In France, th e returning ad ult Elegant Tern S elega ns from Gironde was seen at Les Sables d'O lo nn e, Ve ndée, on 5-19 August. In late Octobe r, un settl ed weath er brought good numbers of Little Auk Alle alle to the coasts of western Europe; for in stan ee, in southern Sweden, 626 we re co unted on 30 October at Hovs H all ar, Skane, and in Denm ark, 1484 on 1 November at Gili elej e, Sja=l land, and 1500 past Farn e Island s, Northumberland, on 2 November. A Eurasian Scops Owl Otus scops stayed in Orkney fo r mu ch of October. In Norway, large numbers of Tengmalm's Owls Aego lius fun ereus we re reco rded on the move westwa rd in late September and ea rl y O ctober; until th e second week of October, already 51 indi vid uais we re trapped at the rin ging station on Li sta, Farsund, Vest-Agder, w ith a max imum of 21 on 5 October. A PaIlid Swift Apus pallidus was found moribund on North Ron aldsay, O rkn ey, Scotland, o n 26 October. Th e observer of an alleged Smyrna Kingfisher Halcyon smyrnensis on 21 jul y 1994 in Hunga ry (Dutch Birding 16 : 164, 1994) and an all eged Pi ne Grosbeak Pinicola enuclea tor in janu ary 1996 in Tirol, Austri a (D utch Birdin g 18: 41 , 1996) reported th at these sightings we re not submitted to the releva nt rariti es co mmittees; th erefore, for th e tim e being, these reports ca n best be ignored. In Norway, a White-winged Lark Melanocorypha leucoptera was reported at Fi skum va nnet, Övre Eiker, Buskerud, on 22 Octobe r; if co rrect, thi s is one of the most remarkabl e records of the month . A Cliff Swallow Hirundo pyrrhonota was reported at Church Norton, Sussex, England, on 1 October. The first Blyth's Pipit Anthus godlewskii for Germany stayed on Helgoland from 25 Septem ber to 2 October, be in g th e ea rli est ever fo r weste rn Europe. A nother was present at Sherin gham, Norfolk, En gland, on 14-1 6 October. In Sweden, six we re repo rted during A ugust-September and, in Norw ay, sin gles we re see n on 13 October at Farsund , VestAgder and on 23 October at Molen, Vestfo ld . Fi ve we re reported from Britain during September, including two first-winters on St M ary's, Sci ll y. In Egypt, up to eight African Pied Wagtails M aguimp we re co unted at Ab u Sim be l villageon 11 September. A first-year was present at Löt, Öland, Sweden, on 16 O ctober. The first Isabelline Wheatear for the Netherlands was seen at Maasvlakte, Zuid -Ho ll and, from 21 October until at least 8 November. In En gland, singles we re reported at Church Hougham, Kent, on 6 October and at Lizard, Cornwall, on 29 October. Pied Wheatears 0 pleschanka stayed at Mustasaa ri , Norrskär, Finland, on 3 October, at Stenasabadet, Ö land, on 15 October, at Kl epp, Roga land, Norway, on 19 October and at Portland, Dorset, England, on 25 October. A Desert Wheatear 0 deserti was bri efl y seen at Zeebrugge, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, on 24 October and the fifth for the Neth erl and s was a male at Den Helder, Noord-Holland, from 30 October until at least 9 November. A Rock Thrush Monticola saxa tilis stayed on Bryher, Scill y, from 28 September to 2 October. A White's Thrush Zoothera dauma was seen at Vä rmland snäs, Värm land, Sweden, on 26 September. The second Swainson's Thrush Catharus ustulatus for Norway turned up on 28 September on Utsira, w here also th e first was recorded (i n Septembe r 1974). In Scotland, one was seen on South U ist, W estern Isles, on 6 October. Unusual reports of Cetti's Warbier Cettia cetti ca me from Hortobágy and, on 28 September, from V lieland (w here poss ibl y th e sa me bird was rin ged on 12 October). A first-w inter Pallas's Grasshopper Warbier Locustella certhiola was ringed at Portl and Bill, Dorset, England, on 13 September and anoth er was seen on Fair IsIe on 17 September. lanceolated Warblers L lanceolata we re rin ged on Fair Isle on 13 September and at Spurn, East Yorksh ire, England, on 21 September and a third was watched at Rimac, Lin co ln shire, England, on 22 September.
