Dear Alumni and Friends of the Durban University of Technology,

Wearepleasedtopresentour2024editionoftheDUTConnect Magazine. By now I am sure you are familiar with the purpose of this magazine. We trust that you have enjoyed our previous issues and we appreciate the feedback we have received from some of you,our readers.
Our theme for this edition is, aptly, the “power of connection”. One of our key objectives as the Advancement and Alumni Relations Unit is to promote and establish channels and programmes to facilitate connection between the alumni of DUT to their alma mater. I believe we need to connect now more than ever before. Among the many lessons we have learnt from our COVID experience is that, as human beings, connection to and with each other is critical. We heard of multiple reports indicating that people who were isolated because of the lockdowns, were suffering from a variety of mental health conditions. So, it is critical that we value and nurture relationships.
The Advancement and Alumni Relations Unit at DUT is committed to establishing, maintaining and nurturing
relationships with our alumni and other stakeholders and we do this through a variety of programmes and initiatives. For example,on the 24th of June 2024,we hosted anAlumni Business Networking Breakfast Session where we invited Alumni entrepreneurs and business people to engage on a variety of issues around entrepreneurship development and support. This session was informed by our ENVISION2030 Strategy, which is characterized by a commitment to the promotion of, inter alia, innovation and entrepreneurship. It was also informed by feedback and experiences received from alumni which signaled a need to provide a platform to support alumni entrepreneurs.
I trust that you will enjoy reading our latest instalment and be invigorated to continue pursuing your dreams despite the many challenges that may lie before you. Navigating Your Professional Path: Building Meaningful Relationships
Arusha Dasrath, of Supreme Consultancy, offers insights into the importance of connections and networking. Arusha is an Industrial Psychologist with a wealth of experience in Human Resource, focusing on how to in昀氀uence workplace and structural decisions through the utilisation of the relevant tools and resources.
My experiences have taught me that connections are threads that weave the fabric of our existence. Networking cultivates these threads of connection into a robust fabric of opportunities and collaboration. My journey from tertiary education is a testament to the power of nurturing relationships as each encounter has woven a uniqueness into my personal and professional growth. Networking has brought about opportunities and collaborations which have shaped my life.
Networking is often portrayed as a buzzword in professional circles, yet its signi昀椀cance cannot be overstated, especially from students embarking on their journey through tertiary education. As a student myself, decades ago, I initially underestimated the profound impact that forming connections would have on my career trajectory.Little did I realise that these relationships would become instrumental in my professional growth, enabling me to build a successful consultancy years later.
When I re昀氀ect on my own experiences, I realise that networking was more than just exchanging numbers at events or adding people as contacts on LinkedIn. It was about forging genuine connections with peers, lecturers, and professionals in my 昀椀eld of study. These connections served as pillars of support and sources of invaluable knowledge throughout my academic journey.
Learning beyond the classroom
One of the primary bene昀椀ts of networking as a student is the opportunity to learn beyond the con昀椀nes of the classroom.Engaging with professors outside of lectures allowed me to delve deeper into topics of interest, and gain insights into real-world applications, and develop a more nuanced understanding of my chosen 昀椀eld.
Career guidance and mentorship
Establishing connections with professionals who walked the path before you can provide invaluable career guidance and mentorship. I was fortunate to 昀椀nd mentors who not only offered advice but shared their personal experiences and industry insights. Their guidance helped me navigate career choices and develop the skills to succeed.
Access to opportunities
Networking opens doors to various opportunities such as internships, research projects and job placements. Through
connections made during my undergraduate years, I secured an internship that provided me with hands-on experience and exposure that paved the way for future career opportunities.Giving off your best during every opportunity initiates the possibility of more prospects. These experiences are instrumental in shaping professional journeys of all those who make every second count.
Maintaining long-term relationships
The true value of networking often reveals itself over time. As I progressed in my career, I made a concerted effort to maintain relationships with lecturers, colleagues, and industry peers. This investment in nurturing connections proved invaluable when decades later, these encounters rekindled relationships that signi昀椀cantly impact my consultancy.
Finding synergy and connecting with similar interests enables the birth of deep connections and this goes beyond just expanding your contact list. It involves identifying individuals with whom you share common interests, values and goals. These shared interests form the basis of mutually bene昀椀cial relationships that endure over time.
Seeking authentic connections is key to forming meaningful connections when the prioritisation is on building relationships based on genuine interests and mutual respect rather than solely on focusing on persona gain.Authentic connections are more likely to withstand the test of time and yield fruitful collaborations.
Creating synergy occurs when individuals with complementary skills and perspectives come together to achieve shared objectives. In my experience, collaborating with individuals who bring different strengths to the table has resulted in innovative solutions and enhanced outcomes for projects. Embrace diversity within your network to foster creativity and innovation.
Paying it forward for the greater good, networking should not be viewed solely to advance one’s own career aspirations. It is equally important to pay it forward by supporting and uplifting others within your network and those who were once like you. Being a catalyst for positive change and contributing to the success of others can be immensely ful昀椀lling .
For those reading this article,my message to you is that networking should be viewed as a cornerstone for success and should be used not only for your own gain, but for enabling others so that you may share in their success stories. As you embark on your journey ahead, remember that genuine connections based on shared interests are key to fostering meaningful collaborations.Embrace the opportunity to pay it forward by supporting others and contribute to collective success. By doing so, you are not only advancing your own career aspirations, but also contributing to a vibrant and interconnected professional community.

5 REASONS FINANCIAL LITERACY IS IMPORTANT
Financial literacy is crucial to South Africa as it enables individuals to make informed decisions about their money, save for the future, and avoid debt. Here are some key reasons why 昀椀nancial literacy is important in South Africa:
1. Reduces poverty and inequality. 2. Improves savings and investments.
3. Enhances economic growth. 4. Empowers individuals.
5. Addresses 昀椀nancial exclusion.
WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW?
Financial literacy is a unique journey for each person, but what it boils down to is understanding how much you earn, spend, want, and can grow.
To understand this, the advice is to:
1. Start with a budget. It’s as simple as monitoring the money you earn every month, and the amount you spend. Remember that all the small purchases add up, so do all the automated payments for apps and streaming services. The purpose of the budget is to adjust things, so you don’t spend more than you earn!
2. Decide on a savings goal so that you have a tangible target in mind.
3. Allow the power of compound interest to grow your money because as Albert Einstein said “Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. He who understands it earns it, he who doesn’t, pays it.” Compound interest is the interest you earn for letting interest accumulate. In other words the longer you leave the money in your savings vehicle the more it will grow.
SOME PRACTICAL TIPS:
1. Make money real: You work hard to earn your money. Before you spend your hard-earned income on something, ask yourself how many hours of work it costs.
2. Small changes make a difference: Make money a daily habit even if it is 10 minutes a day to keep a money journal or check your expense tracker. Remember it only takes 21 days to develop a habit, according to Maxwell Maltz
3. Credit health: Knowledge is power. Learn about in昀氀ation, the cost of lending, how interest rates work.
4. Get out of the debt trap: Access your credit report, understand how many creditors you owe and how much of your income is spent on debt.
5. Financial goal setting: Make room in your budget to save. Just like spending, saving is a choice.
6. Investing vs saving: Learn about investing and how to make your money grow. There are many vehicles to help achieve your goal.
7. Protect yourself and your loved ones: Make sure you have an up-to-date Will, as this is one of the most important documents in your 昀椀nancial life. Do an insurance audit at least once a year to ensure you have the right insurance cover in place for your stage of life.
Old Mutual has many free online tools that concentrate on 昀椀nancial literacy, including the ON THE MONEY programme and a podcast, to help people manage money well and achieve 昀椀nancial stability.
There are also various initiatives to promote 昀椀nancial literacy, such as the 昀椀nancial literacy programme, Money Smart Week, by the National Treasury, and the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA).

future-proofing your skills
If you are reading this article as an alumnus of the Durban University of Technology you are likely graduated and engaged in the world of work, with few or many years of work experience, self-employed, or actively engaged in seeking opportunities. No matter which of these stages applies to you, the need to grow constantly and re昀椀ne and future-proof your skills will be relevant.Understanding which skills, attitudes and abilities are important, and how to develop them, is what this article is about. Four primary trends are currently shaping the world of work:
1. Digital transformation and arti昀椀cial intelligence
2. Increased automation
3. The rise of the GIG economy
4. The increased demand for technical skills, with data analytics as a key driver
These trends require us to be adaptable,昀氀exible tech-savvy,and to truly embrace learning as a lifelong pursuit.
defining the skills of the future
You may well ask,“What do we really mean, by skills of the future, and what are these skills?” A widely used model, developed by the World Economic Forum, helps build a common language and understanding of the skills of the future.

[Source: https://widgets.weforum.org/nve-2015/chapter1.html]

The model distinguishes between foundational literacies, competencies, and character qualities. Some of the foundational literacies, such as literacy and numeracy, will be developed through education but many of the competencies and character qualities are acquired and learned through having to deal with complex challenges or through trial and error as we navigate a changing world.
Of course, not all literacies will be required in all roles, for example, scienti昀椀c and ICT literacy may be speci昀椀c to certain roles. However, a study that analysed two million online job postings revealed that the top 昀椀ve skills that employers were consistently looking for were communication, creativity, collaboration, creative problem-solving and critical thinking1.The South African Graduate Employer’sAssociation’s (SAGEA) 2023 Development Benchmarking Study among top graduate employers revealed that the top three skills being developed among the young talent they employ are critical thinking, communication and collaboration.Evidently, these are critical skills!
Space does not allow for a detailed description of the skills listed but, should you wish to explore these, please read more about this from theWorld Economic Forum: link.
There is an additional skill that does not appear on the list – the possession of which is going to become the next superpower – arti昀椀cial intelligence (AI) skills. The ability to understand and effectively deployAI as a productivity multiplier in the workplace will, increasingly, be a sought-after skill and competence.

how to develop your skills
Future-proo昀椀ng your skills for the 21st century involves cultivating a blend of technical expertise, soft skills, adaptability, and continuous learning. Some strategies to help you future-proof your skills are:
• Embrace Technological Literacy: Stay updated with technology trends relevant to your 昀椀eld. This could include pro昀椀ciency in digital tools and understanding automation,AI, and data analytics. Experiment with generative AI and learn how to use it to your advantage.
business start-ups have been born out of a simple problem that needs solving! Be on the lookout for problems that need to be solved and opportunities to disrupt traditional ways of doing things!
• Ethical and Social Awareness: Develop an understanding of ethical issues related to technology, sustainability, and social responsibility. Be conscious of considering the ethical and environmental impacts of each decision you make.

• Develop Critical Thinking: Cultivate the ability to analyse information critically, solve complex problems, and make informed decisions based on data and evidence.
• Focus on Soft Skills: Skills, such as communication, teamwork, adaptability, and emotional intelligence are crucial in a rapidly changing work environment. Take advantage of every opportunity to collaborate with others – both in the work environment and your day-to-day life. Getting involved in volunteer groups, community initiatives, interest groups or recreational activities will provide you with platforms to grow your soft skills.
• Continuous Learning: Develop a habit of lifelong learning. Stay curious and proactive about acquiring new knowledge and skills. This could be through formal education, online courses, workshops,or self-study.
• Adaptability and Resilience: Be prepared to adapt to changes and bounce back from setbacks. The ability to navigate uncertainty and learn from mistakes and failures is essential.
• GlobalAwareness: In a connected world, understanding global perspectives, cultural differences, and international trends can provide a competitive edge. Identify reliable sources of news and information on media that appeal to you and follow these to stay informed.Be intentional about who or what you follow on social media and platforms such as LinkedIn–curate a following that develops your knowledge and skills.
• Entrepreneurial Mindset: Even within traditional employment, having an entrepreneurial mindset—being innovative, proactive, and solution-oriented—can lead to new opportunities and growth. Numerous examples of
• Network and Build Relationships: Establishing a strong network can provide support, mentorship, and opportunities for collaboration and career advancement. Some people are more natural at networking than others. If this is not your strong suit, you may need to work harder at it. Reach out to family and friends who can help you to build your network. When you meet someone you’d like to have in your network, be intentional about establishing contact with them.
Remaining competitive in a dynamic job market and futureproo昀椀ng your skills will be important no matter where you are on your career journey. Knowing which skills are valued and how to grow your own skill base will help you to navigate your career.

Durban’s Shores to SABC Prime-Time.
Blain Herman is “It’s
Blain Herman’s journalism career spans over twenty years and his career highlights are outstanding, yet the words that come to mind to describe this industry great are ‘humble’, ‘wise’ and‘approachable’.BlainHermanisthefaceofthe SABC current affairs show It’s Topical, which airs every Sunday. He is also the Executive Producer for the Full View – a daily news programme on the SABC News channel.
Durban was the vibrant backdrop for Blain Herman’s formative years. During high school, Blain discovered a passion for writing, particularly poetry. This creative outlet, coupled with a promising interest in radio, led his mother to encourage him to study journalism. Blain says his mother played a pivotal role in his career path, even supporting Blain at his entrance interview at the then ML Sultan campus.Blain says the DUT provided him with both theoretical and practical knowledge, encouraging him to think critically, understand his audience, and appreciate his vocation.
Blain’s years at DUT were marked by a sense of community and the forging of lifelong friendships. He particularly praises seasoned lecturers Kubi Rama, Dr Sinthie Qono, Deseni Soobben and Graham Greer for their knowledgeable instruction. Balancing his studies with an internship at the SABC was particularly challenging, but taught him resilience and perseverance. Blain says, “My advice to those going through a similar challenge is push through the pain. It’s worth it at the end.During this testing time you really discover yourself and your limits but also your potential. As one of my mentors told me, sometimes you must go through a test, to get to your best.”
A de昀椀ning moment during his time at DUT occurred in his second year when a lecturer’s intervention taught him humility.
Topical”
“There was, however, a particular event at DUT that would shape my future forever. It was also an important life lesson for me in humility,” explains Blain.
Blain relates that a lecturer had called him in to speak about his work and his potential.“As a 21-year-old, I thought I knew everything there was to know about journalism,so with that bad attitude, I went up for the meeting.”
The lecturer spoke to him but “I was hearing none of that and I remember arrogantly looking down at my watch,as if to say,are you done? Big mistake!
“It got to a point where she had enough with my 昀氀ippant attitude, after which, she promptly kicked me out of her of昀椀ce.
“I headed down to the cafeteria to join my friends but kept thinking, what on earth are you doing Blain? She was just trying to help you.
“I mustered up the courage and went back to the of昀椀ce to apologise for my disgraceful attitude. The next day, I received a call from her to say the SABC was looking for a young journalist. She said I should think about applying and see if it is a good 昀椀t for me … 21 years later, I’m still with the public broadcaster.” This experience underscored the importance of humility and the value of learning from others. It also encapsulates his life motto ‘Don’t let your failures de昀椀ne you. Let it teach you’, said by Barack Obama.

Blain started his impressive career with the SABC as an intern. His 昀椀rst job was to read hourly news bulletins on Lotus FM. He then became a producer and presenter for the radio’s current affairs programme Newsbreak.Television news was his next calling where he covered a range of stories. Currently, Blain serves as the Executive Producer for The FullView,a primetime news programme on the SABC NEWS channel. His role

involves attending editorial meetings, commissioning stories, and ensuring the programme’s quality. In 2022, Blain started presenting It’s Topical, a programme that engages South Africans on current issues.
“It’s an honour and privilege to anchor It’s Topical every Sunday. It’s Topical is an interactive programme focusing on various relevant topics that have made headlines during the week. This programme is the perfect platform for South Africans from all walks of life. It’s tailor-made to allow citizens to engage about issues and events that directly impact on them.”

Accounting for the high energy associated with the fast-paced, interactive nature of the programme,Blain says,“Someone once told me,‘When the butter昀氀ies stop, then get out of the business’. For me, as long as there’s passion and you want and need to do your best, the butter昀氀ies will always be circling.”
Blain’s career has been punctuated by signi昀椀cant milestones, including co-anchoring the special broadcast of Archbishop Emeritus DesmondTutu’s funeral, covering the civil war in Libya, andreportingonSouthAfrica’spartnershipwithBRICScountries. These experiences highlighted the power of storytelling in connecting with audiences and making a difference.
Blain believes that networking and professional connections have been crucial in his career advancement. Trust, built through honesty and hard work, has opened doors and created opportunities. He stresses that in our multicultural society, forming genuine connections requires understanding and respecting diverse cultural heritages. Storytelling plays a vital role in fostering these connections by evoking emotions and promoting mutual respect. Blain says that DUT’s sense of community has profoundly in昀氀uenced his personal and professional growth. His mentor,Ashok Ramsarup,a fellow DUT alumnus, has guided him in understanding journalism’s role in connecting people and making sense of the world.
Today,Blain balances his busy career with family life, with Melaney, his wife of 17 years, and their 13-year-old son,Christian:“All my spare time is devoted to my wife and son. I 昀椀nd great joy and peace just being with my family.” To the youth, Blain emphasises the importance of education and perseverance. He advises them to believe in their goals, stay the course, and always strive for excellence.

The name “Omninela Medical” embodies their mission to “seek every solution”, to re昀氀ect their commitment to innovative and personalised healthcare.

Personal Lives and Philosophy
Balancing their professional and personal lives, the brothers prioritise work-life integration. When not driving their company to the next great height, these energetic brothers can be found running, swimming, hiking, sur昀椀ng or volunteering as baristas at their church’s gatherings. A Journey of Resilience and Connection:
The Story of Ntobeko Mafu
Ntobeko Mafu is justi昀椀ably proud to be called a mentor and food security activist. In today’s dire international and domestic economic climate, is there anything more honourable than to want to provide food to communities? But being a farmer and a trainer in agriculture are just two aspects of this energetic young woman. Ntobeko is also a published author, public speaker, mother, and an award-winning entrepreneur. Ntobeko lives her life according to her motto “I aspire to inspire before I expire”.
Early Life
Born into a complex and tumultuous family environment, Ntobeko navigated the challenges of growing up in a home marked by gender-based violence. As the youngest of many siblings, she often found herself in the position of understanding and mediating within her family. Ntobeko’s academic journey was non-traditional;she frequently changed schools which made it dif昀椀cult to form lasting friendships, leading her to 昀椀nd solace in school libraries. Upon completing her secondary education, she was accepted into the American Business and Technology University in Missouri. However, familial obligations and her father’s illness prevented her from pursuing this opportunity, compelling her to take on the role of his caregiver during his 昀椀nal months.
Ntobeko’s Ties with DUT
Determined to continue her education despite these setbacks, Ntobeko enrolled at DUT in Human Resources Management. Initially,it seemed like a mere happenstance, but it soon became

apparent that she was precisely where she needed to be.DUT’s emphasis on innovative thinking and future planning through its ENVISION2030 motto resonated deeply with her, igniting a passion for lifelong learning and personal development.
Her time at DUT was marked by rigorous academic work and part-time employment, balancing roles as a cashier and various other positions to support herself. The challenges of completing a three-year diploma and an additional one-year advanced diploma in HRM while managing personal responsibilities were immense.Nonetheless,Ntobeko thrived, participating in multiple development programmes and winning a writing competition. In 2021, Ntobeko published her 昀椀rst book, Letters to Whoever Needs to Hear This: Notes from Me to You.This accomplishment was pivotal, setting the stage for future success in business and public speaking.
Her af昀椀liation with DUT also led her to represent SouthAfrica at a Model United Nations conference in Bangkok,Thailand, where she discussed food insecurity. These milestones are a testament to her hard work and determination. Ntobeko is candid about what it takes to succeed:“Nothing came easy for me. I worked extra hard for everything I ever attained.I didn’t sleep, practising pitches, writing proposals and attending multiple development programmes, driven by the dream of being an entrepreneurial, innovative, adaptive individual.”
Career and Daily Life
Ntobeko has utilised her writing, public speaking and HR skills in her 3-fold business Madame ClucksA Lot.She says the business is best described as a “sustainable free range broiler production and organic crop production farm that specialises in training and development”.

The delightfully named Madame Clucks A Lot, with an equally delightful website, re昀氀ects her passion for sustainable and organic farming, specialising in free-range broiler production and crop cultivation. “The farmer title is the one I carry with the most pride, simply because I know I am operating beyond my purpose by feeding people healthy non-genetically modi昀椀ed foods and empowering them with the knowledge of growing their own food too,” says Ntobeko.
Ntobeko’s burgeoning business acumen is starting to rake in awards.Notably, she recently received accreditation as a Mentor, Facilitator and Presenter from the International Agricultural Academy for Africa in crop production. She was a Bevisioneers, the Mercedes Benz fellowship fellow of the 2023/4 Cohort, for which she won a prize. Ntobeko is currently a participant of the Anzisha Prize Fellowship (which successfully supports and champions young entrepreneurs for over 10 years). This further exempli昀椀es her commitment to personal and professional growth.
In September 2023, Ntobeko curated and hosted a free farming training for her community,“Spring Day Farm Day”, with over 60 participants, and the likes of Alex Mthiyane from Gagasi FM and many more big names in attendance, in the rural area of Nhlazatshe location. The day focused on crop production, broiler production, 昀椀nancial management and opportunity sharing. In July 2024, Ntobeko was nominated an “Unsung Hero of 2024” by Sunday World News in the category of agriculture, mining, sustainability, and the environment.
Ntobeko balances her many roles as a farmer, writer, public speaker, and entrepreneur. Her daily routine is a testament to her dedication and discipline, starting early in the morning with agricultural activities and family responsibilities before transitioning to business operations. As a mother to a six-yearold son, she strives to maintain a work-life balance, dedicating time to her family while working tirelessly to grow her business. Her role as a mentor for the National Youth Development Agency allows her to give back to the community, supporting the development of young entrepreneurs.
The Power of Connection
The theme of “The Power of Connection” resonates profoundly with Ntobeko. For her, connections are synonymous with freedom and opportunity. She believes that connecting with one’s purpose and aligning with supportive individuals is crucial for
personal and professional advancement. Her time at DUT exempli昀椀ed this belief, as she leveraged the resources and networks available to her, resulting in signi昀椀cant opportunities and achievements.Ntobeko expresses,“When they say“DUT 4 LIFE … this is not only among ourselves as alumni but also with DUT as an entity itself. This magazine is an example of that community.”

Humanitarian at Heart
Dr Justin Bibee exempli昀椀es the power of compassion and connections in creating a more empathetic and just world.
It is a dif昀椀cult task to summarise who Dr Justin Bibee is and what he has accomplished. He is the recipient of countless international awards and the author of several in昀氀uential books. A Mayoral Proclamation from the City of Warwick proclaimed January 18, 2019, as Justin Bibee Day. He is an acclaimed human rights advocate and, as the Assistant Director of Refugee Resettlement at the Dorcas International Institute of Rhode Island, leads Rhode Island’s largest refugee resettlement effort. But perhaps the epitome of Justin can be summarised in the simplest form, the thing treasured by us all – he gives people a home.
Justin,a native of Cranston,Rhode Island, grew up in a household where education was paramount. His parents, recognising the power of knowledge, instilled in him a strong work ethic and a relentless pursuit of academic excellence. As a 昀椀rst-generation college graduate, Justin’s path was shaped by the unwavering support of his family, who celebrated his successes. Today, his beloved wife, Yousra, is a mainstay as he navigates a career dedicated to peacebuilding and refugee resettlement.
Justin’s academic journey led him to earn a PhD in public administration focusing on peacebuilding. His research, particularly his thesis titled “Peace Education as a Peacebuilding Tool in the Western Sahara Region,” delved into the complex dynamics of peacebuilding in con昀氀ict-ridden societies. The Western Sahara con昀氀ict, Africa’s longest-standing and often overlooked dispute, served as the backdrop for his study. Justin employed an action research approach, utilising peace education to foster dialogue and empathy between Moroccans and Sahrawis. His 昀椀ndings underscored the transformative potential of peace education in promoting lasting peace in deeply divided regions.
A pivotal experience that shaped Justin’s career was his work with the United Nations in Tanzania’s refugee camps. His dedication to supporting refugees and his leadership skills earned him a promotion toAssistant Director of Refugee Resettlement. In this role, he now oversees Rhode Island’s largest refugee
resettlement effort at the Dorcas International Institute. Here, Justin leads a dedicated team of resettlement case managers, serving as the primary point of contact for refugees arriving in the state.
Justin’s journey in refugee assistance began in 2013 with academic research on con昀氀ict and peacebuilding, leading him to join the United Nations in 2017. His work in Tanzania’s refugee camps, supporting Burundian and Congolese refugees, was both challenging and deeply rewarding. In 2021, he transitioned to the Dorcas International Institute, where he initially worked as a resettlement case manager, addressing the immediate needs of refugees, from securing housing to accessing essential services. His efforts have had far-reaching impact, assisting refugees from diverse regions, including Angola, Afghanistan,Burundi,Cambodia, Central African Republic, Colombia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Dominican Republic, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Iraq, Jordan, Liberia, Nepal, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Ukraine,Venezuela, andWestern Sahara.
Justin’s contributions to academia and humanitarianism have been recognised through his recent appointment as a Global Fellow (2024) at the Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Studies at Brown University. This fellowship allows him to collaborate with a network of scholars and practitioners, driving interdisciplinary research to address the root causes of human rights abuses and advance global humanitarian efforts.
Re昀氀ecting on his years as a tertiary student at DUT, Justin recalls a period of intense growth and learning. Balancing a fulltime job as a refugee resettlement case manager with his PhD studies required meticulous time management and unwavering dedication. His academic advisor,Dr Sylvia Kaye, played a crucial role in his development, motivating him to reach his full potential.
One of Justin’s fondest memories from DUT involves a serendipitous connection with Dr Kaye. Living in Maui, Hawaii, when he decided to apply to DUT, Justin was unaware that Dr Kaye had ties to his home state of Rhode Island. Their paths crossed unexpectedly when Justin moved back to Rhode Island to work with refugees. They met for coffee twice, blending discussions of research with shared experiences of their state. These meetings reinforced the global nature of academic and personal connections. “It was heart-warming to realise how small the world can be and how our professional and personal lives can intertwine in the most delightful ways,” recalls Justin.
In his current role as Assistant Director for Refugee Resettlement at the Dorcas International Institute, Justin’s

daily routine is both demanding and rewarding. Leading Rhode Island’s largest refugee resettlement effort, he ensures that operations run smoothly and ef昀椀ciently. His background as a refugee resettlement case manager provides him with invaluable empathy and understanding, allowing him to support his team effectively. Each day, he works tirelessly to empower his team and facilitate refugees’ integration into new communities, providing comprehensive support to help them build stable and ful昀椀lling lives.
Justin’s approach to his work and community involvement is profoundly in昀氀uenced by Sergio Vieira de Mello, a 昀椀gure he deeply admires. De Mello’s radical approach and willingness to bend the rules to support those in need resonate with Justin. A sign in his of昀椀ce reading “What would Sergio do?” serves as a constant reminder to make tough decisions with compassion and integrity.
Outside of his professional life, Justin 昀椀nds joy in collecting art. His collection, known as The Justin Bibee Collection, spans continents and centuries, featuring sculptures, masks, prints, jewellery, weapons, and clothing from Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas. Opening his collection to the public in 2020 was a signi昀椀cant milestone, allowing museums, galleries, and educational institutions to borrow these treasures and explore our global cultural heritage.
Justin is also deeply committed to supporting education, particularly in regions affected by Taliban rule. Serving on the board of BalePravaaz and involved with Sabawoon Education Academy, he strives to provide education and scholarships to girls in Afghanistan and Pakistan, enabling them to escape challenging circumstances. His dedication to supporting refugees in achieving their educational goals is a testament to his commitment to making a positive impact.
For today’s youth, Justin offers a message of determination and passion. Re昀氀ecting on his childhood dream of becoming a professional baseball player, he encourages young people to chase their dreams with perseverance and a positive mindset. “Do exactly what you want to do,” he advises.“Don’t let others’ doubts or the fear of failure hold you back. Believe in your potential and stay dedicated to your goals.”
Justin’s work in peacebuilding and refugee resettlement touches lives and fosters a sense of global interconnectedness.

A pivotal experience that shaped Justin’s career was his work with the United Nations in Tanzania’s refugee camps. His dedication to supporting refugees and his leadership skills earned him a promotion to Assistant Director of Refugee Resettlement. Mandela Day Initiative: Tips for Employment

“I learnt many lessons and acquired skills in these part-time jobs...”
Much can be said about making that 昀椀rst break into the world of work.Young graduates have often lamented the dif昀椀culty in getting that 昀椀rst job since there is usually a work experience requirement.Young graduates often argue that if you have been studying before the past three or four years, when would you get the work experience. What I think is important and what helped me is that I began working part-time at the age of sixteen delivering newspapers,I was in high school at the time.I then started working at a supermarket when I completed matric during the December vacation period. This carried on into my 昀椀rst and second year of study at University. I went onto take on many part-time jobs during my studies. This meant that I already had work experience.Even though the work experience I got initially, was not directly related to what I was studying.
However,it did lead to discipline-related part-time jobs. The critical aspect is that I had work experience. I must also say that I learnt many lessons and acquired skills in these part-time jobs that have helped in my current job. I would, therefore, encourage students to try and get part-time jobs. In addition, students should consider volunteering at various Non-pro昀椀t Organisations (NPO’s). These organisations always need additional support, even if its on weekends. That way you even have someone who could write a reference letter for you when looking for a permanent job. It is also important to ensure that, whether you are volunteering or holding down a part-time job, you apply yourself, work hard and be open to learning new skills.A lot of potential employers are concerned about the lack of soft skills that new recruits enter the job market with. Part-time jobs and volunteer opportunities are the perfect place learn and acquire these soft skills.

“become a contributing member to the upliftment of society.”
Stepping in to the world of work can be quite daunting. You are faced with countless questions about your readiness, and whether you would 昀椀nd employment and become a contributing member to the upliftment of society. I recall having those same fears. When the opportunities did present themselves with regards to my possible employment, this is what I did:
• I thoroughly researched the company – it gave me an idea of what the company was about as well as its operations and culture.
• I researched interview questions to help me formulate appropriate responses.
• I ensured that my CV and requisite skills were aligned to the job requirements
• I ensured that I had a well-written cover letter
Best wishes to you all as you navigate the world of work!
Mrs Nishie Pramchund Govender Manager: Fundraising and Alumni Relations

“Dedication and a willingness to learn...“
My journey into being integrated into mainstream employment began at the entry-level,where dedication and a willingness to learn are paramount. Starting at the bottom provided me a valuable opportunity to grasp the intricacies of the job and industry. I ensured I embraced each task with enthusiasm, no matter how small, as it laid the foundation for my growth. I continuously showed initiative by seeking out challenges and offering solutions. I learnt the importance of building strong relationships with colleagues and supervisors which fostered a supportive network and opened doors and new prospects.
My advice is to always stay adaptable and proactive in expanding your skill set through continuous learning and feedback. Remember, every experience, setback, and success contributes to your journey upward in the professional world.

How to prepare for an interview
Look presentable, spray on your best con昀椀dence and know why you are there.
Body language and non-verbal communication is very important in an interview. They see what you’re not saying. It’s always imperative to be knowledgeable of the organisation you’ve applied to and being interviewed for. Use all resources you can 昀椀nd to investigate about the organisation. But that’s the easy part. The dif昀椀cult part lies at “selling yourself”.
They can read about your accomplishments and educational history on your CV but they need to know YOU.YOU must know yourself and be able to showcase your best side but also be able to show how you’re willing to learn and become better. No one is perfect and interviewers know this, so be human, be sure, be well-informed but most importantly,They needYOU to beYOU.

Love what you do no matter what it is.
I completed my high school education at Mthui Secondary School in Ozwathini,a remote institution without internet or computers.Despite my lack of experience with computers, I found them fascinating. I started working as a waitress at MIMMOS around the same time as I arrived in Durban in search of a school. In order to pay for my tuition, I worked my way through college and university.
These occupations helped me grow as a person and taught me a lot, including the fact that not everyone wants to see you succeed or achieve what they want to but are unable to do. Recognizing various work settings, knowing when to participate, or simply keeping out a negative vibe around you. I gained acknowledgment for my work and was able to enjoy going to work, which was the most essential lesson I learnt there. I also learned to love and thrive at my profession.I developed that environment for myself, and it’s how I’ve survived my entire professional career.
My advise to you is to like your work no matter what it is you do, as this will help you get the con昀椀dence to learn new skills and become pro昀椀cient in it,earning you the respect and recognition you are due.
