A local soccer club have hosted a fundraiser to help a local family cover expenses associated with bringing their son to Switzerland for treatment. Four-year-old Daniel Boyce from Ashling Crescent has been diagnosed with Retinoblastoma, which means he has tumours in both eyes. Having been initially treated in Temple Street Children’s hospital Daniel was subsequently referred to a specialist clinic in Switzerland which he has already attended twice since Christmas. It costs Daniel’s parents Paul Boyce and Pauline Dolan €1350 to travel to Switzerland and when a manager of a local underage soccer team heard about Daniel’s plight he

I also did pretty well in Kona, Hawaii for the World Ironman Championships and I’m definitely a lot more confident now that I can race with these athletes. “I’ve given up working in the jewellers and to all intents and purposes my job now is based completely around training which is a return for me to the old days when I was a paid footballer.

As well as training for myself I am also training and coaching other athletes to help them improve. Now that I’ve got my pro licence and I’ve got more time to train I plan on doing a couple of extra ironman competitions this year. I’ll probably do the ones in Germany and Wales and I’m also eyeing up the big one in Arizona at the end of the year,” explained Bryan.

MABS Tips for First Communion Kenny calls for passionate home support & Confirmation The Money Advice & Budgeting Service, MABS is a free, independent, confidential and non-judgmental service, providing one-to-one advice to people who are having financial difficulties or are in debt. First Communion and Confirmation are special events in your child’s life. A day for family and friends to come together to celebrate. We all know that these events can be very expensive. The pressure of trying to make the day special for your family can result in a lot of stress. Here we offer some simple tips to make the experience more enjoyable for you and your family and avoid some of the stress. Some planning and thinking ahead may make all the difference. • Make a list early in the year of what you might need to buy. Remember it is not just the child you have to think about all the family. • Check the prices of items already in the shops • Fill out the attached Budget Sheet. Add up the total cost and ask yourself – Can I afford it? If not, then think again. • Check shops for sales and reductions. Many shops offer a weekly payment option. Are there any dresses/suits in your family that can be used? Check online. Many Irish buyand-sell websites offer top quality products at great prices. • Are there any ways you can reduce the entertainment cost? Can you pool your resources with a family member or friend who perhaps is also celebrating on the day? Have something at home instead of going out? • Now revise your Budget Sheet Saving Tips for the Day Once you know how much you will need to spend on the day, you can now look at how you need to save for the big day. • Check the calendar to see how many weeks are left until you need to buy the important items on your list, • How much will you need to save each week to buy the items on your list? Example If you need €400 and it is 15 weeks to your shopping trip, divide 400 by 15 - €400/15= €26.66 – therefore, you need to save per week. Can you spare €26.66 from your weekly income? If not go back to the drawing board – cut the list again! • Put the money you need to save away each week some place where you do not have easy access to it, i.e. a savings account in a post office, credit union or bank. • If you think you will be unable to save the necessary money and feel you may need to borrow please consider the weekly repayments impact on you budget. Contact your local MABS office before doing so to see what other options are available to you. • Log on to www.mabs.ie for more information on how to plan for the big day. • MABS National Helpline: • Tel: 0761 07 2000

The champions are back in action this Friday evening as they host Shamrock Rovers in Oriel Park for the first game of the new Airtricity League 2017 season. Dundalk have enjoyed unprecedented success since Stephen Kenny took over back in December 2012 and are looking to make it an incredible four league titles in a row. Having lost three of their star players from last season (Daryl Horgan, Andy Boyle and Ronan Finn) as well as having to contend with a lengthy injury list, (Gary Rogers, David McMillan, Chris Shields, Sean Hoare are all out while Ciaran Kilduff is doubtful) Friday evening will see a much-changed Dundalk team to the one who impressed

so many times during a memorable 2016 campaign. Stephen Kenny has appealed for the Dundalk fans to come out in force and get behind the champions as they prepare for their opening game of the season. “Listen, this is a big game for us to start the season with and we really need the Dundalk fans to come out in force and get behind their team. We have quite a few injuries and obviously we lost Daryl, Andy and Ronan so it’s a big ask for us but with the crowd behind us it will give us that extra lift. We’ve brought in some new players and I’m delighted with how they have settled in. We have a huge challenge ahead of us this season

and we are going to need everybody to be at their best if we are to retain our title,” remarked Stephen. Dundalk’s new pitch will be ready for Friday evening’s game but as of Tuesday morning the team still haven’t been able to train on it. Instead they have travelled to Abbotstown where they have been training on the astroturf pitches in preparation for the new season. It promises to be another exciting year for Dundalk fans both at home and abroad and what better way to kick off proceedings than a game against one of Dundalk’s fiercest rivals, Shamrock Rovers. Get yourself down to Oriel Park this Friday evening and make some noise!

Students impress at debate Students from St. Mary’s College took part in the regional heat of Gael Linn’s prestigious ‘Abair’ Irish public speaking competition on Tuesday February 7, with David Duffy, Jack Lambert, Krzysztof Baran and Philip Oladele representing the school on the day. Given chance Students celebrate Career Discovery achievements to avoid prison A man who pleaded guilty to a number of drugs offences has been given the opportunity to carry out Community Service in lieu of a prison sentence. Alex Dunne of 64 Grange Drive, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk, had the case against him adjourned until March 22 after pleading guilty at the local district court. Evidence was given that on January 1 last year at 11.40pm, the defendant was observed by Gardai in a drugs transaction. After being searched he was found to have cannabis valued at €138 and cocaine worth €53. On January 5/6 Gardai attended College Manor following a report from the new occupant of the house. While there, Mr Dunne arrived and explained that he was a former tenant and wanted to collect property. He was found with €10 worth of cannabis. A follow up search at 64 Grange Drive resulted in a bag of cannabis worth €10 being found. Solicitor, Elaine Connolly, stated that the 23-year-old defendant, who had seven previous convictions, committed the offences during a period of unemployment. Work had dried up and he fell into difficulty with drugs but has since turned his back on them. He has had a daughter born recently and is living with his partner. Judge Flann Brennan stated that the offences merited a sentence but said he would consider 100 hours Community Service in lieu of nine months.

tional educational needs. While completing modules in Career Preparation, Entrepreneurial Skills and Work Experience, the students are supported by local businesses to highlight their skills and talents in real work en-

vironments, leading to part time paid employment. More than 100 people attended the event including Guest of Honour, Finian McGrath TD, Minister for Disability Issues. Minister McGrath, concluded

the event by telling the assembled group that he had secured €2M in the budget for Pre-Activation projects, like WALK PEER, to help young people with disabilities to get into employment and contribute to Irish society.

Spirit of St Valentine’s Day is lost in street fight News By Patrick McGeough

There may have been plenty of love the air around Dundalk on February 14 but less than a day later the spirit of St Valentine’s Day appeared to have evaporated as a nasty fight broke out at the Market Square in the early afternoon. Just after 1pm on Wednesday, the town centre came to a standstill as Gardai tried to

bring under control a street fight that started with two females. The incident began with two women shouting at each other in an aggressive fashion. Then all of a sudden the two girls were fighting right outside the court. The first fight quickly ended up on the ground with both girls dealing brutal punishment to each other. The two were then broken

up by a group of men. But as soon as they were broken up, two men began to fight. At this point a single guard arrived on the scene. Gardai then arrived in numbers while approximately 110 bystanders looked on in disbelief. As the two men continued to fight, they managed to cross over to Earl Street as Garda sirens could be heard going

through the town. The situation was then quickly defused. There has been one arrest in relation to the fight. The events took place on the 15th of February, the day after Valentine’s day. This shows the stark differences 24 hours can make. From a day celebrating love to a most violent act in public view.

A man who needed money to pay compensation for a car he damaged turned to selling drugs in order to raise the money. Conor Hanway of 3 Bothar Na Feirme, Dundalk, told Dundalk District Court that he made a ‘foolish mistake’ after admitting to having over €7,000 worth of drugs for sale. The court heard that on June 9, Gardai had his home under surveillance following complaints from the public. After searching his house they found cannabis valued at €6,994, cocaine valued at €166 and 100 tablets valued at €200 along with weighing scales and deal bags. Solicitor, Peter Lavery, stated that his client needed the money for a car he had damaged and

he foolishly turned to drugs. He accepted that this was a huge mistake and something he had never done before. He had been of a very good character otherwise. Mr Lavery pointed out that the defendant has gone to counselling to deal with the drug problem and doesn’t use them or associate with people involved in drugs. He added that Mr Hanway’s partner is expecting his first child and is now working full-time, as he asked for his client to be given a chance. Judge Flann Brennan adjourned the case to March 22 for a Community Service Report and stated that he would consider 170 hours in lieu of eight months.

St Louis Dundalk hasn’t competed in Junk Kouture for a few years but when Amy Moroney decided to re-enter the fray she certainly did it in style. Her dress is made of genuine junk – she told us some of the concrete is still sticking to parts of the orange building site mesh. Amy has been lucky enough to make it to the Regional finals which will take place in early March. Under the guidance of her Junior Cert Art teacher, Aine McEneaney, Amy worked on this piece by herself – every part is self made, and she explained her thinking behind the piece. “My costume is inspired by mythical dragons and is made completely out of junk. I believe the most unusual feature of my dress is the metallic spine and ribs with flamed shoulder pads. This piece appears at the back of the dress, and is made out of wire and papier maché. The top of the dress is made out of stones and bark and some old red Christmas wrapping paper which just so happened to work well against the orange of the building ma-

Amy’s dress is a big hit terials. “The bottom is made out of black plastic bags and covered in plastic orange building site material, giving the illusion of a fuller dramatic skirt over the mermaid skirt beneath. The look is finished with a headpiece made with wire and strips of the orange building site material”, she revealed.

St Vincent’s staff and students went orange today in support of Cycle Against Suicide’s national #SchoolsGoOrange campaign. The main objective of Cycle Against Suicide is to raise awareness of the considerable help and supports that are available to people who are battling depression or at risk of suicide or those who have been bereaved by suicide. St Vincent’s is very proud to be an anchor school for this year’s cycle. The staff and students are working very hard to promote the cycle’s message that ‘it’s ok not to feel ok and it’s absolutely ok to ask for help’.

Protest brings traffic to crawl By Paul Byrne

A protest against Britain’s exit from the EU took place on the M1 at Carrickarnon last Saturday as the group Border Communities Against Brexit brought traffic to a slow crawl to highlight the impact of a border between the North and the South. The convoy of protestors staged their go-slow at 10am on Saturday morning using lorries and tractors reminding people of what it was like when checkpoints were used between both jurisdictions. There was also a mock check-point erected to once again highlight the detrimental impact of a border with the North.

Border Communities Against Brexit Spokesperson Declan Fearon spoke at the protest and thanked everybody who had come out to support their campaign. “We thank everybody for coming out

this morning to show your support for our campaign. The many trucks, tractors, trailers, vans and cars, as well as the dozens of protestors. You all have very effectively shown how your anger and frustra-

tion that the Norths decision to Remain within the EU is NOT being respected. “There are a total of Four protests today at 10:00am in Aughnacloy at Moybridge, in Lifford and at Bridge End

Became upset at New Year party A woman who was attending a New Year’s Eve party became so upset when her friend was being arrested that she ended up being arrested herself. Donna Stewart of 50 Doolargy Avenue, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk, was given the chance to preserve her clean record after having her case dismissed under the Probation Act at Dundalk District Court. Evidence was given that at 11.35pm

on December 31 last, Gardai were attempting to arrest a man after a beer can had been thrown at a patrol car. Ms Stewart attempted to intervene and was arrested. The defence solicitor stated that the 22-year-old single mother of two apologised to the court for her actions. Judge Flann Brennan warned her not to do anything as foolish again as he applied the Probation Act.

in Derry “It is very ironic that we are protesting on the M1 Motorway, one of the finest examples of European assistance to the Island of Ireland. It links Larne to Cork, bringing all of the people on this island closer together. Now we are protesting on it to remain within the EU. We certainly do not want a hard border to be erected upon it. What a travesty that would be for everyone living on this island,” stated Declan. This is a view which is seemingly shared by Taoiseach Enda Kenny, speaking at the All Ireland Forum last Friday, who once again re-iterated his opinion that ‘we must not return to a hard border’.

Sunday saw the start of the Winter League and saw Eddie Rocks hard at work on the practice ground over the past week that he recorded his first overall victory of the season. The 11-handicapper was one of three players to return

a score of 32pts for the 13 holes but took victory on the second round of countback from Barry Cunningham (10) and Conall Murdock (8) as the Category 1 golfers showed their class. There was some consola-

tion for Murdock as he took the Gross Prize with a fine score of 26pts after being edged out by Cunningham for the Category 1 prize. Peter O’Brien (18) took Category 2 with 30pts from Willie McKeever (17) on

29pts while Category 3 went to Mark Browne (22) on 31pts which was three clear of Anthony McGuinness (23) in second on 28pts. Entries for the new category specific Match Play competitions - Senior (5 to Plus),

Junior (6 to 12), Intermediate (13 to 20) and Minor (21 to 28) – close next Sunday, February 26. The entrance fee is €5 and entries should be posted in the entrance box located in the bar. The Captain’s Drive-In

takes place on Sunday at 1pm. There will be a four man team event in the morning with a shotgun start at 9am and following the Drive-In there will be a nine hole mixed foursomes (both nines) with a shotgun start at 1.30pm.

Breathnach calls on the Minister to support Drumcar Fianna Fáil TD for Louth Declan Breathnach has raised the matter of the myriad of problems with the services at St. John of God facility at Drumcar with the Minister for Health, which were highlighted in Thursday evening’s RTE Investigates programme. “These problems have been in the public arena for quite some time. Being put together and presented in one programme, really highlights the severity of the situation of those with severe intellectual inabilities. It is extremely sad and disturbing and this cannot be allowed to continue.”

Declan Breathnach, TD.

“The concept of the evolving move from institutionalised accommodation to community settings has to be lauded and in my experience shows that the staff, in the main, deliver a great service in both settings to clients and their families”. “The St. John of God services at Drumcar have provided down the years

exceptional care in what now are clearly archaic and outdated buildings and facilities.” “I wish to commend the staff who do a tremendous job in both settings of care and to say that the issues highlighted by HIQA are mainly resource issues and delivery of these resources must be vigorously pursued”. “It must also be remembered that some clients are institutionalised and can be extremely difficult and challenging, but that should not impact negatively on other service users, as has been the case at Drumcar.” “I condemn the charg-

ing of patients for additional services or medical devices, and indeed any breach of the Government cap on salary. HIQA have to ensure the highest standards of care and I will be calling on the Minister in the Dáil for support to ensure that the facilities at Drumcar be improved to meet modern delivery of care for the many who still need institutionalised care at the facility.” “In support of HIQA, the families and staff affected I will be pursuing the Minister to deliver the resources to meet the many regrettable inadequacies highlighted.”

Deadline approaching for ‘Rose’ escorts ROSE of Tralee, Maggie McEldowney, has challenged young Louth men to see if they have what it takes to be a Rose Escort at this year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival from 16-22 August. March 16 is the entry deadline, so lads will have one month to ap-

ply at www.roseoftralee.ie/apply. The primary role of a Rose Escort is to look after his Rose and ensure her time at the festival is a memorable and enjoyable experience. The successful candidates will take part in a team-building Boot Camp in June at some of Kerry’s

most stunning locations and participate in Festival events in August including the Gala Rose Ball, Parades and seven full days of entertainment. One of the 65 gentlemen will be announced as the Rose Escort of the Year live on RTE One television on Monday August 21.

1 IN 5 TO CHANGE CAR BEFORE 2018 Hill Street, Dublin Rd., Dundalk.

042 9331515/086 2559201

Almost one in 10 of motorists intend on changing their car before July 2017, with over 20% planning a change before the end of the year according to recent research carried out by AA Ireland. 9.05% of the over 7,000 respondents to an AA Motor Insurance Survey carried out in January 2017 stated that they intended to change their car within the following 6 months. While a further 12.71% of those surveyed admitted they were likely to change their car before 2018, the survey found that the majority of motorists are planning a longer wait be-

fore making any change. Almost a third of those surveyed (32.21%) stated that would wait 1-2 years before changing their car, with over a quarter (25.44%) planning to retain their current car for 3 to 5 years. “New car sales are very slightly down at the start of the year but that is not the full story.” Says Director of Consumer Affairs Conor Faughnan. “The second-hand market is strong." While the majority of motorists intend on purchasing directly from a dealer when the time to change car comes, just

28% of those surveyed stated that they intend on buying a brand new car. Over half of those surveyed (52.95%) stated they are would most likely buy a second hand car from a dealer when they opt to replace their current vehicle, with 7.61% likely to buy a second-hand car elsewhere. While the survey found that large groups of both men and women are planning on changing their car before the end of 2017, men are 4% more likely to make a change before 2018 with 23.79% planning a change this year compared to 19.75% of women.
