BMW’s Night Vision thermal camera, also marketed by FLIR as PathFindIR, sees heat not light, so drivers can see people and vehicles in the road sooner. more of a distraction than an aid in night driving, the thermal imaging camera plugs directly into the car’s navigation screen or DVD entertainment system for clearer viewing. Instead of using near infrared (NIR) technology, which relies on light reflected from the headlamps to see objects on the side of the road better, the Night Vision FLIR is not limited by the range of the headlights. The lightweight, all-weather, thermal imaging camera is easily mounted in a protected position at the front of the vehicle, and requires only two cables to be connected to any vehicle with a navigation system and/or video monitor. In fact, Night Vision can detect objects four-times farther away than the headlamps, so drivers going 65 mph have about five more seconds to react and take evasive measures if needed. Night Vision, unlike the driver’s eyes,

is not affected by the glare of oncoming headlights, allowing the driver to divert his eyes and still see the road via the monitor. FLIR is the largest manufacturer of thermal imaging cameras in the world, producing 100,000 units annually. That production will continue to grow as other luxury car manufacturers become aware of the simplicity and cost effectiveness of night vision systems like FLIR’s PathFindIR. As manufacturing output goes up, the price of what was once a high dollar, high tech military item has dropped to a consumer friendly $2,200; a small price to pay for a major increase in night-time driving peace of mind. And to ensure that your BMW maintains the high German standards that make it the ultimate driving machine, day or night.

“Night Vision can detect objects four-times farther away than the headlamps”

Because it sees heat, the Night Vision thermal camera lets drivers see hazards near the road without being blinded by oncoming headlights.
