Dundalk Leader 19th August 2015

Dundalk cricketers ease past Longford Wedding Showroom

On Saturday, Dundalk 1st XI made the trip to Longford CC and on a very challenging pitch, Dundalk bowled Longford out for just 124 before a classy display of big-hitting gave them an eight wicket victory. Longford were in trouble from the start, with a communication mix up in the second over enough for Michael Mullen to run out Bala Iqbal. Steve McGrath continued the destruction of the top-order, taking three cheap wickets. Longford appeared to settle but collapsed calamitously after drinks. Firstly, Waleed Shahid ran out Umar Sarfraz before Mul-

len struck with two wickets in two balls, with Andy Williams taking a superb catch for the second. Glen Armstrong took a wonderful diving catch at point off Williams’ bowling and then Kevin Waterman fin-

ished off the rout with two wickets of his own. Chasing 125, Dundalk began brightly, with openers Andy Pike and Michael Hughes putting on 25 for the first wicket before Hughes was caught off

Rahman Aarshad’s bowling. Sajan Jayaseelan made a quick 25 but it was the Australian duo of Pike and McGrath who sealed the game for Dundalk, the pair finishing not out on 43 and 31 respectively.

The win cements Dundalk’s lead at the top of the league, but they face a trip to fellow title contenders Slieve Bloom next Saturday. On Sunday, the second team travel to the Phoenix Park to play Phoenix V in what could turn out to be a crucial game for both teams’ season. Also on Saturday, Dundalk will host their annual Youths’ Cricket day, starting at 1pm at the club’s pitch in Dromiskin. The day will consist of two Twenty20 games as well as the presentation of awards. Food and drink will be available all day and everyone is invited to attend.
