This year, try something different. Instead of cutting out foods you enjoy, use the weaning stage to care for yourself as well as your baby, and build habits that last beyond January.

She focusses on supporting mums and babies with simple, evidence-based recipes and practical nutrition advice to make weaning and family meals stress-free.

1. Eat at the table with your baby A key part of baby-led weaning is eating together. Your baby learns by watching how you hold, chew and enjoy food.

Meals don’t need to be fancy. Simple dishes work beautifully - roast chicken and soft veg, scrambled eggs with Dunnes Stores Sourdough, or salmon with mashed potato and broccoli. Serve a small portion for your baby and a full plate for you.

2. Make mealtimes regular Children thrive on routine, and most adults do too.

From 6–9 months, babies move to three meals a day, with snacks starting around 12 months.

You don’t need strict timings, but having meals roughly around the same time each day keeps things calmer, and helps you stay fuelled when you eat alongside your baby.

Nutritionist tip:

Ask yourself: How can this meal work for me too?

Your baby’s porridge with berries and seeds can become your breakfast with added Greek yogurt, nuts and a drizzle of maple syrup.

3. Learn from your baby Babies are intuitive eaters, leaning in when hungry and turning away when full. Respecting these cues helps them develop healthy habits, and it’s a good reminder for us as adults too.

Nutritionist tip:

Keep mealtimes distraction-free. No phones or tablets means everyone can listen to their tummy.

4. Model habits Children who share regular family meals tend to eat a wider variety of foods as they grow. Babies and toddlers copy everything, so your habits matter.
