So we have been named the Sunday Times best place to live in Scotland! A very well-deserved title me thinks When the journalist from the Times radio station contacted me for help identifying some ‘interesting people’ in the area to interview I was only too well aware of our embarrassment of riches Scott was back from Uni and I asked him what he thought “Everyone’s Interesting Mum” he said – and of course he is right So let’s share the accolade equally and do everything we can to live up the crown bestowed on us Thank you, Sunday Times It was exciting to be at the opening of our new Multi Use Games Area down at the Rec Many of us has been waiting years for a covered, lit sporting facility in the community and it was wonderful to be there to see this vision become a reality Already the MUGA has attracted new members and is leading to new clubs starting up – if you are interested in joining or finding out more about what the facility can offer you read the article on p5
Spring is on the way - not just in the hedgerows but also the activity of the Dunkeld and Birnam in Bloom team who do so much to make our village look so colourful Please note (P16) that there is a coffee morning on Friday 28th to raise funds for this year’s activities May I take this opportunity to thank Linda Speirs for all her work chairing our In Bloom group over the years – leading the team to many recognised awards As she says in the article on page 15 she will continue to be involved in the group and we look forward to seeing her around and about our wonderful pots and borders
One of the areas the ‘In Bloom’ team have been very active is St Ninians Garden I was in there just the other day thinking how it has been transformed over the years With Progression Bikes opening their new shop and Kat and Kat moving in as well it seems St Ninians will become an even more pleasant part of the village to spend time in Please note a couple of requests for donations: Firstly does anyone have fiddles or accordions they can donate to the newly formed Traditional Music Youth group (see page 4) Many thanks to Karys Watt and Gill Hunter for getting this new group going I’m looking forward to hearing many a fine tune drifting out of Birnam Arts on a summers evening
Secondly please can you go through your bookshelves and see if there are any books you can donate to the Christian Aid bookstalls due to be held in May (see page 10) Books can be dropped off at the meeting place on Friday mornings or left in bags in the wooden shed outside the Duchess Ann
And the last piece of good news – our first Osprey is back (see p15) Isn’t that wonderful news? Its hard to imagine how many towns and villages they fly over between Africa and here before dropping into their old pad in the top of the Scots Pine at Loch of the Lowes They, like the rest of us, are what makes this place so special – it’s just a shame that the journalist was a little to early to interview those ‘interesting’ feathered members of our community

Dunkeld, Birnam & District Community Development Trust Update:
As we outlined in the last Bridge, the Development Trust is now up and running
At present, we’re concentrating on meeting the many groups which make our community such a warm friendly place to live, and to offer our help with administration and fundraising Some groups are struggling to find office bearers to do the administration and this is an area where the Trust could offer support from our Community Coordinator, Beth Beazley, who is now a very familiar figure to many of you, through her work with Men’s Shed, Repair Cafe, Lunch Club and the Warm spaces project in Birnam Arts
We are planning an open day in Birnam Arts to celebrate Volunteer Week in June Beth will be contacting all the community groups to invite them to have a stall at the Fayre, where they can display their activities and recruit new members We hope this will be a fun day to celebrate with the many wonderful volunteers who do so much for our community We are also working with some of the groups identified in our priorities The Community Archive, which is buzzing with ideas and projects, has an ambitious but essential plan for an extension to safely accommodate all the heritage documents and photographs This is well worth a visit if you’d like to revisit your childhood, trace your family or find out about the historic village you live in Please support their fundraiser at BA in April - see the notice on the archive page They are compiling an oral history record with the help of senior members of our society and starting an archaeology club for children Volunteers are always welcome in this fascinating place
We liaise with the Care group, considering the needs of different groups, especially with regard to housing and provision of support from carers and volunteers
The Arboretum group has been awarded a grant to upgrade the path from the North Car Park to the Archive, avoiding the busy pavements, and the
National Trust has created an interesting nature friendly play area at the end of the path
As we become more established we hope to be able to provide more help with fundraising and to work with any group which would welcome some support
We welcome new members (no cost) please contact us at: dbdcdt@gmail com for more details
Dunkeld, Birnam and District Community Development Trust" is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) regulated by the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR), Scottish Charity number: SC052156
Housing Action Group
Our priority is to address the problem of affordable housing, which was emphasised by many people who recently attended the meeting in BA about Erigmore
We have asked our local councillors to press the Council to refuse permission for the conversion of residential property into holiday lets, to enable the community to retain the current residential property for our local population We have become aware of Airbnb holiday makers complaining about crying babies in surrounding residential flats They just don’t mix well
We very much recognise that our local economy depends on tourism, but the balance has changed in recent years, as in most of rural Scotland A large proportion of our population is over 75 and we have no accommodation for carers either in their home or in residential care We can no longer provide housing for shop workers, hotel staff, teachers, and tradesmen as our house prices are driven up well above the national average Our retained Fire Service is in jeopardy
This is difficult territory (excuse pun) as so much of our spare land is on the flood plain We would welcome suggestions or offers for plots of land which the Trust could buy, as the only way we can guarantee the allocation of affordable houses to local workers and families is to build and retain control of our houses
We are currently exploring potential small sites with the Council and we are collaborating with the other Highland Perthshire communities who are facing the same problems
We would welcome new members with ideas, skills, or just enthusiasm, not necessarily people directly affected by the housing problem, who are prepared to help Please contact us with any suggestions for land or property which we could develop for our community or to join the group at ph8housing@gmail com
STOP PRESS: We are pleased to report that on 22nd March our local Councillors on the PKC Planning and Placemaking Committee were able to persuade Committee members to reject an application for change of use from residential to short term let for a newly built property in Birnam with original planning permission as a residence
Food Share
The tables at the Duchess Anne and St Mary’s Church seem to be popular and there is hardly ever any waste for composting We collect from the Coop on Monday and Thursday evening Our “haul” very much depends on how busy the shop has been and very occasionally they have nothing to donate @the field are leaving fresh vegetables, which is much appreciated, and we have a wonderful daily contribution from Livvy but you have to be quick off the mark to bag some scones or sandwiches!
We’re also grateful to donors who share any surplus goods they have in their cupboards Everyone is welcome to use this food and stop it going to landfill Many thanks to our enthusiastic teams of volunteers If anyone would like to join the 4 weekly rota please email j silburn@btinternet com
Food Bank
We can provide extra help for anyone who needs it from the donations which are being left in the basket at the Coop counter and from the generous regular donations from St Columba’s

Produced by Vanishing Point
A co-production with An Tobar and Mull Theatre
Spin! is a new show from the team that brought you The Dark Carnival: Unplugged and The Metamorphosis: Unplugged
A woman can hear a voice coming from her brand-new washing machine When she talks to it - to her surprise - it talks back, and it’s surprisingly good conversation The woman and the machine hit it off, but soon it seems that this new high-tech, environmentally friendly best friend knows a little bit too much about her - who her neighbours are, what her husband does for a living and how many children she has It knows what she eats, what brand of toothpaste she uses and who she votes for It’s not long before she is swirling around in a divisive world, and the machine is threatening to do more than air her dirty laundry Spin! is a darkly humorous and satirical show about wishing, washing and information warfare Join us for a great night out of comic theatre, cake and a complimentary (but not compulsory!) drink

Dunkeld and Birnam Sports and Leisure HubCovered MUGA and other news
As you will see from the various photographs in this edition of the Bridge, we had a very successful official opening of the Covered MUGA on 22nd February We had a great turnout from a wide range of supporters- Hub members, funders, Royal School of Dunkeld and local people The funders were very impressed by the facility and we think we could be inundated by requests from other communities wanting to learn more about the project We would particularly like to thank Kate Stansfield for coming to the opening and saying some heartfelt words in recognition of her son, Robbie, and how he would have loved to use the new facility Thanks also to Eilidh Barbour and the St Johnston players for making time in their busy schedules to cut the ribbon
The MUGA continues to be very well used throughout the week There will probably be less use of the MUGA by football teams over the summer so this is an ideal opportunity for others- netballers, basketballers, fitness classes, badminton players or hockey players- to use the facility Bookings can be made online at:
https://clubspark lta org uk/DunkeldandBirnamSportsandLeisureHub/Booking/Boo kByDate#?date=2023-03-16&role=guest or via the Booker app
We have recently installed a few additional features at the MUGA and are progressing plans to improve the car parking which will be a benefit to members, locals and visitors alike We would like to make a plea to all users to keep to a VERY SLOW speed when coming into or leaving the MUGA as the road is shared between pedestrians, cyclists and cars
We are planning the Hub AGM which will be on 18th April 2023 at 7 30pm in the clubhouse and by Zoom The Hub is the umbrella organisation which runs and manages the clubhouse and MUGA and has oversight of the tennis courts and bowling green If you are interested in attending the AGM please drop a note to dbsportsleisurehub@gmail com
We have had a large number of people joining the MUGA since the opening in December Existing and new members need to join for the new membership year starting on 1st April 2023- please join online at: https://clubspark lta org uk/DunkeldandBirnamSportsandLeisureHub/Membership/Join, send an email to dbsportsleisurehub@gmail com or phone 01350 700 017 if you require assistance
There are various categories of membership to suit everyone We have tried to keep the costs as low as possible- essentially to meet the running cost of the facility- with under 16s and those in full time education being free Once you have paid for membership there is no further cost for using the facility
You can join as an individual or family member of the MUGA Note that MUGA membership is only open to people living in the PH8 area plus surrounding areas to Pitlochry, Aberfeldy, Murthly, Caputh, Spittalfield and Bankfoot Non members are very welcome to book the facility by paying the hourly fee
Or you can join the tennis club either with or without MUGA membership Or you can join the bowling club with our without MUGA membership Or even bowls plus tennis plus MUGA if you are very keen!
We are looking for feedback on any aspects of the Hub and for people to join the management committee so please drop a note to dbsportsleisurehub@gmail com if you are interested
Highland Perthshire Clay Shooting Club
In the old days before COVID I occasionally wrote a short piece for this magazine It was always on the exploits of members of Highland Perthshire clay shooting club We used to congregate at County Clays shooting ground in the foothills north of Dunkeld We would shoot at a few flying targets then chat a bit before moving on to another set of targets, shooting, then chat a bit more It is unfair of me to write “shoot at” some members would often hit most of the targets and come away with a trophy or two by the end of the season I was not one of them I most often shoot where the targets had been a moment or two before But the company was good and there was always next time The wind wouldn’t be so strong, or the sun may not get in my eyes like it had done
Things have changed since COVID is less in control of our lives but Russia has invaded Ukraine Many people and families have been shattered Things are tricky in the far east too and I don’t seem to have done as much as I should have to stop global warming
Fortunately our small club continues to shoot once each month We are hosted by County Clays as usual Those top scorers are still top scorers Mind you I did scare them a little about a year or so ago when I hit 33 out of 50 I think they glanced over their shoulders momentarily wondering if I was going to come all the way into the forties But that is in the past now Thankfully the chatter is still going on, in fact it is better than ever

Breadalbane & District
Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA)
With the days now drawing out and warmer weather on the way the group is busy preparing for the start of Riding on April 24th Unfortunately because we operate on Mondays we are losing two days due to the May bank holiday followed by the King’s coronation holiday
Schools are being contacted to assess who may be our riders and also the owners of ponies to make sure they are still available to us Very sadly one of our much loved four legged friends had to be put down recently due to a recurring illness During the winter months some of the coaches have visited other groups with indoor arenas to get new ideas etc and a Volunteers handbook is being devised as an aid and reference point We have two training sessions for volunteers planned before the start of riding and Petra Humphrey (our regional coach) is coming to guide us at the second one
We now have our own new web-site breadalbanerda org uk where you can read about the group and see some photos of activities Also we have our own email address: breadalbanerda@gmail com
We are always looking to recruit new volunteers and anyone interested can use the above addresses or contact directly: Helen on 01796 470414 or Vicky on 07786262329 (SC047991)

Community First Responders –
Dunkeld, Birnam and surrounds
Community First Responders are volunteers who are trained by the Scottish Ambulance Service to attend certain types of emergency calls in the area where they live or work Their aim is to reach a potential lifethreatening emergency in the first vital minutes before the ambulance crew arrives Their role is to help stabilise the patient and provide the appropriate care until the more highly skilled ambulance crew arrives on scene to take over the treatment They are usually based in rural communities where ambulance crews have longer to travel to the patient
There is a gap in Community First Responder provision in the area of Dunkeld, Birnam and surrounds Previous calls for interest in The Bridge have seen a number of people come forward to volunteer to be trained up as Community First Responders, or to support how a dedicated unit in our community could be organised The Scottish Ambulance Service recommend that lines are kept separate between those who might oversee the running of a unit, and those who would be trained up to respond to incidents
An initial meeting of those interested in the community was held in January, with a more focused session –including the Scottish Ambulance Service - taking place
in person in Birnam Arts on 13 March 2023 As a result, we have a nucleus of interested people, but we need more people to come forward to volunteer - If you are interested in either exploring training as a First Responder, or considering how you might be able to help by being on a committee, or volunteering in other ways, please get in touch with Graeme Cook on 07904 411624 or email: dunkeldandbirnamsafety@gmail com
Next steps for those who express an interest will be a further meeting in April to consider formal establishment of a unit, and how we might begin training

Poem
What words can we say To the doctors I declare
Only we are grateful
Yes that they are there
It’s good if we don’t need them
But good that we do know
That when the chips are down
To them we can go
I have known the doctors so long
Both now and in the past
It’s an association
That so long has last
So from all of us the patients
And this is so true
To the Dunkeld doctors
And the staff a big thankyou

Thought for the Month
Oh for goodness sake, when will winter stop and summer be here I find myself laying in my nice warm bed most mornings, cup of tea in hand and my prayer book beside me and, during the dark mornings of winter, I just want to stay there; all day I have these little thoughts about hibernating, eating too much chocolate, and only getting out of the bed for necessary events – reader understand However I then begin to think about what I would miss if in fact I did stay in my bed until winter was over
The snow , the wild geese flying in formation over my cottage, the chats around neighbours fires, candle light, Christmas, bringing in the tree, dancing at a proper highland Hogmanay, woolly jumpers and enormous socks that keep me cosy when out walking the dogs Sunsets at 3:30 pm all beautifully red and, in its colour, prophesying the next day’s cold temperatures Those and a myriad of other winter blessings play as memories in my mind And so, what to be done but arise and face the chilly floor and get some heating on The winter will never last in reality, it gives way to spring and lambs , and, lambing snow noooooooooo but spring , how majestically it pushes away the dark and cold and insists upon bringing glorious colour to the fields and trees, and once more the geese and other birds fly across our skies in search of mates and food The days lengthen and by Easter the sun sets at the heady time of 8 pm, the fire doesn’t need to be lit as often, and the woolly jumpers make way for less ‘puffy’ clothing My journey back and forth along the A9 between Birnam and Ault na goire, is a real joy in the day light and as night falls the temperature is a little less harsh when I stand looking at the stars
I realise that I don’t want summer to come along too fast, I want to enjoy the spring whist it is with us, it brings Holy Week to reflect within and Easter day to delight me as we St Mary’s proclaim: He is risen, He is risen indeed Hallelujah
Therefore my friends, tomorrow morning I might just get up from my cosy bed, and enjoy what is to come

Who’s who in the Parish Church?
Hazel Murch became organist at Dunkeld Parish Church in September 2018 and is well known to many folk in this area through her teaching career and involvement with groups like the Strathspey & Reel Society She has kindly agreed to be the subject of this month’s ‘Who’s Who in the Parish ’
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Central Region as my Dad was an industrial chemist with ICI in Grangemouth Our family settled in Larbert where my Dad still lives
Where have you lived?
I lived in Glasgow for my 4 years at university After getting married, Gordon and I lived in Aberfeldy for 25 years adding 3 boys to our family during our time there We moved to Luncarty in 2007
What is your favourite film/book?
My favourite book is All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Duerr
What is your favourite piece of music?
Oh goodness, I have a number of pieces that I go to depending on my mood I return often to Handel's Concerto Grosso Op 6 However I also like the Scissor Sisters 'I don’t feel like dancing' which I use as motivational music for housework which I do occasionally!!
What is your favourite place?
(Apart from Here of course!)
Favourite place- The North Beach on Iona
How long have you been involved in the church –here and elsewhere?
I have been involved in church most of my life I was involved in an active church in Larbert when I was young I also have played the organ since I was 16 After the death of our oldest son, Andrew, there was a significant period of my life when I was not involved in church at all My strand of faith was stretched but not broken The support of friends, the Aberfeldy community, the worship in Iona Abbey, the liturgy of the Episcopal Church and the warmth of welcome at Dunkeld along with many individuals have been significant in my spiritual path
What changes have you seen in that time?
In church I think services are more relaxed and there are fewer people Change in my own life has primarily been to accept mystery and not need answers
What are your hopes for the future of the Kirk?
My hope for the future of the church is that the message of the deep love of God for everyone is lived

Christians Against Poverty
Five ways to improve your mental wellbeing in 2023
With the cost of living crisis, rising food prices and energy bills shooting up, we all need a little help to stay positive and look after our mental health right now And as we approach Mental Health Awareness Week next month (15-21 May), it’s a great time to rethink how we can all look after ourselves and each other
Have a chat and a brew
As the saying goes, a problem shared is a problem halved, and it’s true Take a few minutes away from the rush and open up to a trusted friend or family member about how you’re feeling It can be a great way to relieve stress, get a fresh perspective and find clarity Brew optional
Reflect on the good stuff
Everyone has moments when it feels like everything is falling apart, and when you’re in that place it's really tough to be thankful for anything Taking the time to identify the good things in our lives, no matter how small, can provide us with a greater sense of perspective and help us develop a longer term view about our current situation Why not take some time each day to write down a few things you’re grateful for? This can help to shift your attention over time, help you disconnect from toxic or negative emotions, and it will give you something to look back on in those challenging moments
Set small mental health goals
In our busy, chaotic lives, mental wellbeing often drops down the priority list, and it can end up becoming a bigger problem as a result We all know that fresh air, exercise, healthy eating, budgeting your money well,
laughing, dancing, getting creative or joking with friends are wonderful ways to improve our mental wellbeing, but unless we allocate specific time to do these things, they often don’t happen Don’t be afraid to book time for self-care into your calendar on your phone or write it down Consistency is key, so aim to make it a part of your regular routine, no matter how busy you are
Lift up others
You aren’t alone We all face our own individual battles in life but we can work together to support each other, and this can help improve our own wellbeing too Emotions and actions spread When someone is kind, encouraging and compassionate, it gives people around them a lift and the environment becomes more upbeat as a result Aim to pay at least one compliment or encouragement to someone every day to give them, and yourself, a boost
Ask for help
Asking for help can be really tough Many of us want to feel like we can handle things on our own, but there’s no shame in seeking support, and it can make a massive difference Whether you’re asking for support with your mental health, advice on completing a practical task or guidance around your finances, there’s plenty of help available
Christians Against Poverty (CAP) offers free support to people struggling financially Visit capuk org to find out more about the help we offer

Dunkeld and Birnam in Bloom
Dunkeld and Birnam in Bloom Water Wynd boxes Can you help keep our villages In Bloom?
Below are photos of planters which were made about ten years ago and are situated in Water Wynd Each planter contains a miniature acer and seasonal bulbs or begonias They have lasted well and are much admired and photographed by visitors, especially when the begonias are in full flower However, they are now needing to be replaced and one has already disintegrated and had to be removed
We hope there might be a group or individual in the community willing to make replacements There are nine planters in all, size currently 1m long at rear, 64cm at front, 45 at sides and 35cm high However, the replacements would not have to be identical to thiswe would discuss any proposed design and are happy to do a “site visit”! If recycled wood could be used, that would be ideal Failing that, we would provide suitable timber Please phone either Linda Speirs 727288 or Linda Wolfe 727621 if you or a group you are involved in would be interested in helping with this project Many thanks ” Committee Changes at In Bloom I wish to give notice of my resignation from my position as chairperson of Dunkeld and Birnam in Bloom from the 11th April 2023 ( AGM )
I would like to thank everyone who nominated me for the position, continued to nominate me for many years, and have given me years of support I have enjoyed my time as chairperson and intend to continue to be active within the club, but feel the time has come for me to step down and let someone new take the reins Dunkeld and Birnam in Bloom has always worked as a team, incorporating many ideas both from within the group and the wider village We currently have 11-13 helpers between Birnam and Dunkeld, and liaise with other groups/clubs within the village
I will be here to support the incoming Chairperson, with any information required regarding planting to date, contacts, etc from what I have learned over the years if needed!

April at Loch of the Lowes
Stop Press :
Our female Osprey NC0 has safely returned on the morning 17th March
April is a very busy month for wildlife! Buds are bursting, birds are singing and our longer hours of daylight mean growth and activity in wildlife This is the time for young mammals to be born and birds to pair up and nest, many producing eggs or even chicks before the month is out
Saturday 1st April, 10 30am-4 30pm, Optics Fair with Viking Opticals Come along and see and try out a wide range of binoculars and scopes, with expert advice from the Viking Representative Saturday 22nd April Fighting Wildlife Crime, a talk from Tayside Wildlife Crime Liaison Officer Blair Wilkie to find out how wildlife crime is being tackled locally and how we can all support their work
On mild and sunny days we’ve already been seeing amazing courtship displays from great crested grebes and goldeneye, only interrupted by spells of unusually low temperatures when winter seems to be fighting back – before spring takes over again
Traditionally, ospreys return to Loch of the Lowes by the end of March and will be preparing their nest in readiness for eggs in April The arrival back in Scotland for ospreys, as with many of our migratory birds, can be heavily influenced by weather patterns Why fly beak first into strong north-easterlies when you can wait for a tail wind from the south to aid your flight? At the time of writing, our ospreys are not with us but it is very early days and we hope by the time you read this, an osprey or two will be in residence
As we’ve done every year since 1969, Scottish Wildlife Trust staff and volunteers will protect these stunning birds in a 24/7 Osprey Watch
Throughout April, Loch of the Lowes Visitor Centre will be open 7 days a week, 10 30-17 00 No need to book, just come on up! Please note, there is no path around the loch and no access to the water It is essential to keep dogs under control and on leads in the Spring countryside and keep to paths, both on the woodland trail at Lowes and across the land NB only assistance dogs are allowed in the Visitor Centre As well as protecting farmers livestock, there are ground nesting birds, vulnerable young red squirrels, butterfly eggs, insects and newly sprouting plants just starting their lives Loch of the Lowes is one of over 100 Scottish Wildlife Trust reserves across Scotland
Dunkeld
and Birnam Walking
Meeting – 24 February 2023
councillors - Grant Laing, Claire McLaren and Ian James, plus officials from Traffic and Transport, and Greenspace from Perth and Kinross Council in attendance The meeting took the same format as that held exactly one year earlier - this time picking up on the areas PKC had promised action on last year - and following a route from North Car Park, round the square, over the Bridge and finishing off at Chattan Tea Room A huge thank you to Kelly and the team at Chattan for such a warm welcome - and to the Community Council for covering costs
During the meeting there were many discussions around how the community can help PKC prioritise particular measures, but there were three specific areas agreed as 'no brainers' by PKC These were:
The Zebra crossing is not fit for purpose – it is routinely flaunted and as it is used more by children and others heading to the MUGA, it must be replaced with a more effective traffic management (traffic lights) and pedestrian crossing system – including measures which physically slow traffic down;
The junction at the school must be rectified to allow traffic management (traffic lights and pedestrian crossings), again with physical measures slowing traffic down on Perth Road
20mph remains a policy ambition for PKC - but they are waiting to see whether urban 20mph will be rolled out nationally - this could be something for the community council or others to keep a focus on
The meeting was felt to be positive and productiveone immediate impact was council officials asking for Community Council input into where speed monitoring strips should go - this allowed the issues of speeding through outlying settlements, and other key sites to be worked on right away The contracts for this work have now been let There were other separate conversations during the meeting - individual council officers have agreed to talk further about locations of dropped kerbs, and there are ongoing discussions about improving paths in our community
A report was produced following the walking meeting last year – this is available for all to see on The Bridge website – and an update report will be produced following this second annual meeting We would ask that everyone puts a note in their diary for the third annual walking meeting, to again review progress - 23 February 2024

Notes from a Councillor 17
The pace of life at 2 High Street has slowed down slightly as the Council has delivered both its revenue and capital budget for 2023-24
This process started in October 2022 and the Perth and Kinross Council budget is dependent on many variables outwith our control, with the situation fluctuating weekly, if not daily I am content with the totality of the budgets that were approved by Council on 1 March 2023
This was my first budget as the SNP Administration Leader, and I can assure you that no decision was taken lightly When I became Leader of Perth and Kinross Council, I said I wanted to work with elected members of all political groups to get the best outcomes for Perth and Kinross Council residents On budget day, I accepted useful proposals from all of the other political groups into our budget This collegiate working results in better decisions and I will continue to work with all of those within the chamber moving forward
I enjoyed the “walk round” Dunkeld and Birnam with Perth and Kinross Council officers, residents and others to discuss the traffic and pedestrian issues in the area Along with Councillor James and Bailie McLaren, I have already met road safety officers to discuss issues in Ward 5 and we will work jointly to keep Dunkeld and Birnam at the top of the priority list for mitigating actions
Dunkeld and Birnam Community Council have put out a request for more locals to put themselves forward to be co-opted on to the Community Council If you are interested, I would urge you to contact them to help represent your community
Moving further afield, I am looking forward to the long awaited Bankfoot to Murthly (Stewart Tower road) improvements alongside the improvements of the link road between Stanley and the A9 which are scheduled for this year
As I write, I am looking forward to the clocks moving forward this weekend and the arrival of “my” swallows that have visited and nested in my garage for many years Their arrival and departure are very poignant annual moments for me
Have a great Summer

Like everyone, day to day life continues that requires our individual attention That’s the reason that the March community council meeting was our first formal meeting of the year That said, the members of the community council have been busy behind the scenes on an ever-increasing number of issues confronting our community
Without question the subject that has focused much of our attention is that of planning applications I should state upfront that the community council will be reluctant to comment on individual applications that have no direct affect on the wider community Only where a site has previous conditions set by professional bodies and PKC will we make a submission We will focus our attention on all applications that have the possibility of affecting the community in both a positive and negative way In such situations we will seek comments opinions from as wide a selection of individuals as is possible to reach a balanced view Recent planning applications concerning our community are good examples where we have engaged with the public and submitted comments
We will shortly be updating our planning application guidance which will be available on the Bridge website for all to see
Another subject that we have been focusing on in the past 3 months is roads, speeding, parking and snow
Pete Wishart MP: Member of Parliament for Perth and North Perthshire pete.wishart.mp@parliament.uk
clearance The community council are fully supportive of the work done by the A9 Action Group which has been putting pressure on the Scottish Government and Transport Scotland to take action to advance the dualling project and look seriously at installing roundabouts at the junctions within our area
The second walking meeting of Dunkeld and Birnam took place on 24th February this year The tour was well attended by members of the community council, PKC councillors and officials, the Deputy First Minister and local residents A report on what was discussed during the tour is in progress and hopefully will be available in the coming weeks There is evidence that our concerns are being noted and we’re heartened by the language we’re hearing from PKC officials We hope to see some tangible action on a number of items and will continue to liaise closely with the authorities in the coming months
The current membership of the community council is currently at 50% of the allowed number The burden on members is increasing and we’d like to take this opportunity to call for residents of the community to join us in a worthwhile enterprise If your interested please visit our DBCC Facebook page
