Remembering Luke

FUNDRAISER FOR MEMORIAL BENCH TO HONOUR TEEN KILLED IN DROWNING TRAGEDY

A FUNDRAISER to remember Luke McAuliffe who tragically died while out swimming in Balbriggan in May last year has raised over €1000 in just a few hours. The fundraiser called ‘The McAuliffe Mile’ aims to raise money for a bench, which will be installed in his memory in Gyles Quay where Luke was from.

Luke drowned last year on his first time swimming in Balbriggan, in Dublin after he switched from his regular bathing place in nearby Malahide because the water was “too shallow”.

The 19-year-old apprentice electrician was attending training college near Howth Junction in north Dublin. His father Alan was due to collect him at Dundalk Train Station but he became concerned when his son didn’t get off the train he was supposed to be on.

After finding out his son’s last known location via his Snapchat account he contacted Balbriggan Garda station who gave him the tragic news that a body matching his son’s description had been found near the Martello tower to the north of Balbriggan.

Miami Showband Plaque

PATSY Rogers and Eddie Marmion, organisers of last week’s Miami Showband plaque unveiling at the Longwalk, would like to thank Cooley man John Kane for making the frame for the plaque which was unveiled by former Miami Showband member Stephen Travers two weeks ago. SINN Féin Councillor

Sionainn McCann has welcomed the proposal from Louth County Council to introduce a 30km/h speed limit in housing estates but feels more can be done.

Cllr McCann said “I have been working closely with residents on this issue, particularly in Dromiskin and although most estates will be covered under the 30km/h proposal, there are concerns that The Hamlet and Common’s Grove estates will not be included.

“These are areas with a high number of children and pedestrians at all times so I feel that the revised speed limit should apply here as well.”

Cllr McCann also expressed concern that the large estate of Greenacres in Dundalk is currently 50km/h and has also

been excluded. “This is a particularly busy estate especially with the amount of vehicular and pedestrian traffic around the shops. Greenacres is a large estate stretching back into Oaklawns and parts of the roads can lend themselves to excessive speeding at times.

“The safety of our community must be the priority.”

Schools and community hubs are another major concern included in submissions to the Speed Limit Review and Councillor Antóin Watters

who was at the forefront of a campaign around Bellurgan School has called for a 50km/h limit around all schools and com-

munity hubs like football clubs or businesses, especially in rural or less built up urban areas where speeding is more of an issue.

Cllr Watters said “in particular I have asked Louth County Council to prioritise a speed reduction on parts of the R173 and R175 in Cooley where there have been a number of accidents over the last few years. That particular stretch of road includes three major road junctions and community buildings including Bush Post Primary School, Cooley Kickhams

GFC, St Mary’s Parochial Hall, Cooley Community Playgroup and Cooley Credit Union.”

Louth County Council assured Cllr Watters that the current speed limit review would ‘include a comprehensive assessment of all regional, local and urban roads across the county.’

Cllr Watters said “Residents should not have to undertake long campaigns to ensure safety measures around schools or built up community spaces, it should be a basic standard.”

African Arts Exhibition

AN African Arts Exhibition will take place in the Dundalk Museum, Jocelyn Street, Dundalk, between the 18th and 23rd August. The exhibition will take place each day during the normal museum opening hours. The event is organised by the African Cultural Centre.

Luke was a hugely popular figure in the area and all of his friends and family and anybody who knew him are invited to take part in the ‘McAuliffe Mile’ which will take place on a route that has not yet been finalised at the end of the Old Newry Road. Entry fee for the mile is €10 but all donations are welcome to support this cause. People are free to walk, jog or run this mile with refreshments for everyone at the Blue Anchor.

Organisers of the fundraiser say the bench will be a place for people to reflect on Luke and to remember him.

“He brought many people together and was known for his cheeky smile, constant good mood and spontaneous lifestyle. He left a huge hole in so many lives when he passed and we just wanted to do something to remember him by. I know not everybody

ners attending the ‘McAuliffe Mile’ on September 5th. He was also a member of Dundalk Rugby Club and when Luke died it was a huge shock to all his friends out there so it will just be nice for all his friends and family to all get together next month to remember him and to look back fondly on his life. We would like to thank the Blue Anchor for offering to host refreshments for everybody after the walk,” concluded the spokesperson for the fundraiser.

likes going to graveyards so we thought we would try and fundraise to get money to put a bench up in Gyles Quay where he was from and where he loved growing up in. He loved the water and swam at the pier all the time and he loved Gyles Quay so there is no better place to put the bench.

“Luke’s Dad Alan would be well known in running circles around Dundalk and North Louth so there is hopefully going to be lots of local run-

The ‘McAuliffe Mile’ takes place on Friday September 5th at 7pm on the old Newry Road. The finalised route will be announced shortly. All are welcome to either walk or run and the entry fee is €10 with all proceeds going towards erecting a bench and a plaque for Luke. Damien looking to gather the troops for 50th anniversary reunion

ALMOST fifty years ago to the day Damien Higgins joined the recently formed 27th Infantry Battalion who had launched a recruitment drive in 1975 having formed two years earlier. Damien, was previously working in ECCO but like many others around Dundalk found himself looking for alternative employment after a round of redundancies in early 1975.

Damien was a member of the FCA (Fórsa Cosanta Áitiúil/Local Defence Force) and went into full time service with them following his layoff. While up on service, Damien answered a recruitment drive for the 27th Battalion and signed up for training in Dundalk on September 15th 1975, almost exactly 50 years ago. Because of his FCA background , Damien’s training was accelerated and he became a full member of the 27th Infantry Battalion in December of 1975.

Damien enjoyed almost 24 years service with the Irish Army, mainly in the military police unit and he made plenty of friends and created plenty of brilliant memories during his time in service.

As often happens, Damien lost contact with many of his old friends and recently he had the idea to organise a reunion for anybody who served in the 27th Infantry Battalion. With Veterans Day falling this year on Saturday the 30th August, Damien thought that would make a perfect date for the reunion. He says he is now sending out an open invitation to anybody who served in the 27th Infantry Battalion to attend the reunion in Aiken Barracks on Saturday 30th August.

“I lost contact with a few of my old comrades in the army and I thought it would be nice to have some sort of reunion given the fact

that it is almost exactly 50 years to the day since I first joined the 27th Infantry Battalion. I’m asking anybody who was a member of that Battalion to come down and to bring any old photographs they might have with them. It will kick off at midday and will go on until the ball hop stops as they say,” laughed Damien.

“I was part of the number 1 recruit platoon that was trained in the barracks and I have already got word from some of those that trained with me that they will be in attendance. I’d like to see as many old faces as possible and hopefully plenty will turn up and we can have a great day looking back fondly on some great days working in the Barracks,” added Damien. The reunion for ex members of the 27th Infantry Battalion takes place on Saturday August 30th starting at midday.

Sarah Fagan Women’s Lap

THE female members of Dundalk’s Cuchulainn Cycling Club have now finalised plans for this Year’s Sarah Fagan Women’s Lap of Louth which will take place on Sunday 17th August 2025. Now in its 5th Year, this annual “female only” cycle, attracts female cyclists from several counties. In 2023 Cuchulainn CC was greatly saddened to lose one of its stalwart members Sarah Fagan who tragically drowned whilst participating in the Alpe d’ Huez Triathlon in France. Sarah was an esteemed member of both Cuchulainn CC and Setanta Triathlon club for many years. She was a keen athlete, eager to take on a challenge but especially remembered as someone who was forever on hand to encourage others, especially women and girls to join in the sports she loved.

Formerly known as ‘The Women’s Lap of Louth’, the sportive was renamed in 2023 the ‘Sarah Fagan Women’s Lap of Louth’ in memory of Sarah and the tremendous impact she had on women in sport. As in previous years, the SFWLOL will link into Sport Ireland’s “HER Outdoors Week”. This initiative is designed to attract more women into sport and to encourage women to enjoy the social and health benefits sporting activities provide. Cuchulainn CC and the SFWLOL are committed to inclusivity and are also proud to support and encourage

Members of the Sarah Fagan Lap of

tee and members of the

our chosen 2025 charity partner, St Patricks Soup Kitchen Dundalk.

The cycle offers two routes, 50km and 90 km both of which sweep their way across the rolling green hills of Louth, the picturesque villages dotted throughout the county and the beautiful coastal road with spectacular views across to the Mourne Mountains. No detail has been spared by the organizers who have created a great fun day for “women on wheels”. The routes will be safe and fully marshalled with plenty of snacks, water and loo stops. There will also be mechanical support available on the roads. At the finish at DKIT there will be food, music and craic galore as well as a free raffle for all participants offering some great prizes. Changing facilities and hot showers will also

be available for those wishing to avail.

The all-important date to mark in your diary is Sunday 17th August 2025, when the Sarah Fagan Women’s Lap of Louth pedals off from DKIT Sports Centre at 10.00am. Registration is now open online and participants may register on the day between 08.3009.30 with roll out from the Start Line at 10.00am. Registration Fee is €20 online and €25 on the day. Crisis in the childcare sector

No places for children under two in Louth states Ó Murchú

THE ‘crisis in the early years sector’ in Louth is ‘worse than it has ever been’, Dundalk TD Ruairí Ó Murchú has said this week.

The Sinn Féin deputy said there are no places for children under two in Louth at the moment in creches, which is ‘putting parents in a really difficult position’.

There are, he said, pregnant women putting down their unborn child on waiting lists to try to get a place for when they return to work, such is the pressure on services.

Deputy Ó Murchú said he had been contacted by parents from the county, desperate to find a creche for their underones, with mothers delaying their return to work so long that they are worried that they will lose their jobs.

In addition, he is also dealing with a family where a preschooler had secured a place with an AIMS (Access and Inclusion Model that allows children with disabilities to attend preschool) worker, only to be told earlier this month that the

Murchú, TD.

place is no longer available because the creche cannot get anyone suitable to fill the position.

Deputy Ó Murchú said: ‘It has become increasingly difficult in the last number of months for parents to find a creche place in Louth. Many places are not taking under twos any more because of the additional staff ratios that are needed, while trying to find suitably qualified workers is getting harder.

‘There is a massive crisis in preschool childcare and early learning that is a result of many factors, including the refusal by government to acknowledge that additional funding is needed in the sector, that hourly pay rates need to go up and workforce planning is not happening fast enough to get the staff into creches and preschool.

‘This crisis is putting massive pressure on parents, who are having to rely on ad hoc arrangements with family and friends in order to return to work.

‘Childcare was a hot topic during the election, with the government parties promising to match Sinn Féin’s €200 per month childcare costs cap, but in the months since the government has been formed, there has been no action to match their pre-election words and the crisis is only getting bigger.

‘There is an urgent need to get to a public model of childcare where there are sufficient places staffed by early educators who are properly paid and valued’.

Luke warns about the increase of phone scams

LUKE Martin, from Dundalk Social Services has warned OAP’s in particular to be wary about an increase in a scam involving ringing people asking them to purchase gift cards. According to Luke he was contacted by a lady in her 60’s recently who fell foul to a scam which resulted in her losing a large sum of cash.

The lady was contacted by somebody claiming to be from PayPal, who told her that her account had been hacked. The scammer created a sense of urgency by fabricating a scenario like an overdue payment or emergency, compelling the victim to take immediate action. The victim was then coerced into purchasing Apple gift cards to solve the issue. After she had purchased the gift cards she was asked to share the numbers and PINs off the back of the cards.

Once scammers obtain the card details, they can swiftly drain the funds, leaving victims financially compromised. According to Luke scams such as the one above are on the rise and he said people especially the elderly should be very careful when taking a phone call from somebody looking for

your bank details or asking you to part with money.

“Unfortunately these scammers are on the increase and they are getting more sophisticated. This latest scam that was brought to my attention happened to a lady in her 60’s when she was contacted by a woman using an Irish mobile number pretending to be from PayPal.

“Unfortunately she lost a large sum of money and I would urge everybody out there to never give out any bank account details or buy gift cards and send on the details. Just be very aware that phone scams are on the increase and if you are suspicious at all don’t be afraid to hang up,” added Luke.

Luke Martin has raised concerns about scam calls to OAPs.

€1m investment for Ardee Castle Regeneration VARCITIES Project nominated for E-Government award

SENATOR Alison Comyn, Fianna Fáil Senator for Louth and Seanad spokesperson on Arts, Media, Communications, Culture & Sport, has warmly welcomed the announcement of €1 million in additional Regional Development Fund (RDF) support for the regeneration of Ardee Castle, secured through the Department of Rural and Community Development and confirmed by Minister Dara Calleary.

“This is fantastic news for Ardee and for County Louth,” said Senator Comyn. “I want to sincerely thank Minister Dara Calleary for recognising the importance of this project and allocating this vital funding. Ardee Castle is one of Ireland’s most historically significant medieval buildings, and this investment will play a central role in securing its future.”

The €1 million investment will support a wide range of works, including: Structural conservation and restoration of the

castle’s historic tower; Development of visitor access and interpretive features; Public realm improvements and landscaping; Educational and community engagement initiatives.

Senator Comyn continued, “This funding will not only help preserve a key piece of our national heritage, but it will also bring real benefits to the town of Ardee — supporting tourism, creating local jobs, and strengthening the cultural life of the county.”

The project has already been awarded €2.147m in July 2019,

and this €1m is a an additional amount to help meet increased costs.

The project is expected to act as a catalyst for further development in Ardee, with potential for additional support through national heritage grants and local partnerships.

“I look forward to working with local stakeholders and the wider community to ensure this project delivers lasting value. Thanks again to Minister Calleary and his Department for backing Ardee and recognising the importance of investing in our heritage,” she concluded.

LOUTH County Council’s VARCITIES project at Dundalk Library has been nominated for a 2025 e-Government award.

The VARCITIES pilot project, a transformative urban regeneration initiative co-funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme, has been nominated in the Smart Cities and Urban Development category.

Located within the courtyard area of the County Library and Museum in Dundalk, the project, named The Still, has revitalised a former industrial site into a tranquil, inclusive public space that promotes health and well-being.

Key features include an outdoor learning pod, a sensoryrich garden, sensor-equipped bike stations, and a health and wellbeing platform displaying real-time environmental data.

The initiative exemplifies innovative, people-centred urban design that blends heritage with sustainability and digital innovation.

The annual e-Government Awards, which will take place on the 18th of September at O’Reilly Hall, UCD, Dublin, shine a spotlight on the depth and scale of digital transformation happening at a local level.

Sixteen of Ireland’s 31 local authorities have been shortlisted across 16 of the 17 categories – highlighting the growing

influence and ambition of local government in shaping the future of public service.

Cllr Seán Kelly, Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, said: “This nomination is a proud moment for Dundalk and Louth County Council. The VARCITIES project at the County Library is a shining example of how we can reimagine public spaces to support community well-being, sustainability, and innovation. It’s a testament to the creativity and collaboration of our teams and partners, and I would like to

congratulate everyone involved and wish them the very best of luck on the 18th of September.”

David Conway, Chief Executive of Louth County Council, said: “Being shortlisted for a national e-Government Award reflects Louth County Council’s commitment to digital transformation and citizen-focused design. As a public space, The Still is a forward-thinking model for how technology, nature, and heritage can come together to enhance life in an urban environment.”

Ursula Conlan, Executive

Planner for Sustainability at Louth County Council, said: “This nomination celebrates our pioneering work on the Digital Twin Platform and the engaging Go Nature Game, both developed through the innovative use of sensor technology at our VARCITIES pilot site. As part of the EU-funded collaborative VARCITIES project, this achievement highlights Louth County Council’s leadership in harnessing digital innovation to enhance urban sustainability and citizen engagement.”

Reduction of security cover in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital

SINN Féin Councillor Debbie McCole has expressed her deep concern regarding the reduction of full-time security cover at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital and is urging for an immediate reversal of this decision.

Cllr McCole emphasized, “The Emergency Department has consistently maintained a 24-hour security presence, with shifts covering both day and night to ensure the safety of staff, patients and visitors at all times. However, this change will limit security coverage to 12 hour shifts from 12 noon to midnight, effectively reducing service by over 80 hours per week.

She added, “This is particularly concerning in light of the hospital’s busy Emergency Department and the volatile incidents that can occur. It is imperative that we continue to have 24-hour security staffing at the hospital. Given that incidents have not diminished, I am concerned by the rationale behind this decision and am calling for it to be immediately reversed.”

Amanda Branigan appointed County Librarian and Head of Cultural Services

LOUTH County Council is delighted to announce the appointment of Amanda Branigan as County Librarian and Head of Cultural Services.

A native of Dundalk, Amanda has worked in the Louth Library Service for over 25 years, spending the last three as Acting County Librarian.

A past pupil of St Vincent’s Secondary School in Dundalk, she completed her undergraduate degree and postgraduate diploma in Library and Information Studies at UCD.

“I am delighted, honoured and proud to be the new County Librarian,” she said. “Most of my professional career has been spent in Louth, and it’s a wonderful place to work. We have a thriving Library Service with five branches across the county, including our newly opened branch in Dunleer.”

Along with the county’s libraries, Amanda will also lead the development, management, and effective delivery of Louth County Council’s cultural services, which include the Archives Service, Arts Service, and the County Museum.

“No two days are the same in this role,” she smiled. “I have a wonderful team of 55 staff members who go above and beyond in promoting cultural services, and thanks to significant investment by Louth County Council, we have been able to achieve all the strategic objectives of our current library plan, which finishes this year.

“These include increased opening hours up to six days a week with four late nights in our full-

time branches; two My Open Library Services in our Ardee and Drogheda branches; development of our stock collections, physical books and eResources, and a farreaching programme of events.

“Looking ahead, it’s an exciting time. The Library Service will continue to focus on its role in literacy support, supporting lifelong learning opportunities, and ensuring our libraries are innovative, inclusive, safe, and inspiring spaces.”

The Louth County Council Arts Service continues to provide programming, support, and structure to the artistic community, allowing them to deliver their work to benefit the health and

cultural wellbeing of the county.

Fundamental to the Archives Service and County Museum is memory and legacy. Louth County Archives will continue to manage the identification, preservation and availability of the public and private archive collections held in its repository.

Furthermore, the investment in the County Museum highlights the importance of recognising the achievements of previous generations and how these feats continue to impact our lives on a daily basis.

“Collectively, through our Libraries, Arts, Archives and Museum services, I want to showcase the cultural, creative, historical, literary, and artistic heritage of the county, and I look forward to collaborating with our communities to celebrate and expand the cultural richness of County Louth,” added Amanda.

Ger Murphy, Director of Services of Housing and Culture Delivery at Louth County Council, said: “I am delighted that Amanda has been appointed as County Librarian and Head of Cultural Services.

“She brings a wealth of experience, dedication, and vision to the role, and her leadership will be instrumental in continuing to grow and enhance our Library Services, Arts programmes, Archives Service, and County Museum.

“These services are central to our community’s cultural life, and under Amanda’s guidance, they will continue to inspire, educate, and connect people across the county.”

Kind-hearted sisters get hair chopped for charity

KIND-hearted Bay Estate sisters Anna and Caoimhe Nixon have raised over €1200 for Cara Cancer Care Charity by getting their hair cut last Tuesday.

Nine-year old Anna and her seven-year old sister Caoimhe got twelve inches cut off their hair to donate to the Little Princess Trust. The Little Princess Trust is a charity that provides free real hair wigs to children and young people up to the age of 24, who have lost heir own hair through cancer treatment or other conditions.

Hairdressers Sinead Loughran and Claire McCormack from Chaplains Hair Salon, cut the girls hair in Cara Cancer Care’s support centre on Williamsons Place last Tuesday as parents Denice and John watched on.

According to Denice the idea to cut their long hair for charity came from Anna and when Caoimhe heard about her big sister’s plan she came on board as well.

“Anna came up to us about a year ago and told us she wanted to get her hair cut and donate it to this children’s cancer charity that make wigs for sick kids. We told her she could do it after she made her communion and once that was over

with she came back again and asked and we agreed. Caoimhe of course does everything Anna does so she wanted to get hers cut too so they set about making a plan to raise money through the idonate website.

“Coming here today they had raised over €1200 for Cara Cancer which is absolutely

amazing for two young girls. They weren’t scared at all coming here today and it was really only me who was nervous for them this morning,” laughed Denice.

“We’ve all been affected at some stage by cancer whether that be personally or family members or friends so we are delighted that the

girls will be able top hand over a cheque to Cara Cancer to help them continue the great work they do locally,” she added. At the time of going to press the girls had raised €1,295 through their donate page www.idonate. ie/fundraiser/Sisters2. All proceeds will go to Cara Cancer.

Dundalk Young Irelands officially launch Strategic Development Plan

DUNDALK Young Irelands GFC, Ireland’s oldest GAA club, launched its new Strategic Development Plan 2025–2030 live on Dundalk FM on Tuesday 5th August. The club, founded in 1884, has grown rapidly in recent years and now has over 400 registered players and more than 1,500 people connected through players, coaches, parents, volunteers, and supporters. A major highlight has been the development of Ladies Football — with no teams just a few years ago, the club now fields ladies’ teams at every age level. This year, the U14 ladies were crowned league champions, and several

players are involved in Louth’s underage development squads.

The plan, shaped by players, coaches, parents, and the local community, outlines key priorities including securing an additional playing pitch to meet growing demand, improving parking and access around the grounds for safety, and continuing to grow as a vibrant, inclusive community club.

The club also announced the launch of its new website at www.dyi.ie, where visitors can access fixtures, news and team info.

The club is now active on the ClubZap app for real-time updates, training schedules, and alerts, and recently

introduced an online Club Lotto, helping to raise vital funds for future development.

Looking ahead, Dundalk Young Irelands will be out in numbers for Flag Day on Wednesday 6th August, with volunteers and players collecting around town. Another important event is the Barry McDermott Memorial Golf Classic, taking place on Friday 15th August at Greenore Golf Club, raising funds for the club in memory of a muchloved clubman.

To find out more, support the plan, or get involved, visit www. dyi.ie or follow Dundalk Young Irelands GFC on social media.

Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I asked you for many favours. This time, I ask for this special favour (mention it). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart, where your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes, it will become your favour, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for three days. Promise publication and favours will be granted. (Never known to fail). E.C.

Brilliant night of darts for the Mickey Martin Cup

MICKEY was one of the quiet men working in the background for Dundalk Darts, County Louth Darts and also with the Irish Dart Team for many years.

It was fitting that, on the eve of the anniversary of Mickey’s passing, that the quality of darts thrown would be fitting in Mickey’s memory..

39 throwers entered the competition and the draw, yet again, threw up some mouth watering clashes in the early rounds.

On the same board, Alan Dullaghan was going well from an early stage with a lot of big scores being hit, but after beating Mickey Wehrly and then last year’s winner, Ray Harte, Alan would get eliminated by Daniel Dunn in the board final.

Board 2 saw one of the regular travellers over from Cavan, Conor Carroll, beat

Marty Dixon in the prelims before going on to beat Raymond “Wellies” O’Brien and then Ciaran Treanor to reach the board final.

But unfortunately for Conor, the other Conor on Board 2, Conor Mc Ardle had reached the board final and beat Conor Carroll to reach the overall semifinals of the competition.

Conor Dunn beat John Kelly in the 1st round before beating James Callan in the next Round to reach the board final.

In the board final, despite Simon hitting a monster 167 checkout, Conor would go on to win 2-1.

Dundalk FC set to host series of walking events

Dundalk FC are creating a smoke free zone in Oriel Park.

DUNDALK FC are set to host a series of walking events at Oriel Park over the next two weekends, in conjunction with the Not Around Us Campaign. The campaign aims to encourage parents to reflect on the impact that smoking and vaping around children can have.

Families are invited to Oriel Park on Saturday, 16th August at 2pm and Saturday, 23rd August at 11am to take part in a short, lapped walk around the pitch. Following the walk, there will be free healthy refreshments and an opportunity to meet and greet players from the Dundalk squad. The walk is open to all ages and abilities.

As part of the campaign—sponsored by Healthy Ireland in partnership with the HSE and Louth County Council—Dundalk FC will create a new smoke-free zone in Oriel Park. This zone will be located behind the town-end goals, where many children gather during home games. The club believes this is the most impactful area to prioritise in creating a healthier, more family-friendly environment.

Currently on match days, junior local soccer teams are playing mini
