Dunkeld & Birnam Station - progress!

D&BStation Summer 2023 - Nikki Herbertson

For years there have been various and collaborative efforts to bring our Dunkeld & Birnam Station back to life With challenges to overcome on ownership of the Station, who holds the lease and owns the land - Network Rail, Scotrail, Perth & Kinross Council are all players - communications have often bounced between them

In August, there was a breakthrough to enable progress John Swinney MSP brought key organisations together to start working towards a good outcome for the community and all who might use or visit the Station By bringing responsible and relevant organisations together, including Network Rail, Scotrail, Transport Scotland, PKC and Historic Environment Scotland, it could be possible to secure a safe future for the building, improved access and a solution for the platform

Responsible bodies have been asked to clarify where responsibilities lie and to assess the state of the building, identify

what needs done and how long it will take to bring it into good condition Local attendees were asked to share at the next meeting what a positive outcome for community use might look like

What next..

With an invitation to present a distillation of ideas for a community vision for the Station at the next session convened by John Swinney MSP, this is an opportunity for relevant public bodies to get an idea of what our community vision would be for the Station - and to get their support

After years of discussion, chats on the platform, across the village, and most recently through the ‘Dunkeld & Birnam Station Action Group’ facilitated by Nikki Herbertson, there are lots of ideas and hopes about what this community would like to see at a Dunkeld & Birnam Station that works for everyone

With involvement across the community, hopefully it will be possible to shape and share an outline proposal, from what is known already and your contributions now

Watch out for updates on posters, social media, for information on pop up Station chats and next steps There are also boxes in local shops and Cafés to gather input Please get in touch if you, your group or business would like to be more involved

All welcome to community update - Birnam Arts, Tuesday 24th October 7 30pm

An informal group from across the community has come together to respond to this opportunity - for more info contact: Lachlan

On Doors Open Day my mother, sister and I went on a trip to Innerpeffray Library – Scotland’s first public lending library founded in 1680 It’s an amazing place full of fascinating books many of which are hundreds of years old We marvelled at a tiny one, smaller than a thumb nail, containing the Lords Prayer, one full of beautiful illustrations of animals that the artist can only have heard about through story and song and laughed at sermons ‘Woe to Drunkards’ which were written in 1627 with much the same message that they are today Books are such wonderful things and it is fabulous that we have our own Book Festival here This year our festival takes us back into our past and explores the 16th and 17th Century Scottish Witch Trials as well as The Birnam Oak's connection to Shakespeare's Macbeth I’d like to believe the story that the Bard actually travelled through Birnam on his way north to Inverness with a group of players and while here gathered inspiration for the great Scottish Play Read more about the festival on page 4

Move forward 250 years from the writing of Macbeth and we would have found people in Birnam admiring our new Station building Unfortunately, the building has not fared as well as the books in Innerpeffray and this grade 1 listed building is now in needs of help and of course the platform has been sinking for years If you are interested in contributing to ideas about the future of the Station building, please go along to the meeting on 24th October at Birnam Arts, Tuesday 24th October 7 30pm – see front cover story

It is astonishing what we, the human race, is capable of printing miniature books to building beautiful buildings

I find it amazing that NASA have managed to fly the Osiris-Rex spacecraft to the asteroid Bennu, land on it, collect samples and bring them safely back to earth I ponder this fact as I wait to cross the A9 junction from Dunkeld home to Trochry I wonder why is it that we are capable of flying to Bennu but can’t find a way to improve safety on these treacherous junctions? Maybe the only way to bring about change is to “screw our courage to the sticking place” etc Please collect a car sticker from the JAG group raising attention about this issue on the 18th October at the Niel Gow Statue and place it somewhere where it will raise awareness of this ever present danger to our community and all who pass through it by road Of course, if I was a witch I wouldn’t need to wait at the junction I’d just jump on my broomstick and fly up the Strath Maybe I’ll write a fantasy book about that while I continue to wait

Birnam to Ballinluig A9 Community Group

Working constructively to get the best community outcomes from the A9 dualling proposals

The next A9 Community Group meeting will be on Thursday 30th November, 7.30pm at Birnam Arts/ Zoom unless otherwise notified. All welcome!

We were expecting that we would be getting a visit from (another!) new Transport Minister Fiona Hyslop in late September, but have been told that there is a now a proposed date of 8th November for a visit by new Cabinet Secretary (for Transport, Net Zero and Just Transition) Mairi McAllan

Although a chance to brief the new Cabinet Secretary is welcome, it's very disappointing to have this delay and not to meet the Transport Minister just now We have asked John Swinney MSP to see if an earlier meeting can be set up It also implies - though we cannot be sure - that there will not be any Preferred Route announcement (and related community engagement) for Pass of Birnam to Tay Crossing until November at least Another year

Meanwhile on the overall A9 dualling front there has been a good deal of publicity this summer – in particular led by campaigner Laura Hansler of the A9 Dual Action Group about the delays in going ahead with dualling all of the sections north of us which have been signed off as ready to go (including, in our area, Tay Crossing to Ballinluig, in March 2021) . Her petition to the Scottish Parliament's Public Petitions Committee on the matter has now been upgraded by the committee to a formal committee enquiry www facebook com/groups/553744776511956/ On the local junctions safety front Pam Green of the Junctions Action Group wrote again to Transport Scotland on 7th Sept to request an update on the matters discussed at our meeting with the then Transport Minister Kevin Stewart MSP and officials on 5th June, in particular regarding the assessments that have been undertaken using information gathered from the temporary cameras that were installed at the Dunkeld junction over the Easter weekend, now 6 months ago.

The next Junctions Action Group meeting will be on Wed 4th Oct, 11am at Birnam Arts

As always you can contact us at email: dunkeldA9workinggroup@gmail com, and to have your details added (or removed from) our mailing list;

Arts News continued

We are excited to share that the 2023 Birnam Book Festival is taking place at Birnam Arts on the 21st and 22nd of October The programme is now live on our website www birnambookfestival co uk and tickets are on sale!

This year we will explore the 16th and 17th Century Scottish Witch Trials, The Birnam Oak's connection to Shakespeare's Macbeth and more

We will kick off the Festival on Saturday morning with our Illustrator in Residence Kate Leiper and our poet in Residence Morag Anderson’s “The Wisdom of the Cailleach” where we will explore the world of Celtic Folklore; other family events include “Scottish Street Songs, Rhymes and Games” with Storyteller Margaret Bennett, and two Art workshops for Children to enjoy on Saturday and Sunday afternoons

Our Festival’s theme this year is heavily influenced by the story of hundreds of Women persecuted and condemned for Witchcraft in Scotland in the sixteen and seventeen hundreds, to discuss this subject we are hosting several events including, Claire Mitchell and Zoe Venditozzi recording their podcast “Witches of Scotland” live, Phillip Paris’ “Last Witch of Scotland” a historical fiction capturing the true story of Janet Horne, the last person to be executed for witchcraft, Panic in Perth with Ashlyn Cudney who will explore the Perth Witch Trials and the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft and our Musical Evening Event “Heal and Harrow” with two wonderful Scottish musicians Lauren McColl and Rachel Newton who through their music pay tribute to Scottish Women persecuted as witches

We will also welcome successful authors who will showcase the writing of local people, and we have the honour of receiving bestselling crime novelist Chris Brookmyre who will present his most recent novel “The Cliff House” Chris along with Co-author Dr Marisa Haetzman who write together under the name Ambrose Parry will also be speaking about the latest instalment of their mystery series “Voices of the Dead”

One of the most interesting subjects we will explore this year is the connection between Shakespeare’s Macbeth and our very own Birnam Oak, we wanted to commemorate the 4ooth Anniversary of Shakespeare’s first folio by inviting Dr Toria Johnson who will share archives from Shakespeare’s Memorial Library and through a very special fringe event “Rare Macbeth History On Display” in collaboration with The Dunkeld Community Archive where an excerpt of Raphael Holinshed’s Chronicles of Scotland, published in 1577, a source for many of Shakespeare’s stories will be on digital display at the Birnam Book Festival, this was made possible by Innerpeffray Library who has generously allowed the Macbeth section of this volume to be digitised by the archive Come and view part of the rare book that inspired the Bard to create Macbeth, including its splendid illustration of the three ‘weird sisters’ An opportunity not to be missed!

Adding to the mystery this year we have the pleasure of welcoming Tintype Studios’ Exhibition “Something Wicked this way comes” this a fascinating multi locational exhibition which is also a treasure hunt where you will find hidden cyphers, solve clues and break codes hidden in and around Birnam Arts, including canvases, Victorian photographs, poetry and film which will lead you to uncover a secret message led by Macbeth’s Wyrd Sisters

As part of the festival’s fringe events, we have collaborated with Dunkeld and Birnam’s Film Club and Corbenic Path Poetry where you can join Path Poets in the magical fire circle for live readings around a bubbling cauldron of hearty soup The event will take place on the Corbenic village green

Lastly, we invite you Celebrate the opening of our 2023 Festival with Folklorist and singer Margarett Bennet, poet Morag Anderson, author Fiona Valpy and soprano Colleen Nichols at our Launch event on Saturday 21st of October at Birnam Art’s Main Hall

Breadalbane and District Riding for the Disabled (SCO47991)

Lots to report this month!! We now have a new site for our shed at Knockdarroch farm The old position is needed for a big vehicle shed to be erected and the RDA shed is now placed adjacent to the stable block where we can make use of the overhang giving us more shelter when needed The move took place just days before the start of term but all went seamlessly The riders hardly noticed the changes and have been making huge progress with their riding skills We have two new riders who are quickly gaining confidence

We did have to shorten the lesson time for some of our riders on one occasion as a result of not having enough ponies of the right size We are very much on the look out for the use of more ponies that are suitable particularly ones that are weight bearing If anyone thinks they could help us please do get in touch with the contacts below RDA always has a stand at the Bair Atholl horse trials which is manned by volunteers from across the region Some of our volunteers were there and we were pleased to pick out several photographs of our group on the display stands One or two proud parents!! We had another visit from Petra Humphrey, our regional coach, which is always a great pleasure as she is so encouraging She came to do the annual review for one of our coaches who got a big vote of confidence Dave Anderson, our county chairman also came along and it is good to be reminded that we are part of a huge nationwide organisation

Our stand at the Pitlochry Highland Games was a new venture for us and we were absolutely delighted to make £422 59 partly as a result of a very generous donation Many thanks to those who supported the stand and bought the quantities of home baking These funds are crucial to the group’s survival as fund raising and donations are our only sources of income, even more so this year as the week we were allocated at The Aberfeldy Thrift shop was too late in the year for the group to run it A date for your diaries – The AGM will be on Monday 13th November in the Church of Scotland room, Aberfeldy New members to the group are always welcome and anyone interested can find out more on our web-site www breadalbanerda org uk or contact us by email at breadalbanerda@gmail com

Event coming up!

A9 junctions at Dunkeld and Birnam group (JAG)

Wednesday 18th

October at 11 a m

Residents and campaigners are planning to hand out car stickers concerning the A9 junctions at Dunkeld and Birnam to highlight concern Look out for campaigners dressed in high viz outfits including ‘sandwich boards’ at the event when they formally launch and distribute car stickers and posters by the Niel Gow statue This event is to highlight the need for improved safety measures at our local junctions (This is separate but inclusive with the main group dealing with the A9 dualling – yes, we all communicate closely with one another!)

Some work has been done on the junctions but these are our six demands which must be done now irrespective of whenever the A9 is eventually dialled

• Improved signing at the end the dual carriageway heading north before Pass Of Birnam

• Upgrade road markings and hatching, consideration of double white line areas (no overtaking) on the single carriageway section especially between the end of the dual carriageway going north and the Birnam junction and up to the Jubilee Bridge

• Improved lighting at junctions

• Speed restrictions between the end of the carriageway going north and south to the Jubilee Bridge

• Cameras to assess the junction activity, ahead of dualling

• Serious consideration of a roundabout as an interim and potential long-term option at the Dunkeld Junction

Please come along and lend support

All local politicians, councillors, community councillors and press are to be invited to hear the concerns

Archive We will also have a digitised copy of pages from a very special book, courtesy of Innerpeffrey Library; Raphael Holinshed’s Chronicles of Scotland was published in 1577

It is famously the source of many of Shakespeare’s stories, in particular the plot of Macbeth In the 1577 first edition housed at Innerpeffray there is a splendid illustration of the three ‘weird sisters’ The Stratford Museum tells us that the edition that Shakespeare had access to was in his school, and it was a cheaper, second edition, sadly, without the woodcut pictures

Young Archaeologist Club

We had our first meeting o the 7th September with four young people joining the club Cropmarks were our first topic, including showing them a great photo taken by Ian Sinclair from the bell-tower of the Cathedral showing amazing cropmarks of the Duke’s gardens They made their own cropmarks out of stones, soil and cress, so hopefully they will come back with some examples of their own

Our next session is Thursday 21st September at 4pm in the Archive Please get in touch if you are interested in joining

We are starting a new winter club for anyone with an interest in history Every Wednesday from 1st November to the end of March, we will choose a different topic to reminisce over a cup of tea and cake Transport will be provided, so please get in touch if you are interested in coming along

The Royal School of Dunkeld –at the heart of our community

It’s great to be able to update again on exciting developments at the Royal School of Dunkeld (RSD) We were delighted to host a stall at the Birnam Games – this was mostly about fun involving splat the rat, nail in the bail, book sale and many other classics However it gave us the opportunity to speak to locals and visitors alike about the place of our amazing school at the heart of our community Huge thanks to all the parents and staff who helped out

One area under discussion in our Parent Partnership Group (PPG) - a space for shared conversation between parents/carers and the school – is what is known as ‘additional support needs’ or ASN According to Perth and Kinross Council the term “applies to children or young people who require additional support, long or short term, in order to benefit from their education Depending on [the] child’s needs, different kinds of support are available [This] is not restricted to educational support but can include multi-agency support from health, social services and voluntary agencies”

The Royal School of Dunkeld has a key role to play in delivering ASN support, working with parents/carers to ensure individual needs are met The PPG has an ASN sub-group which brings together parents and carers, and is a vibrant space for the sharing of thoughts, ideas and learning related to increasing ASN support

Recent discussions have included the idea of using Lego as an aid to learning, with the possibility of school staff and parent therapy training The school is a bit short of Lego though – if you have any lying around unloved, feel free to pop it into the school office Building on the schools’ celebration of Neurodiversity Week last session, the ASN sub-group are also discussing the Neurodiversity Umbrella Project - a colourful art installation to help raise awareness and understanding of neurodiversity - for example ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia or Tourette’s syndrome

The school would like to thank PKC’s Criminal Justice Unpaid Work Team for some lovely new handmade picnic tables to replace old tables which had become rotten or sadly had been vandalised We are delighted with them and hope they will be enjoyed respectfully by visitors to our playground out of school hours Finally – the school was delighted to work with our sister city in Asheville USA, to donate some artwork from the 2023 calendar to be displayed (and hopefully sold for fundraising) at reciprocal school art shows and galleries across the pond Pictured are Doug and Darcy Orr with Headteacher Mrs Williams Nicola Williams, Headteacher, Royal School of Dunkeld Graeme Cook, Chair, Parent Partnership Group

***ZIGGY IS MISSING*** *** £500 REWARD***

Sadly, Ziggy has been missing for one month now ZIGGY is a tabby cat with a white chest and white streak down his face. He is microchipped and neutered, he isn't wearing a collar Ziggy is 15, but he doesn't look it, but he is on daily medication for blood pressure He is super friendly and affectionate; he will purr if you speak to him or stroke him

Ziggy is missing from a remote area of Dunkeld, Perthshire, but he may have jumped into a van or car, so he could be anywhere.

Ziggy brother Mr Tiggs and his doggie sister Rosie and I are missing him terribly If you are feeding him, or have welcomed him into your home, please do get in touch He has been with me and his brother for 14 years after being rescued by the Cats Protection. He is very loved and dearly missed.

Thought for the Month

It has been noticeable this year how many visitors have been around the Cathedral over the summer; many day-trippers from around the wider area but also many more overseas visitors

I don’t suppose there are more than we were used to pre-covid but it struck me how good it is to get back to ‘normal’ and have lots of visitors – during the week and at services It is something I have always enjoyed over my time here, welcoming folk to the place we are blessed to call home

I suppose if I am honest, though, we are all suckers for a bit of flattery! When visitors eulogise about Dunkeld and the Cathedral with its long story there’s always an element of pride in showing off what is ours everyday!

On a less conceited note, however, it is not bad thing to see your own place through fresh eyes Familiarity does breed contempt or at the very least apathy and boredom Years ago, when I went to be interviewed for my first Parish, it was a particularly grim February weekend and I remember looking out over the landscape and saying to one of the elders ‘you know there’s a beauty about it even on a day like this ’ He had lived there all his life and seen every side to the place and replied ‘well I fail to see it ’ I took my enthusiasm to be a sign of a call to the place! There is no harm in getting an injection of enthusiasm and seeing what we have through fresh eyes

But all these folk passing through is also a reminder of how diverse and interesting the spectrum of humanity is and yet how similar we all are We all link together and can make connections with folk from all over The message of the Gospel is that our common humanity, embodied in Christ, unites us all The African concept of Ubuntu has become popular recently, which I think means something like ‘I am because you are, or because we are ’ We are not a bunch of individuals who occasionally bump into each other but our identity is tied up in relation to others There is something very attractive about that idea, reminding us that ‘no man/woman is an island’ but we are enriched by relating to each other

Which takes us right to the heart of what Jesus taught How do we do what God wants, he was once asked? Love God with all your heart, mind soul and strength, and love your neighbour as yourself ’ Fraser Penny

Appeal

Every year as part of our celebrations, we have a harvest appeal to raise money for a good cause This year the Kirk Session has decided our appeal should be for Cross Roads for Human Development The President of the charity is our own Gill Evans (Editor’s Mum!) who provided this short summary of the charity’s work

Joseph’s upbringing in India was as a Dalit, (an Outcaste, an Untouchable in the caste system of India )

As a young boy he was sent by missionaries to their school in Raichur He did well and eventually taught in a Theological College

His dream was that one day there would be a Primary School in his home village of Turukanadoni for underprivileged Dalit children There is now a twostorey building with 186 children on the roll! ALL children are welcomed however their parents must agree for them to eat, work and play together without discrimination There is no charge: a midday meal, uniform and books are provided

At the same time in the city of Raichur, a sewing project was started to teach basic sewing skills and enable women, mainly impoverished Muslim girls, to earn money Annually, £35,000 is required to pay staff and to provide everything needed for the children

The Kirk Session has agreed that we should support this charity through our Harvest Appeal and with the proceeds from the Supper

You can donate in one of the following ways:

- make a donation at a Church service during October

- By bank transfer to the Church Account with the reference ‘Harvest’

Sort code 80-06-57

Account number 00723183

An appeal letter will be distributed to members of the congregation to be returned to the church during October but if you don’t get that and would like to contribute please get in touch with Fraser Penny or Alison Gillies (sessionclerk@dunkeldcathedral org)

The proceeds from the Congregation’s Harvest Supper on the 29th September will also go towards the appeal

Wednesday Worship

A more informal, relaxed type of worship has started on the 3rd Wednesday of each month in Little Dunkeld Kirk We met earlier in the year, before the summer break and have got going again for the Autumn In October we meet on the 18th at 7 30pm

There is no set format but the evening includes some worship songs, an open discussion around tables about a Bible passage, and ends with prayer (and a cup of tea/coffee at some point!)

While the aim is to be suitable for younger adults everyone anyone is welcome If you think this is something you might be interested in please come along and give it a try

Ten ways to save money on your food shop

It’s likely you’ve felt the impact of the rising cost of living when doing your regular food shop recently Prices are up across the supermarket aisles, and with the cooler autumn weather setting in, saving money on our food bills is more important than ever – but how?

Plan your meals - Avoid spending money on things you don’t need or already have Have a good root around in the back of your cupboards – what could you use to pull together a meal? Then, plan your meals for the next week or so and make a list of the specific ingredients you need Check expiration dates - Get into the habit of checking the expiration dates on any items that don’t have a long shelf life Plan what day you’re going to eat these items to reduce food waste and help save you money Bear in mind that products aren’t safe to consume after their use-by date, whereas best-before dates tend to be more flexible Study the yellow labels - It’s a good idea to head to the reduced section first to see if you can pick up anything that’s on your list Yellow labels can be bargain opportunities, but not always I recently heard from a friend that a supermarket was selling 24 yellow-labelled cans of juice for £7 50 A few days later, the same cans in the same spot with the same yellow labels were £11! Always check the price, see if there’s a cheaper alternative and only buy in bulk if you’ll definitely use the items before they go out of date

Make the most of loyalty benefits - Lots of supermarkets offer free loyalty cards and other benefits that can save you money on various everyday items Find out what your local offers and get signed up

Don’t shop when you’re hungry - Shopping when you’re peckish increases the likelihood of impulse buying, so try and have a meal before you head to the supermarket Shop around for the best deals - Convenience stores tend to be more expensive because, well, they’re convenient They are good for the ease and speed of access but you may end up paying more Compare the cost of shopping in different places so you know how much you pay for each item at each different store This will help you find the best places to shop

Try a cheaper brand - Taste tests commonly show that we can’t really taste the difference between luxury and budget brands, so give a cheaper version a try – you might be surprised

Shop in the early evening - You can often find a bargain or two in the early evening as supermarkets push to sell off products that are nearing their expiration date Be sure to check the use-by or best-before date and whether or not you can safely keep it in the freezer for a bit longer

Share the cost - Having people round for food? Ask your guests to each bring an item or ingredient for the meal, instead of shouldering the cost by yourself You could also ask your guests to bring a dish they’ve pre-cooked Get local support - Breadalbane Community Larder manage the Social Supermarket at Offizone, Kenmore Street, where you can purchase 4 items for just £1 Open Saturday 11:00am – 12 00pm Ideal for those more expensive items Have you picked up a sandwich or a loaf of bread at the FoodShare shelter at the rear of Aberfeldy Parish Church? Items reaching their ‘Best Before’ or ‘Use By’ are available there for anyone wanting to reduce food waste in the community

Climate Café

Confirmation is in, that Summer 2023 has been the hottest on record

Every day we hear of the impacts of extreme weather events around the world and devastating consequences of climate change, especially impacting those who have done the least to cause this crisis And the Prime Minister is proposing a slow down to delivery on UK commitments

Without action the climate crisis will continue to worsen for many more, yet we have all the solutions we need to tackle it right now, and can still act quickly to avoid the very worst impacts of climate change

There are many reasons for hope that action can limit the worst impacts and slow the warming - which are a focus at Climate Cafés®

Since Climate Café® started here in 2015, more and more Climate Café® spaces are emerging around the world - generating thousands of locally led chats across communities, building connections and inspiring a lot of action

In Scotland, Climate Café® Dundee started recently, hosted by Dundee Rep with Climate Café® Lairg kicking off more vibrant chat and support for community action across the Highlands, joining Climate Café® Inverness and Climate Café® Black isle In our Sister City in North Carolina, Climate Café® Asheville kicked off an autumn programme after a pilot earlier this year and plans for Climate Café® Oulu in Finland will be the most northerly yet

Our local Climate Café® is shaping a programme for autumn/winter, with ideas to bring people together to inform and inspire There are new ideas for positive community action across our community, fresh connections with SWT at Loch of the Lowes, energy saving advice, a focus on improving opportunities for active travel and sustainable transport

Our local MSP, John Swinney, has been a great supporter of Climate Cafés® across Perth & Kinross and recently placed a motion in the Scottish Parliament which has quickly achieved cross party support too From a cup of tea in Birnam Arts in 2015 to a global Hub hosted in the Community Coworking SpaceClimate Cafés® are informing, supporting showcasing and encouraging bigger action and leadership from government and businesses too Come along, join the chat and a Climate Café® movement Check out the new Directory as the website is updated at www climate cafe

Climate Café® Dunkeld & Birnam next meets on 5th October 2023 at the Community Co-working Space Everyone welcome, free, with tea and coffee!

Paths and Nature Action Group

We have been busy removing invasive plants, most obviously Himalayan balsam, during the spring and summer months to try to limit their spread and to favour our native wildflowers, and pollinators such as bumblebees We have also cleared encroaching vegetation from some popular paths including the link to Loch of the Lowes There is always more to do so please get in touch if you can spare a few hours to help Our swifts have left for Africa, so now is the time to reflect on this summer ’s survey and plan what we can do to prepare a welcome for their return next May The survey found several previously unrecorded nest sites - you can see the results on the Swift Mapper website www swiftmapper org uk One option is to ensure they can find good nest sites If you would like to welcome swifts to your home next season you can buy specialist boxes or make your own – see the links for guidance here:

www rspb org uk/get-involved/activities/nature-on-yourdoorstep/garden-activities/create-a-high-home-for-swift s/ We have been trying a few swift nest box designs with some success and can advise and share our experience

We attended a session on how to protect selected riverside trees from being gnawed by beavers NTS has protected a few trees already and there is scope to protect some more along the Tay through the village, perhaps with some replacement planting and removing more invasive non-natives such as snowberry

Dog Fouling

To try and help end the severe issue of dog fouling within Stanley Hill we installed a holder earlier this year at the entrance to the park from The Cross The holder - which got off to a shaky start by going missing for 3 days before being found again – was welcomed by many, local and visitor, dog owner or not, and has made a huge difference to the park - children are able to play and run around on the grass again, Dunkeld Community Archive held their Living History Weekend there too- all due to people simply ‘bagging and binning’ It has in fact been so popular that we often have to replace the rolls daily and top up the hand sanitiser when we can Our charity has supported this and paid for these bags this year to help keep the park usable for the community and it’s many visitors, and additionally, the NTS team here in North Perthshiremost of us are dog owners – buy extra boxes when we shop for our own pets, and donate these too The reason for this letter? I would like to say “thank you” to whoever donated a roll of poo bags recently –Halloween themed no less! - and topped up the hand sanitiser, your kindness by this gesture is very much appreciated

We are aware that there are a number of “guardian’s” who help look after the park at the heart of this community by cleaning up after other dog owners who don’t, they do this daily and without looking for recognition and we can’t thank you all enough If you would like to support us by donating poo bags – as Heartland Vets in Pitlochry have already done – with one or two rolls or a box, then please leave them with us at the office here in Dunkeld – 11, The Cross- next to the Community Archive

Community First Responders –Dunkeld, Birnam and surrounds

We’ve made huge progress since our last update As a reminderCommunity First Responders are volunteers who are trained by the Scottish Ambulance Service to attend certain types of emergency calls in the area where they live or work Their aim is to reach a potential lifethreatening emergency in the first vital minutes before the ambulance crew arrives Their role is to help stabilise the patient and provide the appropriate care until the more highly skilled ambulance crew arrives on scene to take over the treatment They are usually based in rural communities where ambulance crews have longer to travel to the patient

There is a gap in Community First Responder provision in the area of Dunkeld, Birnam and surrounds – but work is well underway to fill that gap Previous calls for interest in The Bridge have seen a number of people come forward to volunteer to be trained up First Responders, and we can now report that we now have two people trained up in our communities, with another

three training through the rest of September, and some others in the queue behind Next steps are for us to secure all the kit we need, establish where and when we will be able to offer cover, and for those being trained up to work alongside experienced First Responders to get some experience

Alongside there has been herculean work to set up Dunkeld and Birnam Community First Responders as a charity (SCO52654) – with Bill Nicoll as Chair Establishing as a charity is a huge step forward, and allows us to fundraise, hold money, and offers a secure structure under which trained First Responders can operate

We need funds to pay for specialist kit – mobile defibrillators, oxygen canisters and much more We have begun actively fundraising, and we’ve a number of applications in – we’re going to need ongoing support though, this is a long game – so if any individuals or businesses are interested in sponsoring us, do get in touch We remain grateful to the Community Council for giving us some initial funding, and we were delighted to receive Community Ceilidh donations from the Asheville related event in late spring

We were also delighted to have volunteers staff a stall at the Birnam Games – it was great to be able to share our story with locals and visitors alike However we are still building our base - if you are interested in either exploring training as a First Responder, or considering how you might be able to help in other ways, please email info@dabfr org uk or get in touch via our new Facebook page

Monthly Dementia Cafe In Perth: An “Awareness Day”

The cafe is open every 1st Wed of the month from 10am - 1230pm We have put in place some restrictions to ensure everyone’s safety and well- being , and the cafe will continue to be reviewed in line with the Scottish Government’s review of Covid 19 restrictions

The cafe is run by Perth and Kinross Health and Social Care Partnership with representatives from Social Care, Daycare and Psychiatric Departments who are on hand to answer questions and give advice with their broad understanding of dementia

The hall is situated behind the North Church in Mill Street where many buses arrive

There are a few parking places in the High Street, which runs parallel and south of Mill with easy access to the hall via a wide Vennel Kinnoull car park is also near the hall We erect large colourful Dementia Cafe banners to guide folk to the venue ,whether approaching from Mill street or the High street Ours is a very friendly cafe We offer free refreshments which are brought to the tables by our volunteers, some of whom have experience of caring for family with dementia Usually , the cafe takes place in a small hall but next month , Wed 4th October, in addition to the cafe an adjacent hall is made available to make folk aware of what is currently available in Perth and Kinross to help those with dementia and also their carers This hall will include representatives from Dementia Link workers, PKAVS Carers Support, NHS Occupational Therapy, Welfare Rights, and Telecare Services There will also be a stall called Scarf which offers help with energy and will visit homes to give advice and provide energy saving devices

Some of our regular visitors visit on their own and have made friends in the relaxed atmosphere which has evolved over the last 15 years If you would like to join us, you will be made most welcome from the moment you walk through the door! If you don’t hear about our cafe in time , we look forward to welcoming you on Wed 1st November!

Notes from a Councillor 17

I have been rather busy lately moving house, thankfully normal service has now been resumed

The council agreed to make money available in their budget for participatory budgeting in Perth and Kinross The money is to be used to support local projects which help tackle climate change and the cost of living Around £40K of that money is available for the Strathtay ward PKC are looking to bring together a small number of community representatives from the Strathtay Ward to help us in four main ways:

1 Encourage local groups to submit proposals

2 Help to screen the projects before they go out to public vote, to ensure they fit local criteria

3 Help to raise awareness and encourage people to vote (voting will be online)

4 Help to organise a community event to celebrate local projects, provide a last chance to vote and ultimately announce which projects are receiving funds

If you think that you could help on this panel, then please get in touch

The Community Investment fund was another recent success Some of the successful recipients were Bertha Park Community Youth work, Community Wellness in Dunkeld and Birnam, a Young Archaeologist club and my personal favourite which was for a first responder service in Dunkeld and Birnam The fund was oversubscribed again this year but most applicants received something

I don’t have regular surgeries, I prefer to react as required If you have an issue that you would like to discuss then please feel free to call me on 07557815546 or email me: ijames@pkc gov uk

concerning the Railway Station and expressing the need for urgent action More to follow on that subject soon

We’ve also, alongside the A9 Project and Junction Action groups been highlighting the need for urgent action to take place on road safety in the area The last few months have seen far too many accidents on the A9, not to mention countless near misses and we need those responsible for the road and particularly the junctions to take urgent action Yes, we realise the benefits to travellers, but we must focus on the safety needs of local people using the A9

Without wishing to pre-empt the ever closer winter months, I’d like to inform you of an agreement the folk of Glen Quaich and Amulree have reached with PKC Roads Department The first of its kind in an area that could potentially pave the way for similar arrangements throughout rural parts of Perth & Kinross Snow clearing equipment and significant volumes of salt has been delivered to strategic points within the area The agreement reached will allow residents with suitable vehicles to use the equipment provided to clear the roads of snow and put down grit on stretches of road suffering from ice The intention is for this to support, not replace the

efforts of council workers to keep the roads clear in severe weather conditions and to ensure the safety of essential school transport functions

Having volunteered on a number of ventures since retiring, I’ve been involved with the Community Council on two separate occasions I also spent time as an Independent Prison Monitor visiting prisons and talking with both prison staff and many inmates on a variety of subjects and also as a member of the Samaritans All rewarding, but without question the most challenging and yet rewarding has been my time on the Community Council Currently, there are vacancies open on the council and anyone living in the Dunkeld, Birnam and district area who would be interested in joining the team of volunteers would be made most welcome I can promise them an interesting and varied time If that’s you, please make contact with any of the current members in person or send an email to dbcc correspondence@gmail com and we’ll provide you with the detailed information needed to apply
