From our Head of College Dear Parents and Guardians, I had the great pleasure of witnessing a troupe of Senior School students performing Metamorphosis yesterday.

This was a powerful experience on so many levels – the first Senior School production I have witnessed since joining this College almost two years ago. Congratulations to the cast: Kris, Ella, Michael, Eleanor, Ryan, Christina, Lynn and Olivia, and to the students and staff working behind the scenes to make it all flow smoothly and look so impressive. Special thanks to Jean Jang and Matthew Readman for providing our students with this extraordinary opportunity.

The Friends of Dulwich (FoD) are holding their used uniform drive and used uniform sale next week. This is a great opportunity for you to unburden yourself of any uniform items your children might have outgrown, pick up some new items at a great price, and help the College to achieve our sustainability goals by reducing waste and avoiding unnecessary consumption. Our Dulwich Talk next Wednesday at 8.30am will feature guest speaker Bernie Cho, a music and entertainment industry leader who will talk all about how the Korean Wave has come to be so successful, as well as share insights for the next generation of aspiring professionals. For the first time, we will be providing simultaneous Korean interpretation. If you would like to attend, please RSVP by clicking this link.

The government is reducing the number of Rapid Antigen Test kits distributed to students to one kit per student per week. As such, we are requiring all students and staff to take a RAT once a week every Sunday evening until further notice. RAT positive students and staff should not come to school on Monday and notify the nurse immediately at nurse@dulwich-seoul.kr. RAT kits for students will be distributed as they have been through their classes.

You may have seen announcements in the media around significant reductions in Covid-19 restrictions coming into effect on Monday. We have received an update from the authorities this afternoon and you will be receiving further information next week in relation to any changes coming into effect within the College.

Whole School Parent Portal Changeover Advisory We are notifying you of a planned change to our Parent Portal. This is an advisory only and no action is required at this time.

The College currently uses an encrypted, cloud-based, secure software package called EduLink to manage the data we hold for each pupil. The Parent Portal, also on EduLink, is a website that parents can use to access information about their child, including their timetable, attendance record, rewards and conducts record, school reports and lists of teachers (including contact details).

During the week commencing Monday 18 April, we will be switching over both our data management system and Parent Portal to a new software package called iSams.

The switch is meant to facilitate data management and make it easier for parents to navigate through the portal to access information regarding their child’s education.

When the changeover happens, you will receive an email with detailed instructions on how to activate your new iSams Parent Portal.

Meet the newest member of our Board of Trustees I would like to officially welcome Mr Lionel Orens, a parent from our community, to the Dulwich College Seoul Board of Trustees. We are grateful to him for accepting this important role and I have no doubt the College will greatly benefit from his valuable contributions.

I’m honored by the opportunity to join the Board of Trustees and contribute to the success of the school. I came to Seoul with my family in July 2020, when I was appointed as the Invest and Trade Commissioner for the region of Flanders at the Embassy of Belgium. My youngest son is in Year 11 at Dulwich college Seoul, while my eldest son is studying at Leiden University in the Netherlands. Prior to moving to Korea I was a corporate banker and my family and I have lived in London, Shanghai, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. I’m also an active member of the Belgian business community in Korea and try to support the BKBF (our Belgian business club) as much as I can.

We are pleased to invite you to our next Dulwich Talk entitled 'The Hip Hype Reality of the Korean Wave', at 8.30am on Wednesday 20 April. Our guest speaker is Bernie Cho, a leading entertainment and media executive and President of DFSB Kollective, a Seoul-based artist and label services agency.

To make this talk more accessible to everyone in our community, simultaneous Korean interpretation will be provided. Through the lens of his nearly 25-career as an early champion and global ambassador of the K-Pop music industry, Mr Cho will speak about working with iconic and indie Korean music artists as well as share insights about the challenges and opportunities for the next generation of aspiring creative arts professionals.

Senior students If Senior School students have any changes to their travel arrangements they must let the Bus Reception desk know. They must go to their bus as quickly as possible as other children are waiting. If they are not there by 3.40pm, the bus will leave without them.

Term 3 - ECA Bus ECA buses (4:30pm) will run from April 18 to June 10.

If your child has an ECA (3.30pm - 4.30pm), they will automatically be switched to the 4.30pm bus.

For late activities including ECAs and Sports Squads that finish at or after 5pm, students will be removed from bus lists automatically and must be picked up.

Thank you to our Reps who were able to join our monthly meeting. Below is a summary of the meeting points.

Year 2 - 4 Hikes this week: We had lots of parents helping on the hikes this week all of which were through the blossom-filled woods around Seoul. The students loved the space, blossom, physical challenge and chance to walk with new/unfamiliar people.

Year 2’s challenges were a scavenger hunt for materials to make a picture and to conduct a ‘listening walk’.

Year 3’s challenge was to find signs of spring as we walked (we had last completed this hike in the autumn and know what fall changes there were).

Year 4’s challenge was to complete a natural weaving art activity.

Year 5 and Year 6’s hikes were postponed but are now back on the calendar so details are coming soon.

Metamorphosis: Senior School Production It’s so important for Primary-aged children to see quality stage productions and this week Year 4 to Year 6 were in for a treat with a very powerful play performed by our Senior students. It was a mature play but one which our older Juniors were mesmerised by - powerful performances, strong staging and great lighting and costumes were a winning combination! Our students were articulate about the play’s complex messages and commentary plus its staging. A super experience for all!

Gentle Reminder: Uniform From August 2022 We are making some changes to uniform requirements for DUCKS and Juniors children which will begin in August. Please see the letter shared today from me for full details. In summary: All Juniors’ boys will wear a red tie (red for Juniors and striped ties for Seniors from August 2022).

DUCKS girls will transition to wearing shorts/trousers and the blue shirt, starting in August 2022. All DUCKS will wear that uniform from August 2023, when the dresses and pinafores will be discontinued.

Footwear: DUCKS will wear black sneakers with velcro fastenings from August 2022, and Juniors may wear either black sneakers or the current black shoes from August 2022. The footwear worn must be completely black with no details or decorations in other colours (including visible soles, stripes, coloured laces, sparkles etc).

Assembly this week Monday’s assembly: I led this assembly and we gave the students an overview of the tweaks made to the uniform for August 2022.

Friday’s assembly was led by Mr Harvey and he focused on good playground behaviour with the children.

Summer Uniform Transition Week Students will transition to wearing their summer uniform during the week of 25 April. Please refer to the Parent Handbook for full details of the required summer uniform.

Upcoming Primary Parent Workshops Term 3 Primary Parent Workshops will be held on Campus (2nd floor of the Primary Inquiry Hub) from 2pm - 3pm.

The B1 coffee shop will be open for parents from 1.40pm.

Stars of the Week (DUCKS to Year 4) and Learning Warriors (Year 5 / Year 6) Each week, our staff spot a child in each class who has been doing especially well with the IB Learner Profile dispositions and that child becomes SoW or the LW for the class. Year 2 Hike

This week, the children were introduced to a new unit of inquiry, 'How are living things connected'. The DUCKS 2 spring hike was a perfect way to set the scene and introduce the topic. In preparation for some activities to be completed during the DUCKS 2 Spring Hike, we shared the stories, 'Listening Walk' by Paul Showers and 'One Small Place Within a Tree' by Barbara Brenner and Tom Leonard. On the hike, the children were tasked to collect interesting natural objects to create a piece of nature art in class. We also took time to find a place to pause and listen. Then the children wrote down the things that could be heard and described the sounds that they made.

Back at school, we used the ideas to collate into a class poem. A sample of the children’s thoughts: Wind blowing softly through the trees.

Year 3 Hike

What a fantastic spring hike Year 3 had on Tuesday! The weather was absolutely perfect, sunny and warm with a slight breeze. The children were excited to notice the differences in the flora and fauna since the autumn hike they went on way back in October. Many discussions were had about the blossom, the buds and just the difference in colours and we had further discussion in school about seasons and how and why we see changes.

Conversations also took place about how the walk seemed easier now that they had grown a little bit. Some groups helped to collect twigs which will be used later in the term for some science and engineering building challenges.

Year 4 Hike

Year 4 really enjoyed their spring hike. Alongside the hike, they also completed a natural weaving art activity.

They collected sticks to make a frame and nature they found on the ground to weave. Using yarn, they constructed their frames and wove in their finds to create some spectacular natural art.

Senior School

Senior School Production: Metamorphosis Over two years since our last Senior School Production, so I was excited to see students back on the stage on Thursday. ‘Metamorphosis’ is the story of an ordinary man who wakes up one morning to find he has been transformed into a giant insect and how his family cope with the change. It explores themes of fear, discrimination, disability, greed and power. The on-stage performances were spectacular, and the fusion of dance and drama were evident, with the performance brought to life with some very imaginative choreography. The

crew behind the scenes enhanced the performance with spectacular lighting and sound effects. It was an absolute joy to be back in the Auditorium, watching our students perform. Congratulations to all staff and students involved!

Earth Day, Friday 22 April In Senior School, we are making plans to celebrate Earth Day next Friday. The day will be a non-uniform day for Senior School. Students are invited to wear green for a donation to the World Wide Fund for Nature. Green has been chosen as the colour associated with the environment. It’s also fitting as the event is being organised by Shackleton house, who are represented by the colour green.

Claire J “Top of the World” in IGCSE Mathematics.

I am exceptionally pleased to announce a phenomenal achievement by Claire J (Year 11). Despite sitting her Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics examination a year early in June 2021, Claire has managed to achieve the incredible accolade of the “Outstanding Cambridge Learner Award - Top of the World”. This means that Claire gained the highest possible standard mark in the world (200/200) for her Mathematics IGCSE, a feat I have never before seen in my 10 years of teaching. As Head of Department, and also as Claire’s teacher, I would like to commend her for her relentless hard work and dedication to her studies; an achievement such as this has been years in the making, and she thoroughly deserves this commendation. I cannot wait to see what more she has in store for us over the next few years!

From the Award Winner

“I’ve always been interested in maths. One of my earliest memories related to maths was the FOBISIA Maths Competition in Primary School. I was selected to participate but declined because I lacked confidence in my skills. Ms Cindy encouraged me to join more competitions. She helped me to understand that it’s okay if I don’t win.

In Senior School, classes are smaller, so teachers can give us individual attention and we have more time to focus on problem solving. The IGCSE curriculum allows us to pick subjects based on our interests, which helps with motivation. I have been studying a wide range of subjects, including the arts - painting and modern dance.

I like maths because it applies to a lot of different real-world things. I like the challenge, and the feeling of getting the answer right. It takes grit, determination, and time, but solving maths problems brings a real emotional high.

I don’t have a favourite subject. I’d like to focus on being a well-rounded student. I’m not going to study maths in college. I want to study literature and social science. I would like to find ways of applying maths in these fields, like research statistics. My brother received an early admission to Columbia University, so I would like to attend college in the US too.

I would like to thank my teachers for all their hard work in helping me to achieve this result.”

Claire J

From Ms Cindy Neo I taught Claire maths in Primary School. From very early on, Claire already had the IB traits embedded, and her quiet, logical and flexible mind transcended her young age. Due to these qualities, she was chosen for our first ever team for the FOBISIA ONLINE Maths Competition in 2016. Claire and her team worked through breaks and after school, and she was often the voice of reason when disputes arose. Their efforts paid off, and Dulwich College Seoul were crowned as champions for the competition.

Claire initially had reservations about competing in the competition, but she worked hard on improving her Maths in her own time. This showed an amazing level of determination and perseverance. Kudos to Claire!

Genius Hour

At the start of the school year, Year 7 to Year 11 were given the choice of 20 different topics to learn about during certain form times across Terms 1 and 2 for ‘Genius Hour’. These included ‘Archaeology’, ‘Russian for Beginners’, ‘Astronomy’, Codebreaking’, and many more. This culminated in the Genius Hour Showcase on the final day of Term 2. The pupils all did a wonderful job of showing their teachers and each other their projects and what they had learned, and working in groups of mixed year groups. I am greatly looking forward to seeing what weird and wonderful topics are on offer next year, and a huge thanks to all of the teachers involved for passing on their personal passions and expertise outside of the curriculum.'

Friends of Dulwich Used Uniform Donation Drive and Used Uniform Sale

Summer uniform transition week is just around the corner!

From Monday 18 April to Wednesday 20 April, the Friends of Dulwich (FoD) will begin collecting donated uniforms from the Dulwich community ahead of the Used Uniform Sale which will take place on Thursday 21 April and Friday 22 April.

Proceeds from the sale will be used for the benefit of the Dulwich community and other charitable causes.

Large bins for donations will be positioned outside the College Main Entrance for parents and in the Lost and Found area for children arriving at school by bus. Please donate any clean, gently used uniform items which you no longer need.

If you would like to purchase used uniform items, please click on this link to reserve a 15-minute slot. We ask that you reserve a slot as soon as possible as there will be no walk-ins.

Meet the members of FoD

My name is Stefanie and I am the mum of Stella (Year 5) and Lola (Year 1). We are originally from Germany and we moved to Seoul in July 2020- right in the middle of the pandemic. For my kids it was the first time at an English-speaking school. That’s why it was a very tough start for us at Dulwich with the new language, the online learning and not knowing anyone.

I have heard so many nice stories about Dulwich how it was before the pandemic and that’s what we want to experience as well. That’s one of the reasons why I joined FoD. I want to help at events, meet and support new families in settling in to Dulwich and helping the school to get back to normal.
