From baseball’s late 1800s origin through the early part of this century, infield skins were all thought to be roughly the same.

After all, dirt was dirt, right? Well, that was the thinking, mostly due to a lack of understanding soils. As a groundskeeper, you were expected to use whatever you had and make it work. Typically, it would come down to guesswork. Sometimes it worked, but more often the groundskeeper’s guesswork failed.

That all changed in the early 2000s. Armed with experience engineering products at his family’s sand and gravel business, Grant McKnight took aim at infield soils by following the science.

He began formulating the precise blends of sand, silt, and clay for optimum performance. And, just as important was the process. The ability to replicate these unique infield soil blends and deliver consistent materials throughout the United States is what truly sparked an infield soil industry revolution.

Since 2007, DuraEdge has been the definitive name and the leader in the ballfield industry. Our unmatched expertise is why MLB and MiLB organizations trust their infield performance specifications to us.

WHAT’S INSIDE

From mine to infield

How a natural western Pennsylvania claystone becomes the catalyst to engineered soils.

over thousands of years have deposited a very special red claystone in western Pennsylvania that has become the key to DuraEdge Engineered Infield Soils.

Pittsburgh Red Bed Claystone is the unique highly-compacted clay material that resides below three layers of overburden. It takes nearly two months to access and harvest this claystone.

The precise steps of the DuraEdge manufacturing process ensures they’ll perform as their name implies — durable while holding an edge. DuraEdge infield soils simply don’t migrate like others do.

As the result of the process emerges from the final conveyor, a mountain of reddish brown DuraEdge engineered infield soil takes shape. This final product, like the individual ingredients, is regularly tested to ensure the material meets the rigid specifications for each DuraEdge product.

| OFFICIAL PARTNER OF MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL 6 1 2 8 9
It’s the Pittsburgh red bed clay that makes DuraEdge infield soils so special.

A combo of illite and kaolinite clay, red bed claystone is harvested as large boulders or stones and is made up of minerals that absorb water without major swelling, yet can dissipate the water rapidly.

A tedious 3-step process reduces the clay stones down to a fine, workable

Another key ingredient is sand. DuraEdge infield products require a very specific sand, so both sand and clay are tested regularly before production to ensure accuracy and consistency.

The conveyor deposits the sand and clay into a pugmill for final blending. Moisture in the sand as well as friction heat from the intense mixing in the pugmill force the clay to adhere to the sand — a part of the process bucket blending could never accomplish — resulting in a single homogeneous mix.

The powdered clay and sand are loaded into hoppers at the blender unit. Computers then control how much is dispensed for each specific product as the materials are added onto a conveyor.

Custom Amendments

Fixing a poorly performing infield skin is a challenging task at any level of play. The FieldSaver Process can put you on a path to a better field, regardless of your budget.

The DuraEdge FieldSaver Process is the most effective and economical way to improve underperforming infields. But, it’s not guesswork — it’s based on soil science and soil testing. If your infield is beachy, dusty, slick, or chunking out, the FS Custom Infield Amendments are the only soil amendments that will balance, condition, and stabilize your infield soil — all in one application.

Fixing your infield is great, but how can you make it last? Your FieldSaver amended infield means you’re eligible for a DuraEdge Field Assurance maintenance plan to protect your investment and ensure your infield stays performing at its highest level. The FieldSaver process is straightforward:

■ We’ll test your current infield and analyze the results.

■ We’ll identify and prescribe the right FS custom amendment.

■ We’ll install the material on your infield using one of our certified installers and a DuraEdge representative will discuss Field Assurance options with you.

The FieldSaver Process is your cost-effective alternative to remove & replace.

| OFFICIAL PARTNER OF MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL 8

DuraEdge created and perfected the process of scientifically amending infield soils to bring them into balance nearly 20 years ago. We manufacture four standard engineered soils for adjusting the makeup of existing underperforming infield soils.

Unlike harvested or blended native soil mixes where amounts of sand, silt and clay will fluctuate, DuraEdge FS soils are manufactured to meet very tight specifications that can be replicated over and over. Knowing these soils will be consistent, we are able to determine which of these will bring your infield into balance and improve your soil’s shortcomings without having to remove and replace.

FS40 – 40% silt/clay, 60% medium sand

FS50 – 50% silt/clay, 50% medium sand

FS60 – 60% silt/clay, 40% medium sand

FS90 – 90% silt/clay, 10% medium sand SAND CONTENT + -

Used to adjust high silt-to-clay ratio infield soils while increasing or maintaining medium sand content.

Applied to loose infield materials such as excessively sandy soils or infields built with crushed aggregate to increase stability.

CLAY CONTENT + -

It begins with a soil test.

You can’t fix your infield without first knowing its makeup. We developed the T.A.C.S. method — test, analyze, compare, and solve — as our standard protocol for improving existing infield soils.

Results of a soil test are analyzed to create a specific Infield Needs Report for your infield. This report documents the details of your soil test and the issues with the current soil, as well as a solution for bringing your existing soil into balance to improve its performance.

A critical piece of your Infield Needs Report is your SCR, silt-to-clay ratio. The SCR score indicates the relative performance of an infield soil and is calculated by dividing the silt content by the clay content.

The optimum SCR between 0.5 and 1.0.

The further an SCR score is from optimum, the higher the difficulty in fixing the infield soil. Soils with an SCR score below 3.0 are great candidates for our FieldSaver amendment process. SCR scores above 3.0 are better suited to a 2" cap or full remove & replace using DuraEdge infield soils.

Steps for taking a soil test…

1. Brush away any topdressing on the surface in areas you will remove samples from.

2. Excavate a 3" x 3" x 3" deep sample of infield soil and place it in a bucket. Repeat this step in 12 – 15 locations around the skinned areas of the infield.

3. With all the samples in the bucket mix the samples together and pulverize any chunks.

4. Fill a qt sized Ziploc bag with the pulverized soil sample and label the bag with the name of the field. Be sure the bag is tightly sealed.

5. Ask your DuraEdge distributor or DuraEdge representative for the sample submission form to send your infield soil sample in for testing.

It has to be done right.

Our FieldSaver protocol is the only way to ensure success. When amending your infield skin, this process not only addresses incorporating your engineered soil, but it also corrects surface drainage issues. Problems with poor surface grade will result in standing water and create recovery issues after rainfall. Fixing drainage issues ensures your infield skin will recovery as quickly as possible after a rain event.

THE FIELDSAVER PROTOCOL:

1. Remove existing lips along grass edges and return them to their original grade. Ensure grass edges are at the desired measurements.

2. Laser grade the existing infield skin to finish grade, adding additional or removing excess infield material as needed. Finish grade should have positive surface drainage when complete.

3. If possible, heavily soak the infield skin ahead of the addition of your FS soil amendment.

4. When the infield skin is stable enough after soaking, use a topdresser to evenly spread the FS engineered soil at 4 lbs/ sq ft over the entire skinned area.

5. Once spread, till the infield skin to a 3" depth using a rototiller. Do not till any deeper. Do one to two passes over the skin if using a reverse tine tiller (preferred method). Otherwise, a minimum of three passes over the infield if using a normal forward tine tiller to fully blend the infield materials.

6. Once fully blended, laser grade again to the same finish grade as before. The addition of the FS product will not increase the elevation of the infield skin.

7. Roll the infield using a 1-½ ton roller, rolling in two perpendicular directions to recompact the infield.

8. Perform a final heavy soaking to the infield.

9. Apply a topdressing to the infield skin once the field is safe to walk on. Then lightly scarify with a nail drag and smooth out with a float drag.

10. Finish up with one more roll and a final soaking.

ENGINEERED

Infield soils

All ballfields are not created equally. Different levels of play, maintenance capabilities and the access to water all play a role in what the makeup of your infield soil should be. Classify your ballfield based on these factors and you’ll be matched with the correct soil.

FIELD CLASSIFICATION SPECS

Through extensive research with groundskeepers and an understanding of the science, DuraEdge has created specifications for the makeup of infield soils that will achieve the best performance for each of three levels.

RECREATIONAL

Total Sand 70-75%; Medium Sand ≥ 50% Silt/Clay 25-30%; SCR = 0.5-1.0

Requires volunteer-level maintenance and does not require access to water.

About field classification specs…

The narrow ranges of the field classification specifications make it extremely difficult for other soil suppliers to maintain up-to-spec products on a consistent basis.

DuraEdge customers can trust that our soil products will always be up to spec. Because of our innovative manufacturing process, we are able to guarantee our infield soils will stay within spec — no matter where they are produced or where they are delivered.

ASK YOURSELF:

What is your level of maintenance? What is your access to water?

Armed with these answers, you and your DuraEdge representative or a qualified distributor can determine the right DuraEdge infield soil for your situation.

INTERMEDIATE

Total Sand 65-69%; Medium Sand ≥ 45% Silt/Clay 31-35%; SCR = 0.5-1.0

Requires at least limited maintenance and access to water.

PROFESSIONAL

Total Sand 58-62%; Medium Sand ≥ 40% Silt/Clay 38-42%; SCR = 0.5-1.0

Requires regular maintenance and access to water.

Tips for installing DuraEdge infield soils

Selecting the right infield soil is only half of the battle. Making sure it is installed correctly is equally important. If an infield material is installed incorrectly, its future success is severely crippled.

If you have questions pertaining to installation of our DuraEdge engineered infield soils, do not hesitate to contact us. You only get funding once, so it’s critical that you do it right the first time.

Here is what you need to know for a successful installation…

Detailed Installation Specifications: On bid projects, you should have a spec book that describes the project to suppliers and installers. In general, the tighter you write the specs and the more detailed the installation instructions, the better chance you have at getting exactly what you want. The same goes for prequalifying your installers. Ask for references that prove they are the right company for the job.

Subgrade Grade: The slope of the subgrade should replicate the desired finish grade, which ensures a consistent depth of infield material across the entire plane of the infield skin.

Compaction: It is important for both the infield material and the subgrade layer. If the subgrade is insufficiently compacted, there’s no firm resistance to “squeeze” the infield mix during installation. The subgrade must be compacted to at least 90% of the Proctor maximum density. If the existing subsoil is too soft to attain compaction (e.g., it is a highly organic “muck” soil), remove it and replace with a granular fill (finely crushed angular stone product) to achieve proper subgrade compaction. For the infield soil itself, install in 2" thick layers (called “lifts”) and compact each time, until you achieve a full 4" profile.

Moisture: Water allows the soil particles to slide past one another into a denser configuration. Therefore, if an infield soil is too dry during installation, the soil will not bind together properly. The surface may feel firm, but the consequences will become evident during the playing season. Rain can create a quagmire because water fills the excess pore space. Do not over water the soil during installation. Water is not compressible, so if you over-saturate the soil, it will displace (“pump”) beneath the roller, preventing full compaction and leaving ruts in the surface.

Surface Finish Grade: Standing water will soften an infield, no matter how good the material is. To keep the water moving, a consistently sloping surface grade is needed, usually from the front of the infield to the back. For the most precise grade (with a tolerance of + or - 1/8"), use lasers to guide the grading equipment. This is not the time to go cheap or ask your neighbor with a skid steer to do it for free.

Topdressings

Infield topdressings play a vital role in the management of your infield skin.

| OFFICIAL PARTNER OF MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL 18

DuraEdge Infield Topdressings

To effectively use topdressing, you must first have a firm infield soil base. Loose, sandy or shifty infield materials will quickly devour a topdressing material.

If you have an infield dealing with these issues, you need to correct your infield base soil with a FieldSaver upgrade before adding a topdressing. See page 8.

Topdressing should be applied to the surface of your infield base soil to a maximum depth of one-eighth inch to one-quarter inch. It should not be tilled in or aggressively nail dragged into the base soil.

When you maintain your infield skin, you will mostly be working the infield topdressing layer while barely scarifying into your base soil.
