James Gannon Good afternoon and a warm welcome to Edgeley Park, especially to John Pemberton, his staff, players, and the officials of Chesterfield FC, that are able to attend today’s game. It is always strange to play a team in back-to-back games, but in some ways it is nice to play such a well-known, strong opponent. It prevents all the potential dangers of under-performing, complacency or difficulties of trying to beat a smaller club in a ‘banana-skin’ tie. I expect today’s contest will be a hard-fought game just like any of our league games, but with all the added tension, drama, and potential excitement of a one-off game that has to be settled on the day. There is also a great prize at stake for the club that wins and goes forward in the competition, in terms of money, confidence, and continued excitement of the FA Cup. I have seen a lot of Chesterfield in the last few weeks and I think they are unfortunate to find themselves placed lower in the league than they would have liked. There are small margins in winning and losing, and all you can do is keep working at the details until the balance is in your favour. In all the games they have lost they have not been found short in terms of physical effort and the right mentality. I am sure that will stand them in good stead as they go forward. We edged last week’s game with a late winner but we can be assured that a win, or any league form, doesn’t always count in the Cup. We will need to be once again on top of our game, giving everything to get into a position of being able to win the tie. On reflection at this stage of the season we are glad to be in a good position after five games. There will be many challenges over the coming weeks and months including fulfilling fixtures as Covid’s impact spreads further into the world of
football. We must all remain vigilant to ensure we can continue to enjoy our work and the game we love. Throughout we have tried to do everything right and professional and this has given us a real foundation and platform for building. I am really pleased we have settled into a good rhythm as a group. We have got the results to build confidence, and that we have been able to continue to add to our way of playing in each game. We know we are a work in progress and we must continue to work really hard at maintaining and improving what we have. We have already built some great memories and brought a lift to all our fans. We must go again today to ensure that we retain that feeling and create another good day in this season’s story. Enjoy the game. JG

S P O N S O R E D B Y:
Hello and welcome to this afternoon’s game. Today we welcome Chesterfield to Edgeley Park for this afternoon’s FA Cup tie. It is typical that we wait years to meet our visitors from over the Pennines then due to the draw we meet twice in a week! Last Saturday in the league I thought it was a very open game which the result could have gone either way. Fortunately, we came away with a victory which sees us top of the league jointly with Torquay. The result could have been in no doubt had the referee not missed one of the two penalties, the first one he was looking straight at. The result sees us record four straight wins, just that lastminute goal in the first match of the season at Torquay has stopped the perfect start.

Have you been watching the streaming of games? It’s not like being at live matches but we will have to see how long it will be before we will be able to enter grounds again. After discussion with the club, we can arrange for a virtual mascot for each home game. If any of our members are interested please contact either Brenda on 07720591316 or myself on 07921810464. We will need a photo and some information about yourself, such as your school, age and favourite player. We look forward to hearing from you all. That’s all for now, stay safe. Ian Butterworth 06

Despite the ravages of the current pandemic, there have been encouraging signs of life from the Club and the County Family recently. We are all suffering a massive communal angst, as County supporters, along with other fans of ‘elite sport’ in the UK, continue to be denied access to their team’s stadium on match days. But, with financial support arranged between the National League and the Government to create the basis for some movement, the long delayed 2020/21 season was finally started. This was assisted in no small measure by the additional agreement to allow clubs to live stream games thus providing a realistic chance of clubs at our level being able to generate real income. This was real progress, and a lifeline for National League and North and South members, many of whom are in dire financial circumstances. There was still no sign of spectators being allowed back at County’s level, but everyone concerned has had a real go at making the best of a bad situation.
County fans had their first sample of the new streaming with the season opener away to Torquay. The quality of the service was good, access was easily achieved, and whilst the host club commentators tended to irritate, it worked… and Torquay generated vital income! County’s home games with FC Halifax and Dover Athletic provided the Club with two opportunities to show what they could do as far as streaming was concerned and with provision for free Season Ticket Holder access working well, it made up substantially for not being inside the stadium watching the game. Fans did play their part though, Help the Hatters doing great work as usual, and supporters saw to it that the Cheadle End for each game was blessed with an array of County flags! Great stuff! Welcome...
Chesterfield FC A week on from last Saturday’s dramatic league fixture, Chesterfield FC again provide the opposition, with today’s game offering a route into the First Round proper of the FA Cup for whoever emerges victorious.
More than a year has passed since The Spireites last visited Edgeley Park, though it’s a familiar route for the Derbyshire club to travel, with today’s game the 98th between these two clubs and the 50th here. Goals from Elliot Osborne and Nyal Bell secured all three points for County last August, ending a six-game winless run against Chesterfield that stretched back to 2004. This weekend presents a break from league action however and, as always, the start of every FA Cup season gives fans the opportunity to dream of progress deep into the competition, of cup upsets, of national headlines and of unforgettable memories. In 1997 Chesterfield - then of Division Two - lived that dream, reaching the semi-final against Premier League Middlesbrough. The events that unfolded that day will forever exist in FA Cup folklore, with The Spireites denied a certain goal which would have given them a 3-1 lead, when the referee failed to spot striker Jon Howard’s shot had crossed the goal line. It was a crucial turning point in the game and though the tie finished all-square at 3-3 Chesterfield were to lose the replay and miss out on being the first-ever club from the third tier to reach the cup final.
08
DID YOU KNOW? In 2013 Ches terfield retired the numb er 14 shirt in tribute to striker Jack Lester, wh o finished his career at the club. He scored 83 goals in 196 games for The Spireites
Those heady days may well seem a long way away now, for the loyal Spireites supporters have certainly suffered more than most in recent seasons, with back-toback relegations blighting 2017 and 2018 and leading to a loss of Football League status for the first time in 97 years.
This season has one notable high thus far, with an emphatic 4-0 victory over otherwise solid-starters Woking two weeks ago. Youth product Liam Rawson bagged a brace that day, with recent signing Alex Kiwomya and long-time scourge of County Tom Denton also on the scoresheet.
The National League has proven a significant challenge too, with their two seasons at this level featuring prolonged battles for survival, with a change in management in both campaigns ultimately securing safety.
Denton, the 6ft 6in frontman, has scored against County for North Ferriby United, FC Halifax Town and Alfreton Town in the past and will be keen to add his current club to that list today.
The Spireites were 19th when last season was brought to an abrupt end, though when the points per game calculation was applied they dropped to 20th - their status in this division secured by a mere 0.08 of a point. Manager John Pemberton was a key contributor to last season’s escape act, taking caretaker charge from January 2nd after the departure of John Sheridan and amassing 17 points from a possible 27. His role was made permanent in September following a change of ownership at the club, with the supporter-run Community Trust now in control.
The vastly experienced, 38-year-old Nathan Tyson partnered Denton in the second half last Saturday. He has over 500 appearances to his credit and more than 100 goals, the majority of which have come at Football League level. Last season he bagged a 23-minute hat-trick for Chesterfield against Ebbsfleet, a feat that no doubt encouraged Pemberton to make Tyson’s loan move from Notts County permanent! With plenty of experience and guile in the Spireites squad there’s a feeling that this season hasn’t got going for the club as yet, with three defeats recorded in their first four games. Perhaps a break from the league and the prospect of £9,375 in prize money might inspire a change in fortunes.

County Heaven Sandbach Hatter writes: Good afternoon, everyone. As you might imagine, the mood over at County Heaven is relatively upbeat following the Hatters’ excellent start to the season (our opening-day defeat aside), so hopefully we can enjoy an equally positive start to our FA Cup campaign this afternoon by beating our hosts from last Saturday to progress to the First Round proper. With Stockport and some of its surrounding areas now plunged into Tier 3 of Boris’ great masterplan (I said it would all end in tiers), everyone is finding it increasingly tough to maintain social interactions with their friends and family... not to mention their fellow County fans. So, while the club’s online content and match-streams have been superb since the season commenced, if you are missing those little chats with the fans you usually sit among at EP, why not join County Heaven as the next best thing?
Hatter in Macc writes: I have Chester fiel-ing that you con-spire-d to defeat me there, Sandy! So, with that, on to the magic of the Cup… albeit a competition that, at least for many ties including this one - will, until further notice, have a touch of the surreal about it, while play remains behind closed doors. Not to say, mind, that the football will be any less entertaining. Far from it, indeed, if last Saturday’s National League encounter at the Technique Stadium with today’s visitors is anything to go by. And how sweet it was as well to set ourselves up for this brief, 10-day break from NL action by going to the top of the table!
After all, the one thing we all have in common is our beloved Hatters, and you are guaranteed a warm welcome once you become a member, so what do you have to lose? Signing up is entirely free, and once you become a fully-fledged ‘Heavener’ you can enjoy all that our site has to offer without any adverts getting in the way.
Meeting the same opponents on consecutive weekends for league and cup contests is nothing new for the Hatters. Most recently, as most of us will still remember, it happened against Salford four years ago this month, when, in the course of seven days at Edgeley Park, we scored twice without reply in the Third Qualifying Round, before resuming our NL North campaign to edge out the ‘Ammies’ here by the odd goal in three. The competitions might have occurred in reverse back then, but a corresponding 2-0 Cup win would do just fine this afternoon!
One of our founder members is my very good chum – and co-contributor – Hatter in Macc, to whom I shall hand you over now. He’s usually good for a pun or two, based on our opponents’ nicknames, but I fear he may struggle today! How about it, Maccy, feeling in-spire-d?!
Our return to SK3 today sees us play the first of three home matches within a week. Here’s hoping that, by virtue of victory on the pitch come 5pm, and a favourable draw for the First Round on Monday evening, just after 7, we can extend that to four within a fortnight! Imagine Radio Jon Keighren
It’s great to have a home draw at this stage of the FA Cup because, even though there are no fans allowed inside the stadium, it gives us the chance to take charge and broadcast the entire game live via our streaming service. Chris Ridgway is back alongside me on the gantry as we face Chesterfield for the second Saturday in a row. Although County were deserved winners when these two sides met last weekend, I’m expecting the Spirerites to have a more varied game plan this time around, possibly asking a few more questions of County’s back line. Chesterfield will have the experienced Scott Boden back this afternoon, after he missed Saturday’s clash at the Technique Stadium serving the final game of a three-match ban, and he will certainly give them another dimension up front and poses a genuine goal threat. Tom Denton, of course, remains a handful, and having scored in six successive games it’s a tribute to County’s back three that they were able to keep him away from the goal last weekend. Chesterfield boss John Pemberton is no stranger to FA Cup shocks – he was caretaker boss of Nottingham Forest when they went to the Etihad and stunned Manchester City 3-0 in the 3rd round back in 2009. He also played in the 1990 FA Cup final, as Crystal Palace lost 1-0 in a replay to Manchester United after a dramatic 3-3 draw in the first game. County’s FA Cup run last season ended early at the hands of York City, which quite frankly did us a favour in terms of allowing our part-time players to stay fresh and compete so brilliantly in the league. But this season, we should be looking to go deeper into the competition and give the EFL teams another reminder that Stockport County are on the way back. It’s early days but already you can see the step up that County have made this season, both in terms of player recruitment and the benefits of full-time training.
Whilst rival fans and commentators are quick to point to the eye-catching additions of players such as John Rooney as a reason for County’s early-season success in rising to the top of the National League table, it’s been heartening to see County’s existing long-serving cohort step up so seamlessly this season. Players such as Sam Minihan, Adam Thomas, Nyal Bell, Ben Hinchliffe, Ash Palmer and Jordan Keane have been with us for several seasons now, but they have all comfortably made that transition from gutsy part-timers to talented, wellrounded, established professionals. Throughout his career, Jim Gannon has often stayed fiercely loyal to a nucleus of players that he has helped to grow, nurture and develop - he did it in 2007/08 and it’s clear to see that many of the Class of 2020 can boast the same hallmarks. Even with more money at his disposal, Jim’s first thought will always be: “Are they any better than what we’ve already got?” Off the pitch, the investment of Mark Stott is having a significant impact on the physical infrastructure of the football club. Last week he proudly showed me around the Cheadle End concourse, which is going to be one of the best fan facilities outside of the Premier League. The training complex at Carrington is way above anything I have seen in more than twenty years of working at County and, when fans are able to return, I am sure you will enjoy seeing the fruits of Mark’s labours. Finally, this week, I’m looking forward to the live stream of our home game with Solihull on Tuesday – my neighbour Jack Prince, the drummer from The Coral, will be joining me in the commentary box! Jack has been studying for his UEFA B licence and is planning to become a professional coach. It promises to be another entertaining evening here at Edgeley Park, both on and off the pitch!

Terrace Talk Edgeley Park will play host to three matches over the course of the next seven days, starting with a Chesterfield outfit that Jim Gannon’s side are all too familiar with having locked horns with the Spireites in the Vanarama National League just a week ago. That 2-1 victory against John Pemberton’s side put County sitting proudly joint top of the League alongside Torquay United, but matters today turn to FA Cup action with the winners looking to book their place in the First Round proper. Last season York City sent Stockport crashing out of the competition at this stage, but 2020-21 marks twenty years since County last equalled their best-ever run in this competition under the stewardship of Andy Kilner. Back then of course County entered the competition in Round Three on account of them being a Division One side and two 1-0 victories against Preston North End and Crewe Alexandra set up a clash with Premier League Tottenham Hotspur at the old White Hart Lane ground. On that day in February 2001, Spurs had been too strong for County and ran out 4-0 winners courtesy of goals from England international Ledley King, two from Simon Davies and an own goal from County legend Mike Flynn, but the experience of coming up against a Tottenham side littered with history and proven internationals was rewarding from both a competitive and financial point of view. County headed to White Hart Lane in this competition in February 2001
It will take a monumental effort for the side to get to those levels again this time around, but as was the case nineteen years ago, two slender wins saw County in that kind of company as similarly three wins this season in this competition would see the Hatters in with a chance to mix it amongst Premier League and Championship clubs in the Third Round.
reflects how quickly fortunes can change in football be it for the best or otherwise. That’s not a slant on Norwich, more testament to how well Luton have done in rebuilding themselves as a club in the EFL.
The FA Cup can throw up all manner of strange results and every year there is a giant killing of some sort. Back in 2013, Luton Town became the first side from the non-league pyramid since 1989 to knock out top-flight opposition in the shape of Norwich City owing to a late Scott Rendell goal at Carrow Road.
Bradford defeating Chelsea, Wigan Athletic against Manchester City, Lincoln City at Burnley and Oldham Athletic visiting Fulham are a few more recent examples of bigger opposition becoming a cropper so if County win today they can be in with a chance to test their mettle against League’s One and Two.
Seven years on and both sides are remarkably on a level playing field in the Championship, which as we know
Who knows it may even become a regular occurrence around these parts once again?
