Ojibwe Winter Camp: Painting Snow Snakes

Gooniikaa-Ginebig Ataadiiwin, or Snow Snake Game, is a traditional Ojibwe winter sport involving the sliding of a carved, painted wooden ‘snake’ down an icy snow trail to see whose snake goes the furthest. Guest instructor, Joseph ‘Minwaanimad’ Gokee will provide carved snakes to customize with paint in preparation for the Ojibwe Winter Camp at Bagley Nature Area in February. All materials are provided. No registration is required but space is limited to the first 20 participants on a first-come, first-served basis. Geared to kids and their families. Meet in the Main Library Gold Room.

Bring a craft project to work on while we enjoy Michel Gondry’s 2008 buddy comedy, Be Kind Rewind. About the film: When the VHS tapes get wiped at a movie store, owner Mos Def must find a solution. Enter Jack Black with his (questionably legal) brilliant ideas to keep things afloat. Be Kind Rewind is rated PG-13 and runs 1h 42m. No registration needed. For adults.

In Duluth, we must embrace the cold or succumb to winter madness. Hailey Eidenschink-Ziebol, historian at St Louis County Depot and host of PBS’s Minnesota Historia, will present on Duluth’s tobogganing craze in the late 1800s. No registration. Tues. January 20 2:00-3:00 pm Green

Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Club • Adults

Discuss compelling stories within the Sci-Fi & Fantasy genre at this monthly book club. New members are always welcome. January’s book is The Left Hand of Darkness, a groundbreaking work by Ursula K. Le Guin, in which a lone human emissary to the world of Winter—whose inhabitants are mostly genderless— must bridge a gulf between views and bring Winter into an intergalactic civilization. No registration needed.

Family Storytime & Play • Birth-PreK + Caregivers

Drop in and begin the week with stories, rhymes, songs, and movement. Then, learn through explorative play that builds early STEAM skills, creativity, and curiosity. On break 1/5 and 1/19.

STEM for Kids is a hands-on series focused on learning through discovery and play. For January, we will explore the world of owls by dissecting owl pellets.
