John Hill remembers standing at the top of a run at Blue Mountain in Collingwood, calling his doctor on his cellphone with glee. He was about to ski down, and that was a pretty good moment for a man who’d been told he’d never walk again. He still chuckles at the memory. And memories, which are still coming back to him, are signposts of healing for the Durham real estate agent, who battled his way back to a full life following a devastating head injury in 2005. He doesn’t recall the morning of Friday, Nov. 25 of that year, when his car spun out of control and collided with another vehicle near Kedron Dells Golf Club in north Oshawa at 6 a.m., while he was on his way to a meeting. But the accident put him into a coma and into Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, and then into rehab for months. He didn’t go home until early 2007, and life was changed. “What you do is you learn to accept life the way it comes at you,” advises Mr. Hill, now 54. “I’m happy to have my two feet on this side of the ground.”

Even a school board in York Region has chosen to purchase the item for the compost bins in its classrooms. “I want to get it into all of the school boards and all of the municipalities,” says Ms. Sirko. Sean Brick, MSB’s production manager, can vouch for the product. “I think it’s great. I have one at home,” he says. Ms. Sirko, a big believer in recycling and composting, hopes her handy product will help improve waste diversion, and that apartment and condo buildings will start composting. DURHAM -- It may look simple enough, but it took a Whitby resident who’d had enough with her messy kitchen compost to invent a contraption that will keep the bag in place. “I was frustrated with compost and the mess falling down,” recalls Janet Sirko, inventor of Ring Around The Bin, a plastic ring that fits on top of the common Orbis kitchen compost bin in order to keep the bag in place and stop it from falling into the bin. She searched through flyers in an attempt to find a ring already on the market, but when she couldn’t, she chose to seek a way to invent it herself. “I never told anyone about it, not even my boyfriend,” she says. She got Canada and U.S. patents and found an illustrator before finding someone to manufacture the product. “Everything had to be made in Canada,” she says. So in late 2013, she found a company in Pickering called MSB Industries Inc., which specializes in plastics injection moulds. The company can take a drawing on a napkin and work with a customer all the way through, from the design to the production phase. “We’re a one-stop shop,” says Brian Valerio, manufacturing manager. “There are very few of us that do what we do.” The company worked with Ms. Sirko to come up with the perfect product, and when the ring helped the lid on the kitchen compost bin snap shut, they knew it was right. “It’s called the audible click,” jokes Mr. Valerio. The product was launched in October and

early in 2015. “It’s a means of a strong community, how everyone helps each other out,” Mr. Trudeau said of the hard work following the devastating event. Earlier in the day, he met with the firefighters who were on the scene Monday, and said he credits the first responders and staff for getting the residents out safely. “Yes, there was a loss of property but no loss of life,” said Mr. Trudeau.

Fairview resident Elmer Stewart was also thankful for the quick response. He said the only thing he lost was the meal he was sitting down to eat when the fire broke out. “They were really efficient about what to do,” he said. “They didn’t overlook anything.” Fellow Fairview resident Viola Thompson was cleaning her glasses when all of a sudden the residents were being taken out of the building.

Energy Mike Schreiner Guest Column

Exploring affordable alternatives to nuclear

durhamregion.com

&

No nuclear project in Ontario’s history has been delivered on time or on budget. We are still paying for the $20 billion of stranded debt dumped on us from past nuclear cost overruns. No private company will insure a nuclear station because the risks are too high. Residents of Durham living within 10 kilometres of Darlington will soon receive potassium iodine pills to protect them from radiation from a disaster. And there is still no solution for dealing with nuclear waste. Is this the legacy we want to leave our children and grandchildren? You don’t need an economics degree to understand that nuclear in Ontario is a bad deal. According to the Ontario Clean Air Alliance, Ontario has the transmission capacity in place with Quebec to replace over 90 per cent of the power produced by Darlington. Quebec can do it at a lower cost: 6 cents/kWh for Quebec hydro versus 8.9 to 16.6 cents/kWh for electricity from the Darlington rebuild. Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard has said, “We have power available, we have surpluses ... we also want to sell it to our neighbours.” Status quo politicians ignore this better deal in the name of protecting jobs. But studies show that investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy create three to seven times more jobs than nuclear projects. By any measure the Darlington rebuild is a bad investment. At $12.9 billion it is the equivalent of 12 cancelled gas plants. Factor in the inevitable cost overruns and the price could balloon to $32 billion. These are expensive subsidies at $5.8 to $14.4 million per job! We can create better jobs for Ontario’s nuclear workers by transitioning their expertise into jobs as the global experts in decommissioning nuclear plants. Decommissioning will only grow with the number of nuclear facilities reaching their end of life. Making smart decisions about our long-term energy systems is critical as Ontario prepares for the new clean economy. The government should stop rebuilding Darlington until they conduct an independent, public review of nuclear costs and alternatives. -- Mike Schreiner is leader of the Green Party of Ontario

Protect yourself: Get a flu shot in Durham Potentially lost in a landscape hyped by frightening headlines about the Ebola virus and the DV-68 enterovirus is the important reminder for Durham Region residents to get their annual flu shot. But the virus that circulates annually is making a return and the best shot at prevention is to get a vaccination. In terms of perspective, the influenza virus infects millions of Canadians every year resulting in thousands of hospitalizations and, on average, 3,500 fatalities. In comparison, only a few deaths this year

have been reported in association with the DV-68 virus, which affects mostly children, and the Ebola virus has killed three North Americans to date. Indeed, some could argue that the only true outbreak related to the Ebola virus in North American is one of mass anxiety. Influenza, however, is easily spread -before symptoms become apparent -- and can have devastating consequences on certain segments of the population in Durham. Those with underlying health conditions, the elderly, pregnant women and children ages six months to five years are especially vulnerable to influenza. In that context, those who are vaccinated are helping to protect not only themselves, but are providing a measure of protection for their neighbours, family members, co-workers and friends by not exposing others to the virus. Durham’s public health department, to its credit, is once again rolling out a series

of free flu-shot clinics in communities across the region in time for the new flu season. Dozens will be accessible to residents from Pickering to Clarington and north to Scugog and Uxbridge in the coming weeks. It’s true that the vaccine doesn’t provide 100-per cent protection against influenza, but it is still the best way to minimize the risk of infection or spreading it to others. Allergic reactions are rare and there are few side effects associated with the vaccine. If nothing else, the rise of Ebola and the return of the DV-68 enterovirus have reminded Canadians that threats to our national health are always present. But we are fortunate to live in a country where health care is state of the art and surveillance protocols are well developed and established. In the interests of health, we encourage every eligible citizen to get their flu shot this season to protect themselves and others.

Substance versus style

To the editor: The next federal election will be substance versus style. The race is between the Prime Minister, should he decide to run, and Liberal leader Justin Trudeau. Neither is perfect, both are vastly different. The Prime Minister has not only managed to remain in office as one of the longest PM’s in history, he’s also gone from a minority to a majority government. Mr. Trudeau has no doubt overcome many obstacles to become the leader of his party. This reminds me of the race between President George Bush and Barack Obama in the 2008 U.S presidential election. The president was older, wasn’t media-savvy and along comes a fresh face with a new slogan, “Yes, we can.” Oh Canada, don’t let history repeat itself on this side of the border! Ask the people who fell in love with the idea of President Obama then what they’d say now that the honeymoon is over. Nobody’s been on a honeymoon with the Prime Minister. He hasn’t swept us off our feet. He’s just kept the nation steady and advancing domestically and internationally. It matters who is at the helm of this ship called Canada because it can easily become the Titanic with the wrong leader. No matter what you believe, we haven’t hit any icebergs on this PM’s watch. Durham man focuses on healing after devastating head injury

DURHAM -- John Hill is a Durham real estate agent who forced himself to learn to walk again following a head injury suffered in a 2005 car accident. Judi Bobbitt / Metroland

‘My conversation skills have improved from a year ago. I’ve been able to talk up a storm in the last six months. Sometimes I get exhausted.’ John Hill

But memories did return to him while he was recovering in a rehabilitation hospital, and after several months he was sent home in a wheelchair. Friends had built ramps for him at the house, but one day, he says, he decided to get rid of the wheelchair and ramps, determined he would walk again. “I fell on my face a lot. “Memories came back. I remembered the birth of my kids. I still remember things. I’ll drive by a place, and memories come back.” By Easter of 2008, his marriage had crumbled. He counts it as another casualty of the accident. “I had a temper problem,” he acknowledges, saying he was charged with assault and

spent a week in jail before getting bail. “I’m not like that now. I was frustrated back then. I couldn’t eat. My whole body didn’t work right.” He lost the “capacity” for dealing with finances, he says. “They took that away from me. I got it back after a year.” While he says he never lost his real estate licence, he did lose his driving privileges and had to get his driver’s licence again. What he calls his “rough period” lasted about four years. In 2009 he sold his business, and now works for a Bowmanville Re/Max office. He says the accident meant a “huge” financial blow for him, taking him from being well-off to writing a bankruptcy proposal. “Things started to turn around in late 2010 due to healing and memories coming back,” he says, noting he kept active through cycling and gym workouts. While he still has rough days, “I have more good days than bad days. Before, it was more bad than good. “There was a time when if I had too much on the go, I got confused. It’s better now. The doctor said, ‘most people don’t have the drive to do what you did’.” He says a lot of his physical recovery came from coaching himself.

“My brain doesn’t talk to the right side of my body properly. I have to constantly talk to myself, ‘move my leg, move my arm, make a fist’.” He believes doctors can’t really take a patient’s own determination into account when giving a prognosis that the patient won’t walk again. “Go with your own intuition. Go with your beliefs.” He also points out he had a little help from his friends: “I’ve got some good ones.” These days, Mr. Hill says his progress in recovery and healing has slowed, but he doesn’t believe the healing has finished. “My conversation skills have improved from a year ago. I’ve been able to talk up a storm in the last six months. Sometimes I get exhausted.” Now living in Courtice, enjoying his real estate career and pastimes that including biking, dancing and canoeing, he looks forward to more healing. “Life is about relationships. I’m feeling positive, I’m feeling pretty pumped. The future holds a lot for me.” Stories of Inspiration will appear monthly in 2014. If you have an inspiring story you’d like us to consider sharing with readers, e-mail Judi Bobbitt at jbobbitt@durhamregion.com.

ohn Hill remembers standing at the top of a run at Blue Mountain in Collingwood, calling his doctor on his cellphone with glee. “I’m happy to have my two feet on this side of the ground.” Life is a before-and-after story for him: before the crash, and the journey afterward to pick up the pieces and carry on. And life was flowing well for him before that dark morning. In November 2005, Mr. Hill owned Re/Max Spirit, with 165 realtors working in offices in Oshawa, Bowmanville and Brooklin. He was building a plaza in Brooklin to be tenanted, with his real estate office going on the second floor. He and his wife were building a new house in Enniskillen. But the car crash changed everything. “The only reason I lived was because I was in the best shape of my life,” says Mr. Hill, recalling he had done Ironman competitions and had a resting heart rate of 50. While he lay in a coma for more than four months, friends and colleagues pitched in to run the business, get the plaza finished and complete the house to the point his wife could live there, he says. He has no memory of waking up from the coma, and no memory of his time at Sunnybrook. “I had to learn to walk and talk,” he says. “I had no memory of my marriage, no memory of my kids. When I woke up I asked for my first wife.”

Durham officials stress local schools safe following Hamilton abduction Jillian Follert jfollert@durhamregion.com

DURHAM -- School board officials in Durham are offering reassurance in the wake of a recent schoolyard abduction in Hamilton. On Oct. 23, a man took a four-year-old boy from a playground at Earl Kitchener Elementary School in Hamilton during lunch-hour playtime. The abduction was foiled by a woman who saw the crying boy flung over the man’s shoulder. The incident has some local parents on edge. “It’s terrifying, you immediately think, could this happen here?” says Whitby mother Courtney Vincent, who has two daughters, ages five and eight. She is one of many Durham parents who have taken to social media and online comment sections to express their fears. “Kindergarten students are the most vulnerable,” says local parent Andrea Howie in a recent letter to Metroland Durham Region Media Group. “Some aren’t even four yet. They wouldn’t know what to do if someone tried to grab them ... we need to make sure there is no chance of someone getting through those gates.” Ken McNaughton, administrative officer for the Durham District School Board’s Safe Schools program, stressed there are policies and procedures in place to ensure student safety. For example, he pointed to the Ministry of Education’s “Safe Welcome” program, which

Janine Bowyer, superintendent of education for the Durham Catholic District School Board, said officials are “constantly” reviewing safety policies, noting this year’s Safe Schools audit focused on the board’s access to premises policy, to ensure it is being consistently applied. “We are confident that the processes we have in place in our elementary schools will keep our students safe,” she said. “All of our teachers, support staff and lunchtime supervisors across the system wear safety vests on the yard, so the students are clearly aware of who is on duty and staff can identify strangers.” The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board recently introduced new safety measures in response to the Oct. 23 incident. They include requiring all supervising outdoor staff to wear safety vests and use two-way radios, and working with police to do personal safety

has been in place at all DDSB schools since February 2014. It includes locking all school doors 10 minutes after the entry bell and unlocking them only during lunch period and at dismissal time. Schools are equipped with security cameras and a buzzer system, to allow the school office to screen visitors. Mr. McNaughton also noted all kindergarten yards have a pen and a gate and are supervised by teachers and early childhood educators, as well as senior students when possible. “We encourage them to wear safety vests so they are easily visible .. and the teachers always have a two-way radio so they can communicate with the office,” he notes. While the incident in Hamilton has raised anxieties, Mr. McNaughton said feedback from local parents and students indicates they feel Durham schools are safe.

DURHAM -- Flu season is now upon us and public health officials say it’s important to get the flu shot. Here are five reasons to get vaccinated: 1. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent influenza Flu shots are about 60 per cent effective in preventing influenza illness and every year, a new vaccine is developed to protect against the influenza virus strains that are expected in the coming season. Even if the strains have not changed, getting the flu shot every year is necessary to maximize protection.

5. Flu clinics are easy to access With dozens of clinics set up over the next month alone, getting the flu shot is not difficult. The following clinics are organized by Durham Region health department in Durham Region: Ajax Sat., Nov. 8, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ajax Community Centre 75 Centennial Rd., Ajax Location HMS Room (access through south entrance parking lot)

9 Pickering C Sat., Nov. 29, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pickering Recreation Complex 1867 Valley Farm Rd., Pickering Location: O’Brien Rooms A and B (access through back entrance doors) Whitby Sat., Nov. 15 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Regional Headquarters Building 605 Rossland Rd., E., Whitby Location: LLC Room (lower level, access through south entrance doors)

Appointment only clinics Regional Headquarters Building 605 Rossland Rd., E., Whitby (access from Rossland Road) Location: Room 1B (west doors entrance) Monday, Dec. 8, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Call 1-800-841-2729 to make an appointment For more information on the flu and the influenza vaccine, call Durham Health Connection Line at 905-666-6241 or 1-800841-2729, or visit http://bit.ly/1E5vh7J . 3. The flu is easily spread The influenza virus spreads from person to person by cough or sneeze droplets. You can spread the flu to your family and friends even before you show any symptoms, so it is often difficult to avoid. Those people at high risk of influenzarelated complications -- including people with underlying health conditions, residents of nursing homes and other chronic care facilities, people 65 years of age and older, children aged six months to five years of age, pregnant women and Aboriginal peoples -- are especially urged to get the flu shot, as are those capable of spreading the flu to those high-risk people, such as health-care providers, household members and those providing care to young children.

associated with the flu shot Flu shots are safe and well-tolerated for everyone six months of age or older (unless there are medical reasons that prevent them from getting it). While soreness at the injection site may occur and children can develop a fever after vaccination, you cannot get influenza from the influenza vaccine (which contains only killed or weakened virus pieces). Severe side effects and allergic reactions from the vaccine are also rare. Anyone concerned about getting the flu shot is advised to consult their healthcare provider.

2. The flu can develop into more serious health problems Influenza, also known as the flu, is not the same as a cold. Unlike the common cold, the flu can develop into more serious health problems, such as pneumonia or worsening of pre-existing medical conditions (asthma, heart disease or uncontrolled diabetes).

Generals grab big lead in conference

Whitby Junior Wolves sweep western Ontario road swing Katelyn Rae hat trick, Emma Schram shutout lead blowout win over Bluewater

Mitchell Vande Sompel shootout goal completes weekend sweep of Belleville Bulls Brian McNair bmcnair@durhamregion.com

OSHAWA -- One game shy of the quarter-mark this Ontario Hockey League season, there’s not much to fret about for those involved with the Oshawa Generals. After surprising many a year ago and finishing atop the Eastern Conference standings, a feat not seen in these parts since Eric Lindros was leading the way in 1991, the Generals appear bent on a repeat performance, now six points clear of the next closest team in the conference. The Generals built that lead by sweeping the Belleville Bulls in a home-and-home this weekend, winning 5-2 at Yardmen Arena Saturday and 4-3 after a dramatic shootout Sunday before a crowd of 5,232 at the General Motors Centre. Generals coach D.J. Smith isn’t a big fan of the shootout, but he admitted it was plenty exciting enough and said it’s a lot easier to swallow when the coin ends up on the right side. Defenceman Mitchell Vande Sompel ensured that with some nifty moves and a high backhand that beat Bulls goalie Charlie Graham in the eighth round, after Cole Cassels and Josh Sterk had kept the team alive earlier. “It’s great when you win and sucks when you lose,” Smith said afterward. “When you lose, you wish you’d just have the tie and go home, but it is really exciting for the fans, obviously, and everyone involved. That’s good entertainment.” It was an out-of-the-ordinary kind of night for Smith, who was happy with the shootout and not so much with the Generals’ special teams play, which has been dominant to date. Hunter Smith did open the scoring on a power play, tipping home a Michael Dal Colle point shot for his team-leading 12th goal of the season early in the second period, but the Bulls built a 3-1 lead by scoring the next three, two on a power play and one short-handed.

OSHAWA -- Oshawa Generals forward Bradley Latour shielded the puck from Belleville Bulls defenceman Jordan Subban during Sunday’s OHL game at the GM Centre. Oshawa won 4-3 in a shootout. Sabrina Byrnes / Metroland

“It was a little bit ugly with the discipline, and taking a two-minute, five-on-three certainly hurt,” said Smith, referring to Remi Elie’s game-tying goal. “We took some bad penalties, we’ve got to get better at that. Usually our power play saves us and they were very average, or their penalty killing was really good, one of the two. But five on five I thought we carried the play for most of the game.” The Generals did indeed carry a better part of the play, out-shooting the Bulls 38-24 overall, and 14-5 in the third period when goals 15 seconds apart by Dal Colle and Cole Cassels tied the game and forced overtime. “We’ve got a lot of guys who have a lot of pride and guys who have a lot of skill and like scoring,” Smith pointed out. “To think you’re going to keep a guy like Michael Dal Colle off the board when he’s on his game is tough. He had seven or eight chances and just found a way to put one in.” The game was intense and exciting throughout and, despite what the shot totals might suggest, featured solid goaltending at both ends. Graham was particularly sharp, as he has been all season, while Ken Appleby had little chance on any of the Belleville goals, including a nice tip-in by Whitby’s Adam Laishram. Appleby’s remarkable stats this season now see him atop the league in wins with a 12-1-0-0 record, goals-against average at 1.91 and save percentage at .926. The Generals improved to 13-2-1-0 and moved six points ahead of the Bulls (10-40-1) in the East Division and seven up on

the North Bay Battalion (8-2-3-1) in the conference.”

Generally Speaking The Generals were to play Friday in Ottawa, but the game has been postponed due to an ice malfunction at TD Place, giving the team a week off before Sunday’s 6:05 p.m. home game against the Peterborough Petes (4-61-2) ... Michael Dal Colle, Hunter Smith, Josh Sterk, Tobias Lindberg and Bradley Latour scored in Saturday’s road win, Latour into an empty net ... Oshawa’s Ken Appleby and Belleville’s Charlie Graham started both ends of the home-and-home in net ... Cole Cassels had only two points on the weekend, but remains fourth in league scoring with 28 points ... With 19 points, the Generals’ Mitchell Vande Sompel leads the Bulls’ Jordan Subban by one at the top of the defencemen scoring list, although Subban has scored eight goals to Vande Sompel’s two ... Latour’s +14 is the best on the Generals and sixth best in the OHL behind five Erie Otters ... The Generals are second to Erie in power-play efficiency at 30.4 per cent and tops in the league on the penalty kill at 87.2 ... Connor McDavid and the Otters are off to a tremendous start, with McDavid leading the league in points (42) and plus-minus (+30) while the Otters (13-0-0-1) have yet to lose in regulation ... Among those in attendance at Sunday’s game were former New Jersey Devils goalie Martin Brodeur, whose son Jeremy is backup to Appleby, and former Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke, now with the Calgary Flames.

WHITBY -- A perfect road trip to southwestern Ontario last weekend has skyrocketed the Whitby Jr. Wolves up near the top of the Provincial Women’s Hockey League standings. The Wolves came home with six points in three games, defeating London 5-3 Friday, Southwest 4-1 Saturday and Bluewater 9-0 Sunday. The standings at the top of the 20-team league remain very tight, however, with all of the teams chasing the Wolves holding games in hand. Oakville sits at the top with 25 points in 13 games, followed by Whitby with 21 in points in 14 games, Toronto with 18 in 10, and three teams, Stoney Creek, Durham West and Mississauga, all tied with 18 points in 12 games. In Sunday’s blowout over Bluewater, Emma Schram needed to make only seven saves for the shutout, as the Wolves outshot the Hawks 27-2 through two periods and 49-7 all told. Katelyn Rae led the offence with a hat trick and four points, while Hailey Wilson and Emily Volpe each scored twice, and Maya Patel and captain Rhyen McGill added singles. The shot clock was unbalanced Saturday as well, with the Wolves owning a 34-9 advantage, but this time Whitby needed a Cassidy Vinkle goal midway through the game to snap a 1-1 tie. Rae, Briana Colangelo and Kirsten Welsh also scored. Friday’s game in London was the tightest, with the scored tied 1-1 heading into the third and the shots only slightly favouring the Wolves, 26-23. Wilson scored twice for the winners, with singles from Caitlyn Quartarone, Rae and McGill. The Wolves don’t have to travel far for their next road game, a big one, in Ajax Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against the Durham West Lightning. Whitby hosts the next four games, including 11:30 a.m. Sunday against Ottawa at the Iroquois Park Sports Centre.

LOSSA football playoffs start this week Dwyer, Wilson among those in contention for senior AAAA tier 1 title DURHAM -- The LOSSA football playoffs begin in earnest Wednesday, with two senior games in Clarington. In the senior AAAA tier 1 division, Pickering’s St. Mary Monarchs will visit Courtice’s Holy Trinity Titans, and Whitby’s Donald A. Wilson Gators will be at St. Stephen in Bowmanville to face the Royals, both beginning at 1 p.m. The winners of those two games will advance to the Nov. 11 semifinals, where Oshawa’s Paul Dwyer Saints and Ajax’s Pickering Trojans await thanks to firstround byes. The standings suggest the playoffs should be interesting, as Dwyer and Pickering finished tied for first at 5-1, and St. Stephen was also 5-1, albeit with an easier sched-

ule. Holy Trinity and Wilson were both 4-2 and St. Mary 2-4. In senior AAA tier 2, Pickering’s Pine Ridge Pumas will travel to face the Ajax Rams at 2 p.m. Thursday, with the winner advancing to the final against J. Clarke Richardson. In senior AA/AAA, the Bowmanville Talons will be in Oshawa to play the O’Neill Red Hawks Friday at 1 p.m. looking for a berth in the championship game against Oshawa’s Eastdale Eagles. Pickering appears to be the team to beat in junior, going undefeated and earning a bye to the tier 1 semifinals on Nov. 11 along with Holy Trinity. Notre Dame will face Wilson noon Thursday at Oshawa’s Civic Stadium in one quarter-final, while St. Stephen will be at Dwyer for the other at 1 p.m. that day. Quarter-finals in tier 2 junior will also go Thursday, with O’Neill at Ajax (noon), J. Clarke Richardson at Port Perry (1 p.m.), Pereyma at Eastdale (1 p.m.) and Bowmanville at Pine Ridge (1 p.m.). Semifinals are Nov. 12. The championship game for all five divisions will be held on Saturday, Nov. 15 at Oshawa’s Civic Stadium, beginning at 9:30 a.m. and culminating in the senior AAAA tier 1 final at 7:30 p.m. This year’s Football for the Cure event, which featured Wilson facing Dwyer in a junior game and Wilson against Holy Trinity in senior, raised about $4,600 for the Canadian Cancer Society, bringing the four-year total to well over $16,000.

Our lives go on without you And nothing is the same We feel the heartache When someone speaks your name. There is a gift one cannot buy that's very rare and true It's a gift of a son Like the one we had in you. It isn't what we write It isn't what we say It's what we feel within our hearts As we think of you each day. The say time heals everything But we know that isn't so Because it hurts as much today As it did four years ago. Son we hold you close within our hearts And there you shall remain To walk with us throughout our life Until we meet again. It is comforting knowing that Kitty and Honey are with you now.

Love you always and forever Mom, Dad & brother Tom

Corey William Pepper

Missing both of you & think of you every day In all that life has given us And all that's left to do We never had a greater gift Than the years we spent with you The moment that you went to God Our hearts were torn in two One side filled with memories The other side died with you We often lay awake at night When the world is fast asleep And take a walk down memory lane With tears on our cheeks. Remembering you is easy We do it every day Missing you is heartache That will never go away We hold you tight within our heart And there you will remain Life has gone on without you But it will never be the same If we could have one lifetime wish One dream that could come true We' pray to God with all our hearts For yesterday and you. Love you forever Ken, Denise, Garry Derek, Brian, Ana, Kenny, Krystina Zelda and family

SCHNEIDER, Joyce Anne (nee Ulrick) Embraced home into the love of her Creator on Friday, October 31st 2014 at the Oshawa Lakeridge Health Hospital in her 55th year. Joyce was the most beloved wife of 31 years to her husband Michael, a devoted mother to her daughter Mary and her son David, who passed in 1998 but remained constant in her heart, and beloved and admired mother-inlaw to Johnny Soln. Raised within a loving and devoted family, Joyce is predeceased by her father Frank, and survived by her mother Carmel Ulrick, her sisters Ruth (Walter) Holtz, Margaret (Fred) Barrett, Nancy (Bill) Jamieson and brother Dan Ulrick. Nephews and nieces from both sides of her family will remember and cherish the memory of Aunt Joyce. As a teacher at Msgr. Paul Dwyer C.H.S. for 28 years, her students, both past and current, will carry with them the memory of her kindness, infinite patience, and ability to inspire. Throughout her 15 years of living with malignant melanoma, Joyce remained positive and determined. She embraced life from all sides, whether it was performing on stage in community theatre, singing, hiking, canoeing, talking with friends or working in her cherished garden. She was a woman of great spiritual depth who believed deeply in living a life of gratitude. She belonged to many organizations over the years, including the Durham chapter Bereaved Families of Ontario, the Durham Writer's Circle, various theatre groups including O.L.T. and W.C.T. and perhaps most importantly to her, "The Well" her "sisters" in a women's spirituality group. The family wishes to thank the N.T.I.C.U. and M.S.I.C.U. at St. Michael's Hospital, and the Critical Care and Palliative care units of Lakeridge Oshawa. It is impossible to express adequately the gratitude we have for the loving and compassionate care we received from the nursing staff in every walk of her final journey these past 2 weeks. We also want to thank her specialists: Dr. Jose Chang, Dr. Jandranka Jambrosic, Dr.Carmen Simone and Dr. Sunit Das who all cared for Joyce with such devotion. Finally, we wish to thank Fr. Kevin Belgrave, Fr. Yaw, Sue Valentine, Tomy Valookaran, Denise Fox and Joyce's WELL sisters. Visitation will be held at OSHAWA FUNERAL HOME, 847 King Street West (905-721-1234) on Wednesday, November 5th from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. GREGORY THE GREAT CATHOLIC CHURCH (194 Simcoe St. N., Oshawa) on Thursday, November 6th at 10:30 a.m. Interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery. Donations may be made in Joyce's memory to Bereaved Families of Ontario or Hearth Place or the St. Gregory the Great St. Vincent de Paul Society. We request that those wishing to donate flowers refrain from including lilies due to a severe scent allergy in her family. Online condolences may be made at www.oshawafuneralhome.com
