GARDAI have begun searching part of a 16 acre site off the Ardee Road, behind the Bus Eireann depot, known locally as Balmer's Bog. The search is in connection with the disappearance of Ciara Breen who went missing 18 years ago on February 13, 1997.

Speaking at the press conference Superintendent Gerry Curley and Detective Inspector Pat Marry who is the Senior Investigation Officer of Ciara’s case said they were following a line of enquiry following a tip off from a member of the public who had contacted them in the wake of last year’s renewed appeal.

Trio complete charity cycle to Tralee 2

Having set out at the crack of dawn from Dundalk last Friday morning, local men Jonny McGailey, Mike Geraghty and Michael Bishop arrived in Tralee on Saturday evening tired but unbowed as they completed their mammoth 350km charity cycle.

The local trio decided

to cycle to Tralee to try and raise some money for the Alzheimer Society of Ireland, Make a Wish Foundation and Friends of A. Having initially set an ambitious target of €5000 the trio were overwhelmed with the support they received and at last count they had raised close to €10,000 for the three charities.

According to

Dromiskin man Jonny McGailey the cycle was very tough but the sense of achievement and the fact they raised so much money definitely made it all worthwhile. Jonny a well known face in Tralee having captured the 2013 Escort of the Year at the Rose festival was hugely appreciative of all the support received throughout the epic journey.

“It was a great feeling getting into Tralee and we received a great welcome from the locals who were aware we were on route and gave us a great reception on Saturday evening.

All along the route we received fantastic support and we were blown away when we seen we’d exceeded our €5000 target”, noted a delighted Jonny.

“We left Dundalk at 6:30 on Friday morning and reached Moneygall on Friday evening where we met up with Barack Obama’s long lost cousin Henry Healy who looked after us very well. We went to Ollie’s Bar in Moneygall and had a great night there before setting off for Tralee at 7am Saturday morning. We were a good team and

even though we were all struggling at various stages we kept each other going and we pushed through the pain barrier.

It was pure adrenaline that got us through the last 40 miles or so into Tralee as we were all knackered. We’re staying down here for a few days now to cheer on the Louth Rose Jenny Hanlon.

LOUTH County Archives Service is asking members of the public to look in their attics for any archives regarding the 1913-23 period.

The County Archives is holding a ‘Decade of Centenaries Collection Day’ on Monday August 24 in the Old Gaol on the Ardee Road, Dundalk, and people are invited to bring items relating to the Irish Volunteers and the 1913-23 period in general.

The County Archivist can give preservation advice and can scan items suitable for 2016 Irish Volunteers’ exhibition.

Examples of items include photographs, letters, autograph books, postcards, diaries, flyers or notices, membership cards, keepsakes or even family stories.

In addition to organisations such as the Irish Volunteers or Cumann na mBan, items may relate.

Anyone interested in donating items at

the Collection Day is welcome to visit Louth County Archives at the Old Gaol on Monday August 24.

Summer camp is a big hit at St Josephs Talk on the “Mary Stoddart” disaster

Thirty-six students from St. Josephs NS in Muirhevnamor made the most of their school holidays by taking part in a very enjoyable summer camp which focused on healthy living and healthy eating.

The students had a show-and-tell which was attended by parents, Senator Mary Moran and national project coordinator Bernadette McHugh who helped the school get funding for the camp. Only 42 camps each year are available around the country and St Joseph’s were delighted to be chosen as one of the lucky schools to receive funding for the camp.

The school corridors were buzzing all week as the children took part in a wide range of activities including sport, art, drama, music, cooking as well as filmmaking.

“We had a 100% attendance rate which is a credit to each pupil

as well as their parents.

We had a lot of fun this week and hopefully the kids learned a bit as well”, stated Anthony.

Alan and Tess echoed those sentiments with Tess saying she was proud of how the children had embraced the health aspect of the camp noting that this enthusiasm was one of the reasons the school had recently been awarded a ‘Healthy Ireland -Health Promoting Flag’.

Playroom Project finds the perfect home

It was celebration time for Women’s Aid Dundalk as they opened the doors to their Playroom Project at the Mullaharlin Community Creche on Friday morning.

Almost 12 months to the day since the organisation put in motion the plans to move to the new centre from their Avenue Road base, they held the official opening of the valuable community service.

Caolan Rafferty captured the Club Championship for the first time when he replicated his first round 69 in last Saturday’s second round to win by four shots from Aaron Grant.

Rafferty, who is in superb form at present, held a three shot lead over Grant going into the final round. Although Grant improved on his

Youth given chance to turn break from addiction A juvenile whose addiction problem resulted in him turning to crime has been given the chance to get the help he requires.

The 17-year-old pleaded guilty to three burglaries during which he caused over €3,000 worth of damage, when he appeared at Dundalk District Court.

His solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that his client and family felt that the defendant would benefit from time in prison in an attempt to free himself from drugs.

He pointed out that the problems stemmed from his addiction to benzos, which he was buying on the street, and that led him to

get himself in trouble.

A Probation Report produced in June indicated that the signs were positive, but unfortunately he had lapsed into taking drugs and committed the crimes.

His ambition is that he would be in custody to stay away from drugs for a sufficient time that would allow him to deal with being at liberty.

However, a Probation Officer stated that the best treatment for a young person would be in a residential treatment programme, as opposed to prison. He stated that he could investigate if there was a place available.

Judge William Hamill remand-

ed the juvenile in custody for two weeks to allow that information to be found.

On June 14 this year, Gardai attended Aura Leisure Centre following reports of intruders and they came across the defendant in the area with a laptop. Damage estimated at €850 was caused during the incident and he admitted breaking in.

On July 31 the youth admitted breaking into a house at Rockfield Court. A patio window was smashed during the incident.

On August 5, he was involved in a burglary at Aura during which damage was estimated at €2,450.

Double the fun at Dundalk Stadium

The Bar One Racing ‘Dual Race Day’ took place at Dundalk Stadium’s all-weather horse and greyhound track on Sunday August 16.

A seven-horse race card was followed by 12 greyhound races featuring the annual Bar One Racing Irish Sprint Cup Final.

Ireland’s only sprint Classic event, The Bar One Racing Irish Sprint Cup has a total prize fund of over €35,000 and a winner’s purse of €20,000.

The Bar One Racing Mourne Handicap took place in the afternoon, won by Oisin Orr on Balmont Mast for owner Derek Iceton and trainer Edward Lynam.

Events planned to remember Hunger Strikes Next weekend will see the 34th anniversary of the 1981 hunger strike which resulted in the deaths of ten young republican men from all over the six counties.

The National Commemoration will be held in Louth this year and there will be a weekend of events which

will commence on Friday evening in Drogheda with the ‘Owen Carron Lecture’.

In Dundalk on Saturday at Noon, Stan Corrigan, father of Sinn Féin councillor Edel Corrigan, will host a guided tour of republican graves at Dowdallshill graveyard.

He will give a brief history

and background of some of those republicans buried in the republican plot and around.

In the afternoon, at 2pm there will be a showing of the film “A Kind of Sisterhood” in the Whitaker Theatre, DKIT. The film spans a 25-year period covering

the first women internees through to the closure of Armagh jail and covers the gruelling effects of the ‘nowash’ protest by the republican women. Some of the women involved in the film will be present for a Q&A and discussion afterwards.

Parents claim kids are abandoned

A local man has called on any parent with an intellectual disability to attend a meeting to fight against the closure of the hugely successful ‘Walk Peer Programme’ which ceased last month.

The ‘Walk Peer’ programme which was funded by the Department of Social Protection and European Social Fund supported young people (aged between 16 and 24) with intellectual disabilities from Louth and helped them into training, education and employment. Each young adult was given a dedicated mentor who worked alongside them as they created a path into employment.

However, the programme which began in 2013 was ended last month much to the anger of all those who had found the project to be hugely beneficial.

Peter O’Reilly who lives in Cooley says his son Eoghan was making real progress in his life thanks to the Walk Peer programme and he now feels that the Government have abandoned Eoghan and many young adults like him with the decision not to continue the project.

“My son Eoghan has an intellectual disability and this was the best programme he was ever involved in. Unfortunately it closed down on July 31 “As a result, these young adults find themselves left abandoned and without the support of this programme which was making real progress in their lives. Some of the parents of these children had a meeting to discuss the situation and have decided to have a function to mark the closing of this programme”, explained Peter.

“The Parents wanted to highlight the scandal of how these young adults find themselves discriminated against in education and employment. We are now following this up with another meeting in Muldoons Bar & Restaurant in Ardee on Thursday August 20 at 8pm. We want any parent who has a child with an Intellectual Disability or who

had a child involved with the Walk Peer Programme to please come to the meeting. The aim of the meeting is to form a committee of parents to fight the closure. This programme was only costing a quarter of what it costs to put these young Adults into other alternative structures like the National Learning Network or Rehab”, he added.

According to Peter young adults with an intellectual disability are discriminated against in further education and training. He uses the CAO system as an example pointing out that there is no equivalent system for people with an intellectual disability.

“They cannot avail of training in Trades & Professions like school leavers of similar age.

These routes are closed off to them. It is after time that these young adults had the same supports to enable them to live lives with dignity, meaning and purpose. We need your help in highlighting how this group is looked upon and discriminated against, in our society, in our education system, and in the work place”,

pleaded Peter.

Geraldine McCabe echoed Peter’s sentiments saying the programme had worked wonders for her 18-year-old daughter Shannon’s self esteem.

“Shannon really thrived thanks to the Walk Peer programme. She got a work placement out of it and she absolutely loved having a job and coming home in the evening and telling me all about her day and what she got up to.

“Her confidence and self esteem shot up and the loss of this programme is a huge loss for Shannon and many young adults like her.

“The Government are doing this to save money but you really can’t put a cost on how beneficial this has been for Shannon and many others around the Louth area. We have a meeting on Thursday night in Ardee and we’re determined to fight this closure and get the programme up and running again”, promised Geraldine.

The meeing will take place in Muldoons, Ardee, on Thursday August 20 at 8pm.

Concerns over development plan

Green Party councillor Mark Dearey has expressed grave reservations with regards to proposals made in the Louth County Development Plan especially with regards to rural settlement and has urged people to read it and object if they feel the need to do so before this evening’s (Wednesday) 5pm deadline.

In particular Cllr Dearey is worried that proposed settlement rules for rural Louth will result in dreadful plan-

ning decisions which will adversely affect the countryside.

“I would urge people to read the development plan and especially the rural settlement strategy. I have voted against these proposed plans at a number of council meetings. I accept many of the plans outlined in the draft but I am wholeheartedly against the Rural Settlement Plan.

“There are a number of issues such as reducing the distance between rural settlements to 150 metres from the current distance of 400 metres.

I believe the proposed plans will also lead to more ribbon developments in the countryside which is defined as four or more houses in a continuous row along a public road or private lane.

The public have an opportunity to voice any concerns they may have about these proposals and I’d urge them to make their way to the town hall or county hall before Wednesday’s 5pm deadline. These proposals will radically effect rural settlement issues in Co. Louth”, urged Mark

Tidy Towns launch Exam joy on the double new Heritage Poster

Following the huge success of the ‘Dundalk Style’ architecture poster which was released last year Dundalk Tidy Town’s have released two follow up posters which are sure to be just as popular with everybody connected to the town.

Cathaoirleach of the Dundalk Municipal District Cllr Maria Doyle was on hand to officially launch the two heritage posters, one of which celebrates Dundalk’s Victorian buildings and a second which chronicles the history of the GNR in the town.

Speaking at the launch Cllr Doyle spoke of the strong links between the GNR and Tidy Towns and congratulated Willie Duffy and all involved in producing the posters.

“I’d like to congratulate Willie and everybody else who was involved in putting together these two fantastic posters and I am sure they will

prove to be just as successful as the fantastic Dundalk Architecture poster which received so much praise when it was released. The links between the Tidy Towns and the Great Northern Railway are strong and this poster which is being unveiled today is full of beautiful photographs depicting this town’s wonderful railway heritage”, stated Cllr Doyle.

As well as trying to keep Dundalk tidy Willie Duffy noted that the Tidy Towns committee are also a vehicle for tourism in the area as he spoke about the success

of the Dundalk Architectural Style posters which went on sale last year.

“We printed 500, and sold them all. People really seemed to take to them and they sent copies to people with Dundalk links all over the world. Another 500 were printed, and most of those were sold so that shows just how popular these posters were. We now have two new posters which we hope will prove just as popular.

“One which depicts Dundalk’s railway heritage and when the town was headquarters of the Great Northern Railway

(GNR) and another entitled ‘Dundalk’s Victorian craftsmen at work’, which features footscrapers, door-knockers from that era and some of the finest examples of Victorian buildings from that era”, explained Willie.

“I see the Dundalk Tidy Towns as a small cog in a big wheel which helps to make Dundalk attractive as a tourist destination. We get tremendous support from the tourist office and Louth County Council and especially Benedicta McArdle and her outdoor team which helps keep the town looking well.

“I’d like to thank everybody who helped put these posters together as well as Martin McElligot who made a wonderful video showcasing the town during the Giro D’Italia last year”, he added.

The posters available to buy at the tourist office in Dundalk from tomorrow and cost €8.

There was double celebrations in the Mullen household in Glenwood on Wednesday morning as both Michael and Joseph excelled in their Leaving Cert with both students opening their results to find they got 6 A’s.

17 year old Michael got 615 points while 19 year old Joseph got 595 with both of the De La Salle students getting more than enough for their chosen courses in third level.

Despite being older Joseph sat his Leaving Cert with Michael as he took part in Transition year last year. Both of the De La Salle students are now preparing for life in UCD with Michael about to embark on a computer science course while Joseph will study to become an actuary.

According to Michael there was a bit of friendly rivalry between the two brothers but in the main we helped each other out and thankfully we both got what we wanted. Joseph would be very strong with Maths and he helped me out on a few things throughout the year. I’d be pretty good at physics and maybe an odd time would give Joseph a hand if he needed it”, explained Michael.

“I opened up the envelope at the school and although I thought I’d done pretty well I was shocked and delighted to see I got 585 points.

“I have enough to get my first choice of History and French in Maynooth so I’ll be busy over the next few weeks getting ready for my new life down there”, stated Nicole.

Grammar school student Grace Harris was out celebrating on Wednesday evening as

she celebrated her 565 points with friends.

“I’m very happy with how the exams went and I’m looking forward to starting college but for this evening I’m just thinking about celebrating my results”, laughed Grace.

St Vincent’s students Katie Vernon and Aoife McMenamin were amongst the highest achievers in the country with Katie getting a perfect 625 points while Aoife got a very impressive 615 points.

Dundalk students happy with Leaving results School principals around Dundalk have reported a general mood of relief and happiness as students collected last week’s Leaving Cert results.

According to St Vincent’s principal Deirdre Matthews most of her sixth year Leaving Cert girls were thrilled with their results with two managing to get the maximum 625 points.

“We had 141 students sitting the Leaving Cert this year and as always the vast majority of them did well and got the results their hard work and effort deserved. We had one girl getting the maximum 625 points and over half got over 400 points which is brilliant.

“Practically every girl got the most out of themselves and the next step is looking over the CAO offers to see what is next for them. I’d like to congratulate all the wonderful students and staff who worked so hard throughout the year to help get these results”, noted Ms Matthews.

Con McGinley principal in St Mary’s college was also pleased for his students who generally seemed happy picking up their results.

“We had quite a small number of 86 students sitting the Leaving Cert this year and all in all they generally seemed

pleased. There was a bit of nostalgia around the school on Wednesday morning given that this was the last year where results were given out in the old school. Next year we will be in our new building which marks an exciting new phase for the school”, explained Mr McGinley.

Meanwhile in Colaiste Ris principal Padraig Hamill wished his Leaving Cert students well and spoke of the excitement and relief of students picking up their results.

“There was a generally positive mood and as usual great excitement around the school as students got their results.

You see even the toughest lads get nervous when opening their envelopes and it’s lovely to see the happiness in the majority of students who have got everything they can out of themselves. The vast majority of students still pick up the results in the school and I think there was only three this year who checked them online”, noted Mr Hamill.

There were similar scenes of jubilation at the De La Salle with principal Patricia O’Leary noting that most were happy with their results.

“We had 150 students sitting the exam this year and thankfully most were happy with how they got

on. We had a significant number of students getting over 500 points and we had one that got the maximum number of points. Despite the general downturn in maths we seemed to buck that trend as the maths results were very good this year”, noted Ms O’Leary.

Headmaster Cyril Drury in Dundalk Grammar School praised his 80 students who sat their exam noting that they were all in pretty good form after receiving their results with nobody failing higher maths. About 40% of Grammar students opted for the higher paper which is well above the national average of 27%.

“It’s obviously a stressful time for all involved but thankfully most seemed happy with what they got and now they will look for the CAO offers and take the next step in their education journey”, explained Headmaster Drury.

O Fiaich College seen 75 students sit their Leaving Cert and in keeping with the general theme around Dundalk the vast majority were delighted with their results.

“The sun shone down on the students last Wednesday morning both literally and metaphorically. Almost everybody seemed to have got what they wanted and the con-

sensus was very positive.

I would encourage students to consider PLCs which are a brilliant stepping stone to our local institute of technology and indeed colleges all around the country”, advised principal Padraig McGovern.

Finally in the Bush Post Primary principal Kevin Joyce expressed his delight at the high standards achieved by his students.

“This year 94 students received their Leaving Certificate and Leaving Certificate Applied results. Overall the school was delighted with the grades achieved by this group of students across a wide range of subjects.

As results were received and analysed earlier today, there were scenes of excitement as students prepared to move on to the worlds of higher education and employment. The Class of 2015 achieved a very high standard and 96% of results across all subjects were awarded at grade D to A1”, stated Mr Joyce.

There was also plenty of joy amongst Dun Lughaidh students as the vast majority of the 95 students who sat their Leaving Cert were happy with their results.

Bellurgan host Peninsula Cup Bellurgan United will be hosting its annual schoolboys soccer tournament, The Peninsula Cup, this weekend in Flynn Park Bellurgan.

Helpline volunteers needed for RCNE Rape Crisis North East (RCNE) is offering people the opportunity to attend a Helpline Training Programme which will commence on Thursday November 5 and finish on Friday December 11. The Helpline Training is funded by the Manuela Riedo Foundation. The training is free and in return, we will ask you to commit

to four hours of your time per week to provide telephone counselling support to survivors of rape and sexual violence.

It will take palce at Rape Crisis North East, 59A Anne Street, Dundalk and involve 12 day workshops over six weeks (Thursdays and Fridays).

Prison was unpleasant experience

A man who admitted breaking the conditions of his bail conditions appealed for another chance after finding his time in custody to be an unpleasant experience.

Paul McGauley of 64 Claddagh Park who is facing theft and burglary charges admitted that on two separate occasions he didn’t abide by his curfew.

He also accepted Garda evidence at Dundalk District Court that on five occasions he was not at his home during curfew hours when Gardai called.

Solicitor, Niall Lavery, stated that his 18-year-old client, who had no previous convictions, had never been in custody before and as a result he found the previous three days to be an unpleasant experience.

He asked for another chance and undertook to make it clear to his client that if given bail, he would be the subject of rigorous checks.

In agreeing to grant bail, Judge William Hamill stated that if there was any breach, the defendant would end up in custody as he adjourned the case for one week.

“Wild Love” visits Dundalk “Wild Love”, a Washington DC band with strong local connections are currently visiting Dundalk and are using the town as their Irish base for their nationwide tour.

This is their first overseas tour and reports indicate they are generating good publicity with their music.

Fronted by lead singer and guitarist Brandon McGee (a 19 year Dundalk youth now living in Washington since 2013) the band played to full houses in Newry, Belfast and Drogheda over the past week and their mixture of pop and rock went down well with patrons fortunate enough to see them live. The band are performing at the famed Rose of Tralee

Festival, a show in Dublin and will have the distinction of opening the show for the famed “Deer Hoof” band from San Franscisco who are currently touring Ireland, with concerts in Belfast & Cork this week.

Wild Love play all their own music and have released 2 x EPs . Their first was released in April 2014 aptly name Wild Love and their second in October 2014 called Flow.

On their Irish tour the well known and talented Drummer from Dundalk Andy Cronin made up the quartet as their regular US drummer Zach Benson was unable to travel to Ireland with the band.

They recently completed an East Coast tour of the

USA thus enhancing their reputation as a lively up and coming group with an interesting fresh approach and distinctive style to their music which continually attracts the fans.

Commenting on their Irish trip Brandon pointed out that both the USA band members were completely taken aback by the wonderful welcome they received from the general public .

The reaction of audiences at their recent gigs was unbelievable and they would have no hesitation in recommending Ireland as a fantastic place for a visit or a holiday . Brandon himself was delighted to visit his family and friends in the Dundalk area.

Exciting finish to cycling league The penultimate round of the Bike Station Cycling League was contested over 35km with the riders going out to Ardee across the link road and back into Dundalk, through Castlebellingham for a finish at the Fane Bridge.

In the sprint for the podium Gavin McDermott took the win with, Paul Howard in second and David Finnegan third. Gary Gorman led home their other four groups which had all come together on the links road across from Ardee.

With both Alan Bingham and Benny Smyth failing to score points the leader board has changed yet again ahead of the final round, which will be held Thursday August 27. Only three points separate the first three, with Alan Malone (90points), leading Alan

Bingham (88 points) and Benny Smyth (87 points) in thirrd. Even fourth place Connor McKeown could mathematically share the league win with Alan Malones. Linda Stokes has a firm lead in the ladies competition and cannot be caught by her nearest rival Rosemary Gibson.

The Bike Station League takes a break this Thursday night as Jenkinstown Hill is once again the venue for the Leinster Hill Climb Championships.

Defending champion James Davenport of DID Electrical will again be favourite, however there is a number of other strong contenders.

Fundraiser Race Night In Aid Of “The Birches” The Birches Alzheimer Day Centre is calling on people in the area to support one of their main fundraisers of the year.

Following the success of the inaugural event last year, a second Fundraising Race Night will be held at Dundalk Golf Club on Friday August 21.

A series of funding cuts put the

service at risk and as a result the centre needs €90,000 to be able to continue providing this vital service and is hoping that local people will respond with their usual generosity.

The annual Fundraising Race Night offers the chance to help out a worthy cause and have a bit of fun.

Hosted by Image IT Group, over 100 local companies came on board last

year to raise over €18,000 and 160 people attended the race night.

According to Peter Durnin, Managing Director, Image IT Group over 100 tickets have already been sold and we expect to sell 250 tickets.

“This is a great facility to have in our town that helps families who are dealing with Alzheimers. This Charity Race event gives local businesses the

opportunity to sponsor a race, jockey, or to make a donation”, said Peter. “One hundred percent of all money raised goes directly to the Birches and all sponsors will be acknowledged in the race programme and on digital screens

throughout the Golf Club”, he explained. The Durnin family with their usual enthusiasm are aiming to beat last year’s total of €18,200. If you are a business and are in a position to support The Birches at this event with a sponsorship please

Dundalk cricketers ease past Longford Wedding Showroom

On Saturday, Dundalk 1st XI made the trip to Longford CC and on a very challenging pitch, Dundalk bowled Longford out for just 124 before a classy display of big-hitting gave them an eight wicket victory.

Longford were in trouble from the start, with a communication mix up in the second over enough for Michael Mullen to run out Bala Iqbal. Steve McGrath continued the destruction of the top-order, taking three cheap wickets.

Also on Saturday, Dundalk will host their annual Youths’ Cricket day, starting at 1pm at the club’s pitch in Dromiskin. The day will consist of two Twenty20 games as well as the presentation of awards. Food and drink will be available all day and everyone is invited to attend.
