Dolley Days Paper Dolls In the early 1800s, clothing looked very different than it does today.Women and girls were only allowed to wear dresses, never pants. These dresses were in a neoclassical style, mimicking what people thought was worn in ancient, or classical, Greece and Rome.
These dolls are based on Dolley Madison. Dolley was the First Lady while her husband, James Madison, was the president. Dolley was known for throwing fantastic parties! Party guests could also always find Dolley by looking for a feather in the crowd- Dolley was a short woman and wore a turban on her head with a feather in it (see an example at the bottom of this page). This was partly for fashion but it also made her easy to find!
Cut out the paper dolls on this page for fun! You can decorate their faces or draw heads on them.
