The British are coming! Sound the drums and muster the militias! Prepare yourself for the British invasion and enjoy free admission and special public programs commemorating the Bicentennial of the War of 1812. Often remembered as America’s “Second War for Independence”, The War of 1812 plays a significant role in the founding of our nation, and in the creation of the modern Republic. Dumbarton House, alongside many other organizations, is proud to celebrate the bicentennial of the end of the war with a fun-filled weekend! Join us, here at Dumbarton House, or visit one of several other museums for an exciting day in honor of the bicentennial of the end of the War of 1812. The events at Dumbarton House cater to all ages and include, walking tours of Georgetown, and a children’s tea and talk with American Girl Doll author, Valerie Tripp on Sunday, July 27th at 1pm. For further information please visit, www.dumbartonhouse.org/events and www.dcwarof1812.org Several of our partner organizations will also be hosting events this weekend including; DC: Historical Congressional Cemetery: Free War of 1812 tours on Saturday every hour between 11 am and 3 pm. National Museum of American History: On Friday, beginning at 9:30am, join in folding a full-size 30 x 42-foot replica of the Star-Spangled Banner in Flag Hall. Octagon Museum: Special Open House Hours from noon-4 on Saturday and Sunday. White House Historical Association: Guided tours of Decatur House from 10am-3pm on Sunday. Maryland: Darnall’s Chance House Museum: Free admission on Sunday includes free tours of the house and the “John Hodges and War of 1812″ exhibit. Maryland Milestones/ATHA: “Bursting in Air” Art Event on Saturday the 26th. Riversdale House Museum: Riversdale will be open for FREE guided tours and special family activities on Saturday and Sunday, July 26 and 27. Virginia: Carlyle House Historic Park: Free admission on Saturday the 26th. Gadsby’s Tavern Museum: Free admission Saturday from 10-5. On Sunday, families will be inspired as Junior Docents grades 4-7 give tours of the Museum from 1–4 p.m. Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum: Free admission Saturday from 10-5.
