Summer Weaning with Dunnes Stores
Summer is a wonderful time to start weaning your baby. The days are brighter, mealtimes often move outdoors (less mess!), and there’s an abundance of colourful, fresh seasonal food to explore.
That said, warmer weather can bring a few challenges. Some babies may eat less in the heat or lose interest in food
altogether. And if you're travelling or on holiday, new environments can sometimes disrupt feeding routines.
Whether you’re just beginning your weaning journey or looking for ways to make it easier during the summer months, here are my top tips to help make mealtimes more enjoyable – for both you and your baby.
Babies only need small amounts of food
When your baby starts weaning, begin with just one meal a day – and don’t worry, they’ll gradually work up to three meals by around 9 months old. For now, simply focus on offering lunch or dinner.
At this stage, around 75% of your baby’s nutrition still comes from milk. If you’re breastfeeding, continue to breastfeed on demand. If you’re formula-feeding, babies aged 6 to 9 months typically need around 600ml of formula per day.
Think of the meal you give as ‘topping up their milk’. Small portions are perfect. For example, try one softly roasted sweet potato spear alongside an iron-rich food like a mini homemade beef burger, bean burger, or falafel. Follow with a strawberry cut into spears – the vitamin C helps your baby absorb iron more effectively.
What to feed your baby on hot days
On hot summer days, offer cool and hydrating foods. One of my favourites was blending avocado, banana, peanut butter, and milk (once both have been introduced as allergens) with a little unsweetened cocoa powder, then freezing the mixture into handy pops. These help cool your baby down while providing healthy fats, iron, and lots of goodness— especially on days when they’re not interested in their usual meals. Serve with a few easy-to-manage finger foods like roasted carrots, broccoli, or parsnips. Babies often don’t mind whether food is warm or cold, so letting food cool completely might actually encourage them to eat.

I also packed a few staples like mini oatcakes, Weetabix, and smooth peanut butter (again, once introduced safely). This isn’t essential, but I liked to bring a few ready-to-eat finger foods—mini muffins, fritters, or veggie pancakes—which gave me a couple of stress-free days to settle into our holiday surroundings. Most hotels and holiday rentals have fridges, and many have freezers too—just check in advance.

For most of us, holidays last just 7–14 days, and most destinations will have plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables in local supermarkets. Some of the easiest and most digestible foods for smaller babies include: Avocados –rich in healthy fats, fibre, and vitamins C, E, and K, along with potassium, folate, and magnesium. Bananas – an excellent source of energy; simply cut into spears and serve. Boiled eggs –once introduced safely as an allergen, these are a protein-rich, travelfriendly option.
Staying hydrated
All of these foods can be packed and brought with you to restaurants too. Don’t be afraid to do this—most places are more than happy to accommodate your lovely weaning baby.
Weaning like a pro tip - blend up your favourite Dunnes Stores seeds and bring them on holiday in a handy container. Sprinkle them over slippery foods to make those foods easier for your baby to grip—and eat! It also adds fibre and plenty of extra goodness too.
Your baby will get most of their hydration from breast milk or formula. Still, it's good practice to offer small sips of water from around 6 months (just 2–3 tablespoons) while they’re eating. You can give cool, boiled water, or if using bottled water, choose spring water only—as mineral water can be high in sodium.
When buying bottled water, check the label to ensure sodium (Na) levels are below 20mg per 100ml, and sulphate (SO or SO₄) levels are below 25mg per 100ml.
Many foods are naturally hydrating too—watermelon, mango, and strawberries are all great options for babies. Remember, your baby doesn’t need juice, sweetened drinks, or sugary ice pops to cool down.
