The Bridge, edited by volunteers for the people of Dunkeld, Birnam and the surrounding villages since 1974. Thank you for all your support.

Dunkeld & Birnam, The Bridge

The Bridge Newsle er is produced and distributed by Dunkeld and Birnam News CICa Community Interest Company Registered in Scotland SC813544

With the rivers now at their summer low, there are spots along the banks usually hidden underwater that make the perfect place to pause. I recently found myself si ing on the beachy bit at the confluence of the Tay and the Braan, delivering my very average historical speech to a visitor about why the cathedral is located where it is.

Over the years, I’ve even risked slipping the odd historical nugget into this column. And whenever I got my dates muddled or missed an important detail, I could count on receiving a kind and informative le er from Mrs Eileen Cox, se ing the record straight. Sadly, Mrs Cox passed away last month. Her contribution to our community — and especially to our historical archives — leaves a remarkable legacy for which we remain deeply grateful. (See page 18.)

One piece of local history with lasting significance is the arrival of the railway to Dunkeld and Birnam, and with it the building of the station and surrounding hotels. My recollection is that the Duke of Atholl initially refused permission for the railway to cross his land, so passengers had to disembark at Dunkeld and Birnam, travel north across Atholl land by coach, and then rejoin the train. Hence the need for a bed for the night — and the Birnam Hotel. It was also John Kinnaird, the station master, who championed the creation of the Birnam Institute — now Birnam Arts. Both the hotel and Birnam Arts are going through important periods of renewal, and you can read the latest on Birnam Arts on page 6.

Change is constant — some of it more welcome than others. But one change I certainly celebrate is the completion of the new platform at the station. What a relief to get on and o the train without having to drag the mobile steps around! A huge well done to all

Birnam to Ballinluig A9 Community Group

Working constructively to get the best community outcomes from the A9 dualling proposals

The next A9 Community Group meeting and our AGM will be on Thursday 26th June, 7.30pm at The Canonry, Cathedral St. Apologies for the late notice postponement of the 22nd May AGM/meeting

We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible while we review the past year and present status and elect o ce bearers for the coming year.

We have received a request from Stuart Mo at of Transport Scotland who would like to have a meeting with the A9 Community Group, the Community Council and any other interested parties to discuss the Pass of Birnam to Tay Crossing dualling project. This presumably will include the status of the DMRB3 consultation report. We are trying to ascertain whether this could be fi ed in to either our postponed AGM meet or the next Community Council meeting on 23rd June or whether it will require a stand alone meeting sooner than that. We are consulting with the Community Council about this and will advise as soon as there is an agreed date and venue.

And again!

In case you have not yet read them, in particular if you made comments a er the respective Transport Scotland community engagement exhibits on the A9 dualling of Pass of Birnam to Tay Crossing are available at:

involved. We look forward to sharing a full round-up of the project in the next edition of The Bridge (see front cover and this page).

Another project Mrs Cox o en supported me with was anything related to the history of the Recreation Club, which has since become the Sports and Leisure Hub. I feel sure she would be delighted to see the club thriving — and would be encouraging us all to go along to the Tennis Club Open Evening on 13th June (see page 7), or to join the bowlers for a more leisurely summer evening activity.

Whatever you’re up to, I hope you enjoy this month of long days, light evenings — and the chance to sit a while beside the river

Platform Upgrade Completed at Dunkeld & Birnam Station

Full Report on O cial Opening in Next Edition

A major milestone has been reached at Dunkeld & Birnam Station with the completion of a £3 million project to improve accessibility for all passengers. Both platforms now feature raised sections, eliminating the need for additional steps when boarding or alighting from trains — a simple change with a big impact for many travellers.

The upgrade was delivered by Scotland’s Railway in partnership with the Dunkeld & Birnam Station Community Group, and marks a significant investment in our local transport infrastructure.

A full report on the o cial celebration — including the unveiling of a commemorative plaque, safety posters created by pupils from the Royal School of Dunkeld, and reflections from project partners and John Swinney MSP — will appear in the next edition of The Bridge.

BIRNAM ARTS Situation Update – May 2025

Following the Birnam Arts community sessions held on the 3rd and 17th May, the Board of Trustees has pledged to come back to the community with an expanded ‘situation report’ on the challenges faced by the organisation.

As a quick reminder, Birnam Arts is a charity whose roots date back to 1883 when the original Birnam Institute was founded by public subscription. A major building extension at the Millennium accompanied the evolution of the Institute into the present day Birnam Arts.

As flagged in the last edition of the bridge, the organisation is facing a number of challenges.

Key headwinds facing Birnam Arts fall into two main categories:

Financial Sustainability:

This organisational review, signposted in the last copy of the ‘The Bridge’ cannot be the success we need it to be without active participation from the community in the review process. We know that within the community there are many people with the skills required to make a meaningful contribution to the review process. So, if you have something to o er please contact Birnam Arts at chair@birnamarts.com. In particular we are looking for those with a background in management / organisational / strategic change, the arts, hospitality, HR, law, finance, building management, retail or commerce.

Join us for our annual summer end of term concert on Monday 16th June at Birnam Arts. Come along and listen to our young musicians show o their new skills and hear our bands perform some of the favourite tunes. Doors open 6pm for 6:30pm start and running until 8pm. As usual it’s free to a end and we’ll have a cash donations box available if you would like to contribute.

We’re also looking forward to our bands competing in the Perthshire and Angus Provincial Mòd again this year at Breadalbane. Rehearsals are well underway for a busy month ahead!

For anyone who would like to join, we do still have a limited amount of spaces available to learn guitar, whistle, fiddle or accordion. All classes are in small groups lasting half an hour each week. They are completely free and we provide instruments, without cost, for our members to take home and use as their own.

Our junior and senior bands are for those who can already play at least a li le, and are suitable for most instruments. We welcome accordion, string, wind and brass players, guitarists, pianists and more to join in with our musical adventures and concerts throughout the year.

½ hour group lessons - Mondays 4-6pm Junior trad band (P5-S2) - Mondays 6:30-7:30pm Senior trad band (S3-S6) - Mondays 7:30-8:30pm All classes and bands run weekly during term time based at Birnam Arts.

Although we are based in Dunkeld & Birnam, we’re open to anyone living in surrounding areas such as Aberfeldy and Pitlochry, Blairgowrie and Coupar Angus, Stanley and Luncarty and everywhere in between.

We rely entirely on funding and donations to keep our group accessible to all and as always, our thanks go to SSE Renewables, National Lo ery, Gordon Duncan Memorial Trust, Basil Death Trust, Scops Arts Trust, The Lang Foundation, Hugh Fraser Foundation, Crescendo and Enchanted Forest for their funding, and all of the local residents and groups who have generously donated money and instruments.

If you do have any small guitars, fiddles or pianoaccordions hanging around your home and would like them to be brought back to life, we’ll happily put them to good use.

• Birnam Arts is subject to the same structural economic challenges faced by other organisations within the sector.

• Costs have risen across every part of the organisation; on average ~20% compared to pre-COVID levels, especially utilities and keeping a large building open 360 days a year.

• An action plan was put in place to address these challenges in 2024, however, whilst income has recovered to pre-COVID levels, it continues to lag the increase in costs.

• Birnam Arts has become increasingly reliant on grant funding and the commercial elements of the organisations do not supplement charitable activities to the extent they once did.

Organisational Sustainability:

• Birnam Arts is a busy, surprisingly complex organisation, encompassing (*):

• Community Hub: The organisation is a hub for 14 community organisations.

• Arts Programme: Encompassing festivals (4 per year), performances (>30 per year) and exhibitions (9 per year).

• Participation Programme: Encompassing Well Being and Learning classes, Visual Arts Workshops, Theatre and Dance Classes & Workshops, Music Classes & Workshops, Schools Work and a variety of special projects.

• Café, o ering breakfast, light lunches, a selection of homemade cakes.

• Shop selling a selection of gi s.

• Space hire including technical support and catering for meetings, conferences, weddings and parties.

• Beatrix Po er exhibition which a racts in excess of 5000 people per year.

• Birnam Library.

(*) Figures from Birnam Arts Impact Report

• All of this is under one roof with a small professional in-house team, overseen by a volunteer board of trustees who need to balance charitable aims, maintaining a facility accessible to the whole community and the need to be commercial in order to cover costs.

• It has become clear that managing this complexity in the current organisational and governance structure is not sustainable in the long term.

For all of the above reasons, the Trustees have initiated an Operating Model Review to help identify the steps that need to be taken to ensure the future of Birnam Arts.

Even if you are not in a position to help with the review, please do support Birnam Arts by using the cafe and shop as much as possible this summer, or even be er come along to an exhibition, class or show as well.

Our sincere thanks to everyone who has already contributed to idea sharing and planning at the two community sessions in May, and to the Birnam Arts sta who are working hard to keep delivering everything that we do in these challenging circumstances.

Birnam Arts Co-Chairs

D and B Leisure Group (the Sports Hall project)

The 2025 AGM of the D and B Leisure Group (the Sports Hall project) was held at the Co Working Space on 6th May. The minutes of the 2024 AGM were reviewed and approved; Kevin Lancaster, Chair, reported that we have continued to wait for the Sports and Leisure Hub (former Recreation Club) to progress the “Masterplan” ,agreed with them in 2021, before making any decisions regarding the possible use of our remaining funds. It would appear that at present the Hub Management Commi ee of the Hub is content with managing its existing facilities and we are unaware of any plans for further development. It is understood that the MUGA continues to be well used but that the Bowling Club membership continues to decline. We remain holding the balance of the funds and will periodically review how they are best applied.

There was some discussion about possible use of funds in line with the Group's constitutional remit and it was agreed to take this up first with the current Hub Commi ee in the context of the "Masterplan" and to o er background briefing to new members. Margaret Sco , Treasurer, presented the annual accounts which were approved. The new bond in which most of the Group's funds are held will mature on 1st Nov 2026. Thanks were extended to Bill Nicoll as Auditor.

The following were reelected: Kevin Lancaster, Chair; Graham Rees, Vice Chair; Margaret Sco , Treasurer; Alasdair Wylie, Secretary; Bill Wright and Peter Guthrie, Commi ee Members. The next AGM will be on 12th May 2026.

If you would like information about the Leisure Group, it's constitutional remit, the "Masterplan" or anything else please contact Alasdair Wylie, Secretary on awylie2002@ yahoo.co.uk or 07927 175121

Breadalbane & District Riding for the Disabled (SCO47991)

With Easter being so late this year followed quickly by the May bank holiday, riding got o to a rather stu ered start at the end of April.

However with a reduced number of riders it did provide the perfect opportunity for further training for our great new group of volunteers and on yet another glorious day it was great to be back “in harness” again. Our lovely new pony took it all in her stride and was the star of the show. We are immensely grateful to her owners for the huge commitment they are making transporting her quite a distance to Knockdarroch every week.

Now that we are back to our full compliment of 4 ponies, we are able to o er riding each week to 12 children who will be coming from 5 di erent schools in the area. Our aim is to provide an enjoyable experience and at the same time help them to achieve as much independence as possible on horseback together with learning about the care and welfare of ponies. Later on in the year they will be tested on their progress and Achievement certificates will be awarded. More about this as the weeks go by!! Four ponies, 12 children – we can never have too many volunteers!! If anybody is interested in joining our group please do contact us through

our email address breadalbanerda@gmail.com or ring Vicky on 07786262329.

Community Developments

Dunkeld, Birnam and District Community Development Trust

The Trust was set up over two years ago with the objective of delivering the objectives defined in the Community Action Plan (CAP) from 2022 which itself arose from the community’s e orts during Covid-19.

The Trust is clear that it will not take on or get involved in activities where there are existing groups or organisations. We do however work closely with a number of local groups including the Paths and Nature group, the church, the library group amongst others. We are also providing banking support to groups –including the Repair Café and Foodshare- which do not have their own bank accounts.

The Trust is a membership organisation- we currently have about 150 members- with day to day management undertaken by the Trustees who are currently Jan Silburn (Chair), Jane Bremner, Roseanna Preston-Jones, John Gilruth and Stuart Paton. We are incredibly lucky to have Beth Taylor working as out Community Development O cer. We would like to thank Anne Cameron for all her support as a Trustee but she has decided to step down due to work commitments. However, we are pleased to announce that James Jarvis has been co-opted as a Trustee. We are looking for further Trustees to take the work of the Trust forward. The role is not too onerous (promise) so please drop a note to [] or speak directlty to one of the Trustees if you would like to find out more.

The aims of the Trust are distinct from those of the Community Council which has a statutory role in relation to planning and broader role in relation to assessing community viewpoints

on a range of issues. We are very pleased to be working with the newly reformed Community Council.

The principle projects currently being worked on by the Trust are:

The Care Project (PH8 Caring Support) continues to grow across the PH8 area. Eilidh, our Coordinator, is now linking a few people with the support they require just beyond the post code area and is looking to develop relationships with one or two adjacent communities. The outcome of a key funding bid with a direct bearing on the future of the project will shortly be known. Until then, Eilidh will keep her focus on recruiting new people as Personal Assistants and Befrienders and giving them the support and guidance they require to get started. Once we know the outcome of the funding bid, we will provide further information through The Bridge. We are hopeful that we

will see the project expanding over the next year into a truly integrated service for people requiring personal care and support around the home.

A ordable Housing. The Trust is working closely with the Community Housing group to address the range of issues associated with housing including a local social housing list, identifying possible sites for new builds, sources of funding and assessing the local need.

The Artisan Village is progressing to the next stage of formally considering a community asset transfer of the land currently owned by PKC.

As announced in the previous edition of the Bridge, we are advancing ideas for a local energy group to deliver local renewable projects, domestic renewable projects (eg solar panels) and plans for improved insulation.

Three Churches in the Community

Thought for the month

The Ministry of Presence: Walking the Emmaus Road

In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to be consumed by worries about tomorrow or regrets of yesterday. Yet, Scripture reminds us to embrace the beauty of each moment, trusting that God is with us in the present.

Jesus Himself taught this when He said, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Ma hew 6:34). Being present allows us to fully experience His blessings, cherish the people around us, and serve Him wholeheartedly.

For me, recent ministry has been deeply rooted in presence—in simply being there, listening, and embodying Christ’s love in Birnam and Dunkeld. I have found joy in walking alongside others, sharing in their lives, and witnessing God at work in the quiet, everyday moments. Like Mary, who chose to sit at Jesus’ feet instead of being distracted by many tasks (Luke 10:38-42), I have learned to pause, to be still, and to recognize God’s presence in all things.

Now, as I transition from stipendiary ministry to a new path—one of spiritual accompaniment—I step forward with trust, knowing that God’s presence continues to guide me. This new calling is an Emmaus journey, walking alongside strangers in sacred conversation, listening, discerning, and witnessing the quiet movements of the Holy Spirit. Just as Jesus revealed Himself to His companions on the road to Emmaus, I pray that in each encounter, hearts may flower like springtime with recognition of His presence.

June brings new beginnings, longer days, and fresh opportunities. As I reflect on the journey so far, I am grateful for the privilege of being present—for the conversations, the shared laughter, and the moments of prayer. Each interaction is a sacred gi , a reminder that God is at work in ways both seen and unseen. May we embrace today with gratitude, knowing that every moment is a gi from our Creator and every step on the journey brings us closer to Him.

Living in Awareness of His Presence

To cultivate a deeper awareness of God’s presence, we can:

-Practice gratitude—recognizing His blessings in daily life.

-Spend time in prayer and reflection—inviting Him into our thoughts and decisions.

-Engage in worship—whether through song, Scripture, or quiet contemplation.

-Serve others—knowing that in loving others, we are reflecting His presence.

God’s presence is not just a theological concept—it is a lived reality. It is the peace that surpasses understanding, the strength in times of weakness, and the joy that fills our hearts.

Go well friends it has been a pleasure to be present with you all

Farewell to Lesley Ann

The ‘Thought for the month’ in this edition of The Bridge is LesleyAnn Craddock’s last as she will soon be leaving us as she retires from the fruitful ministry she has had here. It seems no time since you came! Lesley Ann has been joyful, faithful presence in this community and now that particular journey has come to an end.

On behalf of the other churches and the wider community we wish you God’s blessing as you retire from this ministry and embark on whatever journey he has in store for you. Whatever that you will embrace it with characteristic vigour and energy and we wish you well.

Every blessing to you and Ashley as you adjust to a new phase in life.

All welcome from any church or none.

Sunday@4

What is happening at the Cathedral?

Locals and visitors alike can’t have failed to notice that there has been a lot of sca olding and safety fencing around the cathedral for some time now. Over the last few years there has been deterioration in the stonework which has meant pu ing a fence around the building to prevent anyone being injured by potential falling masonry. It is not very a ractive, however, this is a temporary measure!

The ruined part of the Cathedral is in the care of Historic Environment Scotland who have a programme of works which will eventually lead to removing sca olding and safety fencing. The Choir (the part still used) is owned by the Church of Scotland.

The Kirk Session has done a lot of work on planning what has to be done to make the building safe and preserve it to be used by future generations. A conservation architect has prepared a report and a schedule of works and the task now is to raise su cient funds to carry out the work. The proposed programme of work includes interior work such as a new heating and lighting system which will make the building much more environmentally friendly and comfortable throughout the year.

The estimate of what this will cost is around £3.6 million which is a considerable sum for the congregation and community to raise. Applications have been made to the National Lo ery Heritage Fund and Historic Environment Scotland and our hope is that those two together will provide a significant sum which will get us well on the way. There will still, however, be a lot of money to be raised.

The Kirk Session believes this financial burden should not fall on the congregation alone. Dunkeld Cathedral is a building of national significance in the history of Scotland which we are privileged to have as a place of worship but its preservation is a task which requires much wider support. The Kirk Session, therefore, is engaged in a process of raising the money required by:

•Applications to various bodies for grants (in addition to the two mentioned above. •Finding new and imaginative ways to raise funds locally

•Re-establishing the Friends of Dunkeld Cathedral to widen support in the UK and beyond.

The Cathedral is of huge importance to our community here, not just those who worship week by week but for concerts, weddings, other functions and it draws many visitors to the area which has a benefit to many local businesses too.

If you would like to help by contributing to the appeal and ge ing the Cathedral restored to its former glory then please contact the treasurer on treasurer@ dunkeldathedral.org

If you are interested in being involved in the Friends of the Cathedral then please let us know by emailing friends@ dunkeldcathedral.org

This is a once in a generation task to ensure that our cathedral will still be standing here and in use for centuries to come.

Nduumoni Sand Dam

The O ering from the Christmas Eve Service in the Cathedral and the money raised on Santa Day in the Duchess Anne was divided between two charities – one was a Salvation Army project to build a Sand Dam in Kenya. Paul Latham sent some information to update us on what these projects can do.

The Salvation Army in Kenya East is addressing the urgent need for clean and safe water in Nduumoni, a small village east Kenya. For many women, the burden of collecting water is an unrelenting task which involves digging into the riverbed to scoop water from underneath the sand. It is a task that takes many hours and the water collected is o en unsafe to drink. In Nduumoni, prolonged droughts are frequent wiping out household’s livelihoods exacerbating poverty due to reliance on rain-fed agriculture. With the changing climate, permanent rivers have become seasonal, and food insecurity has increased.

However, Nduumoni village’s story began to change with the construction of a sand dam.

A sand dam is a concrete structure that is built across a dry riverbed, as rain falls it is captured behind the sand dam wall, where it is naturally filtered and stored by the sand in the riverbed. As the river flows it brings more sand along with it, which collects upstream of the dam, in turn creating more water storage capacity. The water is safely stored in the sand where it is protected from evaporation.

In Nduumoni village, a shallow well next to the river enables the community to extract the water stored in the sand dam using a hand pump.

One of the benefits of a sand dam is that it raises the water table of the local area, meaning communities can grow crops, establish tree seedlings, and grow fruit trees alongside the riverbanks.

The surplus crop produce can be traded to provide an income, transforming the livelihoods of the communities.

Peter Musyoki, a 54-year-old father of three, is one of the local farmers who has seen the benefit of the sand dam.

Peter recently returned to Nduumoni having spent 15 years in Nairobi, working as a casual labourer.

He said, ‘We could not grow anything before the sand dam as the land was so dry and could not support any crops. However, since the construction of the sand dam, there has been regeneration of the vegetation along the riverbank, there is now life; birds, trees, and shrubs have started growing’

Peter is a model farmer who is currently earning reliable income from the sale of fruit tree seedlings and selling citrus fruits from his orchard. Besides growing varieties of vegetables, he is also growing pigeon peas and cassava which are drought resistant crops. He

has established a seed bank which he supplies seeds to the local farmers.

For Peter, returning to his village has not only provided him with reliable income but he has been able to share his knowledge with his community. Peter has established some good markets for his fruits and vegetables and is excited at the opportunities to make income in his rural village. Peter shared how his economic life has improved since returning to the village. He said, ‘I can now comfortably pay school fees, medical fees and provide for the needs of my family. My life has become be er in the rural than when I was in the city.’

Many thanks to all who supported this project!

EvergreenGardening for everyone

‘Evergreen’, our new “gardening for everyone” group, met for the first time at the Guide Hall on 6 May and we got straight down to business, planting up new wall planters and our fantastic large, “manger” planter. The la er enables people to work with plants at waist height, or from a chair. Have a look when you are next passing at a great selection of herbs and other pre y plants. Of course, no-one predicted such a protracted hot, dry spell so watering has been a bit more labour-intensive than envisaged! We’ve also planted some annual flowers in seed trays and these are being looked a er at the CoWorking Space, for planting out and/or o ering to members of the group and wider community once they have grown on a bit.

We’ll be meeting again at the Guide Hall on Tuesday 3 June from 1030-1200 for some more gentle gardening and we’d love to see you if you would like to join us. The gardening activities we are doing are designed to make it possible for those who may need to work from a seated position to share the enjoyment of gardening, in the company of like-minded folks. We may be indoors or outside, depending on the weather and activity. No prior gardening experience is necessary but if you are a seasoned gardener we look forward to tapping into your knowledge as well as to sharing our gardening stories and reminiscences.

This is a trial project of eight sessions this summer and we welcome your ideas and suggestions as to what sort of gardening activities you would like to do and how the project might develop. See calendar below for dates of the sessions currently planned. With grateful thanks to the Guide Hall for use of the venue, to Dunkeld, Birnam and District Community Development Trust, Dunkeld & Birnam Co-Working Space and Perth & Kinross Council’s Community Investment Fund, also to members of the community who have donated or are loaning tools and equipment.

Dunkeld and Birnam in Bloom

Thank you to everyone who supported our co ee morning on the 25th April we raised £585.68, which is a great result. Also thank you to all the volunteers who baked, po ed up plants and gave up their time to make the morning such a success. The plants that weren’t sold were taken back to St Ninian’s and most of them have now gone raising a further £30. So, we are all set for purchasing bedding plants and compost which should put on a good show over the summer months, then bulbs for the Spring and replacing a few shrubs that have had their day.

The dahlias and begonia’s that volunteers grow from previous years tubers are also coming along nicely. With the good weather it is so temping to get them into the ground and clear some space in our homes but there is truth in the saying “Ne’er cast a clout till May be out”

We received a donation last year from our Twinning village of Asheville North Carolina. We have now received a list of shrubs and perennials which will survive in both locations. Our plan is to plant them in the smaller planter at Lagmhor over the next year. Further updates as the year progresses. Work in St Ninian’s continues. The path was power washed by the Community Payback team. The benches are being looked at as some of them are now needing repaired. We meet on a Monday morning at 10am. Groups can be found in St Ninian’s Garden, Dunkeld and Torwood Park, Birnam. Anyone who would like to come and join us, please do.

Thank you, Moira (07931 758 456)

Community Orchard Update

Our picnic tables have been popular during this recent spell of very warm and dry weather but how will this weather a ect this year’s harvest? We’ll have to wait until autumn to know for the apples and pears but we’re looking forward before then to the so fruit and also the early plums. ‘Herman’ is the first to ripen, sometimes as early as mid-July. It has dark blue plums with yellow flesh, whilst ‘Opal’ is a li le later to ripen, from early August. And we’ll have red, white and blackcurrants, gooseberries, blueberries and brambles over the summer. Of course, the birds and wasps will no doubt take their share!

The orchard occupies a prominent site by the bridge, joining the communities

of Dunkeld and Birnam. On land belonging to Atholl Estates, it was once used as a market garden. We welcome members of the community as volunteers – age and lack of previous experience is no barrier. Many of us began with no understanding of fruit tree care and have been learning “on the job” with the support of more experienced members. Rest assured that we build in tea breaks to our work sessions, o en with homemade cakes! And there may be other ways you can support the orchard if you are unable to volunteer “on the ground.” Otherwise, please just enjoy this special place.

Sunshine, Strawberries, and Celebrations at Moore House Group Dunkeld Campus

Like much of Scotland right now, the hills of Bu erstone are basking in a spell of glorious weather and at Moore House Group’s Dunkeld Campus, we’re making the most of every sun-soaked moment. With our sights set firmly outdoors, the energy across campus is vibrant and full of promise.

A er months of planning and planting , our sensory garden is coming to life. The polytunnel is bursting with fresh produce and tender young plants, and just yesterday we savoured our first bowl of freshly picked strawberries—sweet, sun-warmed, and devoured in seconds! As we dig new planting beds and rejuvenate our campfire area, the ideas and plans of our children and young people is leading the way. They’re brimming with ideas for transforming this space into a sanctuary for relaxation, exploration, and growth. We’re also documenting this exciting journey with a photo diary, captured and edited by the children themselves, to preserve the memories and mark the transformation of our grounds. With the sunshine holding strong, many lessons are now being held outdoors. For those si ing their SQA exams, the countdown is on, not just for results, but for their chance to unwind in the gorgeous grounds admiring the scenery a erwards!

Our thoughts are also now turning to Sports Day, and excitement is building. A highlight this week was a trip to The Workshop in Aberfeldy, where some of our students watched as Emily’s winning medal design was transformed from sketch to wooden reality through the magic of laser cu ing. The choice of sustainable materials underlines our ongoing commitment to our environmental responsibility. A huge thanks to the team at The Workshop for hosting our children and helping us bring the design to life.

This stretch of glorious weather also shows o our beautiful grounds and buildings to full e ect. Our new Outdoor Activities Co-Ordinator, Sara, is bursting with ideas to make the most of our stunning Perthshire se ing. Her hands-on approach (evident as she mountain biked alongside our students with great enthusiasm) bodes well for an exciting programme of outdoor adventures ahead.

As June and our new school year approaches, we also look ahead to new beginnings. For the first time since opening our Primary School in 2023, two pupils will transition into Secondary school; a moment of pride and celebration for all of us. To mark this milestone, our first-ever Primary School Leavers’ hoodies are being printed, and two flowering cherry trees (or as we call them “cheery trees”) will be planted as living memento’s of their journey here.

Meanwhile, one of our Academy students is preparing to take the next big step by heading o to university. These transitions, both big and small, are powerful reminders of the growth and achievements nurtured within our campus .

At Moore House Group Dunkeld Campus, the sun is shining and so are our young people.

Pupils and sta at the Royal School of Dunkeld had a special reason to celebrate recently, as First Minister John Swinney visited the school to mark a major milestone in their environmental journey — becoming the first school in Scotland to achieve eleven Green Flag awards from Keep Scotland Beautiful. The Royal School first joined the international Eco-Schools programme in 1997 and earned its first Green Flag in 1999. Since then, they’ve consistently renewed the award every two years, showing a long-standing commitment to sustainability, environmental learning, and community action.

Openinghours: Thursday:5pm–7pm

bringing art, culture, books, learning, creative communities and local history and heritage to people across the whole of Perth and Kinross. https://www.culturepk.org.uk/

As part of their most recent Green Flag application, the school’s Eco-Commi ee took on a wide range of projects. These included campaigning successfully for compensation from gas company SGN to replace trees lost during pipework, building their own wind turbines, and hosting a One Planet Picnic for the local community. They also entered the Upstream Ba le® art competition with an eye-catching dolphin sculpture made from so drink cans — highlighting the threat of plastic pollution in the River Tay.

During his visit, Mr Swinney praised the pupils for their leadership on climate and nature issues, noting that young people will face the greatest impact of climate change but cannot be expected to shoulder the burden alone. He also confirmed renewed Sco ish Government funding to support the EcoSchools programme.

Nicola Williams, Headteacher, said:

“We are incredibly proud of our eco journey over the past 25 years. Our children are passionate about the environment, and we are lucky to be based in such a beautiful part of Highland Perthshire — a place that inspires us all to take our responsibility seriously.”

Barry Fisher, Chief Executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful, added:

“Achieving one Green Flag is impressive — achieving eleven is truly exceptional. The pupils and sta at Royal School of Dunkeld are a credit to their community.”

Eileen Cox – a tribute from Dunkeld Archives

We were very saddened to learn of the recent passing of one of the most important figures in the Chapter House Museum Trust & Dunkeld Community Archive – former volunteer and dedicated researcher Eileen Cox.

Eileen was one of the founder members of the Archive and responsible for much of the local research we have available today. Many years were spent climbing the 42 spiral steps up to the original Archive rooms above the Chapter House in the Cathedral. Being close friends with Alexander Murray Robertson and Helen Jackson, who were both professional researchers, Eileen was responsible for their extensive collections being deposited with us. One of Eileen’s biggest contributions to the Archive was an amazing rescue mission. Eileen and Brownlie Young were responsible for rescuing the Sco ish Horse archive records from a skip when the Sco ish Horse museum closed in 1999 !

Eileen worked for the Archive as a volunteer until 2019, including the Chair of the management commi ee for many years. Her retirement was a huge loss, although she did continue to work from home.

Eileen was also a huge part of the Historical Society, being on the commi ee for many years and organising the graveyard surveys, historical talks, as well as many fantastic trips.

Ruth, our Manager, talks fondly of many years of working with Eileen, and thanks her for the wealth of local knowledge she passed on to her personally.

We send her family and loved ones our deepest sympathies, and feel huge gratitude for the knowledge and passion that Eileen brought to the Archive during her time here.

Notes from a Councillor

I am writing this article whilst on the train to Leeds where I am pleased to be a ending UKREiiF (UK Real Estate Investment and Infrastructure Forum) in my capacity as Leader of Perth and Kinross Council and as Chair of the Sco ish Cities Alliance. This is a great opportunity to show case our investment propositions, se ing out a compelling vision for sustainable long term growth across the region and our willingness to embrace and encourage inward investment.

At a recent council meeting the decision was taken to go out to consultation for the establishment of a short-term let control zone in the Highland Perthshire, including parts of Strathtay Wards. The Dunkeld and Birnam Development Trust along with their Aberfeldy counterparts wrote to Local Elected Members urging us to use this legislation as one of a ra of measures to increase the availability of housing within the area. I would ask members of the community to take part in this consultation, please.

In early June we will find out who is elected as new members of the Dunkeld and Birnam Community Council this will be an important period for the new community council as they will need the support of the whole community.

The current financial situation at the Birnam Arts Centre is concerning for everyone in the community and I sincerely hope that financially sustainable solution can be found.

I would like to remind everyone that the first Saturday of every month is free bus Saturday for anyone taking a trip within the Perth and Kinross boundary. Also, Perth and Kinross Council is running a consultation on the future of public transport provision throughout the local authority to look at ways to maintain and enhance the public transport o er.

I had the great pleasure of handing over the keys of 3 ex PKC minibuses to Community Groups.

The Administration brought forward a proposal that instead of auctioning o vehicles, that had become surplus, that they be gi ed to Community Groups who could benefit from these vehicles. More buses will be allocated in the Summer.

Talking of Summer these last few weeks have been glorious, nature seems to have liked it as well with more bu erflies and insects around and with many young birds fledged, I hope this weather continues and when it does rain, which is also necessary, that it happens at night.

Hope everyone has a grand Summer and as always you can contact me by the usual means.

News from our Community Council

Community Ma ers – By-Election, Projects and Progress

At our most recent Community Council meeting on 21st May at the Duchess Anne Hall, I was pleased to update residents on a number of developments since our last gathering on 29th April at Birnam Arts. I’m continually grateful to our council members for their time and energy in pursuing the many actions we’ve set together.

By-Election and Postal Voting

We’re heading into an exciting by-election period. Postal ballots will be issued around 29th May, with ten candidates standing for five available seats—including our three co-opted members. Voting closes on the 19th of June when the results will be announced. For those new to the process: if you’re on the local electoral roll, you’ll receive a postal ballot pack through the post. This will include a list of candidates, a ballot paper, and a return envelope. You can vote for up to five candidates. Once completed, place your ballot in the provided envelope and post it back using the instructions enclosed—make sure it arrives in time to be counted. Postal voting is easy, secure, and ensures everyone can have a say in shaping our community’s future.

We look forward to welcoming our new members!

New Website Now Live

Our new Community Council website is now live at h ps://dunkeldandbirnamcc.co.uk. Thank you to Kirsty Gowans and Peter Guthrie for ge ing us to this stage. QR code flyers are being distributed around the village to make the site easy to access via smartphone. Please take a look and let us know what else you’d like to see added.

Engaging on Local Projects

Muirhall Energy is holding three consultation events later this month regarding the proposed North Logiealmond Windfarm, including one in Birnam on 27th May. They’ve also agreed to a end our June meeting to provide feedback from these events. In other updates: we’ve published dra policies on our website for community input, supported the successful approval of the Castle Cleirach sale by NTS to PKC, and supported work on Hermitage signage and the adoption of Inver’s telephone box. Information on Gri n grants, planning, and more is also available online.

Looking ahead, we’re working with the development trust and local residents to establish a tra c and parking working group. I encourage everyone to get involved - your ideas, time and participation are what makes our community thrive. Join us at our next meeting on Monday 23 June at 7pm at the Guide Hall in Birnam.
