How to start potty training
The most popular potty training tips combine elements of parental prompting alongside following your child’s lead. Where they vary most is how long they take - those that claim to get the job done in a matter of days, versus those approaches that may take a few months.
Trying the cold turkey approach
Methods that claim to be able to potty train children in a few days or over a weekend tend to be the strictest and most intense. Have a quick Google search and you’ll find any number of books that promise results in three days or less. This type of approach is sometimes referred to as the bootcamp method or ‘going cold turkey’. The advantage is getting the whole thing out of the way quickly - short-term pain for long-term gain.
The drawbacks of the cold turkey approach
Encourage potty training by going with the flow Of course, there are more staggered approaches. But when it comes to encouraging potty training, a softly-softly approach is the recommendation and in case potty training is not going well is better to take a break. Smart Snacking This Summer
Once your baby reaches 12 months, they naturally become more active, crawling, standing, and cruising around the furniture, or they might even start to take their first step.
With this new movement, your baby’s energy needs will increase, and snacks will play an important role. They give your baby more energy to
toddle about while providing essential nutrients such as iron, healthy fats and fibre, all really important for healthy growth and development.
Having easy and nutritious snacks ready when the sun shines will make your life easier and help you avoid those ‘hangry’ moments for your baby.
What makes a good snack?
Protein is a hot topic, but research shows that most children exceed their daily protein requirements. Offering your little one 2-3 portions of protein each day is plenty to meet their needs and will also help put your mind at ease.
Proteins will also provide your baby with lots of other nutrients, such as iron, healthy fats, calcium, and other vitamins and minerals, which are
sometimes overlooked when focusing solely on protein.
First, head to Dunnes Stores and buy a compartment lunchbox, which is perfect for those days you are out and about. My little man always loved helping me to fill his lunchbox and the compartment boxes also make eating a little more fun...even now that he is older.
Start with iron
This nutrient is essential for your baby’s brain development and energy needs. Iron-rich foods like boiled eggs, shredded meat (especially dark meat), hummus, and beans work great. My favourite are the butterbeans from Dunnes Stores, which are lovely and soft for babies. All of these iron-rich sources just so happen to be great sources of protein, too.

Finally, add a little healthy fat

This will help with the absorption of iron, especially from plantbased sources. Good examples are fresh fruits like strawberries, kiwis, raspberries, mango spears, and cherry tomatoes, which you can quarter to make really safe. These will also give your baby vitamins and minerals.
Fats are so important for babies and young children because they provide energy, but they are also important in healthy growth and development, as well as brain health. Good examples of healthy fats for your little one include smooth peanut butter, full-fat yogurt, milk, cheese, and hummus.
Include a little water bottle to keep your little one hydrated, especially during the heat. Keep the portions small and varied so your baby can
