The Garda Siochána Ombudsman is to investigate circumstances around Garda Tony Golden’s death The Garda Siochána Ombudsman Commission have released a statement in the wake of the Prime Time investigation into the circumstances surrounding Garda Tony Golden’s death. The programme which was broadcast on Thursday evening suggested that the man who shot Garda Golden and Siobhan Phillips was a Garda informant. Adrian Crevin Mackin killed Tony Golden on October 11 and seriously injured his girlfriend Siobhán Phillips before killing himself. Garda Golden had ac-

companied Ms Phillips to the home she shared with Mackin after she had given a full statement to Gardaí about a sustained beating he had given her. According to the Primetime investigates programme Mackin was well known to Gardaí before the murder of Garda Golden. Nine months prior to the murder, Mackin had admitted to gun possession and importing materials that could be used in bomb making but had consistently denied IRA membership. Despite this denial the DPP instructed the gardaí to charge him with IRA membership and not with the firearms offences he had admitted to. Continued on Page 2

Man in his 80s is assaulted outside his home 2

Dundalk Leader 26th April 2017

A man in his 80s is recovering after being assaulted during an attempted robbery outside his home. The man was knocked to the ground and his assailant demanded money during the incident in Stabannon on Thursday April 20. Fortunately the man was not injured by was left shaken but the ordeal that happened at 4.30pm Gardai revealed that a man driving a Kildare registered silver Volvo S60 called to the house and told the victim that he was from the ESB and was checking the service in

the area. The man became suspicious and locked his house before walking down his driveway. The assailant followed him and knocked him to the ground before demanding money. He searched his pockets but he was not carrying any cash. The assailant returned to his car and drove off in the direction of Stabannon before the victim raised the alarm with a neighbour. Gardai are appealing to anyone with information to come forward. The Gardai are also investigating two cars

that were set alight over the last week. On April 19 at 11.30pm a car was set alight at Ravensdale Park and such was the damage that the make and model is as yet unknown. A car with the partial number plate of HLZ was seen leaving the area around the same time. Meanwhile on April 23 at 3.30am a green Renault Megane was set alight on Castlegard Rd in Ardee. A female aged 20 was questioned in relation to the discovery of €400 worth of cannabis in a car at Muirhevnamor on April 20. After becoming

suspicious, Gardai approached the car and found the drug with other drug dealing paraphernalia. A file is being sent to the DPP. A man is due to appear in court next month after being found with a kitchen knife concealed on him on the Avenue Road. Gardai are looking for assistance to indentify a man who stole a handbag from a parked car at Salterstown. A woman and children went for a walk on the beach at 11.30am on April 20 and when they returned they saw a tall

youth in a grey hoodie standing at their car. He left in a silver four door saloon – possibly a Skoda or old style Toyota – in the direction of Annagassan. The woman’s handbag along with other items had been taken. Officers are investigating the theft of a trailer and motorbike from the Carrickdale Hotel on April 22 at 8pm. The black Suzuki motorbike was on the back of a trailer that was taken by a grey Nissan Torino jeep. It was driven off by a man in a light blue T-shirt in the direction of Jonesboro.

There was a huge turnout at St Vincent’s Secondary school in Dundalk to welcome the annual cycle against suicide which left Dundalk on Monday morning. The 14-day cycle started out from Dublin on Sunday and arrived in Dundalk on Sunday evening where the participating cyclists stayed the night. On Monday morning they gathered in St Vincent’s Secondary School gym where radio personality Colm Hayes spoke to the students about the importance of ‘Cycle Against Suicide’ and how it is important to talk about suicide and depression and breaking the cycle of suicide.

Cyclists prepare to set off for Newry on Monday morning

St Vincent’s students as well as some teachers added their support to the cause by getting on their bikes and joining the cyclists as they left Dundalk. The Dundalk contingent went as far

as Newry before returning home. Cycle Against Suicide is an initiative started by Irish entrepreneur, Jim Breen, as a result of his appearance on RTE’s The Secret Millionaire

programme. The main objective of the Cycle is to raise awareness of the considerable help and supports that are available for anyone battling depression, self harm, at risk of suicide or those

bereaved by suicide. The Cycle Against Suicide community is determined to let people in every corner of the island of Ireland know that: it’s OK not to feel OK; and it’s absolutely

OK to ask for help. The 2017 Cycle will take place between Sunday, April 23rd and Saturday, May 6th, 2017. This is the Fifth Cycle and it is expected to be the biggest one yet.

Investigation into death of Garda Golden From Page 1 In the wake of the Primetime investigates programme, GSOC released a statement last Friday which stated that they have been investigating the circumstances leading up to and including the death of Garda Golden, and what it describes as the “apparent self-inflicted death of Adrian Crevan Mackin and the serious wounding of Síobhan Phillips”. The scope of the investigation which was launched late last year will focus on: -whether Gardaí acted appropriately upon their knowledge of the access to or possession of explosives and firearms by Mackin. -the extent of interactions between Gardaí and Mackin. -whether Siobhan and her family were treated properly by all Garda members. -whether there was a delay in reviewing the circumstances sur-

GSOC said in a statement: "Full and timely co-operation of the Garda Síochána and other organisations will be critical to the effectiveness and progress of this important investigation. Castletown Belles FC who are competing in the Dublin Women’s Soccer League

Castletown Belles FC need players C as t l e t o w n Belles Football Club are on the lookout for new players to join their squad ahead of their second season in the Dublin Women’s Soccer League. The team was formed last year by Niall Gallagher who was involved with a host of ladies teams back in the 1990s and is coached by his son Andrew. Last season the Belles entered the Dublin Women’s Soccer League and will do so again this year with the new season just a month away. The team made the headlines last year with their innovative link up with the Irish Kidney Association who feature on the front of their jerseys. However due to a host of withdrawals in the last number

of weeks due to personal commitments the squad is down to the bare bones with just 16 players available to Andrew. And the Belles coach has appealed for anybody interested in playing soccer for the club to get in touch and join the team. “We are currently looking for any girls who are 16 or over to give us a shout and join the Castletown Belles for the 2017 season. There is great camaraderie and a strong bond between the girls and it is a fantastic way of staying fit. We train every Thursday evening between 7 and 8 in Shamrock Football Club’s pitch in Fatima and we are very flexible with regards to people’s commitments to families, work etc.

I know a lot of girls play GAA in town and we’re more than willing to work around their schedules to help them fit in both codes if possible,” explained Andrew. “The league begins in a month’s time but there are a couple of competitive pre-season games before that against Dublin teams which are coming up very shortly. As I say we currently have 16 players available for selection but ideally we’d have about 20 to ensure we are able to field a full team each week,” added the Belles coach. Anybody interested in becoming a Castletown Belle they can send a message to Andrew on the official Castletown Belles FB page or email to cbellesfc@gmail.com.

Commemoration for Jim Craven This month sees the 37th commemorative anniversary of the Bard of Balregan, poet Jim Craven. Craven produced pure lyric and nature poetry that was at once spiritual and spontaneous. His utterances and images were inspired and unique, running the gamut of themes and emotions. The Craven committee will also pay tribute to Jim’s close friends and collaborators who passed away over the last year including William ‘Willie’ Treacy, Dermot ‘Doc’ Lavery and Professor Dan Casey, US. These Craven enthusiasts ensured his memory would not fade and his words would soar in perpetuity. Graveside Commemoration takes place after 7.30pm Mass in Bridge-A-Crinn, this coming Friday, April 28. All are welcome to listen and partake as poetry will be recited to the wind and memories shared. Jim’s poetry has touched the hearts of people far and wide and that was shown once more recently when the Craven committee received a letter from a schoolteacher in London describing how Craven’s poetry had touched and inspired his students in a way he had not expected. Steve Conroy, a teacher in Malmesbury Primary School in

London had been introduced to Jim Craven’s poetry by a family friend and decided to introduce the poet to his nine and ten year olds in his school. “I was so taken by the children’s reaction to Mr Craven’s poetry and the quality of their work that I have decided to use his poetry again this year, in particular, the beautiful piece, Harvest Moon. I can’t wait to see the results! “My only wish is that I could take the children to the Louth countryside which clearly inspired Mr Craven so much, so that they too could look, smell, touch, listen and also be inspired by its beauty. All the very best for the celebration and kind regards,” stated Steve in his letter to the Craven committee.

Marathon at St Peter’s NS

THE pupils and staff at St Peter’s NS in Dromiskin are gearing themselves for a huge undertaking on Friday next April 28 at the School grounds. This unique fundraiser will be held to generate funds for the proposed new two-classroom extension which is required to host all the extra pupils who now attend the school. A Marathon (26.216ml) commences at 9.15pm which will involve all the pupils and staff members each taking in a section of the course. Following a break a number of pupils will do their best to create a World Record Attempt during the course of one hour (1pm - 2pm). Both events are ‘ weather conditional’ but hopefully conditions will be ideal on the day. An OB unit from Dundalk FM will attend and do live coverage in their

Lunchtime show on the day. All parents, friends of the school and the public are welcome to attend and a wide range of unique prizes will be raffled among all supporters and sponsors at the conclusion of the competitions. Former Louth player David McComish and staff member is the “anchor man” for the day and principal Pat Mulligan has no doubt that the full day will be a great success. Mr Mulligan points out that local support for all school ventures is excellent and that the Parents Committee and all Parents / Friends who assist and encourage Dromiskin School Fundraisers at all times deserve great credit. “Their contributions are invaluable and we are looking forward to meeting as many as possible on Friday.”

Assault case arose due “I’m in Pain” Can Chiropractic Help Me? to a family dispute A man and woman who were charged with assault arising out of a family dispute had their case dismissed at Dundalk District Court after the judge described the case as being childish and a waste of Garda resources. Stephen Grimes (26) of 237 Greefield Court, Tom Bellew Avenue, and Lorna Mulligan (32) of 107 Marian Park were charged with assaulting Mr Grime’s cousin, Aine Breen, on February 24 last year. After Judge John Coughlan heard evidence of bad feeling in the family he dismissed the case and warned those involved that he did not want to see them in court again. “I am telling everyone that if

anyone comes before me again I will refuse jurisdiction and send the case to the Circuit Court. This is childish and a total waste of Garda resources. “This sort of rubbish will have to stop. I don’t want to see these cases in court again”, he warned. Ms Breen gave evidence that she was going for a walk on the date in question from her home in O’Hanlon Park to the Laurels when Mr Grimes and Ms Mulligan passed in a car. She then saw her cousin, Mr Grimes, running towards her and he began hitting her in the face. Ms Mulligan then struck her and also bit her ear before a man came along and the assault ended. Ms Breen stated that she suf-

fered bruising to her face, back and knee, while she also requires stitches to her ear. It was put to Ms Breen that Ms Mulligan had claimed she had been banging on the car, but she stated that she didn’t do anything to provoke the incident. At that point Judge Coughlan asked about the nature of the ongoing feud and was told that it involved an aunt of the cousins, while Ms Mulligan’s sister was now in a relationship with Aine Breen’s former partner. After reading further details of the feud that were contained in statements, Judge Coughlan stated that he was dismissing the case on its merits and issued a stern warning to all involved.

Aoife McComish has qualified for the world championships

A local girl who only took up clay shooting two years ago has shown she is a natural at the sport having qualified for the forthcoming World Championships in England this July. Aoife McComish from Muirhevnamór in Dundalk took up the sport two years ago after being introduced to clay shooting by her boyfriend, Louth Village man Jake Byrne. Jake is a very successful Clay Shooter and has won U21 All Ireland titles as well as representing his country on the international stage. In Aoife’s first year competing she shocked seasoned veterans by winning the All Ireland title to truly announce her arrival as one of the finest clay shooters in

the country. This year Aoife decided to try and make the Irish team as she took her place in the qualifiers for the Home Countries International team. She once again excelled finishing top of the list for the qualifiers which meant that not only had she sealed a place on the home countries internatonal team but also for the world championships which take place this July. Aoife is understandably delighted to have qualified for the world championships and is as shocked as anybody at the speed of her progress so far. “To be honest I can’t really believe how far I’ve come in such a short space of time. I only started this two years ago after my boyfriend told me I should give it a go. Jake has been such

a huge help and I honestly wouldn’t be here talking about going to the world championships if it wasn’t for him. The World Championships weren’t even on my mind this year at all to be honest. I had just planned to try out for the home countries tournament and because I did so well during qualifying I was told I had done enough to take my place in the world championships. “It’s a huge honour for me and I can’t wait to test myself against the best in the world and represent my country. Jake is also taking part in the world championships and he has been before so I’ll be able to get plenty of tips and advice from him about the whole process,” stated Aoife.

One drink driving Louth SPCA visits local school fatality is a death too many - Fitzpatrick Fine Gael TD for Louth, Peter Fitzpatrick, has described reports that driving licences were recorded in only four per cent of drink-driving convictions in County Louth as highly alarming. “I am very concerned with the news that only four per cent of driving licences were recorded in drink-driving convictions here in Louth. “Recording the licences of those convicted of drink driving in court should be obligatory. If the drivers licences aren’t recorded how are the courts supposed to apply penalty points or enforce a disqualification? “This oversight needs to be brought to a halt immediately.

Students at Bush Post Primary School were treated to a very interesting talk on one of the county’s busiest and worthwhile charity organisations. The Louth SPCA is a voluntary organisation that specialises in the rescuing and re-homing of abused and abandoned animals. They have been operating in the local area for more than 50 years and the organisations current inspector Fiona Squibb has been at the job for more than 10 years now. Recently she was invited to talk at Bush Post Primary School by 5th year Links module students Jack Maguire, Brendan O’Hagan and David Coyle.

The talk was held on April 4 in one of the school’s IT rooms where Fiona talked to the two attending Links module classes about the work that herself and the Louth SPCA do in the local area. She also answered some of the questions that students had about the work they do at the Louth SPCA and how they might be able to contribute in some way. Fiona pointed out that the Louth SPCA is not an individual organisation as they work in tandem with many similar groups in the local area such as Dundalk Dog Rescue, Hollys Horse Haven in Omeath and local veterinarians. Their shelters located in Walterstown can house 30 dogs and 20 cats but it is usually under maximum capacity because they

successfully re-home most animals within four weeks. The organisation relies upon donations from sponsors and other benefactors to keep the work they do going even though they receive grants from the Department of Agriculture it is still not enough to fully support the work that they do with vets bills, animals to house and feed the animals. If you would also like to help the Louth SPCA you can visit their website www.LouthSPCA. ie where you can donate and find the necessary information to contact them about possibly volunteering some of your time at their shelters or offering to foster one of the animals in their care until they can find a home for it.

A man who hadn’t realised his insurance had lapsed was banned from the road for two years at Dundalk District Court. Kevin Reid of 588 Ashling Park, Dundalk, caused damage estimated at €1,108 when he was involved

in a traffic accident at the Avenue Road on October 31, 2014. Solicitor, Eleanor Kelly, stated that his policy had lapsed ten days earlier and he hadn’t realised. She asked the court to consider a donation to charity to allow him

keep his licence. The court heard that Mr Reid (33) had no previous convictions and that compensation had not been paid. Judge John Coughlan also imposed a €100 fine.

By David Coyle

Didn’t realise insurance policy had lapsed Peter Fitzatrick TD

That it was allowed to happen in the first place is worrying. “Deaths related to drink-driving have been creeping up in recent years after reaching record lows. We cannot allow ourselves to become complacent in our quest to end carnage on our roads.

“One drink driving death is one too many. We need to think about the impact that these needless deaths have on the families and friends of those who lose their lives. “I am glad that additional steps have been taken recently by Minister Ross, to further

drive home the point that drinking and driving in any capacity is completely unacceptable. “I believe that 100% of licences involved in a conviction need to be recorded to offer an effective deterrent and I hope this happens as a matter of urgency.”

Insp Yvonne Murphy stated that one of the incidents involved a Garda having to take evasive action at a checkpoint to avoid serious injury. An Tain Arts Centre is delighted to welcome Bewley’s Café Theatre to Dundalk with Malachy McKenna’s award winning new play ‘The Quiet Land’. It tells the story of two elderly farmers, Eamon and Nashee who meet at a gate on a remote hillside. They are old rivals, old neighbours. Their conversation is of a gentler time. But there’s nothing gentle about today’s conversation. They are forced to confront each other with some heartbreaking truths. The Quiet Land is a celebration of the humour, resilience and endearing innocence of an older generation as it struggles to survive in the rural Ireland of today. The Quiet Land is on in the main theatre on Friday May 5 at 8pm and tickets are €15 and €12 concession, available from An Táin Arts Centre, Crowe Street, Dundalk. Cairns claims second win of the season at Dundalk Golf Club

Kenneth Cairns, who won the first Sunday competition of 2017 back on January 15, returned to the winner’s enclosure in some style on Sunday when he won the 18 Hole Singles Stableford competition with a splendid score of 44pts. Having already lost one shot this season, Cairns, who was playing off 16, is set to see his handicap tumble after he posted a score that was eight points better than Competition Standard Scratch (CSS) for the day of 36pts. His 44pts was all the more remarkable considering that he failed to score on the second and only managed a six, for one point, on the third. That left him three clear of 17 handicapper Eamon Hoey, who took second place overall on the third stage of countback after he and Alan McCabe (8) were tied on 41pts. Teenager Josh Mackin (2) also fired a round of 41pts and he took second place behind McCabe in Category 1 but also claimed the Gross Prize with an excellent score of 39pts. Brian Gaughran (14) claimed Category 2 while Dermot McKenna (23) was the Category Three winner. Noel Reid (18) won the Men’s Singles Stableford on Easter Monday with a score of 40pts while Louise Lynn (18) won the Ladies Singles Stableford with 34pts. The Mixed Foursomes was won by Briege and Tommy Reneghan (19) with a nett score of 63. After reaching the last 16 of the West of Ireland Championship last week, Eoin Murphy was one of several Dundalk golfers who took part in the

Leinster Boys Championship at Headfort on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and he finished fourth in the 54 hole, three shots behind the winner, after rounds of 77, 71 and 70. The other Dundalk players participating were Sean Laverty, Josh Mackin and Kyle Rafferty. The national and provincial inter-club competitions are now underway and there was first round success for Dundalk in the All-Ireland Fourball with a 3-2 win over Greenore while the Barton Cup team beat Headfort 3-2 but the Mixed Foursomes team lost 4-1 to Royal Tara. The Provincial Towns Cup team won their opening match last Saturday against Balbriggan 5-4, with Damien English, Paul O’Callaghan, Gene Hanratty, Denis Cunningham and Derek Murdock winning the five home matches. Carl Stewart, Ken Lynch, Liam McGailey and Martin McEntaggart were the away players. Two Dundalk golfers certainly made their presence felt at West of Ireland Championship in Rosses Point last week and while they didn’t come away with the title, they certainly laid down markers for the season ahead. Caolan Rafferty went one better than year by reaching the last eight while Eoin Murphy, who has just turned 17, reached the last 16 in what was his first major amateur championship. Four other Dundalk players – Andrew Keenan, Conor Curran, Richie Newell and Neil MacKell – also played in the pre-qualifers but failed to make the cut.

Dundalk Sub Aqua Club members took part in the dive off the Mayo coast

Sub Aqua Club take part in rescue mission for missing crewmen Dundalk Sub Aqua club were in Mayo last weekend again assisting in the huge search for the missing crewmen of Rescue 116 which was organised using trained Search and Recovery divers from all over the country. Last weekend the search for the missing crewmen of Rescue 116 was intensified for what was probably the largest underwater searches ever to be undertaken in Ireland. Over 170 divers came from all over the country. Many travelled long journeys and arrived late on Friday evening. The volunteers were warmly welcomed by the local community and welcomed into their homes for the duration of the search.

These volunteers were experienced divers who were specifically trained as Search and Recovery Divers. There are 25 Search and Recovery Units attached to clubs throughout the country. This expertise was very evident throughout the day as they dived in an extremely challenging environment. The entire operation was highly planned and organised. The first boat left the pier at 5am on Saturday morning to assess the conditions at dive site. It was hoped to start diving at 6.30am but on review this was postponed til the afternoon. The dive boats were on a tight schedule and left the pier at 20 minute intervals. The search was focused on the

west, southwest and northwest of Blackrock Island. Each team were given a particular area to investigate, searching to depths of up to 30 metres. These coordinated dives were designed to rule out specific areas of interest that had been difficult to access since the tragedy occurred. Unfortunately as the dive boats returned to the shore, all the diving completed, there was still no success in tracing the missing Crew of Rescue 116. The search operation while scaled back will continue. Margaret McCarthy from Dundalk Sub Aqua Club stated that all the club’s thoughts are with the families, friends and colleagues of the crew of R116.

Over 13% of parents have identified themselves as the main driver of a car predominantly driven by one or more of their children, a process known as fronting, in an effort to reduce insurance costs, according to AA Ireland. According to an AA Car Insurance survey of over 3,000 motorists, 4.55% of parents polled stated that they are currently listed as the main driver on a car mostly used by one of their children. Meanwhile, a further 9.09% of respondents stated that they had done so in the past but were no longer listed as the main driver on a son or daughter’s car. “Within the context of rising motor insurance premiums, with younger drivers facing increasing difficulty in getting on the road, it may appear understandable that a parent would lie to an insurer about who the main user of a car is. However, there can be serious consequences,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Con-

sumer Affairs stated. “What may appear to be a harmless white lie can result in an insurer refusing to pay out in the event of an accident. If the insurer believes that fronting has taken place and that the car was mostly used by someone other than the person listed on the insurance policy as the main driver they are within their rights to refuse to cover any damage, with the exception of third party injury, resulting from an accident and even cancel the policy.” In addition to those that admitted to fronting either currently or in the past, almost an additional fifth of those surveyed stated they had been tempted to do so. 17.60% of parents surveyed stated that while they had never identified themselves as the main driver of a child’s car, they had considered doing so. “The cost of driving and particularly learning to drive has always been front-loaded, in that purchasing a car and getting it

insured is most expensive in your first few years behind the wheel before tapering off over time. While it may be tempting to resort to lying to your insurer to reduce your premiums, doing so is never worth the risk,” Faughnan added. “Instead, there are many simple steps you can take to reduce your car insurance premiums, such as checking that you are insuring your car for the correct value, which can reduce the cost of cover and don’t put you at risk in the way that fronting does.” Those aged between 46 and 55 were found to be the most likely to have either identified themselves as the main driver of their child’s car or considered doing so. 14.86% of those surveyed within this age bracket had either fronted in the past or were currently doing so, with a further 21.08% stating they had considered lying about being the main driver of a car belonging to their children.
