Brave SES volunteer receives well-deserved award Daniel Shirkie ONE of the Burdekin’s bravest volunteers has called on others to step up and give their time to the SES after having his own hard work rewarded.

Eric Turner, a firefighter, dropped everything and jumped on a plane to fly down to New South Wales and battle the bushfires that had engulfed large parts of the state last year.

Mr Turner was recognised for his efforts at a dinner on Tuesday evening, with the long-term firefighting volunteer and SES member saluted by his fellow members.

“I’ve been doing it for twenty five years with the emergency services and I still love it, I meet a lot of people and you get to give them a hand,” Mr Turner said.

“For me, it helps with my job and everythign else, I work in the mines and I’ve been with the town firies for about 13 years, roughly.”

Mr Turner answered the call and found himself headed to Bateman’s Bay and Nowra, two areas particularly hard hit by the sudden, unprecedented fires.

“We get a text on our phone asking for deployment, then they organise the plan, we spend a night in Brisbane getting briefed and then we headed straight onto Sydney and out onto the job,” Mr Turner said.

“People were coming from all over up here, Mt Isa, Townsville, Magnetic Island.”

Although he was the sole Burdekin representative to make the journey, Mr Turner stood alongside a whole host

of international and Australian firefighters to lend a hand.

“We were backup for the firies down there, they were incredibly tired, it was just a way to give them a bit of a break, so any job that came up, we’d deal with it instead,” Mr Turner said.

“That’s what it’s all about.

“I got permission from work and they gave me a date and I got on the plane.”

The memories of the destruction and damage he saw while working to contain the fires are still with him, but that hasn’t dampened his enthusiasm for helping out.

“It was hard, you see a lot of people’s faces and you see a lot of country animals dead and burnt, it’s relaly hard to see everything like that,” Mr Turner said.

I still sometimes think about it, but I got on with the job.

Everyone was tired, they just needed us to give them a hand and that’s what we did.

“It’s nice to show off the good work the SES does, I enjoy the work, I love it.”

SES uses drone to find missing man Daniel Shirkie AN 84-year-old man who was reported missing on Sunday has been found thanks to the help of an aerial drone.

Approximately 34 searchers conducted a five hour search throughout the surrounding region after Fredrick Cockfield was reported missing from Brandon.

According to SES Regional Manager Daryl Camp, the man was found thanks to the assistance of a Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) unmanned drone.

“In these cases, with grass and canefields, the drones make it very easy to see large areas and home in on those warm spots, where we were able to find the gentleman,” Mr Camp said.

“He was found in a very swampy grass area, where the grass was about 1.2 to 1.5

Mr Camp said the quick thinking response of the Burdekin SES group was particularly helpful and put a spotlight on the co-operation the regional groups make possible.

“Burdekin knew they’d need a lot of people to aid in the search and they put that request in early, we were able to back them up with people from Townsville and get the RPAs down there to assist as well.”

Fashions on the Field Marina Trajkovich THE Home Hill Race Club was awash with colour this week, as fashionable ladies and gentlemen from across the region donned their millinery and frocks for the Burdekin Growers Race Day. The Race Day is one of the biggest events on the Burdekin social calendar and the Fashions on the Field, one of its main highlights.

Fashions on the Field guest judge Kya Faust, the Townsville style guru and interior designer behind Vanilla Design says she was impressed with the high standard of all who entered the competition and attended the event.

“It was probably one of the best race days I’ve been to. I think Burdekin people are very fashion forward, everyone I saw put a lot of effort into what they were wearing,” says Kya.

“A lot of people put a bit of a spin on I suppose that classic look when you think about going to the races which I really liked,” she says.

Local lady Louisa Daley wowed the crowd in the millinery section with her stunning head piece from Kylie Marie Creations and Karly Rubins from Townsville took the prize for runner up.

Nathan Toll was the winner of the Stylish Gentleman competition and Luke Mitchell from Mackay was runner up in the men’s category.

Kya says that when it came to judging the anticipated Contemporary and Classic Lady competitions, she looked for cohesiveness within the outfit and that something extra.

“I think I look at overall what the person has put together and then I’ll look at what the category is. For contemporary woman I’ll look at someone

who is wearing something quite fresh with a bit of a modern feel to it but for classic I’m always looking for that traditional races look,” she says.

Ureisha Hughes from Bogie took out the Contemporary Lady title in a stunning peach floral outfit with Hayley Ackerman as runner up in a stunning red, brown and cream number.

“The Contemporary Lady winner was a stand out for me.

She was wearing an outfit that was still traditional in approach but she paired that with a really modern metal headpiece and the entire outfit was in the same tones,” says Kya. Jasmin Delle Baite won the Classic Lady section in a floral baby blue outfit and Blaise Heron was runner up.

Ayr’s Surf Woman wraps up a year of fundraising Marina Trajkovich THE Ayr Surf Life Saving Club Surf Woman of the Year entrant, Emma Smith, swapped the sand for the stage this week as she enjoyed the final Surf Woman awards on the Gold Coast.

Emma describes her elation as dressed in an emerald green evening gown, she took to the stage for the event, filled with pride amongst the other Surf Woman entrants from clubs across Queensland.

The young lifesaver from Dublin was shocked and pleased at the news that the Ayr Life Saving Club had won runner up for the highest fundraiser, totalling $38,000 in donated funds for the club.

“I actually cried and was quite emotional. I didn’t expect it to be that high, to be honest,” says Emma of the fundraising figure.

“I didn’t even know how much we’d raised because they wanted it to be a surprise.

We were the second-highest fundraisers between the 18

girls,” she says.

The $38,000 has been built over a year of fundraising efforts, from a pageant nights at Alva Beach to the club’s annual trivia nights and golf days.

“The club gets all of that money back; it’ll also go into the Nippers, so if we need new boards, new equipment for patrols, any equipment for the kids and training. We’ll have our big annual meeting in June to see where that money goes,” says Emma.

The Surf Woman of the Year competition is an annual event from Surf Life Saving Queensland, where clubs from different regions nominate a ‘surf woman,’ to represent their club, culminating in a final competition held on the Gold Coast.

Together, the surf women raised $280,000 for life saving clubs around Queensland.

“We did all get our hair and makeup done and I had to do an interview with the judges who were going to decide the winner based on our portfolios.

I was just enjoying the whole

process,” says Emma of the competition.

The young Irishwoman, who had been studying social work in Dublin before taking time off to travel throughout Australia, had found herself living in the Burdekin, developing a fast fondness for the tight knit community.

A professional swimmer back home, she began teaching at the Burdekin Swim School before becoming a member of the Surf Life Saving Club.

“I guess I just never left Ayr. I did get to travel a little bit of Australia but ended up just getting stuck here, to be honest. It’s a pretty cool little community and town. I just loved it.

“I joined the club because I guess I wanted that sense of being Australian, being a lifeguard,” she says.

“It’s such an honour to be nominated especially since I’m not from here. It really is outstanding, the support from everyone who could make it and throughout the year.”

Queensland has been struck by power outages following a generator turbine fire at the Callide C Power Station near Biloela.

At around 1.45pm on Tuesday, a fire occurred in one of the station’s turbine halls, resulting in multiple emergency crews responding to the incident.

No injuries were reported and teams from Ergon and Energex were put into action to resolve the outages.

Around 6,000 residents in North Queensland were impacted by the outages, while a further 8,000 in the Whitsundays lost power.

Home Hill business leader joins chorus calling for second bridge solution Daniel Shirkie HOME Hill Chamber of Commerce president David Jackson has added his voice to a growing chorus calling for all levels of government to act on a second bridge between Ayr and Home Hill.

An upcoming overnight bridge closure in order to repair sloping cord braces, and the possibility of more such closures in the future, has raised concerns over the utility of the existing structure once again.

Mr Jackson says the problem has existed for a long time, and a lack of political will has caused possible solutions to stagnate.

“Now that there’s a bridge closure coming, it will raise the issue more,” Mr Jackson said.

“They’re only doing one of those cords for now, there’s around forty, so by the time they get done with this one as a trial run and decide how they’re going to do the rest, there’ll be a lot more closures.

“It’s going to create problems.”

Mr Jackson said bridge closures between Ayr and Home Hill had become a frequent occurrence, with sometimes up to ten temporary

“That bridge was never built for current day traffic and transport; it was built to accommodate traffic in the 40s and 50s when it was planned and took ten years to build,” Mr Jackson said.

“It wasn’t built for the wide and high loads that we have these days that make a mess of the traffic.”

While the impacts have been limited to those incidental closures until now, Mr Jackson says residents will be affected by more frequent, and longer closures for repairs.

“These days, we’ve lost a lot of shops; it’ll be the same in Ayr,” Mr Jackson said.

“People over there won’t be able to get home, there’ll be a lot of people who will be stuck, there’ll be people who play sports who’ll have to cancel and make other arrangements.

“The whole idea of the bridge is to be a communication point between the two towns; you take that bridge away and it’s going to affect a lot of people.”

Mr Jackson says the only effective answer to the current woes is for a second structure to be built alongside the

existing bridge, allowing for passage two ways.

“It won’t make a difference to the Burdekin if they were to build a new bridge up at Clare or further.

“They talk about building out there because it’s higher and would be above flood level,” Mr Jackson said.

“But that’s not going to help us; a farmer with a wide-load isn’t going to drive all the way up there when he can just duck across here.

“If we had bridges going both ways, there would still be closures and you would need extra lanes to accommodate those vehicles.”

Mr Jackson believes it’s a lack of political will to act that’s stymied a second bridge from coming to fruition, saying that he thinks politicians have been reluctant to commit to a plan that will place roads through existing farms and farming land.

“If they’d build a bridge beside this one, take the road off, with the railway line and head towards the speedway on the other side of Brandon, it’d be all over with,” Mr Jackson said.

THE $1000 grand prize and 2021 Quack Cup up for grabs in the Norm Perry Memorial Duck Race were claimed by first-time entrant Jason Zunker Mr Zunker won the prize after entering for his first year, after purchasing a duck directly from Rotary president Mick Blakey.

After claiming the top honours in the 2021 return of the charitable event, Mr Zunker joked that the cash prize would

likely go towards ‘paying a few bills’.

While Mr Zunker was the overall winner, the whole event was hailed as a success by Rotary, with a record number of ducks sold, and a groundswell of community participation on the day, according to Mr Blakey.

“It was incredible, we actually sold a record number of ducks and it all went off really well, I can’t thank our sponsors enough,” Mr Blakey said.

“Our members did an incredible job, all the work that went into it was

farmers and property owners upset because it’ll take away parts of their farms.”

“No political party wants to make a decision that’s going to upset so many farmers and lose their vote.”

But he says it’s time for all levels of government to set aside politics and put a plan into motion or risk further decades of inaction.

“All levels of government have to work together to do it, I won’t see it in my lifetime, I don’t think I’m going to live until 120 to see it. They have to start planning today.”

Queensland’s Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Mark Bailey, when approached for comment about the possibility of a two-bridge solution said the government was committed to listening to community feedback surrounding the bridge during the upgrades.

“The $96.6 million Burdekin River Bridge works project, part of the Palaszczuk Labor Government’s record $17.8 billion spend on roads and transport across regional Queensland, will preserve the integrity of an important bridge which provides a critical link between Ayr and Home Hill,” Mr Bailey said.

Burdekin MP Dale Last said it was time to have a ‘mature and considered’ conversation about the situation.

“Any plans to upgrade road infrastructure in the Burdekin needs to take into account the business community, the needs of residents and road users,” Mr Last said.

“It is vitally important that any plans to relocate the road corridor in the North takes into consideration the Burdekin’s strong reliance on primary producers and the impact on valuable farming land along that corridor.”

“I think the time has come to have a mature and considered conversation around a second bridge across the Burdekin River because clearly we cannot sustain the increasing number of bridge closures and volume of traffic travelling through the communities of Home Hill, Ayr and Brandon.”

Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin was approached for comment, but had not responded in time for publication.

Marina Trajkovich A NEW Australian agave spirit distillery is coming to the Whitsundays, set to be the largest producer of its kind and bringing a new and unique spirit to the country.

Hundreds of thousands of Ayr propagated agave plants are currently growing at the Eden Lassie farm, just south of Bowen, where growers and spirit company Top Shelf International are patiently waiting for the plant’s cultivation.

Grower and agronomist Chris Monsour says the project will be an exciting step towards creating a new and uniquely Australian agave product that will draw even more visitors to the beautiful Whitsundays.

He says that while agave is typically used to create Mexican tequila, Top Shelf’s Agave Spirit will be uniquely Australian with room to experiment with the distilling process.

“Top shelf’s vision is to have a uniquely Australian version of the agave spirit without trying to mimic what they have in Mexico. There’s a lot of history there, and a lot of similarities, but the way that we’re growing it is quite different to what they do,” says Chris.

“In Mexico, there are guidelines as to how growers create the product. It’s very regulated to protect that tequila

brand. This is our unique Australian take on the tequila industry,” says Chris.

He says that Agave is well suited to the Burdekin and Whitsundays region and that nothing to this scale has been attempted in Australia before.

“This is by far the largest commercial planting of agave in Australia. By the time we’ve finished, we’ll be in the top 20 producers in the world and have a million plants.

“In Mexico, it’s basically the same latitude as we are in Bowen and the Burdekin except in the Northern Hemisphere. It’s a crop that can grow on very marginal soil and doesn’t need a lot of rain, so it suits our tropical dry season environment as well.”

The idea to grow agave at the Eden Lassie farm started in Ayr at the Kalamia Mill when a man from Aus Agave began to experiment with agave plants he had brought from Mexico.

The original plan pitched in 2010 explored the potential of agave as an additional alternative to sugar cane in the Burdekin, which was less reliant on specific harvesting seasons and top quality soil.

Top Shelf International then saw the potential for a distillery, and Prospect Agriculture assisted in sourcing the Whitsunday location for the million new agave plants.

“After four years, we’ll be able to start harvesting and distilling,” says Chris.

It’s not tequila, but a new Australian agave spirit is set to become a booming new local industry and taste for the North.

“We’re also working with on creating a solar farm to make sure that we’re a hundred per cent carbon neutral.

We’re really working on that sustainability aspect as well,” he says.

Plans for the future distillery and visitor centre have been recently released by the liquor company showing a luxe

viewing platform and tasting area overlooking the agave fields.

“I think it will have a big impact. There’s not a lot of land-based tourism in this part of the world. The Whitsundays and Bowen will be recognised as the location of this unique farm and distillery.”

Anniversary celebration shows Men’s Shed is built to last Daniel Shirkie THE Burdekin Men’s Shed is on the cusp of celebrating ten strong years of advocacy and mateship.

The association will mark a decade on from their founding on Friday, May 29, almost exactly ten years on from the day when a group of likeminded men met at Bevan List’s property to discuss the benefits of such a group in 2011.

LIfe member and inaugural president Charles Ford says the very first talks first began in November of 2010, but the idea took some time to come to fruition.

“The average person, when you say ‘a men’s shed’, they conjure up an image of a woodworking shop,” Mr Ford said.

“We have a very strong woodworking club here, and I was a member, so when they said a men’s shed, that’s what I thought it was going to be.

“So I went along to try and put a stop to it, because we already had a good club for that.”

proposed facility would aim first and foremost to improve men’s health outcomes rather than offer shop tips, they decided to form a steering committee to pursue the concept.

“We found out that the entire concept was built around addressing men’s health issues, and if the therapy that helps a person feel better involves a little bit of woodwork, so be it,” Mr Ford said.

That giving attitude, and a holistic approach to health, have been a mainstay for the association for its entire existence, as Ford explains.

“When you look at men’s health, the sheds play a big role in helping with that,” Mr Ford said.

“We’re not therapists or anything like that, but we’re there and if someone wants to come along and talk, we’re there for them.

“If you’ve got an ailment, there’s someone worse off than you, and if you’re about to have an operation, there’s someone who’s already had it too.”

That attitude, and the well equipped workshops and other outlets on offer at the Men’s Shed’s home at 155 Young Street have kept the shed in

good stead.

The buildings there, once the abandoned and derelict home of the Ayr Scouts, have been painstakingly renovated by the association and now stand renewed, a point of pride for the hard working member’s.

“People will hear my name quite a bit, but it’s always been about the members,” Mr Ford said.

“They’ve all worked so very hard on this over the years.

“We came in here and the members worked together to repair everything, and now ten years later, here we are.

“I think we have one of

the best regional sheds in Queensland because of the members.”

The shed was even recognised as such, taking home a runner up prize in the 2017 Community Group of the Year awards after reaching the finals.

Current president Rob Ritchie says it’s as much a communal bond as a mission statement, and one that’s always growing.

“Just the other day, we had a bloke come in working with metal, who needed a bit of welding done, but he’s no good at it, so I gave him a hand with it,” Mr Ritchie said.

“But at the same time, he’s always the first bloke with his hand up to help out with things he can help with.

Shitbox Rally to fund cancer fight Daniel Shirkie ONE former Burdekin resident is preparing to tackle an 8800km rally in honour of his late father.

Brandon Mooney, the son of avid cyclist Michael Mooney, unfortunately lost his father to melanoma in 2019 and will get behind the wheel for an upcoming ‘Shitbox Rally’ in order to raise funds for cancer research.

Michael was an avid cyclist

during his time spent living in Ayr and often raised funds himself for cancer research before his passing.

“After we lost my dad in early 2019 we knew we had to do something to keep his legacy of raising funds going,” Brandon said.

Now a radiographer at Townsville University Hospital, Brandon and co-driver Luke first became familiar with the concept of the Shitbox Rally in 2016 while studying in Mackay.

Both men signed up to compete in an event in 2020 after Michael’s passing, but had to postpone their fundraising attempt due to COVID. Both men will bundle into a 1997 VS Holden Commodore Ute, affectionately dubbed ‘Gertrude’ for the trek after picking it up for $500 with the aims of entering the rally one day.

The journey will take them from the Gold Coast to Alice Springs and will cover around

3000km of unsealed roads alongside 250 other teams also making the journey in support of cancer research.

“We haven’t really done anything like this before,” Brandon said.

“We’ll have to see how Gertrude goes. We’ve done pretty much everything we can with her to get her ready, hopefully she holds out and she can turn around at the end of it all and get us home from Alice Springs.”

The fundraising efforts so far, which have included a memorial bike ride, have already raised $12,500 towards the Cancer Council’s goals, something Brandon is especially appreciative of.

“It’s been amazing to see the support we’ve got so far, most of our donations come from friends, a lot of it’s come along just from the goodwill of people,” Brandon said.

“We’ve been getting the message out through social

Mr Ford says that younger members, in particular, are always wanted, but every man is welcome to sign on as a member and become part of a rich legacy of community spirit.

“This anniversary really is about acknowledging the financial members that we’ve had and we’re acknowledging the foundation members, there’s only about sixteen of that group left,” Mr Ford said.

“We’re honouring them, and everyone who’s sat on the committee and the steering committee that first started all of this, our catering staff as well.

Both Brandon and Luke are already well versed in helping fight cancer through their work at Townsville Hospital, but it’s especially poignant for Brandon to see the amount of support coming from the Burdekin for cancer research.

“We’re really thankful, it’s been amazing to see just how many people contributed, most of our donations come from the generosity of the people,” Brandon said.

“We do our bit everyday, we’re always scanning cancer patients and stuff like that, but the research is really important.

“The main goal is to hopefully one day help find a cure, we get to be a part of that journey everyone’s going through and hopefully contribute in some small way to the future of cancer research.

“Every dollar helps, and we’re really grateful to everyone who digs deep and helps us raise more.”

DENTIST Nathan Barrett from Townsville didn’t expect to get hooked on gardening when he first moved to the Burdekin five years ago, but now, between working at the Ayr Hospital, it’s a huge part of his life.

The 27-year-old had made the regional switch after studying dentistry in Cairns, where he met fellow dentist and Ayr girl, Sian Blakey, before the pair decided to settle in Ayr. Now, Nathan can’t imagine living anywhere else and is

“After Summer, the sun moved, and everything just died, and it was the saddest veggie patch in the world,” he says.

“I started doing my own research and then discovered Landcare. When you join, you get a free tree, so I became a member and just kind of

Nathan’s come a long way since his failed vegetable patch and is now able to give advice of his own as the VicePresident of the group.

“It’s really good, and I do feel like I do a lot for this community through this club in a way that’s completely different to dentistry. We’re revegetating the region and are looking after its flora and fauna,” he says.

“It’s a really important thing to look after the environment but also for my own physical and mental health.

“Gardening for anybody is really getting back to the elements, and you’re breathing fresh air. It’s just fantastic.

Art Society work on display for Sweet Days Hot Nights Marina Trajkovich

THe Burdekin Art Society has created a pop-up art exhibition on Queen Street in the lead up to the Burdekin’s Sweet Days Hot Nights Festival from the 27th to the 29th of May. Vice President of the Burdekin Art Society, June Pola, says that the pop-up exhibition has been an exciting opportunity for members of the club to display their work and share

in the event’s festivities.

“We did have a lot of paintings. We thought we’d do something with the Sweet Days Hot Nights festival and put on a pop-up display,” says June.

“It’s been a bit of work, but it’s been so worth it. It’s a great chance to put out their work and show it,” she says.

The society has created a window display for the Sweet Days Hot Nights Window display competition to accompany the exhibition

and hopes that both locals and visitors to the region will pay a visit to see the work of their members.

They’ll also be setting up a stall at the Sweet Days Hot Nights Festival’s Australian Cane Cutting Championship, where visitors can peruse their art or buy one of their cane fire paintings.

“We do have a lot of local scenes on display. We’re also working with one of our members Tamika Savorgnan who will be selling her cane

“It’s really nice to be able to put them out. Because of Covid, we haven’t been able to put much of our work on display.

“We are hoping to sell some of the work, but we do it just because we love to paint.

We’re not trying to make a fortune from them. It’s just a hobby that people can enjoy,” she says.

TAYLAH Fitzgibbon and her boyfriend Baxter Beddoes are up and coming voices in Townsville’s live entertainment scene, heading south soon for the Burdekin’s Sweet Days Hot Nights Festival this week.

Born into a musical family, 21-year-old Taylah says she’s always had a love of singing that’s translated in her professional life, performing live gigs in venues throughout Townsville and as a singing teacher.

“I did grow up performing.

I’ve been taking professional singing lessons since I was nine and started teaching when I was seventeen so it’s pretty much all I do!” says Taylah.

“My boyfriend who is now my partner actually encouraged me to start

gigging and gave me the kick up the butt to get started.

He’s now come on board and performs with me as a duet.”

“We are looking at doing some songwriting and going down that avenue, I’d love to get a song recorded in the next year or so,” she says.

The pair have been singing together for the last year, performing in gigs around Townsville.

“It’s great for him to be there, he has a lovely low voice that really compliments mine. We’ve got a really wide range of the songs we’re able to do and he’s really great at singing things like Johnny Cash and George Ezra.

“I do love slow ballads and musical theatre, wild things like that. But we do sing a lot of seventies and eighties music, lighthearted stuff that everyone can sing along to and have a boogie and a

dance,” says Taylah.

“I’m just looking forward to being a part of that atmosphere. I’ve heard some really good things about it and people can just expect to have a good time and hear some of their favourite songs.”

Taylah and Baxter will be performing at the Sweet Days Hot Nights Festival on Friday the 29th of May, as part of the Cultural Festival.

Besides watching their duet live on stage, attendees can enjoy belly dancing spectacles, traditional dances from the Bindal Dancers of Townsville, a chainsaw artist and a Chinese dragon whilst feasting on culinary delights from different cultures.

Makeup Mastery Rochelle Spotswood, a highly successful makeup artist has returned home to the Burdekin for her Makeup Masterclass.

Marina Trajkovich ESTEEMED makeup artist Rochelle Spotswood returned to the Burdekin for the Burdekin Growers Race Day between painting the faces of cover stars and celebrities in Sydney to share her professional skills with other women.

Her first Makeup Masterclass in Ayr, held at Poplins Hall, was an insightful look into the world of beauty and skincare, designed to give the tools and knowledge locals need to accentuate their existing beauty and create a fantastic makeup look.

Rochelle says that the Masterclass was a huge success, with many women leaving with new skills and a greater understanding of

makeup, ready to put new techniques to action in time for race day.

“It was so lovely to see so many familiar faces in the crowd and also a few new,” says Rochelle.

“It was such an informative night, talking all things skincare and how to achieve that natural glow from within the skin, stripping away the full glam and just enhancing everyone’s natural beauty with strategic placement of products!

“My main goal was to inspire and educate.

Everyone who attended hopefully walked away with a few extra tips and tricks tailored to their skin on how to create this,” she says.

Rochelle says she’s grateful to the event planning team at Dominique’s for bringing her

Ayr golfers win big at Qld Womens Country Week

Sandra Wight I’M not sure my words can actually do this past week justice.

This is definitely an annual golfing experience not to be missed. Especially, when you are part of a club that is so inclusive, and you can go away and represent your home club with such pride and enthusiasm.

We may only be a small club compared to many, but the 12 of us who headed to Bribie Island made memories that are unforgettable both on and off the fairways.

We shared many golfing mishaps, had a few golfing highlights, but it was the banter over a cold beverage that made for constant laughter which is so good for the soul.

Where do I begin? After an amazing Mothers day luncheon on the Sunday at Sandstone Point Hotel, we all prepared for the next 3 days of golfing.

Over 300 lady golfers flocked to Bribie Island for Country Week, to play at both Bribie Island Golf Course and Caboolture Golf Course.

First day was the Foursomes. Six groups of Ayr Ladies were vying for the title. Team captain, Rhonda O’Brien organised some inhouse prizes. The cream certainly rose to the top of

the paired groups on this day. Wendy Baker and Pat Lawson coming out on top with a nice 77 nett. Lets just say – the other 5 teams didn’t quite manage to come close to this score. Wendy and Pat were presented with their engraved water bottles at the team barbecue organised and prepared by masterchef and team manageress Noni Warcon.

Tuesday was round 1 of the singles championship.

Division 1 & 2 were stroke play whilst Division 3 & 4 played Stableford points (phew!) The Caboolture course for us Div 3&4 players proved quite challenging, especially for those who played in the morning on the slippery fairways. One lady however, had a tremendous round with 37 Stableford points. Kerry Mann hit them long and straight and putted like a champ.

Div 1 & 2 played their stroke event at Bribie Island and again Pat Lawson was the leader in our club after Round 1 with an 81 nett, which indicates exactly how difficult the conditions were for everyone as this score was right up the top in her respective division.

Wednesday rolled around and let’s just say the early morning storm made for quite a few withdrawals to the 2nd round at Bribie. But

for those who did take the chance and headed out, it ended up being very pleasant and no rain was encountered during play. However, for the afternoon tee off groups, they weren’t quite so lucky.

Bribie Island group managed to play approximately 2/3 of the scheduled 18 holes, but at the Caboolture course play was abandoned after 1 hole due to close-by lightning and imminent storms.

After lunch at the Bribie Surf Club it was time to prepare for the Gala Dinner and presentation to winners.

Due to Wednesdays play being abandoned only Tuesdays scores could be taken into account.

After an amazing meal catered by Bribie RSL, presentations began. Ayr Club didn’t disappoint, with two ladies being called to the stage.

Congratulations to the 2021 Division 3 Runner Up Kerry Mann and Division 2 - 18 Hole Gross Round 1 winner Pat Lawson. After lots of photos and celebratory drinks we all danced the night away.

It was announced during the night that next years Country Week would be in Cairns which all of us Northerners were pleased to hear and already have started looking into accommodation.

The troops evacuated to the coast before capture by the Germans, who transported Barnett to the POW camp, where he lived until release in 1944.

At the time, the Canadian YMCA were delivering all prisoners of war log books, to document their experiences and keep themselves occupied at the camps.

“He never said anything about any of that. I think the poetry was more what he had on his mind,” says David.

“It would’ve been horrific and I think this is how he survived, this Jeanette. I would love to know who she was. All he was thinking about was Jeanette,” he says.

The diary is still on display at the Ayr ANZAC Memorial Club. David says he’s proud that he’s been able to share the piece of history with locals in the region and visitors to the club.

Interschool Drama Festival to showcase theatrical talents Daniel Shirkie

THE annual Interschool Drama Festival is set to light up the stage once again this year, with all four schools involved committing to another show The night of light-hearted entertainment promises a raft of good natured fun with Home Hill State High School, Ayr State High School, Burdekin Catholic High School and Burdekin Christian College.

Wendy Viero, one of the organisers at Home Hill State High School who’ll be helping the competition make it’s return after a year’s absence, says all four schools will have big roles to play.

“It’s not a competition, what it is for the schools is really a showcase for

the students from all four schools,” Mrs Viero said.

“We organise the drama festival every year and we host it, but the other schools are all a very big part of it.”

Each school contributes a one-act play and performs it on the night, with the Burdekin Theatre stage the platform for the performances.

But unlike other stage production festivals and school-based programs, the Burdekin’s version of the drama festival also allows students who want to get to work backstage a chance to learn on the job.

“It’s very important for the students, because the children get to use all the sound and lighting gear as well,” Mrs Viero said.

“They actually get to be a

part of the production side of things, they’re not just going out there and acting.

It’s a really helpful bit of hands-on experience for all the schools.

It can be very difficult to get that sort of experience with the production side of things, they don’t get that elsewhere.”

Some schools even go as far as to script their own original

productions.

“Ayr State High School, usually even devise their own one-act play and have a student write it, which is good too,” Mrs Viero said.

“It’s a really helpful bit of hands-on experience for all the schools, it’s very beneficial for them in terms of their development.

It can be very difficult to get that sort of experience with the production side of things, they don’t get that elsewhere.”

The entertainment will be the standard, good humored fair that has graced the stage in previous iterations of the festival according to Ms Viero.

“They’re usually very lighthearted, they’re one long so they only go for about a half an hour,” Ms Viero said.

“We haven’t heard back from the other schools about

what they’re covering, but we’ll be doing an adaptation of the Wizard of Oz in our thirty minutes, it’s a bit more comedic and we try to keep to that sort of atmosphere.”

The festival, which is now it’s 46th year, will be held on June 10.

“It is on a Thursday night this year, which isn’t the usual, but COVID last year pushed a lot of things back into this year, so the theatre’s been fully booked out and we had to make do,” Mrs Viero said.

STUDENTS from the Burdekin region are among those who’ve celebrated National Boarders Week at their second home, Townsville Grammar School.

Over 130 boarders participated in the annual Boarders’ Run on Thursday, May 20 to mark the occasion, with the Burdekin’s Townsville-based boarders getting amongst the action.

Every boarding student across the country is encouraged to run a one kilometre distance during the event, with the combined distance of every boarding student’s run matching the

circumference of Australia.

One student, Ben Davies, who is in year 12, said boarding at Townsville Grammar had changed his life.

“Being a Townsville Grammar boarder has allowed me the opportunity to make a wide range of friends all the way from South Korea to St George,” Mr Davies said.

“I have made friendships for life. Also, the food isn’t bad either!”

Another, Mackenzie Hatch, was quick to celebrate the achievements she’d been driven to achieve thanks to her stay away from home.

“Boarding school has

enabled me to become more independent and develop important life skills,” Ms Hatch said.

“My experience being a boarder has encouraged me to push myself, whether that be in academics or sporting.”

“The Boarders Run is a fun way to celebrate Boarding Week, especially knowing that boarders throughout Australia are doing the same thing.”

Townsville Grammar School is just one of 190 schools across the country that participate in a boarding schools program, with over 20,000 students recognised as boarding students at present.

ST FRANCIS STUDENT WINS QLD NAIDOC COLOURING AWARD Marina Trajkovich A YOUNG St Francis Primary School student has this week been awarded a 2020 NAIDOC Week Medal of Excellence, one of 25 students in Queensland to win the award for her outstanding colouring skills against thousands of entrants around Australia.

The competition invited students across the country from prep to year six to submit their creations, be it a coloured in poster for the younger grades or a short story to be sent to Sydney and judged by a selection of Indigenous elders and representatives.

Seven-year-old Arden Mitchell from St Francis entered the competition whilst she was in grade one last year and has recently been awarded the medal of excellence for her skills.

Arden’s mother, Kady Brandon, says that she’s incredibly proud of her daughter and pleased with the initiative that educates school students about aspects of indigenous culture.

REPRESENTATIVES from AgForce and a panel of Sugarcane industry experts have met with local producers during a conference in Brandon to discuss what awaits in the sugarcane industry’s future.

AgForce’s Michael Kern was on hand as one of those who spoke about the challenges and opportunities that producers and industry leaders will face in the coming years.

“We were very happy with the turnout, this is the third of the forums we’ve run, we’d previously run them in Mackay and Ingham,” Mr Kern said.

“We got about 51 people last night in Brandon, so we’re very happy, obviously you always want more, but people are very busy at the moment planting and picking their other crops or taking a quick holiday before the season gets going proper.”

Mr Kern said it was imperative to keep a connection between local producers and the wider industry and that ongoing communication would be key for the industry’s future.

“We saw these forums as an opportunity to get people to come together and start those conversations,” Mr Kern said.

“It’s a really good opportunity for all those people to throw the ideas out there, discuss the challenges that are out there and learn about the opportunities.

“I’m hoping the take-away for everyone that was there is that we need to keep these conversations going.”

• As expected, ethanol parity has slightly fallen across the week as new crop ethanol increases the supply. However, the parity still firmly supports the market with the latest estimates sitting at approximately 16.09 USc/lb ICE 11 equivalent.

• The government of India spontaneously announced a reduction of their export subsidy for the current season from IND (Indian rupee) 6000 down to IND 4000 per metric tonne (mt) - a reduction of about USD $27/mt.

The revision appears to be symbolic only as the majority of the 6 million metric tonne quota has already been exported with only 300k mt remaining, however it could be an indication for next year’s export policy.

QSL introduces improved payment process QSL

QSL Market Update

Payment paperwork has been streamlined and growers also be able to access key payment information and notifications via the QSL App. GST arrangements have also been simplified, with QSL applying GST to QSL transactions and issuing an RCTI/Tax Invoice for payments made from 1 July 2021. This will enable growers to enter their QSL sugar income, expenses and GST information into their bookwork just like any other RCTI, and distribute their GST more evenly through the year.

WHEN THE CHANGES APPLY Existing statement and GST arrangements will continue to apply to all payments made in the current financial year. The change to the new statement format will align with the GST change on 1 July 2021, making it easy for growers to identify when the new GST arrangements come into effect and which payments it applies to. From 1 July 2021: 1. QSL will apply 10% GST to its sugar payments in Wilmar milling districts 2. QSL will issue RCTI/Tax Invoices featuring a Tax Summary section noting expenses, revenue and GST

3. T h ese amounts can be treated just like any other RCTI – simplifying bookwork Note: QSL Growers will still need to record the income, expenses and applicable GST from their Wilmar RCTI and tax invoice.

• Without any important data this week, markets remain directionless as they attempt to digest the importance of the previous week’s inflation reports. Risk sentiment (see our Jargon Buster) appeared to rebound slightly in the latter half of the week as investors decided the US Federal Reserve are still a long way off taking action and moving interest rates.

• Cryptocurrencies made headlines throughout the week as Elon Musk reported Tesla would not be using bitcoin as a payment method and the Chinese government announced the banking and payment industry were not to conduct business through cryptocurrencies. The highly unpredictable asset class was even more volatile than usual, moving up to 30% in a day. Investors are yet to form a collective opinion on how cryptocurrencies will affect other global markets.

Palm Creek Folk Festival line up announced Marina Trajkovich THE iconic Palm Creek Folk Festival is returning this June with an exciting new lineup of performances decked out across three stages within the Foots Hill campsite.

The coordinator of the festival, Madonna Davies, says that the team of volunteers have been working hard to put on the threeday event, which will be an exciting display of both local and nationally recognised artists.

“Music functions as a global language. Music festivals are not just megaevents. They are a vehicle for forming communities,” says Madonna.

“Our volunteers are a pivotal part of the mix and show that there is a strong sense of ownership and dedication to the festival,” she says.

Madonna is excited to be presenting the incredibly diverse and talent-filled lineup that will be playing throughout the festival.

“The genres are varied from folk to indie, rock and blues, a bit of jazz and gypsy, soul, roots and reggae.

“There will be over 20 local bands, including local favourites returning, Late November and Tasha Zappala. Locals Dan Baker and the Bookmakers, 33 1/3, Meraki, Colie, Deep Sea Creature, Don’t Wake

She says that heralding from the Southern states will be Jesse Morris and the Shakedown, Vaudeville Smash, Salt and Steel, JC and the Tree, BluGuru, Tullara as well as Tessa Divine from Cairns.

She says that between the three stages and workshop locations, there will always be live music to listen to as well as entertainment for the kids.

“The Mountain Stage will be playing music all weekend from Friday morning to Sunday afternoon.

“The Jam Tin will feature a bunch of different workshops during the day followed by

On Sunday the club premiere event, the Sam Oats Memorial open fours was contested by teams from Ingham to Bowen, with some top shelf bowls played.

The Burdekin Skips sponsored event, was won by the awesome

foursome from Alligator Creek, consisting of Gary Cooper, Tom Hendy, Greg Duncan and Brian Davies. Second place went to the Jubilee juggernaut skipped by D Johnson. Third place went to the Bowen bombers skipped by S Hornbuckle. Round wins were taken out by Simon Griggs happy contingent, Wayne Erikson’s gogo gadget band of brothers, and Alton Rowe’s grape crushers.

The Brandon club survives on the effort put in by volunteers. At a recent meeting, Len Feeney was awarded life membership of the club as a result of his extensive service. He proved once again that he is a worthy recipient of this award by putting in a full day of work helping to make the Sam Oats Memorial Day a success.

On Sunday, the B Singles final will be contested between Damian Morello and Leo Kenny.

The Dunn Cup team has been selected – Gary Pearce, Steve Nellestein, Simon Griggs, Peter Jorgensen and Ray Paneccasio.

They will contest this event in Ingham next month.

Matches will be on again on Friday night with names in by 6:00pm for a 6:30pm start and on Sunday with names in by 1:00pm for a 1:30pm start.

THE past week saw the Under 16 Burdekin Wildcats side complete their end of season break up at the newly renovated Wildcats function room on Little Drysdale Street. The final team awards were also presented with Player of the Season -Brooke Dance, Best All Rounder - Jayla Tinus and Most Improved - Tahlia James. This event brings the curtain down on on the sides successful 2020/21 season, that saw the team compete at three intercity competitions over the last eight months.

Under the guidance of the new coaching combination of first time Head Coach Belinda Tinus and Manager Michelle Dance this side focused on improving fitness and skills, fun and sportsmanship.

The Wildcats first challenge was in Cairns last December.

With a determined outlook and great teamwork the side came away undefeated in their four games, including a hard fought win over rivals

Townsville. Maddy James was awarded a most improved defensive award after this weekend.

In February the team travelled to Mackay for the next competition. Once again the Wildcats dug deep to overcome a first game loss to Townsville, to take the next two games. The final game saw a rematch against Townsville. In a very physical and mentally exhausting arm wrestle, with constant lead changes throughout the 40 minutes of regulation time. the full time siren saw both teams tied at 49 each way on the scoreboard. In overtime our Wildcats played tenacious defence and dug deep, coming away with the

win 60 to 52. Lacy Horan was awarded the most improved defensive award from this meet.

The final round in March took the team to Townsville for their last outing before State Championships. The Wildcats were on a roll, undefeated after three games in the oppressive 34 degree plus heat and humidity that Townsville is known for. The final game against the hosts for overall gold. In the end home court advantage and a high percentage shooting display, presented Townsville with the win and Burdekin with a 10/12 record and a Silver medal. Mia Vivian was awarded the most improved defensive award from this

competition.

Sadly, the State Championships in Brisbane in April were affected by the snap COVID lockdown before Easter and with this in mind, the difficult decision was made not to travel, for the safety of all involved and the wider community. The girls to their credit remained positive and look forward to their next opportunity to represent together in the 2022/23 campaign.

was a 30 Target Medley Sweeps event with AA Grade cash being split between Glen Rea, Mark Stella, Ray Collinson, Peter Quinn, Phil Scalia, Alex Scalia and Ryan Hearn after they all shot 50/50.

In A Grade, Santo Grecco, Alan Lord, Ron Clive, Mark Fiamingo, Gavin McPherson and Lui Populin all shot 49/50 and shared the money. Sandra Crapela shot 49/50 to take first place cash in the B Grade section. First place in C Grade went to Peter Scott on 46/50.

Event Two was a 25 target Pointscore event sponsored by Lui & Ines Populin. The overall winner was Benji Micallef after a good shoot off, the final score was 192/192. Tony Caruso was the AA Grade winner with 189/192. In A Grade a shoot off was required to determine the winner as well. Ron Clive was declared the winner with his final score of 103/105. The B Grade winner shot the possible 75/75 in the event and went out in the overall shoot off and finished with a score of 126/129. Damon Geary won the C Grade with 73/75.

The Junior winner was Riley Mikkelsen with 74/75. Allison Skinner was the ladies winner after a small shoot off and a final score of 77/81. After shooting the possible Tony Coco missed early in the shoot off but was named the Veteran winner on 75/78.

The 25t Double Barrel Handicap sponsored by Ray Collinson. After a 27 target shoot off, Ron Gough was the winner and a final score of 52/52.

The 30 target Double Barrel Event sponsored by CVS Mechanical.

The shoot off had to continue into Sunday. Rob Hunter was the winner with a great score of 533/533. First in AA Grade was the shooter who was keeping Rob honest, Phil Scalia who was happy with his 532/533 score. In B Grade Bryce Simpson was the winner with 60/61 from Sylvia Rossato on 58/59. Damon Geary won C Grade and his final score was 42/43. In the Junior section, Alex Scalia won on 84/85. Riley Mikkelsen was the ladies winner with 48/49 and Tony Caruso was the Veteran winner after going a good distance in the overall shoot off and a final score of 120/121.

Sunday’s events started after a few rounds of the Double Barrel shoot off were shot. The event was a 30 target Double Barrel Continental event. Michael Zabala won the title of Overall winner after shooting 174/174 after another lengthy shoot off which went to pointscore after 75 shootoff targets. Lance Broom was first in AA Grade on 171. In

A Grade Lui Populin showed he still has it taking first place in A Grade after a shoot off and a final score of 70/71.

Peter DelleBaite had to shoot off before claiming first in B Grade with 45/46. Chantal Morelli was stoked to shoot the 30/30 in the event and claim first place in C Grade. Riley Mikkelsen was the winner of the Junior section with 36/37. Carol Betteridge won the ladies prize with 74/75 and Ron Clive won the Veteran’s with 37/40. These three shooters all shot the 30/30 in the event and were in the overall shoot off.

Event Six was the 30 target Single Barrel sponsored by QMN & John Calligaro. After a 25 target shoot off, Tony Caruso was declared the winner with a final score of 55/55. Alex Scalia took out first in AA Grade with 53/54. Lui Populin won his shoot off before claiming the A Grade prize with 30/31. In B Grade Max Baldwin was the winner with a 28/30 from Dave Guy on 27/31 after shooting off. Logan Rea was pleased to win C Grade with a good score of 26/30. Riley Mikkelsen took the prize again with 31/32. Carol Betteridge shot 27/30 to take the ladies prize. Tony Coco was the Veteran winner again with his score of 43/44 after shooting the possible 30/30 in the event.

The final event of the weekend was a 30 target Double Barrel G ra d e d M e t e ra g e e v e n t sponsored by B and M Drilling.

First place went to Pedro LeBlowitz after a good shoot off and a final score of 62/62.

Home Hill Golf Club

A small field took to the fairways on Wednesday 19th. The winner on the day was Larry Sgroi with a good score of 35 points. Carol Betteridge was the runner up on 33. The pin shots went to Carol and the chip shot was taken out

by Megan Barbagallo. Megan also managed to win the raffle.

Only 15 players turned up for the Friday Club last week. The winner on the day was David Falco who managed to shoot a 39 off the stick. The pin shots were taken out by Carol Betteridge and Kevin Swaffield. Carol also lucked out winning the putting competition.

On Sunday 23rd there was a Club Trophy Drummond Voucher up for grabs. The winner was Simon Power on 34 points, with Simon Davies the runner up also on 34 loosing on a count back. The pin shots were won by James Johnson and Scott Sibson.

This Sunday the club will be holding club pennants but you are more than welcome to come out for a game even if you are not in a team.

Footy Tips With all the penalties, sin bins, players put on report, and player send-offs has the League gone too far? I totally agree with the theory but the practice isn’t right and needs work. Especially with another 19 players fronting the judiciary.

Broncos V’s STORM WOW what can you say? The Broncos rolled the Roosters at home on the SCG on a special celebration day for their retiring captain and long term player in Jake Friend. Even with the Broncos finally finding some form on the back of rejuvenated Albert Kelly I find it hard to believe they will beat the Storm.

The Storm clinically demolished the Raiders 34 – 10, even with their second-string side. They missed all their star spine players yet still performed exceptionally.

The Burdekin Roosters and Hens will be back in action on Saturday when they meet Brothers in Townsville at Jack Manski Oval in four grades. Coaches will be glad to see these games out of the way as they have three home games in a row after being on the road so many times so far.

The day will start at 1.45 with the Hens up against the lady Brothers team.

Brothers started off the season losing two matches to Western Lions but have come good now sitting in fourth place behind the Hens.

Frank Beer and his girls will be out to show their true form after losing to Herbert River last start.

The girls were really up against it that day with some of the rulings really hard to fathom.

Frank has a good number to pick from and they should be strengthened by the return of Jemima Sutherland.

It is to be hoped fullback Shaniah Capper has recovered

from a knee injury suffered in Ingham as she was in great form in that game.

Frank has a good forward pack to work with and if Akeuilah Williams can get the ball out speedsters like Stephanie and Teah Lee Monday with Jo Morgan and Aleikah Heron could score tries.

Brothers are reported to be a big side so the speedy Hens team could cause trouble.

The under 19 game gets under way at 3.00 pm with the Roosters sitting third against the second placed Brothers team.

The young Roosters are coming off a big hiding of Herbert River with Brothers beating Norths last start.

Norths were too good for the locals when they played at Norths but it would be hard to think the young Roosters could play so bad again.

They have a good forward pack with Brayden Cotter, Ethan Roberts and Lachlan Shephard

Six Burdekin Panthers Football teams were involved with games on the weekend. The Kalamia Hotel Premier League and the Burdekin Tyre Service Reserve Men’s games were postponed to Tuesday night due to The Growers Race Day. On Friday night the Austral Masonry Funkies were at home to Estates White. Burdekin took the lead just before half time when Chris Archille was fouled by the keeper inside the penalty area. This resulted in the Estates Keeper being sent off and Zac Park converting from the penalty spot.

The Burdekin increased their lead to 2-0 when Kyle Marano scored in the 79th minute. Estates pulled one back when they too scored from the penalty spot in the 90th minute. Burdekin ran out winners 2-1 and recorded their first win of the season. They play Brothers next in Townsville on Friday night.

The Fabbro Diesel Services 2nd Division did well to dominate Saint Eagles Souths 5-1. They turned a 2-1 half time advantage into a 5-1 victory. Oliver Gabiola, Riley Christensen, Jack Shears, Daniel Smith and Damien Cassella all got on the scoresheet for the Panthers.

The win moves them into 4th place on the ladder with their next game away to Mundingburra Aitkenvale Olympic.

The Kalamia Hotel Ladies Premier League Team grabbed their 3rd draw of the season when they drew with Saints Eagles Souths.

Monica Licciardello’s goal put the locals ahead in the 65th minute only to see Saints Eagles Souths equalise in the 78th minute. The Kalamia Hotel Ladies are at home tomorrow night taking on MA Olympic.

The CA Contracting Ladies Reserve team fought out a 3-3 draw with Saints Eagles Souths

West Tigers V’s DRAGONS Two losers this week, Wests Tigers steamrolled by the Warriors and the Dragons beaten in extra time by the hapless Sharks. Head-tohead it’s tough with the Dragons holding a 20 – 19 advantage and both teams having a poor win ratio. Tigers 32% to Dragons 26% at BankWest Stadium. A genuine 50/50 chance and a flip of the coin, but I think the DRAGONS to WIN but not by much, only because they get a few stars back.

Was it an aberration, or have the wheels fallen off the Roosters and getting beaten in humiliating style by the struggling Broncos last week? Can we expect the same this week? Both sides are licking their wounds and looking to get back into the winner’s circle, but it’s impossible to believe the Rooster can play that poorly again. ROOSTERS to WIN easy this week, having a 26 to 14 headto-head winning ratio over the Raiders. All I see is misery for Ricky and his boys.

I can’t see the battling Sharks able to maintain their winning form. TITANS to WIN but it will be tough. The Sharks never stop trying.

Knights V’s SEA EAGLES The Knights were rolled last week by the Cowboys and looked flat and terribly out of form. While this week’s opponents, the Sea Eagles paying tribute to Bob ‘Bozo’ Fulton, were unbeatable.

The question is; can the Sea Eagle reproduce that form another week? The Knights are praying for the return of Superstar Ponga this week. The hurdle is too high for the Knights with their 4 and 7 win ratio and only 1 win from the last 5 games compared to the more consistent Titans with 6 and 5 wins and 4 wins from their last 5 games. The Knights can’t overcome the Turbo Tom SEA EAGLES who will WIN and win easily even with the possibility of the Knights getting Kaylan Ponga back from injury.

I think we’re seeing history in the making with the Panthers possibly going through the season undefeated. I can’t see anyone getting close to them in both attack and defence at the moment. They’ve even beaten the Rabbits, one of the comp most fancied teams, 56 – 12,

Another two losers this week, the Eels lost their second game of the year on the back of the more committed Sea Eagles and the spirit of the legend Bobby Fulton being there. At the same time, the Rabbitohs got a lesson in Rugby League from the undefeated Panthers. Both teams are on level pegging in stats, but Parra holds a slight majority with a 17 to 16 lead in head-to head-wins. Also again, 9 wins to 8 in 2021 will it be an Eels Fan Day? Did the Eels get beatten by an emotional team playing for their clubs Immortal Bob Bozo Fulton who passed away on the morning of the game?

Tough tipping but I expect the

Brothers are leading the reserve grade with Ben Smith and his Roosters coming fifth.

They have just missed out on a couple of occasions and only have to put it together to be a force.

Ben knows he will be without some key players as they are away working but he does have the cattle capable of pulling off a win.

This game will start at 4.30 pm.

A Grade coach Chris Perry knows he will be without Ryan Davenport and Jerome Lacco away working with newly promoted Jared Thorley but he would expect Kurt Perry. Temone Power, Mitchell Guy, Blake Hollywood.

Riley Granshaw and Tate Brombal back.

Perry will go well with new centre Eathan Hagarty while Jeffrey Searle will probably go to the wing.

Guy, Hollywood, Brombal, Granshaw and Power will be welcome back to the forwards against the strong Brothers pack.

Zac Heron is in good form and

he wants to show he should have been in the recent Townsville squad while Power will add strength with Guy that bit of toughness.

Granshaw was disgusted with the second half defence in Ingham so he will be out to make amends for that showing.

An added incentive will be former Blackhawk captain Daniel Beazley who leads by example taking no prisoners.

Brothers are undefeated so far and are on top of the ladder while the Roosters are running fifth.

In an upset last weekend Centrals beat Herbert River 36 – 34 while Brothers beat Norths 60 – 6 and Western Lions defeated Charters Towers out west 24 – 20.

In reserve grade Centrals beat Herbert River 42 – 4. Brothers beat Norths 38 – 10 and Western Lions beat the Towers 30 – 6.

The under 19 saw Herbert River forfeit to Centrals, Brothers beast Norths 30 – 0 and Ch Towers beat Western Lions 36 – 6.

The ladies had the Lions beating the Towers 30 nil, Brothers over Norths 22 – 4 and Centrals over the River 34 – 10.

A Grade coach Chris Perry

has made a couple of positional changes to his team to play Brothers due to injury and unavailability.

Joel Mason is regarded as one of the best fullbacks in the League but before that was a more than handy half.

With the under 19 team having an important game and Perry taking two players for A Grade, young half Rhett Williams will go back to that grade with Mason taking his place partnering Kali Nauque who moves back from lock.

Riley Horan was the number six in Ingham but he has other commitments.

Perry has brought outstanding under 19 fullback Declan Dowson into the top squad after recent good outings.

Dowson has good hands and can jump to diffuse high balls while he can also defend.

The pairing of Ethan Hagarty and Kurt Perry in the centres should be strong giving wingers Jeffrey Searle and new signing Apia Stephens room to move.

The forwards are solid even without Riley Granshaw, Temone Power, Riley Maddern, Tyrone

Sims, Ryan Davenport and Jerome Lacco.

Mitchell Guy, Zac Heron and Daniel Beasley are a strong front row backed up by Dylan Carew and Tate Brombal with youngster Brayden Cotter.

Perry said his squad may not have the experience of Brothers but they would not give in.

Injuries to Jess Clift and Shania Capper and Akeilah Williams junior league coaching means Hens coach Frank Beer has had to make a couple of changes to his team.

Th e re tu r n o f Je m i ma Sutherland to the forwards will strengthen that area while Teah Lee Monday will move to half back and she has to make sure her sister Stephanie gets plenty of clean ball as she has speedsters outside in Jo Morgan and Aleikah Heron.

The coach said he would go with Ashlee Agguirre at fullback as she has a turn of pace and can defend Jasyti Tallis is another with plenty of toe.

The Hens will start the day at 1.45 followed by the under 19 at 3, the reserves at 4.30 and the A grade at 6.

Red. Loz Barra scored twice for the Burdekin and an own goal from the opposition saw the match end evenly. The draw moves them to 3rd on the ladder with this week’s game at home to MA Olympic.

On the Junior front last weekend, the Under 12 team lost to Rebels Razorbacks 7-2 after holding them to 2-2 at half time.

The Under 15 team took on Saints Eagle Souths Red and turned a 3-0 half time lead into a 5-1 victory. Both teams are at home this weekend when the take on MA Olympic on Saturday.

Last Sunday and Monday the Burdekin Panthers Football Club had the honour of hosting this year’s U12 School NQ Trials at International Park. Our club members and school teachers worked together to host an outstanding selection trial. This event gave our young people a chance to demonstrate their talent. It was also a great chance for our coaches to network with others and expand their understanding of the game. Both members of the NQ boys coaching staff are mem-

bers of the Burdekin Panthers.

We wish Leighton Gallagher and Chris Eadie all the best for their tilt to win the State Titles in Toowoomba, later this year. A big congratulations goes to Brody Hughes, Khloe Quagliata and Milla Arboit who were selected in the respective North Queensland teams.

Monday Night Masters had a social kick around on Monday night. The date for the annual Mooney Charity Cup has been set for Saturday 17 July. While mentioning dates the Clash of the Clubs will be held on Friday night, Saturday and Sunday 8-10 October. Start getting your teams organised now. The Masters are in action again on Monday night.

In the A league Melbourne City were presented with the 2021 Premiership Plate after their 1-0 victory over the Central Coast Mariners. The other 5 places for the final series is anyone’s guess.

Teams on the ladder from 2nd to 9th all have a chance to get into the top six. The next few weeks will tell the story.

The finals in the Champions League and Europa Cup will be played this weekend. Manchester City play Chelsea in the Champions League Final in Porto, Portugal on Sunday at 5am. Manchester United play Villarreal from Spain in Gdansk, Poland, on Thursday also at 5am.

The English Premier League finished on Monday morning with Manchester City being presented with the Champions Trophy after their 5-0 win over Everton. Sheffield United, Fulham and West Bromich Albion are headed back to the Championship while Norwich and Watford are automatically promoted to the Premier League for next season. The third team to be promoted from the Championship will be decided on Sunday when Brentford play Swansea at Wembley in the richest game of the year. The winner goes into the Premier League and is guaranteed £ 170million ($310 million AUD) from sponsorship and broadcast rights. Not a bad pay day for 90 minutes of football.

European Leagues finished

on last weekend. Bayern won in Germany. Atletico Madrid in Spain and in France, Lille needed their 2-1 over Angers to finish top, one point clear of PSG. The outstanding fact in Europe was Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski scored 42 goals in the season. Not a bad effort when the leading scorer in the EPL was Harry Kane with 23 goals.

Silverlinks wash away title loss pangs with long awaited premiership Daniel Shirkie WITH two minutes to go in the game and the scores all tied up, the Burdekin Silverlinks might have been forgiven for thinking their shot had passed them by for another year.

The local side, led by coach Cara Trindle, managed to claw back a five point lead from their rivals the Runaways in the Grand Final’s last stanza, but were still all tied up heading into the game’s final moments.

Some desperate defence, and some fast moving ball through the centre proved crucial, and set up the perfect opportunity for a game-winning shot from the victorious Silverlinks.

Trindle had nothing but praise for her championship side, who came out on top 37 - 36 thanks to young gun Mackenzie Linton’s buzzerbeating final dagger that put the finishing touches on the narrow win.

“That win was for every girl who’s put on the Silverlinks dress over these 18 years,” Trindle said.

“We certainly did it the hard way, we were down for the majority of the game, sometimes by as many as 6.

“Everyone put in that defensive pressure which ultimately got us a loose pass or put them off their shots.”

Both Alix Leckenby and Mackenzie Linton earned praise for their efforts on attack, with Trindle

acknowledging how hard both girls had fought to keep the points coming off the back foot.

“I know Alix wouldn’t have wanted the heartache of a missed shot to lose us that game, she was calm, focused and everytime she got that ball it never looked like missing,” Trindle said.

“Mackenzie put a lot of pressure on herself and she knew she’d missed a few shots, so when she posted up for that last one, we knew she was never going to miss.”

Linton herself couldn’t quite believe the result and was quick to thank the club’s supporters for providing the perfect atmosphere for the game’s final moments.

“I can’t wipe the smile off

my face,” Linton said.

“It’s just the best feeling in the world, we’ve waited so many years and we’ve finally done it.

“It’s a special feeling, the crowd were amazing, you can hear them cheering, it’s the best feeling in the world, when everyone was running to each other aftewards, it was so good.”

The young star, who’s been signed to the Mendhi Rays in recognition of her talents for the past two years, said all the hard work over that period had finally been rewarded after watching her team come back from a points deficit to set up the do-or-die moment.

“It’s just so overwhelming,” Linton said.

“Everything I’ve done with

netball this year and last year, it’s all been worth it, to get that last shot, it’s crazy to think that I got to do it.

“We never gave up, even when we were down, we kept fighting and it all was worth it.”

Leckenby, Linton’s partner on the offence, also earned her fair share of praise taking home both Player of the Match and Goal Attack of the Year honours and keeping the team firing throughout and helping them overcome a rough patch in the final quarter to power ahead.

“Alix can shoot the lights out, she’s an amazing player and so good to work with,” Linton said.

“She’s the best shooting partner you could ask for.”
