Hello to everyone tuning in to our game against Crawley Town this evening. It’s probably an understatement to say that we have been unlucky to see our last two fixtures postponed! Ten days ago, our home game against Tranmere Rovers was called off on the Friday because the pitch simply wasn’t playable due to it being frozen; then on Saturday, heavy rain in Exeter meant that the players have had consecutive weekends without football. On the plus side, that has allowed us to do some extra work at the training ground and make an addition to the squad with the signing of Giles Coke, but I was keen for us to build on our performance at Newport. Although I was obviously disappointed to lose the game, I think it was the best we’ve played by some distance and, in truth, we dominated it. Newport have some good players and we didn’t see much of them because of the way we applied ourselves. Even before they had their player sent off, I thought we were totally dominant and looked a decent team. Unfortunately though they got an early goal in the second half and then defended very, very well - I have to give them credit for that. A mistake by us almost gave them a second, but other than that we dominated but found it difficult to create clear chances. Yes, their keeper made a good save and Stefan Payne had a decent chance but overall we didn’t quite have enough to break them down and get something from the game that the players deserved.

ALTHOUGH I WAS OBVIOUSLY DISAPPOINTED TO LOSE THE GAME, I THINK IT WAS THE BEST WE’VE PLAYED BY SOME DISTANCE AND, IN TRUTH, WE DOMINATED IT

I think seven players started the Newport game who weren’t with us at the beginning of January - plus three more on the bench. For me, the encouraging thing was that they didn’t look like a new group of players who were still getting to know each other. As much as I’d have rather have been in Michael Flynn’s position and have got the three points, there were still positives to take. I’ll be looking for us to build on those positives tonight against Crawley. However, their performances in the FA Cup this season alone prove what a dangerous side they can be. Keep supporting the lads and UTM, Paul Hurst

MACCA CAPTAIN’S COLUMN:

Evening everyone.

It’s been some time since I last wrote my notes and a long time since we last played! The weather has not been kind to us and obviously Saturday was really disappointing because, as players, once you’ve travelled all that way, all you want to do is play. However, it’s out of our hands and we have to just crack on and make the best of it. The postponements have at least allowed us plenty of time on the training ground (albeit, limited, due to snow and waterlogging) and the travelling on Friday and Saturday gave us time to bond as a team as well. I normally do a quiz on overnight stays, to help to pass the time for the lads, but frustratingly the staff (mainly Dave and Greg) have always won. But on Friday night we had some new winners! So a special mention to Luke Hendrie, Joe Adams, Stefan Payne and also Joe Bunney who contributed at least one answer for that team!

THE POSTPONEMENTS HAVE AT LEAST ALLOWED US PLENTY OF TIME ON THE TRAINING GROUND... AND THE TRAVELLING ON FRIDAY AND SATURDAY GAVE US TIME TO BOND AS A TEAM

After the way results went for us Saturday, hopefully now is time for us to go on our little run. Enjoy the game, Macca

NEW TBOYS TWO PAR

Paul Hurst made 10 additions to his squad during the transfer window. In this feature, we look at the players who joined on deadline day… and a few days after.

Joe Bunney

Six-foot-five-inch left-back Joe Bunney signed for Town on a deal until the end of the season. The 27-year-old was a free agent, after leaving Hartlepool United last month in order to pursue a career back in the EFL. Bunney made his name at Rochdale and helped the club secure promotion to League One in 2013-14. Over a six-year period, he made over 140 appearances scoring 17 goals for the club before spells with Northampton Town, Blackpool, Bolton Wanderers, Matlock Town and most recently Hartlepool United.

Lenell John-Lewis

Striker Lenell John-Lewis returned to Blundell Park on transfer deadline day, signing from Hereford United on an 18-month deal. The 31-year-old had scored 13 goals for The Bulls in the National League North this season prior to rejoining The Mariners. The Shop made over 100 appearances for Town between January 2013 and May 2015, scoring 30 goals. He’s also had spells with Newport County and Shrewsbury Town.

Jake Eastwood

Goalkeeper Jake Eastwood joins on loan from Premier League side Sheffield United until the end of the season. The six-footthree goalkeeper previously worked with Paul Hurst at Scunthorpe United last season. Eastwood spent the first half of the season on loan at Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock but injury restricted him to just two appearances. Following a full recovery, Jake is now fit and ready to push skipper James McKeown for the number one jersey.

09

Joe Adams

Highly-rated midfielder Joe Adams joins on loan from Championship club Brentford for the rest of the season. The 19-year-old Welsh Under 21 international joined the Bees in July 2019 on a three-year deal after progressing through the ranks and impressing at Bury. Adams, who can also play as a wing back, has scored nine goals in 16 appearances for Brentford’s B team this season.

Julien Lamy

Winger Julien Lamy signed a deal until the end of the season shortly before our trip to Newport County. The 21-year-old began his career in his native France with Brest II and Plabennec before signing a one-year deal with Rotherham United in 2019. Lamy joined AFC Wimbledon on loan in January last year but only made two appearances before the season was concluded early.

LENELL JOHN-LEWIS

IN THE SPOTLIGHT I

f we can avoid another postponement tonight, it’s likely that Lenell John-Lewis will make his second home debut for The Mariners.

The tireless frontman ended weeks of speculation when he re-signed for Town on deadline day, following a short but prolific spell with Hereford FC in the National League North. Prior to the 31-year-old signing an 18-month deal, it looked as though contractual reasons may prevent him from returning to Blundell Park. But the striker, affectionately known as ‘The Shop’, joined for his second spell just hours before the close of the transfer window. The former Lincoln City and Bury man, of course, played for us between January 2013 and May 2015. In that time, he featured in over 100 games and scored 30 goals; 20 of those coming in the 2014-15 campaign which ended in play-off heartache at the hands of Bristol Rovers. He joined Newport County in 2015 and although his time in South Wales was blighted by serious injury, he did play a part in securing The Exiles’ Football League status in 2016-17. John-Lewis teamed up with Paul Hurst at Shrewsbury Town in 2017 and featured 44 times as The Shrews narrowly missed out on promotion to the Championship. Another serious injury cut short his time at New Meadow and after almost 12 months on the sidelines, he signed for Hereford FC to play for his former Mariners teammate Josh Gowling in the National League North. Town fans know what to expect from John-Lewis. During his first spell, the striker often spearheaded The Mariners attack with grit, determination and lots of heart - attributes that Paul Hurst certainly looks for in his players. After notching 13 goals for The Bulls prior to return in February, The Shop is also in good form in front of goal. Let’s hope he can keep it up for the rest of the season.

CAREER:

Grantham Town, Lincoln City, Bury, Grimsby Town, Newport County, Shrewsbury Town, Hereford FC.

FEBRUARY

Rotherham United U18s 0-1 Grimsby Town Under 18s The Mariners made a strong start in a well contested game, having plenty of spells of possession and coming close through Luis Adlard and Jamie Potts. Rotherham then started to turn the screw with a series of long throws, corners and free kicks putting the Town back line under pressure. However the young Mariners held firm until the break. Town began turning their possession into more chances in the second period. Aaron Braithwaite’s long-range effort was well saved, and Potts and Adlard both saw efforts go narrowly wide. Town eventually broke the deadlock after sharp interplay between Evan Khouri, Luis Adlard and Edwin Essel led to Harvey Tomlinson, who beat his man and was brought down in the box. Tomlinson himself stepped up and dispatched the spot kick to earn Town the three points. Town: Boyes, Blakeley, Khouri, Davey, Smaller, Goundry, Potts, Braithwaite, Essel (Stratton), Adlard, Tomlinson. Subs: Scott, Jacobs, Drinkell, Bramwell, Stratton.

Huddersfield Town U18s 0-4 Grimsby Town U18s The Terriers started the game brightly, keeping possession well without really hurting Town. Neil Woods’ side then started to gain the upper hand through some sharp play; Owen Davey hit a snapshot which was well saved by the keeper before Josh Smaller smashed home from a free kick to open the scoring. Within a few minutes, Smaller got his second when he headed home a Braithwaite corner. Town went close again through Adlard and Tomlinson but the score remained 2-0 at the break. Huddersfield enjoyed some possession in the second half but they rarely tested The Mariners backline or forced any saves from Patrick Boyes. Town added a third when they pressed high, stole the ball and Adlard swept home. Town continued to press for a fourth goal and they were rewarded when substitute Harry Milner robbed the Huddersfield centre back and slid the ball past the keeper. Town: Boyes, Blakeley, Khouri, Davey, Smaller, Goundry, Potts (Scott), Braithwaite (Bramwell), Essel (Milner), Adlard, Tomlinson. Subs: Grist, Jacobs, Bramwell, Scott, Milner.

JOSH SMALLER

Grimsby Town U18s 3-3 Lincoln City U18s Both sides started this Lincolnshire Derby well; Adlard was denied by the Imps’ keeper early on, and Boyes made a good stop from close range. Town who took the lead when Adlard’s through ball found Tomlinson who poked past the keeper after 20 minutes. The Imps responded immediately after some neat play around the box resulted in a penalty which was well dispatched. Before the break, Milner hit the bar for Town and Khouri saw a shot well saved by the keeper. In the second half, City took the lead after being awarded a second penalty and made it three after some fine individual play saw a curling shot nestle in the corner. Despite going two goals down, Town continued to plug away and went close through Essel and Louis Boyd. With 15 minutes to go, Jamie Bramwell tapped in from close range to narrow the lead to just one goal. Neil Woods’ side continued to press the Imps and when Khouri’s ball landed for Adlard, he laid it to Hodgson who slotted home to make it 3-3.

38. JAMES TILLEY

10. ASHLEY NADESAN

16. TOM NICHOLS

James Tilley is a player that Mariners fans will be very aware of. The 22-year-old was allowed to leave Blundell Park last month and sign a two-and-a-half year deal with Crawley Town. The versatile forward had been a regular at Town since former boss Ian Holloway lured him away from his boyhood club, Brighton & Hove Albion. After making his debut aged just 16 years old, he managed just three further appearances before transferring to Blundell Park on an 18-month deal last January. During his five years on the fringes at the Amex Stadium, Tilley spent time on loan at Cork City and Yeovil Town, where his nimble feet and ball carrying ability caught the eye of Holloway. Last weekend Tilley scored his first goal for his new club in their 1-0 win against Colchester United.

With five goals and five assists so far this season, pacey striker Ashley Nadesan could be a bit of a handful for the Town defenders tonight. The 26-year-old’s career started with Horley Town, and over the course of three seasons after breaking into the first team he scored 144 goals. His prolific non league form earned a move to Fleetwood Town in 2016, although his Football League debut didn’t come until August 2017. Later that season he joined Carlisle on loan and scored four in 15 appearances for The Cumbrians. The striker returned to Brunton Park in 2018, scoring nine goals in 28 games during the 2018-19 season. Since joining Crawley in 2019, he’s scored 12 goals, including one in the Reds FA Cup victory against Leeds United last month.

Tom Nichols is a forward who’s comfortable playing either as an old-fashioned number 9 or a little deeper in the number 10 position. The 27-year-old joined Crawley in the summer following a three year spell playing in League One for Bristol Rovers. The striker moved to the Memorial Ground for £350k in 2017 from Peterborough United after weighing in with 13 goals in 51 appearances during 2016-17 for the Posh. Nichols began his career with Exeter City in 2010 and after a series of loans at Dorchester Town, Hereford United and Bath City, he broke into the Grecians side during the 2013-14 season and went on to feature over 100 times before his transfer to Peterborough. Strong in the air and good on the deck, Crawley’s top scorer is likely to be at the heart of anything the Reds’ create this evening.

Career: Horley Town, Fleetwood Town, Carlisle United (Loan).

Career: Brighton & Hove Albion, Cork City (Loan), Yeovil Town (Loan), Grimsby Town.

22

Career: Exeter City, Dorchester Town (Loan), Hereford United (Loan), Bath City (Loan), Dorchester Town (Loan), Peterborough United, Bristol Rovers, Cheltenham Town (Loan).

SIX

OF THE BEST

vs CRAWLEY TOWN By John Kirk

As we've only played Crawley 11 times all-told before tonight's match, I'll be doing something different. This will be all the teams that we have played starting with the letters “Cr!” That comes to four different teams. My guess is most fans will be able to get three out of the four teams involved… I'll leave the most difficult to last. Let's get off the mark with Crawley...

MATT GREEN WHEELS AWAY AFTER SCORING BACK IN NOVEMBER

CRAWLEY 1-2 TOWN 24TH NOVEMBER 2020

Town had been hammered 5-0 by Tranmere in their previous match, and when Crawley took the lead after just four minutes via Max Watters, all Town fans must have feared the worst, and another drubbing. However, Matt Green scored on 35 minutes, leaving the second half with all to play for. Our own Max – Max Wright – scored six minutes after the restart, and as far as goals were concerned, that was that. It was the last time that we scored two goals in a game (at the time of writing)! Up next in the “CR” stakes… it’s Crewe!

CREWE 1–5 TOWN 4TH FEBRUARY 1911

We can all name Northwich Victoria as Town’s very first game in the newly formed Second Division of the Football League, but remembering who the second match (and the very first away league game) was against is less easily remembered. It was Crewe, a mere 12 miles as the crow flies from Northwich. We’ll skate over the result (Crewe won by the only goal), and move rapidly on to 20th January 1894, when Town and Crewe drew 3-3. This was Town’s second

26

season of league football, and they had only ever drawn one other game (against Lincoln, the previous season). In those days, there was a proliferation of high scores for or against, hence the rarity of any draws at all! But on to the title match! Town hammered five past the Railwaymen on their home turf with “Ranji” Hubbard scoring a brace and one each from James Gordon, Henry Leonard and Harry Springthorpe. Harry is remembered as a hero in Grimsby. He had been a bank clerk in the south of Lincolnshire, but when signed by the Mariners he moved banks to Barclays. Unfortunately, because of work commitments he frequently had to miss away games! Even so, he played for England amateurs, and touring with an England side to Prague and Budapest. He was one of Grimsby’s “fallen” during the Great War. He had joined the Lincolnshire Yeomanry shortly after the start of the war, and was posted to the Eastern Mediterranean with that regiment. It was a mounted regiment, and they took their horses with them on the “Mercian.” Shortly after leaving Gibraltar they were tailed by a German submarine. It is thought that having to clean out the horses – with the horse manure thrown overboard, the submarine was able to follow the trail quite easily, and off the coast of Algeria, it opened up on the Mercian with its deck gun. Harry was killed instantly by a shell, and buried at sea.

TOWN 2 – 0 CREWE 4TH MAY 1971

This was the final game of 1970-71 season, with the Mariners destined to finish sixth from bottom, and Crewe just below half way. Tees and Bobby Ross scored Town’s goals… but that isn’t what was remarkable. Starting with the game against Colchester on April 20th 1971, and extending into the first two games of the next (Lawrie McMenemy) season, Town played no fewer than six consecutive home games and won all six! Next CR – yes, Crystal Palace!

CRYSTAL PALACE 5–0 TOWN 5TH MARCH 1996

Not exactly Town’s best performance, in a season where we had some great results, but one of my favourite games for a completely different reason. The Town fans were in fine form, but on this occasion they were to witness a bit of a drubbing. We were talking to one of the Palace stewards, who revealed to us when the score was 4-0 that he had a bet at enormous odds that Palace would win 5-0. The news spread round the Town fans, as the inevitable fifth goal went in. Never have we witnessed a man go through the trauma of wanting his team to score, but knowing that if they did he’d lose £800 for the “pleasure.” Up and down he paced, hoping against hope that neither we, nor his own team would add to the final result. He was in mental

agony. Of course he got a lot of friendly ribbing from the world’s greatest supporters before the final whistle, and we all cheered his good luck! The Palace fans, who knew nothing of the drama unfolding in our part of the ground, gave us a tremendous parting cheer and long applause!

TOWN 5–2 PALACE 2ND MARCH 2002

Well, I couldn’t just leave Palace with a victory like that, could I? So here we go – a fine 5-2 Blundell Park win under Paul Groves. Andy Todd scored the first with Michael Boulding and then Bradley Allen both scoring immediately before half time. Palace handily gave us an own goal for the fourth, and Dave Smith rounded off the five two minutes before the end! And the fourth “CR” team? Why Croydon Common, of course!

TOWN 8-1 CROYDON COMMON 26TH JANUARY 1911

Town were playing in the Midland League having not been re-elected at the end of the previous season, but nevertheless were straight into the FA Cup in Round one where they were drawn to play Croydon Common. In a one-sided match, Henry Leonard scored a hat-trick, “Ranji” Hubbard and Albert Worth a brace apiece, and the aforementioned Harry Springthorpe got the other. Town finished the season top of the Midland League and were voted straight back in two the Second Division!

Did you know the player to move for the highest ever fee between non league clubs played for both Crawley Town and The Mariners?

Richard Brodie was known for rubbing defenders, and opposition supporters, up the wrong way and generally being a nuisance. But there was always more to the striker’s game than that. Brodie was strong, deceptively quick and certainly knew where the back of the net was as well. As a young teenager playing for Wickham FC, he scored 21 goals in 35 appearances the season before he joined York City - the club where he became one of the most feared strikers in non league. Brodie played a starring role when The Minstermen avoided relegation in 2008-09 and then hit 34 goals in 2009-10 as they reached the playoffs. His form that season caught the eye of many a suiter (including The Mariners, who had a bid rejected during the January transfer window), but following York’s failure to win promotion, Brodie signed for Crawley Town in a deal believed to be worth £275k. The deal made the Geordie the most expensive player to move between two clubs in non-league. Brodie would go on to score 13 goals in 45 appearances in 2010-11, as The Reds won promotion to the Football League. However, Matt Tubbs and Craig McAllister were often Steve Evans’ preferred partnership and the striker was allowed to join Fleetwood Town to help them with their promotion push in 2011-12. After a spell on loan with League Two Morecambe, Brodie joined Town in a similar deal in January 2013 to reignite The Mariners’ title hopes. In his fourth game for Town, the striker looked every bit the player who’d broken the non-league transfer record when his performance - and goal - inspired Scott and Hurst’s side to victory against Alfreton Town. A week later, his goal earned Town three valuable points in a scrappy game against Telford. But then it all seemed to go wrong for the former York City man. The Mariners lost six of his final seven appearances; including the FA Trophy Final against Wrexham. In fact, Brodie’s last act in a black and white shirt was skying a penalty during the shoot-out defeat to the Red Dragons at Wembley. Released from Crawley, Brodie had short spells with a number of National League clubs; hoping he’d re-find the form from his earlier career. He joined hometown club Gateshead, Hereford United (to work with his old boss Martin Foyle), Southport, Aldershot Town, even York City for a second time, but his fitness was questioned by Gary Mills despite being the club’s top scorer. In recent years, he’s been on the books at Boston United, Solihull Moors, Rushall Olympic, Warrington Town, Ramsbottom United, Ilkeston Town and Skelmersdale Town where the 33-year-old scored eight in 28 appearances last season prior to the pandemic.

CONNECTIONS:

BEGINNINGS

Sam Lenthall recalls our visit to Crawley at the start of the 2010-11 season. The encounter wasn’t only our first against The Reds, it was also our first game in non league.

T

he 2010-11 season was one of big uncertainties for all involved at Grimsby Town Football Club. We were heading into uncharted territory, going to towns we’d never heard of, and playing against teams we’d never played before. But with uncertainty comes a certain sense of optimism, and that’s something that even the most positive of Town fans would have struggled to muster during the season prior. In many, or, to be fair, most ways, relegation to nonleague was a very bitter pill to swallow. But after two seasons of relegation fodder football I headed into my first season of supporting a non-league club with the notion that at the very least, we might at least start winning some games and if we lived up to promise, we might even have a promotion season. It seems strange typing that now, knowing what we know, but after that fateful day in Burton, it felt strangely relieving to draw a line under it and start anew. This was the beginning of a journey that we hoped would last just a season, maybe two. If only. I remember that first game of the season against Crawley very well. They were a team very much on the up, they’d spent big, had free soring Matt Tubbs up front and our favourite pantomime villain Steve Evans at the helm. We couldn’t have had a bigger test on the opening game, so an away win at the league favourites would do wonders for the fans, players and everyone associated with the club. We’d assembled a squad that, on paper, looked quite impressive at the time. We’d kept hold of the few shining lights from the latter half of the season before in Lee Peacock, Mark Hudson and Michael Coulson, signed some solid old pros in Mickey Cummins and Kenny Arthur, and a certain blonde haired soon-to-be goal machine in Alan Connell. Many questioned the signing of Connell at the time; his goal scoring record wasn’t exactly impressive, but after a great pre-season the fans were already warming to him, and as we all now know, this first foray in non-league ended up being the Alan Connell show.

30

WE HAD TO LICK OUR WOUNDS, DUST OURSELVES DOWN, ACCEPT WHERE WE WERE AND SIMPLY START PUTTING THE BALL IN THE BACK OF THE NET AND WINNING FOOTBALL MATCHES The walk from the train station was a strange one. It’s a quiet town, Crawley, and the leafy suburban walk to the pub next to the ground was one that felt quaint and different at the time, but would be all too common five years on (at least there were actual footpaths though, *cough* Eastleigh *cough*). This was a season of firsts, and the Broadfield Stadium was the first in what would be many visits to relatively new and amenable stadiums, our first visit there and our first ever game against Crawley Town. It’s strange, writing about a match I attended almost 11 years ago, and I’ve purposely not done any reading

up on the match to jog my memory. It’s fair to say that writing about or summarising the technicalities of the beautiful game is not my strong point and I’d like to think I’ve got a pretty good memory, but I’d be stretched to remember the ins and outs of this game exactly. What I can remember though, is the feeling that this was a big day for Grimsby Town. We had to lick our wounds, dust ourselves down, accept where we were and simply start putting the ball in the back of the net and winning football matches. The game itself, perhaps predictably, was not a classic. Looking back at that team now, it’s fair to say it was a team of triers, with the odd player in Connell, Bore or even Rob Eagle, that were capable of producing a little bit of magic on their day. We were unspectacular against Crawley, and would go on to be unspectacular throughout the season save for the odd great result (A 7-2 thriller on New Year’s Day against Mansfield, if memory serves!) But the difference with this game was that we still got the win. In a match of few chances, we had that stroke of luck with Crawley getting their goalkeeper sent off in the

first half and we immediately capitalised, scoring from the resulting free kick. It wasn’t a great free kick…more of a scuffed side footed shot from our bleached hair, tattooed talisman Lee Peacock. But it didn’t matter at all. It went in, and it’s a goal I’ll never forget. Nothing at all beats Grimsby Town scoring a goal, and a summer without football always seems to last far too long; this one in particular seemed to last an age. We needed to put the relegation behind us and this was the way to do it. Even the most cynical of Town fans would find it difficult to bet against us after going one nil up against ten men, and the rest of the game was seen out in a professional manner. The fact that we didn’t capitalise on them being a man down and go on to add a couple of more goals is perhaps telling of the 2010-2011 season as a whole, but on that day, we’d beaten the league favourites (who would go on to win the league by some margin, with Tubbs scoring 37 league goals) away from home and anything was possible. It was very much the beginning of a new era and although it wasn’t particularly pretty, we’d done a job and gotten off to the best possible start.
