WELCOME BACK TO PARK DRIVE FOR OUR SECOND SATURDAY HOME GAME IN A ROW.

The FA Cup is an important competition to us and it is one we will be looking to go as far as possible in, just like so many teams in non-league football. Harpenden Town have already beaten a team in our division, so today’s fixture will be a tough contest and I’m sure they will be looking to cause an upset.

Unfortunately, we have started with two defeats, however I feel on different days both results would have gone the other way. Had it not have been for big decisions going against us in the opening stages of Wednesday night’s defeat, I’m confident we would have maintained momentum and gone on to pick up a positive result. That being said, we need to start scoring goals and capitalising on the chances we create whether that be from set pieces or from entries into the penalty area.

THE MANAGER ABRAHAMSPAUL“WENEEDTOSTARTSCORINGGOALSANDCAPITALISINGONTHECHANCESWECREATE”05

A big warm welcome to Mickey, all of his team, their volunteers and supporters. I hope everyone has a safe journey back after the Thanksmatch. once again for support so far this season and I hope you enjoy today’s game.

Tom Middlehurst made his debut between the sticks, whilst Brad Ihionvien, Harvey Sayer, George Forrest Laste Dombaxe, Lance Akins and Johnville Renee made their first, second or third debuts for the club.

Within moments of coming on, Logan almost recorded his first Jammers goal, however the Tilbury shotstopper made a diving save to keep Dylan at bay. Up the other end, Sam Coombes provided a last ditch tackle prevent Roman Campbell from extending his sides lead, as the Jammers defence survived. The substitutions made by Abrahams almost had the desired impact, as McClenaghan skipped his way through midfield, but was unable to control the ball on a hard concrete-like surface, as the ball bobbled out of his control to deny what would have been a cracking individual goal. Up the other end, Middlehurst made a superb save to deny the ever dangerous Campbell. As the Jammers pushed forward for an opening day equaliser, they were unable to convert a number of half chances with Logan, Ihionvein and Sayer all going close to the first goal of the season. In the 89th minute, the visitors secured all three points with a breakaway goal after Joe Turpin conceded possession inside Tilbury’s half. Alex Clark broke away and despite a last ditch challenge, the dangerous winger provided a delicate chip over the onrushing Middlehurst to hand his side all three points on the opening day of the season.

Paul Abrahams’ first game in permanent charge ended in defeat, in what was a disappointing opening day of the season. In his first game in charge since taken over as Manager, Paul Abrahams handed out several debuts from the start, including to several returning faces.

After finishing last seasons campaign, the Jammers would’ve been looking to get off to a positive start and looked in command throughout the first half, without being able to take their chances in front of goal. Ihionvien went closest as his effort was tipped on to the bar, whilst Forrest had a headed effort cleared off the line. Up the other end, Middlehurst was called in to action on just two occasions, making two saves to keep his clean sheet in tact. On the stroke of the afternoon, the game was flipped on it’s head by the man with the whistle. After failing to blow for a free kick for a foul on Ihionvien, Maldon eventually won a free kick as Scott Kemp was pulled to the ground. Following the free kick, a scuffle broke out which appeared to stem from nothing, as the players pushed and shoved, Kemp was pushed to the floor and Laste Dombaxe intervened in an attempt to split up the altercation. In doing so, the Referee adjudged Dombaxe to have acted recklessly and gave him his marching orders, with a straight red card. Kemp was cautioned as a result of the incident, whilst Billy Harris somehow escaped with only a yellow card, when on another day, could’ve perhaps been shown a red. In the blistering heat, the second half was always going to be a tough ask for Abrahams’ Jammers with a man less than their opponents. In the 52nd minute, things became even tougher for the home side. As Ihionvein conceded possession on the halfway line, the visitors broke forward and punished the Jammers. With Sayer trying to track back from his forward run, Billy Harris who should’ve been sent off in the first half, found space in behind the defence, cut in side and beat Middlehurst at his near post, with the ball landing in the back of the net.

Despite being a goal behind and a man down, the Jammers continued to look dangerous in attack and dominated possession whilst Tilbury appear comfortable being camped in their own half, looking to spring a counter attack when the opportunity presented. Abraham’s rang the changes with Bradley McClenaghan and Logan being introduced in efforts to spark something in attack.

“DAVE WAS A POPULAR FACE AT PARK DRIVE, RARELY MISSING EITHER A HOME OR AWAY GAME UNTIL MOST RECENTLY. DAVE WAS ALWAYS ON HAND TO GREET OUR OPPOSITION, OFFICIALS, AND PLAYERS”

Everyone at Maldon & Tiptree would like to offer their heartfelt condolences to Dave’s wife, his two sons and daughter, their family and all of Dave’s friends at this terribly sad time. Details regarding Dave’s funeral will be released at the appropriate time.

Dave, aged 83, passed away this week after a battle with illness. Dave was a popular face at Park Drive, rarely missing either a home or away game until most recently. Dave was always on hand to greet our opposition, officials, supporters and players. Having been a long-standing volunteer for the Jammers, the football club were lucky enough to inherit Dave when Tiptree United and Maldon Town amalgamated in 2010. Dave will be sorely missed by everyone at the football club and his charm and infectious personality will always remain irreplaceable. The passing of Dave follows soon after his good friend, Dave Garwood, who sadly passed earlier this summer. The two Daves, as they are affectionately known, were rarely seen apart and often travelled together to away fixtures.

MALDON & TIPTREE ARE SAD TO ANNOUNCE THE PASSING OF MUCH-LOVED VOLUNTEER, DAVE WILLSHER.

Maldon & Tiptree suffered their second defeat in as many games as they lost away from home against Grays Athletic. Manager, Paul Abrahams made changes to his starting eleven, handing Dylan Logan his first start in a Jammers shirt, whilst Brad McClenaghan made his first start of the season after appearing as substitute on Saturday. It’s fair to say that the opening stages of the contest were controlled by the Jammers, sporting their new away kit for the 2022/23 season. However, inside the first ten minutes, Tom Middlehurst made two good saves to deny Grays. In the 14th minute, George Winn was lucky to escape a red card as his second late tackle resulted in Logan being left in a heap, whilst Winn survived. From the resulting set piece, Danny Sambridge was on hand to make a great save to deny youngster Brad Ihionvien. In the 19th minute, the Jammers appeared to have opened the scoring however following a period of confusion, the goal was ruled out. George Forrest swivelled inside the penalty and diverted the ball beyond Sambridge, with the Assistant Referee keeping his flag down, the Referee decided to disallow the goal for offside after some persuasion from the home defence. The Jammers continue to feel hard done-by as appeals for a penalty were waved away, before Grays went close up the other end to opening the scoring. In the 34th minute, things went from bad to worse as the hosts opened the scoring for the evening within their first goal of the season. A quick throw-in on the right wing caught the Maldon defence off guard, with full-back Courtney Homans skipping through the defenders who only watched on, before Homans toe-poked the ball beyond Middlehurst, who could’ve perhaps done better. Maldon almost responded immediately, with Sambridge spilling an effort from Kamani McFarlane for a corner. With half-time approaching, the Jammers clung on and had Middlehurst to thank for keeping the deficit at just one. The tall shot-stopper made a string of saves to first deny Aaron Gordon and then Sam Bantick on the stroke of the break, after Laste Dombaxe conceded possession in a dangerous area. During the interval, Abrahams made a double change in an effort to shake his team up. Scott Kemp and Jake Giddings were brought on, with the later making his Jammers debut, Joe Turpin and Brad Ihionvein were the men replaced. The second half started and replicated the first half, with the Jammers wasting half-chances, whilst Middlehurst was called upon at the other end to once again, deny Gordan with a diving save. Forrest had the chance to tuck the ball in to the net for the second time in the evening, however the ball bounced away awkwardly on the plastic surface.

In the 66th minute, Kemp forced a smart save from Sambridge, followed by a header from the resulting corner which Lance Akins sent sailing over the bar. With twenty minutes left on the clock, Grays doubled their lead. Corey Davidson who had only just been brought on, tapped home at the far post with his first touch of the game, coming back to haunt the Jammers after making just the one appearance for them last season. In truth, the Jammers looked relatively toothless towards the end of the match, without managing to force Sambridge in to anymore saves of note. Kacy Parish was introduced in the 75th minute, replacing Dylan Logan as Abrahams’ made his final change. The final chance of the evening fell to George Forrest in stoppage time, however his drilled effort from inside the penalty are flew over the bar in what was the last kick of the match. 11

Whilefulfilled.slight tweaks such as changing kick-off times and increasing travelling expenses will make a difference in balancing the books, clubs and volunteers can also play their part. Creating a safe and comfortable environment amid the parameters of your stadium goes a long way and helps to enhance community engagement which in turn has an effect on your club’s ability to generate secondary income from clubhouse/refreshments and merchandise etc. But let’s not start to panic just yet, however. Average attendance figures across Non-League remain as healthy as ever and there are no indications as yet that the cost of living crisis is preventing the average fan from clicking through the turnstiles. It’s the actions of the loyal supporter which are keeping Non-League club self-sustainable in comparison to their EFL counterparts and that’s what makes football at this level unique. We’ve united before and beaten off the effects of Covid, now we can do it again. Couch

I haven’t forgotten it and everything has got worse since “We’vethen. done some work as to how much floodlights actually cost, and we know in cup competitions we allow £75 to £85 for floodlights, but is that enough? It used to be. “What it’s going to be on the new energy costings, we don’t know - but certainly for league matches if clubs can go to a 12:30 kick-off or even if they just come forward an hour or so, they can save themselves some Butmoney.”it’snot just energy costs which are hitting clubs in the pocket. Travel costs have also sky-rocketed to the point where coach travel is now a thing of the past for Non-League clubs. That leaves players having to pay for their own fuel and between 10-15 extra cars on the road for each away journey. Hardly ideal when it comes to protecting our environment, is it? To combat this, Harris revealed that coach travel expenses that clubs can claim for the FA Cup, FA Trophy and FA Vase have been increased by 20 per cent this year to ensure all fixtures are

First, of course, there was the curse of the Covid pandemic, which kicked in within three months of the decade starting and ended up curtailing back-to-back seasons from Step 2 and below, right up until the start of the 2021-22 campaign. Just when we thought all was well with the world again, we then get hit with the next crisis to engulf society and put our Non-League clubs at threat once again. As energy and fuel bills soar to unprecedented levels, clubs, fans and the game as a whole have been left feeling the pinch. The question is ‘what can we do about it’? In his column in this week’s NLP, Northern Premier League chairman Mark Harris acknowledged the extent of the problem and the lengths that league chiefs have gone to cut down Harriscosts. told us that a recent report revealed that around 2,600 grass roots football clubs folded as a result of Covid with a further 6,000 across the UK in grave danger of following suit if we do not address the situation swiftly. Household energy bills increased by a record 54 per cent in April and are likely to rise substantially again in October. One NPL club, previously paying 15p per kWh, now has to pay over 65p, taking their annual spend up to £100,000. With that in mind, fellow Pitching In Trident league member, the Isthmian League, issued a statement earlier this month offering its 82 member clubs at Steps 3 and 4 the opportunity of bringing forward Saturday kick-off times from 3pm to 12.30pm in order to save on Chairmancosts.Nick Robinson explained: “In March, I went to a ground when things were just starting to go up and the clubs said to me ‘our energy bills have gone up this amount - can you help us, can we kick off early?’

MALDON & TIPTREE FC CLUB HISTORY

In 2009, Ed Garty took over the ownership of Maldon Town from Michael Kirkham, whilst still in charge of running Tiptree United and installed Alan Brockhouse as Maldon Town’s new chairman. Following the takeover, Colin Wallington returned for a second spell in charge of Maldon Town, leaving his post as Tiptree United manager immediately. Colin previously managed Maldon Town from 2003 until 2007, having achieved promotion in the 2005-06 via the play-off final. Having left Maldon in 2007, Colin went on to manage Tiptree United where he achieved promotion winning the Eastern Counties Division One title in the 2007/08 season. Until the conclusion of the 2009/10 season both Maldon Town & Tiptree United played their home games at Park Drive, under a ground share Inarrangement.thesummer of 2010, Maldon Town & Tiptree United amalgamated to form, Maldon & Tiptree Football Club, under the ownership of Ed Garty. As a result of the amalgamation, Tiptree United withdrew from the Essex Senior League, resulting in the club’s last ever fixture being a 3-1 defeat against Enfield 1893 on 24 April 2010. Maldon & Tiptree took the place of Maldon Town in the Isthmian Division One North. Following the retirement of Colin Wallington, Assistant Manager, Brad King and Glen Knight were appointed as the clubs Joint-Manager. As the pair’s first managerial role, the new club witnessed wholesale changes with only a handful of players remaining who finished the season with Maldon Town and Tiptree United, respectively. The 2010-11 campaign saw the new club remain in or around the play-off positions for the majority of the season, finishing in eighth place to finish the season with sixty-three points. Despite the high turnover of players, the good standard of football was maintained and it was in the end, a disappointing end to 16

the season, for the club to fall away in the later stages of the season when suspensions and injuries eventually took their toll to leave the club frustratingly short of the play-off positions at the end of April. The 2011-12 season, proved to not be so successful and in November 2011, King and Knight were relieved of their duties with immediate effect. Ex-Charlton professional Mike Flanagan was appointed as Caretaker Manager and remained in place until the end of the season, steering the club to a respectful mid-table finish, managing thirty-three games and finishing with a win percentage of At49.12%.thestart of the 2012-13 campaign, Ex-Stansted & Redbridge boss Terry Spillane was appointed as Manager, and Mike Flanagan departed the club. The change of management, once again brought wholesale changes with the playing squad. Ex Tiptree United manager, Jody was brought to the club as Terry’s Assistant Manager. After a fantastic and unbeaten start to the season, the club found themselves at the top of the table but an incredible run by eventual Champions Grays Athletic meant Maldon had to settle for a place in the play-offs – Terry’s side remained unbeaten until Boxing Day, when they lost away from home against local rivals Heybridge Swifts. At the end of September 2014, Alan Kimble was appointed as manager and remained in charge for the remainder of the season, however the side struggled and more changes in the playing staff occurred. Maldon finished the season in nineteenth place with only forty-nine points. During the 2014-15 season, Media Officer at the time, Richard Buckby ran a competition for supporters to vote for a club nickname, with the options The River Boys, The Marshmen, The Mudmen and The Jammers available. The vote took place in January 2015 and was featured on National Radio station, TalkSport, with the The Jammers winning the vote with over 50% and being the2014-15completionconfirmedoftheseason,clublinkedwithColchesterUnitedandthetwoformedcloseties,which

resulted in ex Ipswich Town midfielder, David Wright being appointed as First Team Manager. Wright remained in charge until December 2015 as he was appointed Assistant Manager of Colchester United. Liam Bailey took charge of the First Team on a temporary basis, only managing one game, which finished four-all against Tilbury on Boxing Day in 2015. Moving into 2016, ex-Leiston Manager, Steve Ball was appointed First Team Manager and steered the club to a respectable finish in the league table climbing to seventh place, only missing out on the playoff places by nine points. In the closed season, a change of Management at Colchester United saw Steve Ball appointed as their Assistant Manager, leaving his position of Maldon & Tiptree Manager as a result. Ex-Manchester City midfielder, Kevin Horlock was then appointed as First Team manager ahead of the 2016-17 campaign and for the majority of the season, the Jammers sat at the top of the table before slipping away to finish in second place. Horlock’s side managed to reach the play-off final, however lost to Thurrock one-nil. The following campaign was not quite as successful for Horlock, with Maldon finishing just outside the play-off places in seventh place, with sixty-nine points. After managing 112 games, Kevin Horlock departed in the closed season and was replaced by ex-Colchester defender, Wayne Brown. In Brown’s first season in charge, the 2018-19 season, the Jammers finished in second place and reached the play-off final, but lost on penalties against local rivals, Heybridge Swifts.

The 2019-20 season was one to remember for the club, but for the right and wrong reasons. The club achieved great things in the Emirates FA Cup. Having reached the First Round proper of theWayne Brown 17

competition, Maldon beat League Two side, Leyton Orient away from home, taking over 600 fans to the home of The O’s, with the goals coming from Danny Parish and a superb solo goal from Jorome Slew. In the second round proper, Maldon were drawn against Football League side, Newport County with the game being shown live on National Television– with the Jammers only beaten by the League Two side, with a goal in stoppage time, with the game finishing 1-0. A record attendance of 1876 was recorded. However, the 2019-20 season will also be remembered for the wrong reasons. After impressive performances on the field, the Jammers found themselves top of the Isthmian Division One North, thirteen points clear with four games in hand, when disaster struck. With a global pandemic declared, as a result of Coronavirus, the league competition was formally abandoned on 26 March 2020, with all results from the season being expunged, and no promotion or relegation taking place to, from, or within the division. The club were denied a chance of promotion and forced to remain in the Division One North for the 2020-21 season. Following the disappointing end to the 2019-20 season, Wayne Brown remained in charge of the club and wholesale changes in the playing squad occurred again, with a number of the previous season’s squad securing transfers to clubs higher up the football pyramid. The Jammers were dealt a big blow in October 2020 when owner and Chairman Ed Garty stood down from his position with immediate effect, ending a challenging ten years at the helm. After a period of uncertainty for the football club, General Manager Ron Dangerfield was confirmed as the new Chairman, with Richard Cowling taking ownership of the football club. Just like the 2019-20 season, the 2020-21 campaign was terminated with promotion and relegation denied for all the sides competing in the Division One North. However, prior to the curtailment the Jammers had reached the Emirates FA Cup First Round for the second successive season, this time losing to Morecambe 1-0 in front of the television cameras. Brown’s side also achieved their longest ever run in the Buildbase FA Trophy, eventually losing to Gloucester City. The Jammers were only able to play in five league games, finishing in third place before the season was curtailed. Heading in to the 2021/22 season, Wayne Brown remained in charge of the First Team and became the club’s longest-serving manager, holding the record for the most games managed in charge of Maldon & Tiptree Football Club. Midway through the 2021/22 season, Brown was appointed as interim Head Coach at Colchester United, with Paul Abrahams taking over as interim Manager. Abrahams steered the Jammers to within touching distance of the play-off semi-finals, however three defeats in the final three games saw the Jammers fall short, in 9th spot resulting in the Jammers remaining in the Isthmian Division One North for another season. At the end of the season, Ron Dangerfield announced his departure as Chairman and left the club to join Charlton Athletic as Secretary. Jerry Carter replaced Dangerfield as Chairman, joining the club from Braintree Town. Roger Stapleton was immediately appointed as the club’s vice-Chair. In May 2022, Wayne Brown departed on a permanent basis and was appointed as Head Coach at Colchester United, having managed 141 games and a win percentage of 68% and arguably the club’s most successful manager to date. After a positive spell as interim Manager, Paul Abrahams was appointed manager on 17 May 2022 following a five year term as Assistant Manager under various Managers.
