SCUGOG -- Chris Cook just can’t seem to stretch a dollar as far as she used to when picking up groceries. Whether shopping for her family or the dozens of people who receive help from the Operation Scugog food bank, Ms. Cook says the increasing cost of putting food on the table is starting to impact the

SCUGOG -- Scugog has finally hit the million-dollar milestone. Twenty-one years after the Terry Fox Run was introduced to the community, Scugog has officially surpassed the $1-million mark when it comes to donations. “We did it, we did it,” said organizer Elizabeth McArthur. “It’s old news now, but we did it.” Prior to this year’s community fundraising run, held on Sept. 14, the Scugog effort was about $41,200 short of the milestone. That day, the community contributed $25,750 -- leaving the balance of the difference to be made up by Scugog’s schools, which held their runs throughout September and finally submitted their results.

bottom line. “A dollar certainly isn’t going as far as it used to. Everything is going up,” said Ms. Cook, chairwoman of the food bank’s board of trustees. “Folks are having trouble meeting their rent in Scugog because of the high cost of food.” According to the Durham Region health department’s 2014 Nutritious Food Basket report, the cost of a basic healthy diet in Durham has increased by 11 per cent from 2011. Last May, the health department implemented the provinciallymandated NFB protocol by surveying the cost of 67 food items in nine grocery stores throughout Durham. See Increased, page 11

PORT PERRY -- Brooklyn Jacobs, a Grade 5 student at S.A. Cawker Public School in Port Perry, was all smiles after learning that a letter she wrote to Canadian National Railway was selected for CN’s Christmas wish program. Joining her for a ride around the school property was friend Anthony Galligan and CN mascot Max.

Chris Hall chall@durhamregion.com

SCUGOG -- A Canadian National Railway convoy made a surprise stop in Port Perry on Nov. 7 to bring some early Christmas cheer to some Scugog students. Each year the national railway service holds a Holiday Surprise contest, giving the children and grandchildren of CN employees a chance to jot down their wishlist and the transportation agency an opportunity to make those dreams come true. Brooklyn Jacobs, however, put her own spin on the program by thinking of others instead of herself. “Her letter moved everyone in our offices,” said Lindsay Fedchyshyn, regional manager of public affairs for CN. In her correspondence, Brooklyn, a Grade 5 student at S.A. Cawker Public

School, told CN that she had more than enough stuff at home. Instead, she wished the railway service could make a donation to the Little Britain Food Bank and give her classmates -- in particular her pal, Anthony Galligan -- a train ride. After sifting through hundreds of letters, CN officials chose Brooklyn’s letter and made her wishes come true when they donated $5,000 to the food bank and brought along Obie, a miniature train that gave students a quick ride around the S.A. Cawker neighbourhood. “It was just great that CN could do that and help Brooklyn,” said Rob Jacobs, Brooklyn’s father, who has worked as a locomotive mechanic with CN for five years. “She loves to write and when I read that letter, I knew it was very good. This is going to be something she doesn’t forget for a long time.” Also overwhelmed by the surprise was Lori Galligan, Anthony’s mother. “This is just so incredible. It’s such a selfless act for her to think of the food bank and Anthony and put the donation to the food bank ahead of herself,” said Ms. Galligan. “It was a shock when the school called and told us what they were going to do.”

NORTH DURHAM -- Community Living Durham North and its unionized employees have agreed on a new labour contract, averting a possible service disruption. The two sides reached a tentative agreement around 3:15 a.m. on Nov. 6 and the union ratified the deal a day later. The two-year contract is retroactive to April 1, 2014. “It’s a good deal, it’s a fair deal,” said Glenn Taylor, the executive director at CLDN. “It will help us maintain our quality services and improve them.” If no deal was reached, CLDN would have been in a legal position to lock out works and its employees would have been in a legal position to strike at midnight on Nov. 6.

Scugog food bank feeling pinch of grocery, utility costs Just as residents across Scugog feel the pinch every time they go to stock their pantry, so too does the local food bank. It’s a struggle that most everyone feels every week or so when they visit the grocery store and that’s no different for the caring organization that does its best to put food on the table for those in our community who need a helping hand. Chris Cook, who tries to stretch her dol-

lars as far as she can each week when she shops for Operation Scugog, agrees that it seems both her shopping bags and wallet get lighter each time she goes out to stock the food bank’s shelves. But instead of cutting back, the local food bank does its best to keep the status quo by digging deeper and absorbing the increased costs instead of handing out less. In fact, because the non-profit knows how expensive weekly rations can be, the food bank is adding a 20-per cent increase to the monthly helping it hands out to those in need. With the high cost of rent in Scugog, plus skyrocketing utility costs, Ms. Cook says it’s usually the food cupboard where

families make cuts if they want to keep a roof over their head and the lights on. While the reasons for increased food costs might be up for debate, there’s simply no arguing that it costs more to fill a stomach. According to the Durham Region health department’s 2014 Nutritious Food Basket report, the cost of a basic healthy diet in Durham has increased by 11 per cent from 2011. In fact, the report -- which surveyed the cost of 67 food items in nine grocery stores throughout Durham -- found it costs $182 per week or $789 per month to feed a family of four a basic healthy diet, based on recommendations in Canada’s

Geese ‘massacre’ anything but

To the editor: Re: ‘Massacre of Canada geese flock in Scugog field appalling’, letter to the editor, Port Perry Star, Oct. 30, 2014. The letter writer refers to a “massacre,” and an “act of violence” on her neighbour’s farm property. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, one couldn’t paint a more ignorant picture of the legal hunt that took place that morning. I have spoken to the neighbour in question. He invited the group of hunters onto his rural property to partake in the legal harvest of geese. Given there are seven million Canada geese in North America this year, the Canadian Wildlife Service says there is “no conservation risk to providing permits to eligible people who need to reduce damage caused by Canada geese on their property.” Geese represent one of this province’s most popular game birds. Hunters generate millions of dollars to help conserve migratory game bird populations through the purchase of federally regulated hunting permits and the required Canadian Wildlife Habitat Conservation Stamp. Hunters see geese as excellent table fare, representing a bounty of locally harvested lean protein that fits into a 100-mile diet, reduces their carbon footprint and feeds their families for weeks. The federal government sets limits to

Food Guide. Those are figures that Operation Scugog officials are keenly aware of. And, stresses Ms. Cook, it’s why the food bank depends so much on the community to help it feed those in need. “We only exist because of the donations from the community,” said Ms. Cook. With winter weather quickly approaching, the food bank is already seeing its numbers swell as seasonal jobs disappear and heat and hydro costs start to rise. It’s a cycle that happens every year, but one that seemingly is coming with more costs this year. For those who can, please give what you can, whenever you can. restrict the number of geese that may be harvested daily and places season restrictions on the hunt. These regulations are based on science and information from population surveys and harvest reports. Large numbers of geese feeding on crops can result in damage and economic loss to farmers. That, among other reasons, is why landowners permit access to responsible hunters during the fall season to help reduce future crop losses. Hunters make an easy target for some. But through membership in organizations such as the OFAH, hunters are among Ontario’s biggest contributors to wildlife conservation. As a result, hunters tend to develop a much stronger connection to the natural world and the food they put on the table. Galen Eagle Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters

No right to complain To the editor: More than 70 per cent of Durham residents have no right to say a single word about how their local municipality is functioning, why certain businesses can or cannot exist in their area, why policing should be increased or decreased and why their taxes should not be increased. By not voting they have stated clearly that they do not care and will have to accept everything, because they have denied themselves any voice by their absence. Next time, vote. Use our Canadian freedom. Robert Elias Newcastle

SCUGOG -- Ron McIntyre placed a wreath in honour of his son, Captain Steven McIntyre, at the Township of Scugog cenotaph during the Scugog Remembrance Day ceremony.

Scugog remembers its war heroes SCUGOG -- Above, Sarah Cormier, left, a teacher at Port Perry High School, inspired students to create a giant poppy in honour of this year’s Remembrance Day ceremony. Students Sam Green, back left, Tyler Jobe, front left, Merrin Vickers, front right, Sam Jacobs, back right, and Kaitlyn Braun, right, helped to construct the poppy. Each student was given a red circle on which they wrote their name, and the circles were arranged into the shape of the poppy. Right, Taylor Munro, a Grade 1 student at Good Shepherd Catholic School, worked on an art project during her lunch hour. Students created a painting based upon the geometric camouflage used on First World War ships in England.

Enter Laughing Neil Crone Actor, comic, writer

Gratitude for the blessings of life reflected in the poppy I was running the dogs in a field a few days ago, the morning after our little dalliance with an early winter snowfall or, as it’s known in medical parlance, ‘premature precipitation’. The day was cold and damp; grey and melancholic with that depressingly low cloud cover so typical of November. The ground was wet and muddy and although

it didn’t slow the dogs down a whit, I found the going slow and treacherous. I didn’t like being out in this stuff. I was chilled and wet and my boots were dirty. I just wanted to get back home to my warm fireplace and perhaps an espresso and a cookie or two. And then, right in the middle of that smug little notion, I thought about Remembrance Day. And hard on the heels of my petulant little inner dialogue of how cold I was and how dirty I was, came a whole whack of thoughts about things that I wasn’t. I wasn’t under shell fire. I wasn’t dressed in soaking wet wool or hopelessly thin cotton fatigues; my feet alternately rotting from trench-foot or freezing from exposure. I wasn’t desperately clinging to a mud-clogged rifle with fingers so frigidly useless I couldn’t pull the trigger if I had to. I wasn’t waist deep in snow or malarial ooze or shell-crater scum. I wasn’t surrounded by the dead and dying. I didn’t have to kill another person and no other person was trying to kill me. I wasn’t

bleeding out. I wasn’t gasping for air inside the oven of my tank turret. I wasn’t terrified into incontinence. I wasn’t praying to God to put me anywhere but here. I wasn’t parachuting into a night sky teeming with white-hot flak and phosphorous. I wasn’t a thousand miles from the people I love. I wasn’t so parched with terror and exhaustion that I couldn’t spit. I wasn’t witnessing things I could never forget. I wasn’t a prisoner. I wasn’t tortured. I wasn’t enslaved. I was alive and free and whole with the very real and wonderful expectation of someday dying, not on a bloodied beach, or in some faraway jungle or strange, hostile land, but peacefully, in my own bed, surrounded by friends and family. I remember as a kid, for a long time, experiencing the very real fear that someday I would have to go to war. My grandfather had gone to war and many people of my parents’ generation too had gone to war. It seemed reasonable to assume then, that I too, would have some cataclysm visited on me. Some inescapable, black horror that would suck my young life into it

and grind me down or destroy me entirely. At 54, I realize how incredibly lucky I have been. I have lived a life of safety, happiness, health and abundance. What is more, my own children have every reasonable expectation of finishing their days in peace as well. Given our species’ history, this is an amazing thought. But this remarkable good fortune is not the result of happenstance or good luck. It has been bought and paid for. The generations of men and women who have sacrificed their own safety, happiness, health and abundance in the global blast furnaces of two world wars and numerous other conflicts, were and are the currency exchanged for the blessed peace most of us now enjoy. Please think about that in the days ahead. Wear your poppy not because you think you have to, but because you are conscious and aware of the road others have traveled to get ourselves and our children to this beautiful, golden place. -- Port Perry resident Neil Crone, actor, comic, writer, saves some of his best lines for this column.

Swearing felt great -until I realized Dad overheard me On Halloween, my four-yearold daughter delighted in helping me hand out the treats. As is her nature, she generously gifted each trick-or-treater with handfuls of candies. By 8:30 p.m. we ran out. We turned out the lights, locked the door and watched Pinocchio in the dark until one diligent youngster knocked repeatedly, rattled the door knob then scolded us with a nicely enunciated F-bomb. His tantrum took me back to a time in my life when swearing was taboo. As a child of the ’60s, I was raised in a home where swearing was unheard of. My siblings and I respected our elders. We did not talk back, we did not argue and we most certainly did not swear. Until the day I did swear. My first time was 38 years ago. I came home from school to an empty house and decided to make a sandwich. A quick search of the kitchen turned up no bread so I headed down to the freezer in the basement, where Mom stockpiled extra loaves she’d bought on sale. I shoved frozen hamburger and frosted cans of orange juice aside but quickly realized there was no bread left. And I really wanted a sandwich. So I did the unthinkable; I dropped an F-bomb.

Until that moment, I had never uttered a swear word. Hollering that banned word in the muted still of my cinderblock basement felt pretty good -- pretty liberating. Then, I noticed the fluorescent light above my head, blinking and twitching -- dark, light, dark, light -- and I knew I hadn’t turned that light on. Heat crawled up my back. Very slowly, I turned and peered over my shoulder. “Yes, I’m here,” Dad said, from the comfort of his Lazy Boy chair, where he had been reading a book. In the silence of the basement, his voice sounded distorted to my guilty ears, the words exiting his mouth in macabre, slow motion, “Yessss, I’m heeeeere.” My face burned. “Oh. Sorry, Dad ... I’m sorry,” I muttered, before scrambling and tripping back up the stairs. I was 10 years old and in that instant, the bottom fell out of my world. To his credit, Dad never mentioned it. He never gave me trouble. He didn’t need to and he knew it. I’m not 10 anymore but I still feel a remnant of the horror and mortification I felt that day because I respected my dad a lot and I respected the rules. Perhaps a few more rules for today’s kids wouldn’t hurt. To all of the children who thanked my daughter for the candy on Halloween, good for you. To the disappointed lad who didn’t get a few more chocolate bars, maybe try a little respect. It goes a long way.

Education savings deliver unexpected benefits

(NC) Be sure to save for your child’s post-secondary education, no matter whether university is in the picture or not. A Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) for example, will give you valuable government grant money and tax-free savings. Not every dream career requires a degree, but most require some form of certification or training. Electricians, police officers, plumbers, they all require different types of formal training. And RESP money can be put towards most of them. The reality is that an RESP has very few limitations and can be used for most post-secondary education that results in a degree, diploma or occupational skill, be it a college, trade school, arts school or other approved institution of higher learning. “It is a very common misconception that an RESP can only be applied to a traditional university education,” says Andrew Haid, the president and CEO of the innovative RESP provider, giraffe & friends. “Educational savings plans such as our no-fee, worry-free RESP can be applied to a wide variety of educational opportunities. If a child’s chosen career has formal training at an approved institution, an RESP can be used to pursue it.” Parents and students will welcome this flexibility. Canada is increasingly in need of skilled tradespeople, from iron workers and machinists to plumbers and hair stylists. Students who choose careers such as these will have many opportunities for rewarding employment upon graduation. More information is available online at giraffeandfriends.com.

DURHAM TRANSPORTATION MASTER PLAN UPDATE Notice of Commencement and Public Information Centre #1 WORKS DEPARTMENT

PUBLIC NOTICE

The Regional Municipality of Durham is preparing an update to its Transportation Master Plan (TMP) to address long-term transportation needs through 2031. The TMP update will focus on all modes of transportation, including walking, cycling, public transit, auto travel and goods movement, and will build on the achievements of the current Durham TMP that was approved by Regional Council in 2003. The study will be conducted in accordance with the requirements of Phases 1 and 2 of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment which is an approved process under the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act.

What is a Transportation Master Plan?

A TMP is a strategic planning document designed to define the policies, programs and infrastructure changes required to meet future transportation needs. It will address planned future growth in Durham by developing a transportation system that balances the need for road network expansion with more transit services, cycling and pedestrian opportunities, while enhancing safety, promoting sustainability and reducing environmental impacts.

How You Can Get Involved

We invite you to visit the project web site at www.durham.ca/tmp to learn the latest information about this important study. In addition we invite you to attend the first of three rounds of Public Information Centres (PICs) to discuss the future vision of transportation in Durham. The PICs will be held on four days at four different locations, and you are welcome to drop into any of the PICs at any time during the periods noted below.

The report found it costs $182 per week or $789 per month to feed a family of four (two parents, a 14-yearold boy and an eight-year-old girl) a basic healthy diet, based on recommendations in Canada’s Food Guide. According to Deborah Lay, a public health nutritionist with the health department, a healthy diet is essential for proper child growth and development, and in decreasing the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease and osteoporosis. “For many families in Durham, after paying for shelter and other living expenses, there isn’t enough money left over to afford a healthy diet,” she said. “Food insecurity is a daily reality for these families.” When families worry that food will run out, and they have to compromise on the quality and/or quantity of food they eat, or they have to reduce their food intake altogether, they’re facing food insecurity. The report found almost eight per cent of area households experience some degree of food insecurity. In Scugog, instead of cutting back on what it hands out, the food bank is continuing to purchase the same amount of food it usually buys and is absorbing the escalating costs for the time being. In fact, added Ms. Cook, Operation Scugog is handing out about 20-per

honestly,” she said. “It’s not just the cost of groceries, hydro is going to be a killer. It’s nasty out there.” And, it’s not going to get any easier this winter season, added Ms. Cook. “We’re starting to see new clients already,” she said of the approaching cold season. “It’s going to be quite the winter and folks are going to struggle. “The barely-holding-on people are going to drop off and they’re going to have a hard time. It really tugs at your heart.” The Ontario Society of Nutrition Professionals in Public Health and the Ontario Public Health Association recommend some solutions for this problem, including: legislation for subsidies and tax incentives to support the agri-food sector; and for the short-term, implementing a $100-per-month healthy food supplement for social assistance recipients.

HOW THIS IMPACTS YOU • Local food banks calling for donations as food costs continue to increase. • A family of four earning $7,317 per months spends 11 per cent of its income on groceries. • A family of four on social assistance, such as Ontario Works, spends 37 per cent of its income on groceries. • When rent is included, a family on Ontario Works is spending 92 per cent of their income on food and shelter, leaving little money for anything else. • To donate to the Operation Scugog food bank, call 905-985-3087. • Visit durham.ca/foodsecure to learn how to eat healthfully on a budget.

After patiently waiting for the schools to tally their totals, Ms. McArthur received the good news. “It’s taken us a long time, but we’re comfortably over” the $1-million mark, she said. “We’ve reached our $1-million goal, we’ve met it.” In appreciation of the community’s efforts, Terry Fox’s father, Rolly Fox, will prepare a congratulatory video message for the community that the organizing committee will post on YouTube. “I’m proud of this community and proud of the volunteers and the people who come forth every year. It means a lot,” said Ms. McArthur. “It continues to show that Terry Fox and what he did is incredibly important to people.” As for doubling that milestone in the near future, Ms. McArthur just laughed. “I don’t have a clue. We’re just going to keep going,” she said. “It’s an accomplishment, we’re going to celebrate it and then keep doing what we’re doing.” On top of the $25,751 raised during the community run, the 11 participating Scugog schools collected $16,239, bringing the township’s 2014 total to $41,989. cent more food to each client than it usually does. “We’re giving out more food because we’re finding the food is just not lasting as long,” she said. Operation Scugog assists between 80 and 100 households each month, but who the food bank is helping seems to be shifting, noted Ms. Cook. “The (monthly) numbers are about the same, but the families that came in the past aren’t in the area anymore,” she said. “We see a lot of singles and couples but the families with children, we wonder where they’ve gone.” Ms. Cook attributes their migration out of the community to the high cost of rentals in Scugog and the lack of affordable units. As well, she continued, the skyrocketing costs of hydro, which took another leap on Nov. 1, are handcuffing people financially. “This hydro business is killing people,

Seller’s Market Continues for Durham Region DURHAM REGION, November 5, 2014 - Durham Region Association of REALTORS® (DRAR) President Jane Hurst reported 973 sales through the MLS® System in October 2014. This result represents a 5.3 per cent increase compared to 924 sales in October 2013. Through January to October, average home prices remained strong with a year-to-date increase of 9.7 per cent compared to the same period last year. “The average price of resale homes in the Durham Region in October 2014 was $393,088, a 7.5 per cent increase in comparison to $365,684 in October 2013” reported Hurst. “While home prices and sales have risen in comparison to last year, the number of new listings entering the market is 1.2 per cent lower than last year. This means that the demand for resale homes exceeds the number of homes in the market, which creates an ideal seller’s market” explained Hurst. “We expect this trend to continue for the remainder of 2014 and perhaps into the early months of 2015”. (NC) As the outside temperatures drop and the entertaining season arrives, it’s time to start thinking about a little winter cleaning to keep our homes comfortable for all of those cozy nights indoors. With doors and windows closed tightly and reduced ventilation you will want to avoid harsh chemical fumes and look for naturally-derived cleaning solutions that get the job done to leave you more quality time with love ones. Here are some simple yet effective cleaning tips to winter clean the hardest-working rooms in your home. Kitchen • Try this all-natural solution: use baking soda and vinegar in your kitchen sink drains to remove any unpleasant odours. • After decorating those holiday cookies, try an all-purpose cleaner like Green Works that is safe to use on everything from counters and tables to appliances and sinks. Bathroom • If you want an easy solution for keeping grout and tiles tidy and grime-free, try sandpaper.

Just fold the sandpaper into a crease, and work it back and forth along the grout line. If that doesn’t work, you may have better results using a pencil eraser. • To remove hard-water scale or mildew on shower and faucet heads, soak them in vinegar. If the head isn’t removable, position a plastic bag filled with vinegar over it and tape it on. Living Room • For pet lovers who don’t want to offend our four-legged friends, use baking soda as a natural deodorizer for carpets and rugs. Simply sprinkle, take a breather for five minutes and then vacuum up to help lift pesky pet-based odours. • A collection of familiar finger prints are quite likely if you own a glass coffee table. Luckily, all you need is a hard-working, heavy-lifting surface cleaner to get it looking brandnew again. Designed to deliver streak-free cleaning on glass and mirrors, Green Works Naturally Derived Glass and Surface Cleaner is an exceptional option for the clean freak in all of us. Plus, now you don’t have to worry about what those little fingers may come in contact with! More information is available at www.facebook.com/GreenWorksCanada.

DURHAM -- A local group’s final staged readings of the year are this weekend in Port Perry and Uxbridge. Theatre 3x60 series of readings of Canadian works wraps up with The Elephant Song. Listen and enjoy on Nov. 14 at the Blue Heron Books Studio, 62 Brock St. W, Uxbridge, and Nov. 15 at Queen Beans Coffee House, 180 Queen St., Port Perry. Both events begin at 7:30 p.m. “First produced in Stratford in 2004, and recently premiered on film at the 2014 TIFF, Nicolas Billon’s The Elephant Song revolves around a three-way game of cat-and-mouse between a disturbed young man, his nurse and doctor to determine the whereabouts of a missing psychiatrist,” states a press release. The readings feature Denny Corbett, Geoff Coulter and Tyler Cox and are directed by Carey Nicholson. Tickets are $12 and available in advance at Blue Heron Books, Queen Beans (cash/cheque only) and by calling 905-852-7993 (VISA/MC). Visit www.theatre3x60.ca for full details.

Riki does a few numbers for a good cause OSHAWA -- Riki Knox and Matt Williams performed as part of the Bands for Brothers in Arms music concert at Simcoe Blues and Jazz. The three-day event last weekend featured 30 bands and raised money for the Wounded Warriors Fund. Ryan Pfeiffer / Metroland

OSHAWA -- Oshawa Opera wraps up a hectic six weeks with a fundraising evening of music. Durham’s opera group presents An Evening at The Opera on Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at Kingsview United Church. “The evening will feature music from Puccini, Verdi, Donizetti, Strauss and Mozart,” says Oshawa Opera founder Kristine Dandavino. “We will sing arias, duets and Christian Vachon and Frédéric Lacroix will perform operatic transcriptions from Porgy and Bess and Norma on piano.” She noted that Oshawa Opera produced Norma on Oct. 5. It presented The Magic Flute on Nov. 2. In addition to violinist Vachon and pianist Lacroix, Dandavino, a mezzosoprano, and baritone Norman E. Brown are performing on Nov. 21. Kingsview United is at 505 Adelaide Ave. E., Oshawa. Tickets are $20, available online at www.oshawaopera.com and at the door on the night of the event. Children can attend for free. After the fundraising night, Oshawa Opera’s next scheduled production is Verdi’s La traviata on April 19 at Kingsview United.

MoJacks strict on social media policies Port Perry uses suspension of OHL players as reminder of expected behaviour Brad Kelly bkelly@durhamregion.com

Something’s not right TORONTO -- Former Olympic rider Ian Roberts, from Port Perry, was disqualified from the Horseware indoor eventing final at the Royal Winter Fair on Saturday after his horse, Copper Cove, stumbled over one of the final jumps and Roberts was dismounted. Kaitlin Abeele / Metroland

PORT PERRY -- Over time the game has evolved, and so have all of the external factors that surround hockey players at the junior level. When Clair Cornish was working his way through the junior ranks, first with the 198990 Memorial Cup-winning Oshawa Generals, and finishing up with his hometown Port Perry MoJacks, it was certainly a different era. There was a hierarchy among the players from rookie to veteran, and there was no social media. Now that he is the head coach of the Jr. C MoJacks, a social media policy is something the hockey club has had to devise. The recent incident of a couple of OHL players receiving 15-game suspensions as a result of abusing the league’s social media policy drove home the point even more. “We addressed it within the first 10 minutes of our opening night at training camp,” said Cornish of the player’s use of social media and networking tools. “If you are playing for the Port Perry MoJacks you represent them anytime, everywhere, 24 hours, seven days a week in your conduct on and off the ice. “We reiterated it with them that there’s a zero-tolerance policy from within our organization. I just reminded them to be mindful of their comments.” So far, the MoJacks haven’t had to address any off-ice issues pertaining to social media.

Times are certainly different now than when he went through the junior system. At that time, it was an era where it was a freefor-all in terms of rookie initiation. Those initiation and hazing parties, for the most part, are a thing of the past. The culture of teams has changed over time. “We’ve evolved,” said Cornish. “There’s no need to be overly aggressive with rookies and demeaning to them. There’s certainly some things like picking up pucks at the end of practice, or little things. “I think the sooner they become part of the team and feel like a part of the team, the sooner they can contribute.” The MoJacks are certainly getting contributions from everyone right now, as a pair of weekend wins upped their winning streak to five games. On Saturday they went into Little Britain and won 7-5, then had a laugher at home on Sunday afternoon, pounding North Kawartha 10-0. Cole Murray paced the attack in Little Britain with a pair of goals, while Lucas Berkers, Steve Sampson, Kyle Powell, Ryan Bernardes and Graham Lamers had the others. Against North Kawartha, Jeff Julien had the shutout, with a pair of goals each by Kyle Schweda, Jeff St. Pierre and Lucas Clark. Sampson, Murray, Lamers and Evan Wasylyk had one each. The five-game winning streak makes the four-game losing streak leading into this current run a distant memory. The offence has exploded of late, with 36 goals coming in the last five games, twice reaching double digits in that run. “The first six or eight weeks we started working on our defence. Then we shifted focus to some offensive tactics. I think the guys have responded,” said Cornish. The MoJacks sit at 11-4-1 heading into the weekend. Friday they will be in Uxbridge, returning home Sunday to face Lakefield at 2:25 p.m.
