How to Become a Better Goal Scorer

Every hockey player loves to score goals. Whether it’s their first ever goal, the game winning goal or the championship final goal, we all want and love to score goals. Goals aren’t everything, but they instill confidence in the player. Scoring goals can be a great feeling, however when is the right time to shoot? Which corner should you shoot for? Top left, or bottom right? Top right or bottom left? Maybe five hole?

Should you deke? Should you pass? Many things go through the players head in a split second. Here are some tips to help you score more goals!

Scoring Tips; •

Practice makes perfect. Improve your shot with practice. Shoot to score! It can be high or low. Pick an open corner, transfer your weight, close your blade, aim and follow through. Snipe!

Shooting well improves confidence. The more confident you are the more goals you’ll score!

Look, Aim, Release. Work on weight transfer and body position.

Make it quick. Sometimes a corner is open for a split second. Don’t hesitate!

Change the angle of your shot. Keeping the goalie guessing is important. Changing your angle and body movement can open up the corners and make it easier to find the twine.

Strong net front presence. Getting to an open area in front and around the net is critical. Always be prepared to receive a pass so you are ready to release the puck and score. Deflecting shots and being ready for rebounds will improve your scoring touch.

Use your brain. Reading and reacting to the play and situation. Communicate and be aware.

Some examples; •

If the goalie is too far out of the net, look to deke, fake a move to your left then right or vice versa to make the goalie guess which way you’re going and look for the open twine and let it go.

If the goalie is too far back in the crease, look for an open corner, aim and rip it. Don’t take too long because the goalie will take away that corner.

What if the goalie is down? Look for top corners. What if the goalie is up, look for low corners (and possibly high corners). Adjusting to the situation and reacting to the goalie is key.

Faith Ellis Team Ambassador Submitted by Grandview Kids To say Faith Wallace is a hockey fan, would be an understatement.

The seven-year-old girl who lives with Cerebral Palsy may not be able to get on the ice to take part in her favourite sport, but that hasn’t stopped her from getting in the game.

Faith, a client of Grandview Children’s Centre, recently joined its mentorship program which has given her the opportunity to become part of the Whitby Wolves hockey organization.

The rep hockey team, made up of nine and ten-year-old girls, has welcomed Faith on as the team ambassador.

“This experience has given Faith the feeling of being included regardless of her disability. She loves watching the girls play and cheer them on. You can frequently hear her howl like a wolf as part of her cheering,” explained her mom, Amanda Wallace -Gallant. “She absolutely loves that she gets to sit and cheer the girls on with the team jersey that was made especially for her with her name on it as if she was just another one of the girls.”

Durham Total Sports and the Oshawa Generals OHL team recognized Faith by naming her the Athlete of the Game at the November 13 game at Oshawa’s Tribute Communities Centre.

Faith’s teammates with the Whitby Wolves heard the news that their new friend was being honoured and showed up to

surprise her; lining the tunnel to cheer her on as she made her way off the ice during the first intermission, where she was honoured.

“It was so heartwarming to see the inclusion of special needs children. I was overwhelmed with joy to the point that my face actually hurt from smiling so much when we saw Faith’s girl’s hockey team there to surprise her,” said Wallace. “Having them come and greet her as she does for them when she came off the ice was amazing! Faith’s face lit up right away when she saw all of the girls.”

“For Faith, this is an experience that has made her feel like she is no different than any other child. Although she has limitations, every step was taken to make her feel welcomed and comfortable. When we look at the pictures from that night her face lights up as if she is there in that moment again. This experience brought her great confidence to be in a big crowd and enjoy her moment,” Wallace added.

Are You a Leader of One? By: Jeff Roux, BPE, CSCS, TSCC - Gold

There is a great mantra that we use at TWIST that says,

Taking care of yourself, being accountable to your health and wellness, and setting yourself up for success is infectious. People recognize it, people respect it, and people react to it. It sets the tone for other people and suddenly they want to follow your example.

This is how a movement begins.

Many of us in Canada think of ourselves as healthy, active and athletic. We think of our recent successes in the Olympics and with our Professional athletes and kids performing at high levels in numerous elite sports.

We look at other Countries, most notably the US and say, ok we are definitely better off than many of them when it comes to health, obesity and activity. The truth is we are actually failing. For every kid who is athletic, active, and high performing there are many more who don’t get enough activity, don’t eat nutritious food every day, and don’t look up from their devices long enough to communicate, interact and just play.

Participaction just released a study of kids from 37 countries. From this they created a report card on different area and guess what? We got a D- ! A D F-ing MINUS! “The consolidated findings show Canada has aboveglobal average grades in physical activity infrastructure and programs, yet is trailing at the back of the pack in grades that measure physical activity and sedentary behaviour.”

This means we have the technology, the programs, the knowledge and the people to be successful, but for some reason it is NOT happening. Unfortunately for us and for our kids, being active has become a choice and not a way of life. Slovenia is the big winner in the study with an A- overall and 81% of kids age 6-18 getting the recommended amount of only 60 mins per day of physical activity. In Canada we are at ONLY 9%.

NINE PERCENT! The culture of activity, exercise, health and fitness must start with the parents. This is an opportunity to recognize something we are failing at as a country and make a change. This is a chance to recognize something we are failing at as families and make a change. This is an opportunity to recognize something we are failing at as individuals and make a change.

Right NOW! As parents we all need to set the example for our kids, for our family and friends and for anyone else who can be inspired along the way. Success breeds success and we all want to do better. For the kids it is as easy as

getting them involved in new activities, new programs, and just getting them outside to play. There are TONS of businesses, programs and options for kids to move more, move better, be more active, and to “get fit, and have fun” (isn’t that right Hal and Joanne?). It is not only the athletes and the rep team kids who deserve to be healthy; in fact many of those kids still do not get enough of the activity and energy expenditure they need to qualify for the 60 mins per day minimum.

What can you do to be a leader of one? How about a little inspiration from some people who have already done it?

I’M A LEADER OF ONE ...

Here are just a couple of quick stories of some special people who are leading the charge and becoming Leader of One in their lives. ___________________________________________ “Leader of One, that’s a phrase that really hits home for me. I am 64 and live with Type 2 diabetes. I have witnessed many friends and colleagues sit at home and remember how they once loved to dance but can’t anymore, loved to golf but can’t walk the course, loved to ski but don’t have the stamina. I decided to take control of my life and be proactive in exercise and making healthy choices to improve my quality of life before my doctor forces me to or worse yet, I have a stroke or heart attack.

Too many of my friends have suffered debilitating illnesses and even death due to not keeping active and watching their health. How can you preach to your children to make healthy choices if you can’t do it for yourself.

Since my girls were just babies I have told them every time I leave the house that mummy is going to train, to play, to run, etc. so that I can feel Healthy, Happy, Beautiful and Strong. One day when my oldest daughter was just one and sitting in her high chair I was getting ready to leave to go train at Twist and I leaned in to give her a kiss goodbye. When I stood up she raised her little arms above her head and cheered, saying in her little voice Healthy, Happy, STRONG! I cried tears of joy in that moment because not only did it reaffirm to me that what I do and say matters, but it filled my heart to know that as a mother I could help my daughter to be excited to feel all those things, to be all those things, and to live her life to the fullest!

Whitby Eagles Softball - Looking Ahead to 2017 Submitted by Whitby Eagles

The Eagles have dominated in the East for the last few seasons and are striving to take over the West in 2017.

The Whitby Eagles Softball teams took some welldeserved time off after a summer full of wins and losses, grass stains and scrapes, sacrifice bunts and homeruns and most importantly friendships and family support. Our teams are back in full force with their indoor winter training in hopes to bite down on some gold in the spring 2017.

The Whitby Eagles will be fielding 10 teams this season including: Mite 10U, Squirt Minor 11U, Squirt Major 12U, Novice 14U, Bantam Minor 15U, Bantam Major 16U, Midget 18U, Intermediate 19U and Senior 21U. Our association provides each team with an indoor gym for the winter to train and prepare their athletes for their upcoming summer season.

Our coaches are dedicated to prepare and train their teams to compete at the highest level and do so by adding additional training in indoor domes, gyms, and batting facilities. Many of our teams partake in winter indoor dome tournaments throughout North America, which helps teams to see the progress they have made in training and also where they need to be. The Eagles have dominated in the East for the last few seasons and are striving to take over the West in 2017.

Wanderers Team Up with Elite Training Systems

By Stew Dobbs - Director of Rugby, Ajax Wanderers Wanderers team up for a partnership with Elite Training Systems (ETS) for a Long Term Athlete

Development program over the winter. Ajax Wanderers are pleased to announce our partnership with ETS to help develop our athletes to reach levels similar to that of Provincial and National standards. Over the winter months Ajax Wanderers members 14yrs old and up have the opportunity to sign up for two 10 week training sessions with ETS based out of the Iroquois Centre in Whitby that focus on off-season strength and conditioning. We are especially grateful to Sean Harrison, an ETS staff member and Ajax Wanderer Sr. Mens player who helped to develop this program and partnership for the Wanderers and ETS. Elite Training Systems offers one on one and team training for individuals looking to reach their true potentials. They work with athletes of all sports backgrounds both locally at Durham College, Provincially with organizations like Rugby Ontario and nationally with Rugby Canada. We are very excited for this partnership for our members. Ajax Santa Claus Parade - Ajax Wanderers once again

participated in the annual Ajax Santa Claus Parade. The parade was held on November 26th and went though main streets of Ajax finishing off at the Town Hall. We had Wanderers members of all ages walk in the parade along side our float. And what a great sight to see the big guy in red, Santa himself, end off the parade! UOIT wins first OUA championship

LONDON, Ont. – For the first time ever – UOIT has won an Ontario University Athletics (OUA) championship.

The women’s soccer program defeated the Queen’s Gaels 1-0 on Sunday, Nov. 6 at Mustangs Field in London to claim both the program and school’s first OUA banner.

“It’s a pretty indescribable feeling to be honest – I’m extremely proud of the girls and the way they played over the weekend and throughout the season,” said UOIT manager of intercollegiate athletics Scott Barker. “The first OUA banner and championship in UOIT history and I can’t think of a more deserving team than the women’s soccer program for what they’ve done over the last five years.”

In the 22nd minute OUA all-star Taijah Henderson (Ajax, Ont.) scored the lone goal of the match, outmuscling the Queen’s defender to earn a breakaway and tuck the ball in the bottom left corner of the net under Madison Tyrell (White Rock, B.C.).

The Ridgeback defence was strong throughout the game, but the defending champion Queen’s Gaels did string together numerous second half opportunities – including a shot off the crossbar late in the match.

Tyrell finished the game with four saves, while UOIT keeper and OUA allstar Helen Frampton (Toronto, Ont.) made two stops in the match.

“I – I was just emotional, obviously some tears and I wanted to go congratulate the other coach for what they’ve done, but I knew I had to come back and celebrate with the girls and enjoy it with the girls,” said UOIT head coach Peyvand Mossavat. “The last five years building the program hasn’t been easy, but you feel like everything you’ve done, it some how summed up to this.”

The Ridgebacks best finish in their program’s five-year history prior to Sunday was a bronze medal at the 2014 championship in Hamilton.

“It’s surreal – I kind of had to pinch myself a couple times, but it’s probably the best feeling I’ve ever had,” said fifth-year defender Jamie Ryan (Ottawa, Ont.).

After the game UOIT captain Kylie Bordeleau (Cambridge, Ont.) was named the Porter Airlines player of the game.

“I can’t (describe it), I don’t think that I’ve taken it in, but I can’t put it into words,” said Bordeleau. “It feels overwhelming and amazing and I’m overwhelmed with pride for my team.”

Both teams advanced to the U Sports (CIS) women’s soccer championship at Acadia University from Nov. 10-13.

overtime in their quarter-final match to advance to the semifinal against Laval.

Facing the Rouge et Or, UOIT lost 2-1 - also in overtime - to send the Ridgebacks to the bronze medal match against the Queen’s Gaels.

Katherine Koehler-Grassau (Greely, Ont.) scored the lone goal of the bronze medal game in the 59th minute.

When the final whistle blew with the Ridgebacks up 1-0 they had secured the school’s first U Sports medal in program history to cap off a record year for the women’s soccer program.

Following the tournament, Bordeleau and Koehler-Grassau were named championship all-stars.

Laval would end up winning the national championship beating the University of British Columbia (UBC) Thunderbirds 2-1 in the gold medal match.

HOW TO SUCCEED At Parent - Teacher Interviews

Parent-teacher interviews. Those three words can raise stress levels among both students and parents. But whether parents love or loathe parent-teacher interviews, the interview is an important part of taking an active role in a child’s school success.

Making the parent-teacher interview an informative, rewarding, and stress-free experience is not as difficult as it may seem, but it does require a little prep work.

Oxford Learning offers these tips on how parents can have successful parent-teacher interviews.

“Parents should go into the interview informed,” says Oxford Learning. “It’s not enough to just show up. Parents need to have read the report card/progress report thoroughly and arrive with questions that will help them gain better insight into how their child is doing in school.”

Oxford Learning recommends that parents review their child’s report cards and recent schoolwork and then compare.

Do the homework grades reflect the grades on the report card?

If there are discrepancies, parents should take note of them, bring examples, and be prepared to discuss their concerns at the interview.

Oxford Learning also suggests talking to your child about his or her classroom experience. “When parents are in doubt, they should go to the source. Who knows better about your child’s classroom behaviour than your child? Ask your child if there is anything that you should know about. This information can keep you from getting blindsided when you meet with the teacher.”

During the meeting Oxford Learning advises parents to remain calm, take notes, and identify goals. Parent-teacher interviews are relatively short as teachers only have a limited

Boyes came home and became a driving force in Ontario and Canadian women’s lacrosse, growing the game to new heights. The Lady Blue Knights lacrosse club was founded by by Boyes in 2000 and has gone on to become Canada’s largest and most successful women’s lacrosse organization with 38 Provincial Championships and 4 Ontario Summer Games gold medals. For Barb, the circle continues.

Lacrosse is also known as the Ancient or Creator’s game. As Canada’s national summer sport, it has been played by First Nations peoples for centuries as both a healing game and to settle conflict. Originally, the game was played only by males who made their own sticks which females were not even allowed to touch. Slowly, the game grew beyond the Native peoples and into the mainstream.

In 1890, lacrosse travelled across the Atlantic to St Leonard’s School in Scotland. Having watched a men’s game in Montreal, headmistress Miss Louisa Lumsden became smitten and brought the game to her female students.

The women’s game was born. It was one of those original students, Rosabelle Sinclair that bought the women’s game back to North America but originally, it was countries in the British Isles that were considered the powerhouses of the international women’s game.

It was an exciting event for all and the culmination of many years of hard work and sacrifice for both players and parents. Starting at an early age, these players had been coached by current and former NCAA women’s lacrosse players and now it is their turn to continue the tradition of Lady Blue Knights success. It was also an example of lacrosse coming full circle.

Event organizer and Lady Blue Knights Executive Director, Barb Boyes is a key part of that success and a key part of that circle. A member of the first Canadian Women’s National team in 1982, Barb was part of something special.

The team was new and young and comprised mainly of box lacrosse players. Ranked sixth out of the six teams competing, the young “plucky Canadians” fought hard and surprised the world by winning a bronze medal over the heavily favoured Scots.

The Canadian game grew and in 2014, Canada won sliver in the World Championships held in Oshawa, Ontario. A number of Lady Blue Knights were on that team.

Olivia Hofmann is part of that circle. Starting as an 8-yearold in the first Junior Blue Knights program, Olivia came to love the game early. It was a natural fit as Olivia’s grandmother is a First Nations Mohawk. Lacrosse was a part of her bloodline. Committing to William Smith was the end of a long journey and the beginning of a new and even more exciting one. “I fell in love with the school. The academic and lacrosse opportunities were so exciting that I knew I ha found my place” said Olivia.

From the Creator’s game to the women’s game, from Barb Boyes to a current generation of Lady Blue Knight players, lacrosse continues to grow and continues to come full circle right here in Oshawa.

PA Day and Holiday Clinics - While others are sleeping in on PA days or holidays you can take your game to the next level at FC Durham Academy. Recreational and elite players have an opportunity to enhance their skills in these full day clinics. The morning are a series of innovative soccer activities designed for technical development, while the afternoon will be packed with fun games and activities that will allow the players to explore and experiment with their soccer skills learned.

Em FC Durham Academy is the first standards based soccer academy in Durham Region and since the academy’s conception in July 2013 has grown to operating 23 academy teams and approximately 300 full-time members.

We are a proud and respected member of both the Soccer Academy Alliance of Canada (SAAC) and the Ontario Recognized Non-Club Academy (ORNCA) membership group. SAAC was the first standard’s based league in Canada and continues to strive forward in player development, coaching development and assisting players to National Programs, Professional Club and College Soccer.

In September 2016, the Academy renovated and moved into our new home, which going forward will be called the Academy Training Centre (ATC). This facility houses a 7v7 indoor turf field, 7v7 outdoor turf field, meeting room and offices.

Over the past three years, FC Durham Academy has graduated 43 males and females to scholarships at postsecondary education in the United States and Canada.

This can only be accomplished due to our extensive college bound program that has been developed for our committed student-athletes, using our leaderships many years of experience in college recruiting.

Prior to reaching the College Bound Program at U15, the players must first develop a foundation of technical, tactical, physical, mental and social skills. We not only offer the Academy Team Program to assist players with the development of this foundation, but also offer many different supplemental programs for our members and non-members alike.

Supplemental and Advanced Training Programs Technical and physical literacy development for recreational and elite players U8-U18 can be found in the Supplemental Training Program (STP) and Advanced Training Program (ATP). Learn in this small group environment, from a coaching staff that specializes in technical skill development.

Groups are created based on the player’s current attributes and abilities.

Goalkeepers - Non-member goalkeepers can find goalkeeper specific training on a weekly basis at the

Position Specific Quad Training - Most team training sessions are structured so that each player receives the same training as his or her teammates, even though they are asked to perform different functions in games.

Development is about making technique into skill and positional development is making that technique a functional skill. This is a program for you. Our educated SuperTots Facilitator has developed exciting activities that both the tots and parent can enjoy together on the field. This program will operate all year long, rain or shine. If scheduled for outdoors and it is raining - we simply move the program to the indoor field!

Whitby Sports Hall of Fame - To Celebrate 20th Anniversary in 2017

The Whitby Sports Hall of Fame was founded in 1997 for the express purpose of recognizing and honouring individuals or groups/teams of individuals who, as a result of their respective efforts, have contributed to the advancement and quality of sport in the Town of Whitby or who have exhibited and achieved athletic prowess in a particular sport of such a standard as to attract acclaim and recognition from the sporting community at large.

From its inception, the Whitby Sports Hall of Fame has been unwavering in its energies to acknowledge and preserve the history of sport in the community. Throughout this period of service to the town, the Hall’s executive has supported the induction of seven teams and 43 individuals, culminating in a current membership of 238 athletes, builders, team executives, and media personalities.

In the spring of 2017, the Whitby Sports Hall of Fame will celebrate its 20-year anniversary, in conjunction with its Induction Gala, to be held at Royal Ashburn Golf Club on Saturday, April 22nd. Planning is currently underway to recognize three additional inductees at this event; release of the names of the 2017 inductees will take place in early February.

As part of these 20th anniversary festivities, the formal program for the evening will include a tribute to the Whitby Dunlops senior men’s team that captured the 1958 World Ice Hockey Championship in Oslo, Norway. All members of this team formed the first class of inductees into the Whitby Sports Hall of Fame, honoured at the Hall’s inaugural gala held in May 1997, and it is highly anticipated that some of the surviving members from the team will be in attendance at the Gala on April 22nd.

Memorabilia from the team’s world championship in 1958, and its Allan Cup national titles in 1957 and 1959, will also be on display at the 2017 Gala. Attendees that night will enjoy the unique opportunity to appreciate the skills and the accomplishments of a team that brought worldwide recognition to the Town of Whitby almost sixty years ago; and since that time, no other club team in Canada has ever duplicated the level of hockey success achieved by the Whitby Dunlops from 1957-1959.

What Exactly is Power Skating???

‘Power skating’ is a term that is widely used and often misused. Power skating is a component of training skating and developing technique, power and speed for hockey and ringette players.

When I watch “power skating” instructors or coaches running power skating, most times what I witness is a conditioning or bag skate. Yes the players do need to be conditioned, but that alone will not make them good skaters. Most times I show up to run a practice or session and hear parents and coaches say “skate them hard” or “bag them”. So if the players come off the ice sweating with their legs burning, they somehow equate that to a great skate.

Problem being they did not work on technique and what did they really learn to improve their skating? Nothing is the answer. I have always stressed that if you can’t skate you can’t play, so power skating has to help you learn how to skate properly not kill you, like in the old days. Players need to slow down to learn how to go fast.

Power skating should be a technical skate focusing on developing power and speed. You need to learn how to skate more efficiently, explosively, powerfully, and be stable on your blades. Educated power skating instructors need to have specifics in order to design a proper power skating program so players get great results.

It takes many years to become a great skater. You cannot expect to take a power skating session that is 8-10 weeks long or some privates and “bam” you’re this great skater.

If you stay the course and work with professional power skating instructors that truly understand how to teach proper technique for game situations skating skills, within 8-10 years you will be a great skater. It takes years to master hockey or ringette skating. Don’t give up and most importantly try to be work outside you comfort zone.

Maggie is a grade 10 student at Brooklin High School and she is the reigning Rookie Athlete of the Year. She also competes in all three high school sports seasons.

In the fall she is a member of the Cross Country team. In the winter Maggie is the captain of the Varsity Girls hockey team she has helped the team to a great start in the 2016-17 season. Maggie is also an important member of the Varsity Girls Lacrosse team at BHS. Last year she helped the team win the LOSSA championship.

Outside of school Maggie plays for the Whitby Junior Wolves hockey team and has already committed to Colgate University when she completes high school..

Tyler is a grade 12 student at Brooklin High School and he has been an integral part of the Bears athletic program over the past two years contributing in all three high school sports seasons. Tyler was a key member of the Senior Boys Rugby 7’s team that won silver at LOSSA. He is also on the Senior Boys Hockey team which is currently first in the LOSSA standings. In the spring Tyler plays on the Senior Boys Rugby 15’s team. Outside of school Tyler plays for the Whitby Wildcats Midget AAA team.

RAISING HULL Do You Know Who I Am? By: Troy Hull - Author of Upcoming Book “Raising Hull” All of us at one time or another have been involved one way or another with the question ‘Do YOU know who I am?’ Here is a true story and one I sure hope you enjoy reading. I recently moved to Apsley with hopes to continue writing about my family while adding some humour to my stories. I have experienced many things growing up as a Hull over the 47 years and now wish to share them with you. I have several stories of life on the farm with the Hull Brothers, time spent in Chicago and time spent with many people who you will all know.

Here is my rendering of DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM ...

My aunt and I were enroute home from a week in Italy, we had a much needed brief stop over in Germany as we both smoke. I quickly grab a glass of vino and meet up with her in 1 of the many smoking booths, ahhhh, you could just walk into one and inhale the smoke of 10 cigarettes at once.

My aunt is a just one of those who doesn’t travel well and when she travels with me she is always expecting the worse. As we are seated waiting to board the plane home we take note that there are several students from a Sudbury grade 12 class on the connecting flight, they’d been on a class trip. When I was in school we never had a trip outside of Ontario and rightfully so!!

As we are seated and waiting for the boarding call we take note that 2 of the male students sitting across from us are staring at my aunt and I, on this occasion neither Dennis nor Bobby are with us and we are not sure what to make of this. When my aunt is nervous she gets out her lipstick and then always whispers to me “Are you up for another smoke?” You don’t have to ask me twice. Up we get and off to the ‘HUT’ we go.

We are in the smoking booth for a few seconds when the door opens up and the 2 young guys come in and approach us, the one guy nervously says to me “Mr Messier, I am so sorry to bother you and your wife but my buddy and I would like your autograph” I have a strong resemblance to Mark but this was a 1st!

I glanced to my aunt and with my smirk said “Well ok, grab a piece of paper and we’ll meet you back at boarding” I quickly scribbled on their note paper and when we got back to boarding handed them their pieces of paper.

My aunt, with her lipstick in hand, asked me “Who just signed that?”

My reply, BEST OF LUCK BOBBY HULL!!

Once we had all boarded the plane the young guys came up to me and as they were about to apologize for the mix up I said to them “Right church just the wrong phew!!”

Whitby Lions Flag Football Returns For Another Great Season!

Submitted by: WLFC The Whitby Lions Football Club is back for another season of fast-paced, non-contact football. Serving youth across Durham Region, WLFC offers recreational and competitive flag football for boys and girls between the ages of 4-17. The club began play in the Spring of 2013 and has continuously grown its player base and the programs it offers. “We are about to kick off our fifth outdoor season, and every year we’ve seen a tremendous increase in the number of participants and the overall quality of the program”, says Rob Randall, director of football operations for WLFC. “We strive to get better every year, from coaching and skill development to officiating and overall experience”, adds Randall.

In 2016, the club hosted three divisions and twenty-two teams. They also ran the ‘Little Lions’ program for young players between the ages of 4 – 6, which focuses on teaching basic football skills in a fun environment.

This past year, the club also formed its first competitive teams. Teams were formed at Atom, Peewee and Bantam age divisions and all three competed against other teams from across the province at the Provincial Championships held in Burlington last July. Each team represented WLFC with pride and class, and all came away with hardware. The Peewee team captured a bronze medal and the Bantam took home a silver. The Atom team defeated all challengers, finishing with a perfect record in round-robin play before defeating Toronto an exciting championship game. Dom Ionadi, president of the club, commented on the success of the program: “We started the competitive program this past season as a key building block for developing the best flag football program in the province. We had some success and learned a lot, and feel strongly that we have the coaches, the athletes and the structure to be even better in the years to come.”

On September 24th, 350 of our players and family members attended a Blue Jays game between Toronto and the New York Yankees. All had a good time, and our attendance was noted on the Jumbotron as we cheered the Jays to victory.

Our Whitby Girls Softball Junior Board organized a very successful inaugural Halloween Night event on the evening of Saturday, October 29th at the Brooklin Library and Community Centre. Attendance by players, siblings and parents was terrific. Costumes were plentiful, and all had a good time. Credit has to go to our Junior Board who planned and organized this event on their own with guidance from our own board member, Paul Tobin. The attempt by the Junior Board to keep our players engaged with the Association during the off-season is very much appreciated!

What’s your game next summer?

On December 3rd, the Whitby Girls Softball Association participated in the Town of Whitby JCI Santa Claus Parade.

This participation has been an annual event for our association for many years, and there is always a good turnout of players and board members as we march to the rollicking Christmas music emanating from our Christmas parade float.

Our annual Free Skate Night is next up, providing another great activity for our players and families between Christmas and New Year’s Day. This is an opportunity to celebrate the holiday season, renew friendships with teammates, and just generally have a great night of skating! It will be held at the McKinney Community Centre arena on Wednesday, December 28th, and will no doubt have many attendees as has happened in past years. We will also be having an early registration night for the 2017 season, and we are asking for donations of food for the local food bank.

Despite winter weather arriving, our thoughts to the 2017 season continue. In January 2017, we will be running our pitching, catching, and general skills clinics for those girls aspiring to improve their skills for the coming year. Players who have registered for the 2017 season are eligible to participate and there are a limited number of players that can be accepted. Registration for the clinic, therefore, is first come, first served.

New players are always welcome in the Whitby Girls Softball Association regardless of skill or athletic ability. We offer both a recreational atmosphere and the opportunity for a more competitive atmosphere through our Select Team tournaments. No matter what the level, the Whitby Girls Softball Association provides an active and fun program for girls in Whitby and the Durham region.

Oshawa’s “Original” House League Hockey Program As a proud member of OMHA, Oshawa Little NHL Division N.A.S.C. Hockey is Oshawa’s first house league established in 1947. The league started with 18 Peewee teams and body contact was only permitted in the defensive end. The inaugural season consisted of a 5 game schedule.

N.A.S.C. Hockey was the first to form the “Little NHL” division. Those teams were at the Peewee level and were more competitive than house league but were less competitive than rep hockey.

Oshawa only had 1 indoor rink (Hambly Arena) that burned down in 1953 and left the city with 1 outdoor ice surface at North Oshawa Park.

Many notable NHL graduates started their careers in this very program.

Game play expanded into newly constructed Children’s Arena and in 1960, N.A.S.C. Hockey introduced two new divisions, Novice and Atom. Teams started playing their games on half ice due to this shortage of arenas. With the introduction of Harman Park Arena, Bantam and Midget divisions were introduced in 1965.

Such notables include: Dale Hawerchuk, Kevin McClelland, Eddy Westfall, Jimmy Jackson, Peter Sidorkiewicz and John MacLean.

In 1970, “Little NHL” left N.A.S.C Hockey and amalgamated with Oshawa Minor Hockey (rep league). The cooperation between the leagues continued after the separation as “Little NHL” would continue to draft players from the N.A.S.C. house league program.

As a sub-committee of the Neighbourhood Association of Sports Committees, N.A.S.C. Hockey was based on “community” and was formed representing the 20 Neighbourhood park associations that even today, geographically cover the entire city of Oshawa.

“I’m proud to say that the effort and support of the community is overwhelming and is a testament to the commitment to both the hockey league and the kids”. Our registration numbers have soared over 20% in the last year alone.

N.A.S.C. Hockey is also an active member in the community. The committee fundraises throughout the season with all proceeds going directly into the "family assistance program". Last season alone, they assisted 38 children who would have not had the opportunity to play hockey.

MEET OUR EARLY SIGNEES By: Jeffrey Iceton NCAA Early Signing period for golf lasts a single week in early November. The Durham Junior Golf Tour is thrilled to have two members signing this year!!

At the DJGT, one of our goals and objectives is to help our tour members achieve their dreams of playing NCAA golf. We are proud of Nick Oosterhof and Ryan Page, for their dedication, hard work and perseverance in accomplishing this goal. Nick and Ryan have worked hard on both their academics and golf training and with the support of, our golf team and their parents, have earned golf scholarships south of the border.

Both student athletes will be attending Lake Superior State University next year where they will be joining tour alumni Zac Carson, Taylor Cosburn and Gavin MacIver playing golf for the Lakers. Nick plans to earn a degree in Environmental Science while Ryan will be pursuing a degree in Accounting and Finance.

Nick Oosterhof has been a tour member since 2012 and has been mainstay atop our leaderboards for much of his playing career. This past season Nick earned victories in 3 tour events including the season’s first major and finished 3rd on our order of merit. Nick posted impressive results at the Ontario Junior Boys’ Championship were he finished in 12th position and qualified for the Canadian Junior Boys Championship finishing T17. For the past three seasons, Nick has been a member of the Team DJGT training program working hard on his game.

Ryan was originally a U15 alternate in 2011 before earning full tour status in 2012. Ryan is an excellent example of what hard work and commitment to game improvement looks like, showing yearly improvement and progression up our leaderboards. In 2016, Ryan finished T1 in our second major of the season and posted six top 10 finishes on route to finishing 5th on our order of merit. This past fall he finished in 5th at the LOSSA Golf Championships helping pace Sinclair Secondary High School to the team title and lead them to the silver medal at the OFSSA Golf Championships.

Blyth Academy A Great Place for Student Athletes By: Adam Hurley, Principal, Blyth Academy Downsview Park

A school day at Blyth Academy Downsview Park looks quite a bit different from a typical school. Students start off the day with sport-specific training before moving onto academics in small sized classes - an average of seven students!

While the rigours of elementary and high-school can be a challenge for many students, elite athletes often face a particularly difficult time finding a healthy balance between sport and academics – especially one that allows for continued skills development while maintaining a highstandard of learning.

Located next to the Scotiabank Pond and adjacent to The Hangar indoor sports facility, Blyth Academy Downsview Park offers a perfect solution for high-performing student athletes facing this dilemma.

“Our campus is a great place for student athletes to come to get individualized education within a small class setting, as well as elite-level training in hockey, soccer, and baseball,” says principal Adam Hurley. “Our mandate is to combine the right level of academic, athletic and nutrition components in order to provide student athletes every opportunity to make it to the next level.”

The Blyth Academy academic model follows a four-term approach where students focus on two courses at a time, compared to a traditional semester approach where they tackle up to four subjects simultaneously.

“This structure allows students to complete courses in ten weeks. Having to balance and focus on only two courses at a time allows students to fully understand the course material, and have the time necessary to digest it,” says Hurley.

This four-term structure gives student athletes the time to develop and hone their skills for future athletic opportunities. Blyth Academy graduates include top-level student athletes in Junior A, the OHL, the NCAA and several notable NHL alumni. Many students in other sports have gone on to play in European leagues, and several have been awarded NCAA division one scholarships to Ivy League schools. The Academy employs a full-time guidance counsellor to assist with program planning and helping students apply to Canadian and American universities, along with SAT preparation.

In the afternoon students take part in a strength and conditioning component in the school’s private gym facility, which gives them the opportunity to work with a professional strength coach.

Throughout the day, staff ensure students maintain the nutritional balance needed to excel both at sports and at academics.

“We offer an optional meal plan which really focuses on providing wholesome, nutritious meals to keep them energized throughout the day. Our students receive a morning snack, a warm lunch, and an afternoon snack to keep the energy going,” says Hurley.

Blyth Academy Downsview Park believes all student athletes need to be given every opportunity to excel in their sport, and offers programming for grades 5-12 as well as an eastend shuttle for students from the Durham Region.
