Get ready for the Duluth-Superior Pride Festival 2023 at the Main Library! This is an open craft session with supplies to make earrings, bracelets, and even tutus; while supplies last. This event is for all ages and is self-directed. Parents and caregivers should plan to assist children who are crafting. Thurs. August 31 1:00-5:00 pm Green Room

Kaleidoscope on the Library Plaza

Join us on the library plaza for Kaleidoscope’s 44th season! These programs are held rain or shine. Children under 8 should be accompanied by an adult. You are welcome to bring blankets to sit on but please leave pets and chairs at home. ASL interpretetation will be provided for afternoon performances.

LEGACY Event: Chione Woodwind Quintet

Join us for Story Time with Chione, featuring a brand new musical story based on Twin Cities author Ka Vang’s Shoua and the Northern Lights Dragon

Hear this story set to beautiful and evocative music composed by fellow Minnesotan Jocelyn Hagen! The program is 45 minutes and is for all ages. This program, sponsored by Arrowhead Library System, was funded in part or in whole with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund (ACFH).

CLIMB Theatre Presents “The Ant & The Grasshopper”

In this continuation of Aesop’s Fable, The Ant and the Grasshopper, two friends compete together to find their voices, however hard-working Ant and playful Grasshopper are having trouble finding their harmony. The program is 35 minutes long and is geared towards kids up to 10 years old and their families. This program, sponsored by Arrowhead Library System, was funded in part or in whole with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund (ACFH).

Library Stuffed Animal Adoption Day

The library has been the home for a large collection of stuffed animals for a long time. Now, they need a new home and new people to take care of them. So, we’re asking YOU to adopt one of our stuffies and bring them home to take care of. Kids are welcome to come to the Gold Room at the library to find the perfect stuffed animal to bring home and call their own. Each animal or character is one of a kind. Creatures available for adoption range in size from small to very large so be prepared to help your child make the right decision for your family and home. Stuffed animals available while they last. One adoption per child.

Readers of all ages, it’s time to gear up for summer reading! Stop by any of the three branches to pick up your time tracker and learn how to join Beanstack to track your reading time. Reading can look a lot of different ways—whether you’re reading aloud, being read to, listening to an audiobook, or reading on a device, it all counts towards your minutes. Log those minutes and complete challenges to be eligible for some great prizes! Participants under the age of 18 who log 20 hours of reading get to choose a free book from the book cart. This year’s Summer Reading Program is Find Your Voice. Be on the lookout for themed activities throughout the summer!

Every Monday, starting June 26, we’ll have a new maker program to keep you inspired and having fun throughout the summer. These projects will often get pretty messy, so wear clothes you don’t mind getting paint and other materials on. This program will be from 2:00-4:00 pm, in the Green Room or on the Library Plaza, if weather permits! Interactive Refugee Exhibit • Tweens, Teens, & Adults

Refugee for 50 Minutes Exhibit: From Afghanistan to Germany will be hosted by UW-Superior’s Dr. Khalil Dokhanchi. Step into the shoes of a refugee and learn about the experiences of people who leave their countries of origin. This program is appropiate for tweens to adults. Breanne Marie broke onto the Minnesota music scene as a solo performer with an acoustic guitar and repertoire of country covers and originals. The Front Porch Sinners were formed and joined musical forces with Breanne Marie. The group plays “Great Lakes Country” which is an alt-country sound using classic country instruments and lyrics that speak to the hard times and natural beauty of Rust Belt communities like Duluth.

SUMMER READING PROGRAM • All Ages

Readers of all ages, it’s time to gear up for summer reading! Stop by any of the three branches to pick up your time tracker and learn how to join Beanstack to track your reading time. Reading can look a lot of different ways—whether you’re reading aloud, being read to, listening to an audiobook, or reading on a device, it all counts towards your minutes. Log those minutes and complete challenges to be eligible for some great prizes! Participants under the age of 18 who log 20 hours of reading get to choose a free book from the book cart. This year’s Summer Reading Program is Find Your Voice. Be on the lookout for themed activities throughout the summer!

Stuffy Sleepover!

Special Stuffy Storytime and Sleepover Drop-off

Your stuffed animal will have a rockin’ time making new friends, playing games, reading stories, and causing a little mischief around the West Duluth Library.

You can drop your stuffy off anytime after 10:45 am on Wednesday, June 7th. Stuffies will be ready for pick up anytime Thursday, June 8th (10am-8pm), or Friday, June 9th (10am-5pm).

A sleepover memory book will be created and be available for pick up the following week. Please register in advance! It’s recommended NOT to bring your favorite, can’t-go-a-nightwithout-them stuffy!

Shiitake Mushrooms Workshop

We are excited to welcome back Shawn Bernhardt, local educator and mushroom grower, for a presentation on growing this delicious fungus at home. This informational and hands-on workshop will demonstrate how to start a shiitake mushroom log, including the supplies needed, growing conditions, and harvesting skills.
