FEATURED PROPERTY It was the July Fourth parade that sold them on Clarkston, Michigan. Mark Wayne and his young family sat on the sidewalk, in the shade of the old oak trees lining the main street. Fighter jets roared overhead, fire trucks rumbled past the hometown bank, “It was Hometown USA,” he says with a grin. “We were looking for a young and vibrant place to raise our family,” he says. They found it. Fifteen years later, “Son of a gun,” he says, “it’s even better.” Part of the remarkable renaissance of Detroit, just forty miles away, Clarkston has excellent schools and the walking downtown has delicious eateries and distinctive shops. Its seven miles to Michigan’s largest mall and half an hour to the new $1.2 billion hockey arena area. The Wayne’s built their dream home here, designed by nationally-acclaimed architect Dominick Tringali, who liked the result so much he featured it in his hardcover book of residential architecture. Set on the edge of a forest preserve, at the highest spot in the county, sunshine wakes them in the morning, and twenty foot high windows in the Great Room frame the sunsets.
