It seems strange to be writing about mid-summer ’s day before I’ve packed my winter jerseys away Hopefully by the time you are reading this, someone will have turned the thermostat up and going out won’t require the careful layering of coats and scarves

A particular highlight in June will be the weekend of 28th – 30th when The Archives are holding a ‘Living History Weekend’ This gets underway on Friday night with our very own community storyteller, Lindsey Gibb, sharing tales of ‘The Lost Witches of Dunkeld’ at 7pm in Birnam Arts As you may know, this year marks the 400th Anniversary of the publication of Shakespeare’s first folio which includes Macbeth – so get ready for lots of witchy references in the months ahead including those at the Birnam Book Festival in the Autumn

As you will see from our front cover photo and the article from Loch of the Lowes on page 15 our ospreys have successfully bred again Alongside opportunities to go to their hide to view these amazing birds, there are other amazing natural sights to see, including the opportunity to go on a ‘Beaver Breakfast’ on June 23rd This is a very early morning event to experience wildlife responding to dawn as it spreads over the loch, while enjoying coffee and a croissant in the lochside hide (Booking essential)

It’s great to see that the MUGA is hosting lots of new sporting activities, including the latest additions of Netball on a Sunday afternoon between 4-5pm and Boot Camp between 12-2pm on Saturdays If there is an activity for which you are qualified and would like to lead, get in contact with the MUGA sub-group for more

information about how you could offer this to the community (see page 5)

Finally, our thanks to David MacDougall for his persistence in getting the Hermitage-Inver path reopened (see page 16) Perhaps the health and safety brigade will soon attach a notice to life itself – how about, ‘Warning - death inevitable’? I also agree with David’s point about the danger of the A9 crossing and hope that the meetings the A9 group are holding with Kevin Steward MSP and Transport Scotland will get some traction after many years of lobbying (see page 2)

Whatever you are up may I hope you enjoy the long, and hopefully warm, summer evenings

Birnam to Ballinluig A9 Community Group

Working constructively to get the best community outcomes from the A9 dualling proposals

The next A9 Community Group meeting, and our AGM, will be on Thursday 8th June, 7.30pm at Birnam Arts/ Zoom unless otherwise notified. All welcome!

We're glad to report that Kevin Stewart MSP the new Transport Minister will be coming to Birnam for a visit on 5th June to discuss the A9 dualling plans for Pass of Birnam to Tay Crossing - as we have done with three of his predecessors since 2017 – and to learn about the Community Preferred Route voted for in 2018 We hope he will provide some definite advice about when Transport Scotland (TS) will meet with the community again, and we also expect that that he will discuss the interim safety measures on which TS has been working along this stretch of the A9 as well as those which the Birnam and Dunkeld Junctions Action Group is still requesting

One of those, a roundabout at Dunkeld junction, was the subject of a motion by Strathtay Ward Councillors and discussion at the May meeting of Perth and Kinross Council The interest of the Council is to be welcomed and will be followed up

As always you can contact us at email: dunkeldA9workinggroup@gmail com, and to have your details added (or removed from) our mailing list;

I Wasn’t Prepared Mat Dugard 3rd – 23rd June

In an attempt to find meaning in today’s fast-paced life, Mat Dugard’s exhibition of paintings at Birnam Arts presents us with ‘a visual stream of consciousness diary’, where elements of illustration, landscape, portraiture and text are abstracted and layered like a mood board, offering moments of reflection within an overstimulated world

Dunkeld Cathedral Art Exhibition

At the time of writing, registration is going well for our 53rd annual Art Exhibition to be held in the Duchess Anne from 29th July31st August We will have a mix of familiar names along with a good number of new artists The artists’ work is showing on our website:

www dunkeldartexhibition com

I have been asked when we will be returning to a longer exhibition, upstairs in the Duchess Anne; unfortunately we do not have enough volunteers to make this possible at the moment We used to run for 10 weeks, from the end of June through to end of August and at one time stayed open until 9pm, which was reduced to 7pm During the covid years, since 2020, we have managed a 4 week exhibition and our hours are 10-4pm We always have 2 stewards at a time and each day, at present is broken into 2 shifts 10-1 and 1-4pm It is an ideal way to meet people and make new friends and if you would be interested in helping out, please get in touch at Dunkeldart@aol com We would like to keep the Exhibition going in the future as it means a lot to the exhibiting artists as well as our volunteers and visitors to Dunkeld Many thanks to Dunkeld & Birnam Community Council for the grant they awarded us towards the cost of AA road signs for our Exhibition

Dunkeld & Birnam Traditional Youth Music Group

Dunkeld & Birnam Traditional Youth Music Group has now been running for nearly two months and we’re happy to report that it’s going well and growing in numbers each week At the time of writing this we have close to 30 budding young musicians taking part in our classes and bands and already have our very first end of term concert coming up on 19th June We offer free weekly tuition and instrument provision in fiddle and piano-accordion, as well the opportunity to perform live music as part of one of our Trad bands - and it’s not too late to join The tuition is delivered in weekly small group classes by local tutors Karys Watt (fiddle) and Gill Hunter (accordion)

We also have junior and senior mixed instrument trad bands available for those who can already play, at least a little, regardless of the style of music already learned

Although this year we can only provide tuition for fiddle and piano-accordion, we are very keen for a wide variety of instruments to be part of the bands and would encourage fiddle and accordion players, violinists, cellists, flautists, brass players, guitarists and players of any other instruments suitable for trad music to join We very much hope to have a piano/keyboard player in each group, but are particularly keen to encourage piano and keyboard players to come along and transfer their skills to learning trad music on piano – accordion

Junior trad band is for ages P5 – S2 and Senior trad band for ages S3 – S6

Classes and bands run weekly during term–time at Birnam Arts and are completely free The group is open for anyone to join who will be aged P5 – S6 in August 2023 and who lives in Dunkeld & Birnam and surrounding areas

For more information, to let us know you’d like to join, or if you’re interested in coming to our concert please email dbtradgroup@gmail com

DB Trad Group is a not for profit organisation and runs on funding and donations

We are taking donations of ½, ¾ and full size fiddles and small piano-accordions with 24, 32 or 48 bass buttons If you have any of these hanging around your home and would like for them to be put to good use, we will happily take them

Breadalbane & District RDA (SC047991)

Our first morning’s riding for the year was quite a test of endurance for all involved The biting east wind together with frequent hail showers was not the ideal start and even the ponies were turning their backs to the wind!! However spirits remained high and it was evident that the children who had been before were delighted to be back and to meet the new ponies Also they quickly demonstrated how much they had remembered over the winter months Some of our new riders concentrated on stable management getting used to the proximity of a pony while others got mounted and began to experience the wider horizons of riding !! It was a big learning curve for all new participants and there were beaming smiles all round Due to the May bank holiday and the Coronation holiday we missed two weeks riding so our next time out was 15th May At the time of writing it is still bitterly cold but hopefully some warmer weather is around the corner

We are very sad to have lost our only male volunteer due to ill health He was a much appreciated member of the group and he used his ‘handyman’ skills in so many invaluable ways Some male expertise and input to the group is always welcome

Anyone interested in contacting the group or learning a bit more about us can access our web-site: breadalbanerda org uk or by email breadalbanerda@gmail com

Hub and MUGA Update

We are very pleased that the MUGA continues to be very well used- recent new activities include netball (trial sessions at 4-6pm Sunday afternoon) and boot camp/martial arts training (Saturday 12-2pm)- please come and join in these and the many other activities on offer We will post information on all these activities on the Dunkeld and Birnam Sports and Leisure Hub Facebook and Instagram pages

Unfortunately, there was a significant and dangerous incident at the MUGA in April

This involved the release of fireworks which damaged the roof of the MUGA and could have caused serious injury Due to the nature of the incident, the Hub Committee decided to pass over the relevant CCTV footage to the police to deal with the situation We have now completed the repair to the roof We very much appreciate the support of everyone who has expressed their shock and disapproval at the incident, reiterated the value of the new MUGA facility and the strength of feeling that this type of incident cannot happen again

The main outstanding issue with the MUGA project is the car park As many people are aware the new car park, between the Hub and Medical Centre, is unusable after wet weather We are therefore progressing the option of laying hard core over the car park This work requires consent from PKC, from whom we sub lease the land, and the Church who own the land As soon as we have these approvals, we intend to progress with the improvements to the car park

Finally, we have had a good response to membership in the new membership year which started at the beginning of April If you want to join the MUGA, tennis or bowls (or indeed all three!) please go to:

https://clubspark lta org uk/DunkeldandBirnamSportsandLeisureHub/Membership/Join

Fees are extremely reasonably priced for the facilities on offer, and free for under 16s or those in full time education (apart from a small £5 fee to join the tennis club) Alternatively, if you would like to make a donation to the club please email dbsportsleisurehub@gmail com

We look forward to seeing you over the summer playing netball/tennis/bowls/ football/ hockey/etc!

Dunkeld and Birnam Train Station - Update and community consultation

Dunkeld and Birnam Train Grade A list station is critical condition due to being vacant and neglected since 2014

Despite sustained efforts from many local people, the station condition has continued to deteriorate and the building is now too dangerous for anyone to be allowed internal access It seems that this is because Network Rail and Scotrail remain unclear about their roles and responsibilities in relation to the station building

An informal Station Action Group involving lots of different local people over the years has been trying to establish who is responsible for the station building condition and how the building can be used for community benefit A report on activities and progress

this year is available on request will be shared online and at local events

To increase the influence and impact of the work of the informal Station Action Group (STAG), we need to formalise our work as a community group The quickest and most strategic way to do this initially would be for the Station Action Group to request to become a subgroup working under the umbrella of Dunkeld, Birnam and District Community Development Trust (“the Trust”) This would give the Station Action Group an entity through which, with agreement of the Trust trustees, it could seek funding for station related community engagement, consultation and feasibility studies

Similar to the Housing Group, the STAG subgroup would put in place a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to operate as an autonomous group of the Trust to undertake activities, including applying for funding, to support achievement of its objectives related to the station building protection and maintenance celebration and protection of local history and heritage related to the station community consultation on future community ownership and use of the station building monitoring and evaluation of community involvement in future use of the station

The outcome of the STAG sub groups work would be one or more of the following:

1) Health, safety, security, travel and tourism risks related to deteriorating station building are more effectively monitored and managed through better communication and collaboration with Network Rail and Scotrail

2) The station building is protected and renovated so that it is in a fit state to be used by anyone enquiring as a potential leaseholder

3) The station building is protected and renovated and taken on under a community asset transfer by the local development trust or another appropriate local community organisation with relevant track record, experience and community purpose

4) The station building is protected and renovated and purchased through community right to buy by the local development trust or another appropriate local community organisation with relevant track record, experience or community purpose Pitlochry, Stow and Naird station are good examples of stations managed and used by/for community benefit

Those interested in participating in the work of the STAG would join the Trust and then volunteer for the STAG subgroup The STAG would use the Trust systems and processes to minimise administration and ensure a joined up approach liaise with the community council on station and community related matters work collaboratively with other local organisations encourage participation of those in the community who are most disconnected from their station

The proposal to operate as a subgroup and draft MOU will be presented to the Trust trustees at their next meeting Please email your comments, support or objections to StationActionGroup@gmail com by 30th June 2023

Local Masonic Donations

As a result of fund raising by The Provincial Grand Lodge of Perthshire West and The United Lodge of Dunkeld a £500 donation was made to the Dunkeld and Birnam Mens Shed Jackie MacLean stated “the donation is very welcome and will enable us to purchase protective clothing and health and safety equipment Those items will enable the shed to carry out various community projects which in turn will enhance the appearance of the village” The photo shows Tom Gordon presenting the cheque to Bill Nicol with other members of the Mens Shed

The members of the United Lodge of Dunkeld also decided to donate £500 to the local detachment of the Army Cadet Force Detachment Commander, Craig Ross, thanked the Masons very much for the donation and said that "it will be used to buy equipment for the cadets and for activities such as adventure training educational trips and training exercises" The photo shows Ollie Coe presenting the cheque to 2nd Lieutenant Craig Ross with the Cadets and Sergeant Julia Duncan

Three Churches in the Community

Thought for the Month

I would imagine that there may be quite a number of people who don’t realise that The Bridge is produced by the church It started back in Tom Dick’s time as minister here –one of the innovations he introduced to provide a parish magazine From those beginnings, through various editors and advertising managers, it has developed into what it is today under Sally’s editorship and John Gray’s financial guidance (The Kirk Session is currently looking at ways its financial position can be sustained for the future )

It is, of course, largely dependent on volunteers - like so many other things in our community The Tuesday Lunch Club is going strong again post-Covid, as is the Friday Meeting Place, each run by three teams of volunteers There is the Parent and Toddlers group, the Art Exhibition, the Men’s Breakfast, the food share tables and Christian Aid, the Charity Shop to name just a few of the things that go on in the community here, all thanks to willing volunteers

The Monday after the Coronation was called ‘The Big Help Out’ encouraging more volunteering all over the UK Dunkeld could have shown the way! It is often said that volunteering is good for us, mentally and physically It is good to feel useful, to have something to focus on and helping others is always beneficial to both helper and helped

Of course, there is always room for more people to volunteer Every group and society in this area is always on the lookout for willing helpers In church life, it is fundamental to how we understand ourselves In the New Testament one of St Paul’s favourite images for the church is ‘the body of Christ ’ An organization where each constituent part does its bit for the benefit of the whole, under the headship of Jesus Christ For a parish church it is about community; serving the community of a congregation and the congregation serving the wider community in whatever way it can, to express the love of God in practical ways The church is at its best when it is not a one-man band but when everyone can contribute in some way and build up the body as a whole

So all volunteers deserve a hug pat on the back because without them things like the Bridge simply wouldn’t happen and we’d all be the poorer and if you have any spare time there is a whole host of groups out there looking for you!

Erratum : Ed:

Apologies to Jackie MacLean for accidentally leaving a paragraph from the previous Bridge edition written by our organist Hazel Murch in the middle of his column This is the correct version for Jackie How long have you been involved in the church? (Here and anywhere else ) I have been involved with the church since childhood with a long break in the middle Like a lot of young people, when we break free from family ties we wander away from a life style that we were brought up in But as Hazel commented on previously that thread back to the church and Christ was always there, for me, that thread must have been somewhat robust I then came back to the church what I thought was by accident My late mother was visiting from Raasay and as was her normal, she wanted to go to church on Sunday, so we took her to the Cathedral We were welcomed by one of our current elders with, lovely to see you, is it a special occasion? It was a bit like a bolt from the blue What happened to me when it had to be a special occasion before I went to church I am now in the hugely enjoyable role of welcoming both locals and visitors to our cathedral on a regular basis

Thanks to all who helped with and supported the fundraisers for Christian Aid this year The local committee will be meeting in June to total up the amount raised and review all the events

Where did you grow up?

Who’s who in the Parish Church?

For the ‘Who’s who in the Parish Church Column’ this month we have asked Sean Hanafin to say a bit about himself

Sean is the church officer or Beadle at the Little Dunkeld and looks after lots of small repair jobs and heating clocks in our buildings!

I grew up in Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire then Rosyth, Fife

Where have you lived?

Kilbarchan , Fife, Venice & Dunkeld

What is your favourite film/book?

I enjoy films but one which I haven’t watched for many years and is my favourite, is the Italian film by Roberto Begnini called "Life Is Beautiful"

So many books, narrowed down I would say "The shed that fed a million children" by Magnus Macfarlane Barrow closely followed by the Morris Minor Haynes Manual!

What is your favourite piece of music? Mostly classical, Rossini - William Tell Overture stands out for me

What is your favourite place?

(Apart from Here of course!)

Dunkeld of course will always be where the rainbow ends for me, but I could rough it in Tortola British Virgin Islands as this was the first Caribbean port I ever visited

How long have you been involved in the church –here and elsewhere?

About twelve years in Dunkeld, Sporadic attendance onboard the P&O Cruise fleet - Interdenominational Sunday services, Youth group in Fife, "me being a youth once upon a time!”

What changes have you seen in that time?

Churches in general tend to be more welcoming now, however, in general there is a decline in younger members

What are your hopes for the future (of the Kirk)?

The Kirk is already doing excellent work implementing strategies for wider community engagement, small groups of people looking at specific areas, Mission and Education, Pastoral care etc and I would like this to grow and be successful

June at Loch of the Lowes

After a welcome abundance of new growth, bird activity and colourful blossom throughout May, June brings the longest hours of daylight This is the time to grow food and enjoy the outdoors Summer Solstice falls on Wednesday 23rd June in the northern hemisphere Remember those dark days of the Winter Solstice in December? In June we have approx 10 hours more light!

Scotland’s long hours of daylight is one of the main reasons ospreys and other migrating birds choose to join us for their breeding season At Loch of the Lowes, our ospreys have been incubating 3 eggs which, at the time of writing, should be hatching soon (mid May) (Touching wood) if all goes well we can enjoy the antics of chicks in the nest throughout June

Did you enjoy hearing cuckoos, are they still around? Do you have swallows or swifts? Are you seeing nesting birds in your gardens or on walks? There will be fluttering, gawky fledglings in June so please keep them safe from dogs (and people) if they’re not yet able to fly, they just need time Please remain aware of the dangers of avian flu and always wash your hands thoroughly after any contact with birds or bird feeders Loch of the Lowes has three great events in June

New: The very first Beaver Breakfast Friday 23rd June – a very early morning event to experience wildlife responding to dawn as it spreads over the loch Fabulous opportunity with our ranger by your side while you observe and hear the breaking of a new day What better way to start the day than in a lochside Hide, enjoying coffee/tea, croissants and spectacular views to the east as the first rays gild the sky Booking essential (see below)

Beaver Watch Wednesday 28th June – the first of our summer evening Beaver Watches held at Lowes Come along for a Talk about beavers in our Crannog Hide with the opportunity to see these large newly re-introduced native animals Booking essential (see below)

Tracks and Signs Friday 30th June – we are delighted to have Dan Puplett, naturalist extraordinaire, coming to Lowes for a whole day event Learn from his wealth of knowledge how to spot and interpret tracks and signs to connect to nature and discover the lives and habits of our local wildlife Booking is essential

To Book any of the above events – online visit, https://scottishwildlifetrust org uk/things-to-do/wildlifeevents/ or call Loch of the Lowes: 01350 727337

Community Noticeboard

Dear Editor,

Further to my previous correspondence on this subject, the last published in your October 2022 edition page 13, in which I informed you that 1 the gate would be removed from the bridge ; 2 walkers would have unrestricted access at their own risk through the broken path area; 3 the broken path would not be repaired; 4 each side of the break would have a series of advance warning signs and low barriers, the signs to show ' Warning', difficult pathway use at own risk ' 5 trees which had fallen across the path and those in a dangerous situation would be attended to by FLS During the following months going into winter, when work at the site would be potentially hazardous, sporadic work was carried out viz fallen trees removed, large roots across path removed, etc but path still closed due to the iron gate on the bridge On 8th April, following a holiday, I went to the site to find all changed Leaving from the car park at the south side of the Braan River, I found a sign had been placed which said, ' path dangerous, not advised ' Additionally the sketch map showing the routes of the walking paths about that area had been altered to delete the path from the car park to the bridge ( and this was a Core Path) Further in, the next forewarning sign showed ' DANGER' and under neath 'Risk of Death' along with the following ' A landslip has occurred ahead ' 'This section is now extremely unstable and dangerous It is advised you do not continue ahead ' Going on, I found at the break in the path a further sign, this time painted red, which again showed ' DANGER' ' Risk of Death' and the descriptive sentence I was accompanied by son Ewen and we crossed the break and found that the gate had been removed from the bridge For us, used to walking hill ground, it was an easy scramble across the break, and it was all too obvious that others before us had also crossed as the path was becoming well troddenincluding those with bicycles, the signs there for all to see For my part I note that the shift from advisory signs warning that the path is ' Difficult' to a sign on a red background saying 'Risk of Death, is quite dramatic

To be honest, I feel more at risk crossing the A9 to turn north to go to the Hermitage, than I do crossing this hill path When we were leaving the site on this recent visit, we met a mature lady and gentleman, walkers with rucksacks, who it transpired were from the Lake District and who had crossed the break They asked us about the signs at the break, and when told, answered " but that is what we expect in the Lake District"

I have to say that it would be better to have the path improved for the very short distance of the break and think that a small squad with pick and shovel would do the job relatively easily

The Meeting Place

We had a very successful coffee morning in April in aid of the Dunkeld in Bloom Committee who do so much work in Dunkeld and Birnam to keep the borders and gardens looking good for the benefit of everyone, visitors and locals alike

In May we supported the Christian Aid committee when they had their book stalls at the Duchess Anne Thanks to Joan Cameron and a group of helpers there was a Coronation Afternoon Tea, also in Duchess Anne on the afternoon of the Coronation

Our usual Friday mornings are from 10-12 in the Duchess Anne where you are assured of lovely home baking along with a cup of tea or coffee and some company There is no charge but donations are welcome

During the Art Exhibition in August, St Mary’s Church in Birnam has offered to host the weekly coffee mornings, please come along and join us either at Duchess Anne or St Mary’s

Notes from a Councillor 17

We are well in to the month of May and there is still no sign of the sunshine making any meaningful appearance Let’s hope that the rest of the year will be kinder to us

Council business continues to gather pace, especially for us in the Strathtay ward The A9 continues to dominate our inboxes as the work for the Cross Tay Link Road (CTLR) progresses with the subsequent road restrictions and contraflow system It is very much a case of short term pain for long term gain, so a degree of patience will be required for the inevitable delays, especially during busy periods People are looking for local diversions to avoid joining the queues, which in turn is causing real issues in the surrounding villages, such as Luncarty, Pitcairngreen and Almondbank We are working with our roads team and also with BAM Nutall to request road safety measures be put in place to try and alleviate the problems

The A9 continues to be one of the most dangerous roads in Scotland and it is very disappointing that the dualling of the A9 has been delayed indefinitely Claire Baillie McLaren and myself proposed a notice of motion at the recent full Council meeting to ask the Leader of the Council to write to Transport Scotland and Kevin Stewart, Minister for Transport, requesting an urgent review of road safety particularly the Dunkeld A9 junction consideration is given to the installation of control measures such as a roundabout or traffic lights to allow all road users to exit, enter or cross the A9 road

The motion was passed unanimously and the leader of the Council agreed that he will formulate a letter along the other two ward Councillors to request a meeting with the transport minister to discuss the issues

As usual, I don’t run dedicated surgeries but I am happy to react, help and advise at any time My email remains ijames@pkc gov uk and my phone number is 07557815546

Best regards, Ian James
