence

This Autumn, Dwight School Seoul successfully completed its IB, CIS, and NEASC reaccreditation visits, marking a significant milestone for our community. Reaccreditation is a rigorous process where external evaluators assess our school’s performance against internationally recognized standards in education, governance, and student wellbeing. It serves as both a quality assurance mechanism and a tool for continuous improvement. But beyond its technical aspects, reaccreditation is an opportunity to reflect on our shared values and celebrate the achievements of our students, staff, and families.

During their time with us, the visiting teams engaged deeply with our school community. They observed classrooms, met with staff members, and participated in conversations with parents, student representatives, and leadership teams. Their observations, shared in preliminary feedback, were overwhelmingly positive, showcasing what makes Dwight School Seoul a truly exceptional place to learn and grow.

Some of their comments included:

“The strength of culture and community is an incredible asset to the school.”

“There is a clear focus on pastoral care and student well-being.”

 “The learning environment exceeds expectations.”

Such affirmations are a testament to the dedication and talent of everyone involved. They highlight the thriving culture we’ve built—one that values holistic development, fosters meaningful connections, and places student wellbeing at its core. Our emphasis on pastoral care and student support received particular praise, underscoring our commitment to nurturing not only academic excellence but also emotional and social wellbeing.

Reaccreditation is not merely about maintaining standards; it’s about ensuring that those standards reflect our vision for education. It provides valuable insights into how we can further innovate and enhance our practices. While the visiting teams identified areas for continued development, as is natural in any evaluation, they found no urgent issues to address. This demonstrates the high quality of education and care provided at Dwight and assures parents of the strong foundation we’ve built.

For students, reaccreditation guarantees they are part of a globally recognized school, giving them access to opportunities worldwide and ensuring their learning experiences are of the highest caliber. For parents, it offers confidence that their children’s education is guided by thoughtful, strategic planning and delivered by exceptional educators. For staff, it reinforces a shared sense of purpose, providing feedback that fosters professional growth and validates their hard work.

The reaccreditation process also deepens our connection as a community. It relies on collaboration and open dialogue, bringing together voices from across the school. This year, the involvement of parents played a crucial role, and their insights were invaluable. We extend heartfelt thanks to those who shared their experiences and perspectives with the visiting teams, contributing to the success of the process.

As we await the final report, which we will share in due course, we celebrate this moment as a testament to our community’s collective effort. Reaccreditation is not just a requirement—it is an opportunity to grow, innovate, and reflect on our mission to ignite the spark of genius in every child. Together, we continue to shape Dwight School Seoul into a thriving, world-class learning environment where everyone can shine.

ALIGNING ATHLETICS WITH THE IB LEARNER PROFILE

Dwight Athletics is grounded in our school’s mission and pillars of Global Vision, Community, and Personalized Learning, which guide our athletics program. By integrating the IB Learner Profile, I strive to create an environment where sports act as a platform for building character, resilience, and global citizenship. Every aspect of our program—from daily practices to KAIAC competitions—reflects Dwight’s commitment to developing students into well-rounded individuals who lead with integrity and compassion.

The pillar of Global Vision shapes our program’s purpose, encouraging students to look beyond the game and view themselves as part of an interconnected world. Competing against other schools in the KAIAC league fosters cultural appreciation and broadens students’ perspectives. By engaging with athletes from diverse backgrounds, Dwight students learn to celebrate differences, embrace new ideas, and embody open-mindedness—values that are essential in today’s globalized society. Building connections with each student allows me to see firsthand how they grow as both athletes and global citizens. Watching them gain confidence in communicating across cultures and build relationships that extend beyond the field is immensely rewarding.

Community is the foundation of our athletics program, fostering a sense of belonging and shared purpose. Each team operates as a supportive family, teaching students to collaborate, show empathy, and trust one another. These bonds help students understand that they are part of something larger than themselves, reinforcing the IB values of being caring and communicative. As I work alongside

students, I find pride in seeing them grow into leaders who support each other on and off the field, embodying values of kindness, respect, and sportsmanship. Every team interaction, whether in practice or competition, strengthens their commitment to our Dwight community and to each other.

Our athletics program also aligns deeply with Personalized Learning, as each student’s journey is unique. Just as Dwight tailors academic learning, we focus on individual growth within athletics. Through personalized coaching, I help students set meaningful goals, track their progress, and embrace both successes and setbacks as learning opportunities. This individualized approach allows me to witness their personal development—from a beginner learning foundational skills to an experienced player pushing their limits. Seeing this growth is a source of pride; each student’s achievements, no matter how small, reflect their dedication to improvement and resilience in the face of challenges.

Throughout this journey, I take great pride in seeing students mature into compassionate, wellrounded individuals ready to contribute positively to the world. Athletics at Dwight Seoul is more than physical development; it is a transformative experience that shapes students’ character, preparing them to be thoughtful, empathetic, and adaptable global citizens. By connecting with students, fostering their growth, and witnessing their achievements, I am reminded daily of the powerful impact that a values-driven athletics program can have, embodying Dwight’s mission and IB principles in every game, practice, and interaction.

UNCONVENTIONAL PATH TO SUCCESS

Interview with Matt Shampine

Aaron Lee, Grade 12

On the fifteenth of November 2024, I had the pleasure of interviewing Matt Shampine, the CEO of DNK, a company that has made a profit of over 20 million dollars USD over the past 11 months of existence. He’s had an unconventional journey to success, having previously worked

at WeWork, a company that focuses on helping start-ups, and having moved back to Korea after living in the US from a very young age.

During the interview, Mr. Shampine reflected on his rocky path to success. How he had initially

gotten a degree in Computer Science from The College of New Jersey. How he attempted to work an office job as a programmer but found that he hated every second of it. How during his twenties, a close friend unfortunately passed away in a tragic accident, something that shaped his perspective in life. He recounted running in a political race, which had allowed him to gain various skills such as public speaking, debate, and negotiation. He then went on to explain his entrepreneurial journey: starting his own company, which was a huge success until the economic crash, working at WeWork, becoming one of its core members as a programmer, returning to Korea, and eventually starting his own company. Then, spending the next couple of years attempting to find the right niche, failing because of various reasons, once, quite ridiculously, due to a one-hundred-fifty-year-old bank going bankrupt.

His story was inspiring, not simply because of the happy ending of success as a CEO, but because

of what he went through to get there: dealing with heartbreak, dealing with external factors not under his control such as the economic crash and bankruptcy. I learned that sometimes, life just isn’t fair, however, what counts is resilience, the ability to move forward, finding a new angle, and starting over, no matter how painful it may be. His heartfelt advice at the end of the interview to find something that you were genuinely passionate about resonated with me. I want to be a novelist, a writer of fantasy books. That isn’t exactly a stable or safe career choice. However, it is what I truly love to do. His advice gave me the motivation and confidence to continue on with my own path, my own spark of genius.

His unconventional path to success and emphasis on genuineness touched not only me, but the student body as a whole, as his story proves that success isn’t a linear or standardized process. Everyone’s path is different. It’s the resilience to continue on one’s own path that counts.

BALI BEYOND THE SURFACE: A JOURNEY OF CULTURE, EMPATHY, AND RESTORATION

From crystal clear waters to lush forests teeming with extraordinary life and beauty. A unique culture so firm against the shifting tides of globalization. Bali was a truly eye opening and memorable experience for myself and my fellow students. We shared experiences that deeply impacted each and every one of us personally and fostered an array of new skills. Through the countless moments spent together we learnt the value of empathy in our culturally connected world. To highlight these deep lessons learnt I would like to take you back to specific moments during our Week Without Walls in Bali and walk you through them.

For the first portion of the trip we were split up into two groups according to what we would learn, scuba diving or surfing. As a part of the scuba diving group we were trained both in the classroom and out in the water to develop our scuba diving skills. The process was mentally and physically demanding, requiring each and every one of us to practice our perseverance skills and grit. Each of us faced unique challenges during the process, and in hindsight this personal journey of growth helped us all become more resilient. Not only this but we saw the benefit of our perseverance as we used our newly found skills to plant and rehabilitate coral. In collaboration with the local teams and united under one goal, we leapt into the precious underwater world and piece by piece began putting the coral puzzle together. Though we could not win the battle against coral

loss we left with a fire in our hearts to continue fulfilling our duty to preserve as scuba divers.

In the second portion the two separate groups came together again at the Sea Communities homestead. There we were provided with the opportunity to live amongst the locals, collaborate with them, and share moments of joy. One such moment was a soccer match organized with the local team at their court. We walked to the court through the neighborhoods and truly immersed ourselves into their lives. This is where I believe the importance of empathy truly shone through, in the moments where we walked in the shoes of the local kids and lived in their world. Though we could not speak their language, nor understood one another we had a great time playing barefoot with them. Soccer became a medium that built a bridge between

their culture and ours and we built up a form of empathy that goes beyond the mind but reaches the heart. Walking back to the homestead I pondered how powerful empathy had been in interacting with and bonding with the local kids, a tool we will certainly all fall back on in our futures.

In my introduction I was not truly transparent about life in Bali, a theme that seems consistent across the internet. I overlooked the gloomy reality of the many global issues greatly impacting those wonderful people I met. On our final day we spent a great deal of time at a local recycling center, learning about the harsh reality of plastic pollution and the mountain of challenges being tackled surrounding it. We observed how harmful the plastic was to the local environment and just how expensive and difficult recycling posed to be. Fortunately we had the chance to help with the recycling process and plant new crops in the adjacent sustainable garden.

As the time in Bali came to an end and we began boarding the bus our hearts were filled with a deep sense of fulfillment and our characters molded. I believe each and every one of us felt made anew by the countless experiences we had and our toolboxes filled with old sharper skills and new ones alike. Goodbye Bali, until we see you again.

WHY DWIGHT - A PARENT’S PERSPECTIVE

Dwight Seoul is truly a

community

This is our family’s second time choosing Dwight, and we couldn’t be more pleased.

Life is full of choices, and we often face difficult decisions. Like many parents, we want the best for our children and constantly weigh our options to provide them with the best opportunities. Choosing a school is one of those critical decisions, and selecting Dwight Seoul not once but twice has been one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.

While many might highlight the IB Curriculum, the school’s history, and its state-of-the-art facilities as reasons for choosing Dwight Seoul, there is so much more to this school than its offerings.

Dwight Seoul is truly a community—a place where connections are made, and relationships are built. This sense of belonging drew us back to Dwight after our return to Korea. Our first two years at Dwight were profoundly impactful. Our children not only had the opportunity to learn and grow but also gained confidence in themselves and developed a supportive network around them. Upon returning, they have continued to flourish academically, socially, and emotionally. They have developed a broader worldview and a deep awareness that has shaped their vibrant personalities. They embody mindfulness, thoughtfulness, and compassion in every decision they make. Witnessing their growth fills us with hope and inspiration for their future.

At Dwight Seoul, our children genuinely matter. We see this in our experiences and those of other families. The teachers and staff feel like family. Special attention is given to our children’s welfare and safety, emphasizing community and shared responsibility. Dwight Seoul has created an environment that invests in our family and supports our children, reinforcing our confidence in our decision to return. The commitment to our well-being and the continued effort to foster a community spirit has also been incredibly reassuring.

Dwight Seoul's dedication to cultivating a welcoming and heartfelt community is so impactful that I am grateful to have been nominated as the new PA President. With this new role, and with the help of our new PA Board, teachers, staff, and fellow parents, I hope to carry on the mission of not only helping to “Ignite the Spark” in our children but also continuing Dwight’s efforts in fostering a community that makes a positive and meaningful difference.

PREPARING FOR LIFE BEYOND SECONDARY EDUCATION

Having been immersed in international education for over 25 years, I have seen thousands of students matriculate to top universities around the world. I have also sent my own two children to university within the past five years, so this topic is near and dear to my heart both professionally and personally. As I see our current Grade 12 students navigating these months that will lead them to acceptances and matriculation, I share in their anticipation, eagerly waiting to see how they will spread their wings and soar.

The transition from secondary education to the next stage of life is one of the most transformative periods in a young person’s journey. Whether pursuing higher education, entering the workforce,

or exploring other paths, preparing for life beyond secondary school requires intentional planning, self-awareness, and adaptability. Knowing the essential steps necessary for achieving university readiness and fostering a mindset of lifelong learning, could make things easier. Fortunately, international school students such as ours have the luxury of College Counselors or UCCs (University and Career Counselors) who expertly guide students through what could be a tumultuous season in their young lives and provide individualized support. I attended a very public high school in the United States, and my “guidance counselor” sometimes remembered my name. The difference is vast.

The Importance of University Readiness

University readiness goes beyond meeting admission requirements. It encompasses a range of academic, social, and emotional skills that help students thrive in post-secondary environments. We at Dwight are very fortunate to have an excellent UCC who is a leader in her field who works with each student individually to chart out their path to the school of their dreams. Together, they work on developing and curating these skills:

1. Academic Preparedness:

Mastering core subjects such as Humanities, Mathematics, Sciences, and Arts that promote critical thinking skills

Developing strong study habits and time-management skills

Familiarity with research and writing techniques required in tertiary studies

2. Self-Management:

Balancing coursework, extracurricular activities, and personal responsibilities

Learning how to set achievable goals and self-monitor progress

Building resilience to navigate challenges and setbacks

3. Social-Emotional Skills:

Communicating effectively with peers, professors, and advisors

Developing a support network to enhance well-being and academic success

Cultivating a growth mindset to embrace learning opportunities and overcome challenges

4. Financial Literacy:

Understanding the cost of university and exploring financial aid options, including scholarships, grants, and student loans (where applicable)

Budgeting for tuition, living expenses, and other costs

Recognizing the long-term impact of financial decisions on personal and professional goals

Steps to Achieve College Readiness

Achieving college readiness involves proactive steps that start well before graduation:

1. Explore Career Interests Early: Take advantage of secondary school career assessments, guest speakers, job shadowing, and internships to discover interests and potential career paths.

2. Engage in Rigorous Academics: Enroll in rigorous curricular programs such as the International Baccalaureate (IB) to experience and engage in university-level academics.

3. Develop an Extracurricular Activities Portfolio: Be intentional about demonstrating individual skills, achievements, and personal growth. Curate a collection of documents, materials, and evidence showcasing your involvement in activities such as clubs, sports, volunteer work, internships, leadership roles, artistic endeavors or personal projects.

4. Build a College List: Research universities that align with your career interests, budget, and personal preferences. Consider factors such as size, location, campus culture, and available programs.

5. Prepare for Standardized Tests: Plan and study for exams such as the SAT or ACT, though many schools have made these optional now. Some schools may also require additional tests for specific programs.

6. Seek Guidance: Work closely with school college/university counselors, teachers, and mentors to identify academic and extracurricular opportunities that support college readiness.

7. Visit the Campuses: Visit the various university campuses with an open mind as well as discernment.

Lifelong Learning: Beyond University

It is generally well-regarded that lifelong learning is the key to staying relevant and fulfilled in a rapidly evolving world. It involves embracing a continuous pursuit of knowledge and skills throughout life. Psychologist and author, Carol Dweck, states in her landmark book, Mindset: The Psychology of Success, that taking on a growth mindset can lead to greater success, resilience, and personal development. By understanding that our abilities are not fixed, but rather can be cultivated, we can approach challenges with more openness and determination, ultimately achieving more in life. Here’s how to cultivate a lifelong learning mindset:

1. Stay Curious: Approach every experience (both positive and negative) as an opportunity to learn. Ask questions, explore new subjects, and challenge your assumptions. I highly recommend the book, Think Again, by organizational psychologist, Adam Grant, that will help you to challenge and rethink your assumptions in an intelligent way.

2. Leverage Technology: Take advantage of online courses, podcasts, webinars, and other resources to gain knowledge and skills outside formal education.

3. Develop Transferable Skills: Focus on skills that are applicable across various careers, such as communication, problem-solving, adaptability, and teamwork.

4. Set Learning Goals: Periodically evaluate your personal and professional aspirations. Identify gaps in knowledge or skills and actively work to address them.

5. Engage in Networking: Join clubs (both in and outside of school), attend workshops, and connect with peers in your interest area(s) to stay updated on trends and opportunities.

6. Reflect and Adapt: Regularly assess your progress and adapt your learning strategies to meet changing goals and interests. Your counselor can assist you in this area.

Conclusion

The journey from secondary school to university and beyond is not just a transitional phase; it is a profound opportunity for growth, exploration, self-discovery, and self-actualization. As students navigate this period, the combination of intentional preparation, academic rigor, and the support of dedicated professionals such as our Teachers and our UCC, ensures that they are equipped to face the challenges and embrace the opportunities that lie ahead.

By fostering essential skills such as academic preparedness, self-management, social-emotional resilience, and financial literacy, our students gain more than just the tools to succeed at university; they cultivate a mindset of lifelong learning that will serve them throughout their lives. The world is dynamic, and the ability to remain curious, adaptable, and committed to growth is a critical differentiator in any path students choose to pursue. Case in point, as I pore through the hundreds of teacher applications and CVs, I am naturally drawn to those who exhibit and articulate their desire to continue to learn and also challenge their assumptions. I am pretty confident that most other employers feel the same.

To our Grade 12 students, this process has become second nature by now. Their achievements and readiness are a testament to the collaborative efforts of their families, teachers, and counselors, as well as their own dedication. To our younger students, this is an invitation to begin thinking about the exciting journeys ahead, armed with the knowledge that preparation is not a burden but a gift that paves the way for future success.

As we look forward to honoring and celebrating the accomplishments of this year’s graduating class, we remain committed to empowering all our students to soar to new heights, embracing the challenges of today and the boundless possibilities of tomorrow.

LESSONS FROM A STUDENT-ATHLETE

As a Junior at Dwight, I constantly question how I can balance my academics as an IB DP student with my passion for sports as a committed student-athlete. At first, it was maintaining my physical health that drew me to sports, getting active after hours of sitting at a desk. But that’s not the only reason. Sports at Dwight have become my way of building connections, not just with my classmates, but also with students from other schools, like those in KAIAC (Korea American Interscholastic Activities Conference). Through sports, I’ve met so many amazing, extraordinary people. The relationships I’ve built with my teammates have grown over the course of practice, team dinners, and bus rides to and from our away games. Staying active as a student-

This journey, however, has not been without its challenges. Balancing my commitment to sports with my academic duties initially felt overwhelming. I found myself rushing from school to practice, squeezing in study sessions between games, and struggling to keep pace with my other extracurriculars. Over time, I realized I was spreading my energy too thin. Activities that once brought me joy began to feel draining. I made the tough decision to let go of commitments that no longer sparked positive energy in me. This choice freed up time for what mattered most: my academics, my athletic goals, and finding balance.

The memories I’ve made through sports are some of the most meaningful experiences I’ve had. Whether it was the intense climax of a tournament, bonding with teammates through shared moments of sportsmanship, or achieving personal milestones, these experiences have shaped me into the student-athlete I am today. When I started basketball in Grade 10, I had no idea how much resilience it would require. I doubted my abilities at first, but by the end of the season, I had made major improvements to my skills.

One of the most transformative moments for me this year was at a challenging cross-country meet hosted by SFS. Jogging up the steep hill twice, I felt my thoughts slipping and my pace faltering. The heat was

intense, and the course pushed me to my limits. But then I heard my teammates and coaches cheering me on. Their encouragement reignited my determination. That moment taught me the importance of resilience, not just in sports, but in every aspect of my life.

Being a student-athlete at Dwight has changed how I approach my daily life. I’ve learned perseverance, discipline, and balance. My experience has taught me the value of time management and the importance of focusing on what truly ignites my passions. By prioritizing the things that energize me, I’ve been able to dedicate myself more fully to both my studies and my athletic goals.

To younger Dwight students considering joining a sports team, my advice is simple: be bold, take on challenges, and ignite your spark of genius. Being part of a sports team will push you to grow, test your limits, and teach you invaluable lessons about yourself. But remember to find balance. I’ve made the mistake of trying to do everything at once, and it wasn’t sustainable. Let go of commitments that no longer bring you joy or align with your goals. Focus on what matters most to you and make time for the things that give you energy.

Sports at Dwight will give you resilience, friendships, and memories that shape you into a stronger, more focused version of yourself. Listen to your dreams, act on them, and never stop striving to become the best version of you.

OUR COMMUNITY

On October 2nd, the Dwight Seoul community gathered for the 4th Annual Family Golf Tournament at the beautiful SeoSeoul Country Club, a much-anticipated event that brought together golf enthusiasts, alumni, and parents for a day of friendly competition and camaraderie.

Dwight Seoul Hosts 4th Annual Family Golf Tournament

The highlight of the day was the participation of Hyeonho Kim, Class of 2023, who joined the tournament accompanied by three friends –graduates of other international schools in Seoul who are now pursuing their studies at universities in the United States. The young men will begin their 19-month military service commitment in South Korea at the end of October, temporarily pausing their academic journeys to fulfill this important duty. Their presence served as a poignant reminder of the shared values of dedication and service within our community.

The tournament offered Dwight parents and participants a chance to enjoy a beautiful day on the green, fostering connections and celebrating the spirit of togetherness. Events like these highlight the unique bonds that make the Dwight Seoul family so special.

We thank all participants for their enthusiasm and extend our best wishes to Hyeonho and his friends.

Moms & Dads Night Out Benefits Oak Tree Run

On October 24th, parents gathered for a memorable “Mom and Dad’s Night Out” at the Rumpus Room at the Mondrian Seoul Itaewon, enjoying an evening of fun and connection. Thanks to the generosity of our donors and sponsors, the event raised an impressive 1,400,000 in support of the Oak Tree Project, a remarkable organization that provides scholarships and mentoring to Korean orphans pursuing college education. The community’s spirit of giving continued on November 9th, with 40 parents, students, and faculty participating in the Oak Tree Run to further bolster the organization’s impactful efforts.

The Dwight Seoul Annual Family Golf Tournament provides a wonderful opportunity for families to connect and enjoy a day on the course. Beautiful weather and the excellent course contributed to a memorable event, filled with smiles and friendly competition. We can't wait for next year's tournament—and the pizza party for students of the winning team!

SPOTLIGHT!: A Night of Musical Theatre

This performance was more than a celebration of music and theatre—it was a celebration of community. Through the universal language of music, we explored profound themes of friendship, inclusion, and acceptance. Each song had been chosen not only for its melody and timeless roots to musical theatre but for the message it carries—one of understanding, empathy, and the power of connection.

This concert was a remarkable journey for everyone involved. Our students came together, crossing grade levels and forming bonds that will undoubtedly last well beyond the evening's final number. From the cast to the crew, these young artists have shown what it means to work as a team, lifting each other up and creating something truly special together.

Their dedication, creativity, and camaraderie are what made the night possible. They proved that inclusion isn’t just a theme—it’s a practice. It’s the way they support one another, respect each other’s talents, and embrace the diversity that made this performance shine.

The evening's entrance fees were of free-will-donation in which a percentage of the proceeds, 500,000, was collected and given to the Korean Unwed Mothers' Families Association (KUMFA). Audience attendees were generous in their donations both prior to the performance after being moved by the musical performances.

To all those who were able to join us that evening, thank you again for embarking on the heartfelt and inspiring journey with our students, and for being part of a night where the power of acceptance and friendship truly took center stage.
