usband and wife, Lisa and Loren Skyhorse, create incredible custom leatherworks. Together, the duo handcraft award-winning artwork as Skyhorse Saddles. Lisa and Loren started building saddles together in 1976. They share a love of horses, not only with each other, but also with their customers. With over four decades of professional experience, each design by Skyhorse Saddles is a longlasting, one-ofa-kind heirloom customers can give to their own children. “The great thing about leather is it is so functional,” Lisa said. “If it can be made out of leather, we do it. I think the really special part is that every single one is a one-of-a-kind piece, and most of the time we are working with customers so that we are building them exactly what they want.” Though the couple began working with saddles, over the years, they expanded services to provide clients with other [ 14 ]
accessories upon request, including belts, furniture and other leather art. They often engrave detailed portraits or business logos into leather products for clients, too. Lisa specializes in carving those intricate designs into leather, often highlighting them with high-quality color, finishes or embellishments, while Loren forms the base (or tree) of saddles and does most of the stitching. His signature silver and leather braiding techniques are remarkable. To source allnatural, highquality leather, the couple works with a historic tannery located in St. Louis, Missouri. And since their artwork is renowned, some pieces handcrafted by the duo are on display at art galleries and museums. As the featured artist at this year’s Home & Ranch Show, Skyhorse Saddles will showcase some of their latest works at the event. Stop by their booth to say hello and observe their incredible talent.
